  • Model Year 1985

Tempmatic climate control, model 201, model year 1985

    Differences from model year 1984:

    1. Air conditioning compressor,model 201.024

Model 201.024 now has the swash platecompressor (Nippondenso) used on model 201.122.Due to the installation of the single belt drive onengine 102, the same compressor cut-out (as onengine 601) is used to prevent belt damage in casethe compressor jams.

Fig. 208 Location of temperature switchllOC(23)

    Fig. 207 Air conditioning compressor (143),model 201.024

    2. Air conditioning compressor cut-out

A similar control unit as used on model 201.024 isinstalled in model 201.122. Both control units aredesigned for a delayed compressor cut-in. Thecompressor is activated 10 seconds after anengine speed of 600 rpm is reached. This improvesengine speed stabilization after start-up.

To prevent the 102 engine from overheating, thecontrol unit has an additional integrated cut-outcircuit. At a coolant temperature of 1 lo%, thiscircuit is grounded through temperature switch(23) and the compressor stops working. At approx.103C, the temperature switch opens and thecompressor comes on again.

    3. Temperature switch for engine fan clutch(lOOC) and auxiliary fan (11OOC)

This temperature switch (16) has three connectionsand two switch functions. One switches the fanclutch on at lOOC, the other switches the auxiliaryfan on at 110 C.

On model 201.024, the engine fan clutch controland the relay for the auxiliary fan are now switchedthrough the positive side of the electrical circuit(see wiring diagrams).

The previous temperature switch for the auxiliaryfan in 201 models was therefore eliminated.

    Important:

Air conditioning compressor switching waschanged from the positive to the negative sidethe electrical circuit.

This means that with the ignition and tempmatclimate control switched on, the low pressureswitch and the control unit are connected toground (M 10).

Activation of electromagnetic clutchfor engine fan

At a refrigerant pressure of 20 bar the pressure switch(S 32) activates the low speed of the auxiliary fan andthe electromagnetic clutch for engine fan via doublecontact relay (K 8).

Formerly only the auxiliary fan was activated by therefrigerant high pressure switch (S 32).

    Model 201 .126

Layout and function are similar to A/C compressorprotective cutout of model 201.122 model year 1985.

The switch (S 32) activates only the aux. fan low (en-gine has visco-fan).

    A/C compressor overheating cut-out,models 201.0241.126

To prevent overheating of the engine, a cutout hasbeen integrated in control unit (N6). At approx. 115C(engine 602), 110C (engine 102) coolant tempera-ture the temperature switch (S 25/5 or S 25/3) willswitch to ground so that the A/C compressor isswitched off via the control unit. The temperatureswitch opens at approx. 108C (engine 602), 103C(engine 102) and the A/C compressor switches onagain via control unit (N6).

    Tempmatic climate control, model 201

Modifications as compared to Model Year 1986:

Fresh/recirculated air switch and tempmatic push-button control unit

The fresh/recirculated air switch has been integratedinto the tempmatic pushbutton control unit, in placeof the previous EC pushbutton. In addition, theoperation of the A/C mode pushbuttons, as well asthe symbol for the center button, have been modified(Fig. 83/l). Both A/C mode pushbuttons can beswitched on and off individually. If one pushbutton isdepressed, it will automatically cancel the other. Withboth A/C mode pushbuttons switched off, the climatecontrol operates as before in the economy (EC) set-ting (no A/C).

    Fig. 83/l

    Function of recirculated air mode

The function of the recirculated air mode is identicalto model 124, however, when depressing the recircu-lated air switch, the outside temperature must exceed15 C for the system to remain in the recirculated airmode for 30 minutes (in model 124, exceeding 7 C).

    Function of dehumidifying mode

Pushing this button switches the compressor on tooperate until the evaporator reaches i-5 OC. The inte-rior temperature sensor has no influence.

    Pushbutton control unit

    Short-circuit proof design.

Override function during failure of a temperaturesensor or the feedback potentiometer.

Malfunction indication using light emitting diode(LED) blink code.

    Short-circuit proof design

The circuit board in the tempmatic pushbutton con-trol unit is protected against shorts from any of its ex-ternally connected circuits. The respective outputsignal, i.e. blower and A/C compressor, is switchedoff, and the blend air flap remains in its present posi-tion. The respective output signals are switched onagain after the short-circuit has been eliminated.

Due to this modification, the two ampere fuse in thetempmatic pushbutton control unit is no longer re-quired.

Override function during failure of a termperaturesensor or feedback potentiometer

Then tempmatic pushbutton control unit switches toan override function if one of the following compo-nents fails:

    In-car temperature sensor

    Outside temperature sensor

    Evaporator temperature sensor

    Coolant temperature gauge sensor

    Feedback potentiometer

In this case, the blend air flap remains in its presentposition. The heater valve remains open or opens. The blower continues to blow at the previously setspeed, and the legroom flaps open. All other func-tions are non-operational.

Malfunction indication using light emitting diode(LED) blink code

A defective temperature sensor or feedback potentio-meter is detected by the tempmatic pushbutton con-trol unit. The malfunction indication is conveyed in theform of voltage impulses (battery voltage) at terminal9 of the right connector on the tempmatic pushbuttoncontrol unit. These impulses can be read throughthe use of a LED (not a light bulb). The malfunctioningcomponent or respective wiring can be pinpointedaccording to the number of voltage impulses indicat-ed by the blinking LED. The LED will blink once foreach impulse. The voltage impulses have a frequencyof l/2 Hz. (two seconds).

The malfunction indication repeats until the defect isno longer detected. There is a pause of four secondsbetween each sequence of impulses, at which pointthe opening and closing of the relay in the blowerswitch is audible (clicking noise), momentarilyswitching the blower off. This provides an additionalmethod for diagnosing the defective component bylistening to the relay and timing the impulse se-quences.

The test procedure for diagnosis using the LED blinkcode is on page 246.

    Auxiliary fan

    Models 107, 124, 126, 201

    2-Function refrigerant pressure switch

These models are equipped with dual electric auxili-ary fans. They are switched on simultaneously in thefirst speed at a refrigerant pressure of 20 bar and inthe second speed at an engine temperature of 105 C.At maximum speed, both auxiliary fans draw approx.26 Amps at 13 Volts battery voltage.

The auxiliary fans are attached to the condenser andcan only be removed after first removing the frontcenter reinforcement (arrow).

To prevent damage to the A/C compressor, a 2-func-tion refrigerant pressure switch (S 31 /l) is installed inthe receiver/dryer replacing the previous switch.

Function 1 (low pressure) activates if the refri-gerant level is too low or with no refrigerant insystem.

Cut-out pressure is approx. 2.0 bar.Cut-in pressure is approx. 2.6 bar.

Function 2 (high pressure) activates if the expan-sion valve becomes clogged or if the auxiliary fanfails to operate.

Cut-out pressure is approx. 30.0 bar.Cut-in pressure is approx. 22.0 bar.

Testing the temperature sensorsand the feedback potentiometer

Complaints resulting from a defective temperaturesensor or feedback potentiometer causing the blowerto switch off momentarily or the blower relay to makea clicking noise, can be more easily diagnosed usinga light emitting diode (LED) blink code.

Further test procedures are performed as before.
