With the California High Speed Rail completed by 2020, Merced-Atwater will have great opportunities for its future developments
Looking at the existing infrastructure, Merced-Atwater is at the juncture of freeways and railroads. The city developed because of the rail road and infrastructure remains an important part of the city.
There are currently four major players in Merced-Atwater: Merced County, City of Merced, City of Atwater, and UC Merced.
What would happen if these authorities collaborated on how they can grow together?

There are more than 100,000 students within 1 hour driving distance from Merced-Atwater, which is beneficial for the growth and development of the city, especially with the new University of California in Merced.
Students in the region will become aware of the growth and the projected success of UCM. Merced-Atwater can become a hub that is constantly on the students’ radar by hosting events that may be of interest to this demographic.

There is an opportunity for cultural development in Merced-Atwater
When compared to traveling on the future high speed rail, traveling between San Francisco and Los Angeles by airplane will take longer and potentially be more expensive. It is likely that the new way of traveling between these two cities will be the high speed rail.
If people will be using the high speed, why not give them a reason to stop in Merced-Atwater?
SAN FRANCISCOThere are more than 90 cul-ture venues and institutions in the Bay Area, most of which are around 45 minutes away from Downtown San Francisco. It takes 50 minutes on public transportation from Down-town San Francisco to the UC Berkeley Art Museum. It will take 75 minutes on the high speed rail from Down-town San Francisco to Mer-ced-Atwater.
LOS ANGELES There are more than 100 culture venues and institu-tions in Greater Los Angeles, most of which are more than 1 hour away from Downtown Los Angeles. It takes 1 hour and 50 min-utes on public transporta-tion from Downtown LA to the Getty Center or the Getty Villa. In contrast, it will take 1 hour and 40 minutes on the high speed rail from Downtown Los Angeles to Merced-At-water.
MERCED-ATWATERWith the high speed rail, Merced-Atwater becomes closer to the two major cities in California. For example, it will be easier and faster for a person to go to Merced-Atwater, than to get from Orange County to the Getty Center.
What if the cities were connected with a new type of public infrastructure?
What if UC Merced expands into downtown Merced and is linked directly to the High Speed Station?

If UC Merced expands into downtown Merced and links to the high speed sta-tion, it becomes a network with other institutions in California.
Other major cities which will help its growth and diversify the environment around it.
By having UCM linked to the high speed station, UCM will have the opportuni-ties to host cultural or art events that can attract visits from both Northern and Southern California.
City of Merced and UC Merced are growing and expanding at a rapid pace, and the City of Atwater is relatively stable.
One observation is that the residents of Atwater often visit Merced, but rarely do Merced residents visit Atwater.
Introducing a new type of public infra-structure can promote interest in not just one direction (Atwater to Merced), but an exchange. This can challenge the boundaries between the cities and the county and increase interest in explor-ing different parts of the cities.
