October 2017
fall festival funWhat a beautiful day we had for our Fall Festival! The residents, staff and families enjoyed playing games, listening to music, visiting and filling up on pretzels, hot dogs and funnel cakes.
News from Sue Our last Party in the Park, downtown Oelwein, was held on Thursday, September 21. The residents enjoyed the music, food and social time with the community this summer. We had butterfly tagging in the park with butterflies sitting on the residents’ noses. The Fall Festival was a great success as we had a beautiful day of fun! We started fall leaf rides to see the leaves as some are changing fast. We are off to Pinters Pumpkin Patch in Decorah this month. We will enjoy seeing some farm animals, browse the pumpkin patch for that perfect pumpkin, check out the autumn leaves as they change color. The fourth grade readers have started their visits with the residents. They enjoy listening to their stories. We will be Trick or Treating with our Mercy family and are in need of individually packaged candy for the residents to give out to the children. The residents enjoy seeing the little ones’ costumes. If you would like to donate some prepackaged candy please bring it to the office of Sue and Janet. Join your loved one for the event from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
~ Sue Schneider, Activity Director
Care Gram Annette TurnerThe residents nominated Annette Turner, RN for this month’s Care Gram. Annette is a jack-of-all trades, good at what she does and has a wild sense of humor. The residents state, “We enjoy visiting with Annette!” Thank you Annette, for all that you do for us!
~ The Residents Council
October 31 - Trick or Treating Trick or Treating will take place fro 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Mercy Living Plus on Tuesday, October 31. The residents will sit outside their room door and you are welcome to join them as they hand out candy to the children from our Mercy Family. If you are able to assist, please contact Sue or Janet at 283-6087. The residents always enjoy the company and the help. We need donations of packaged candy with no nuts for the residents to give to the children.
Happy HalloweenThe black cats are restless, as they eye the full moon,The Halloween witches slide by on their brooms.Their black skirts are flowing, they pass in the night,Casting a shadow of terror, to each goblin’s delight. The goblins are dancing and swaying in the breeze,To the music that’s playing by the crisp fallen leaves. The silhouette of corn stalks stand stately and tall,There’s a nip in the air, the season is fall. The work of an artist, each feature in place,The face can be smiling, carefree or sad,One slip of the knife can make it look mad.A candle inside is lit for the glow, Then sat in the window, so the face will show. There’s a feeling of weirdness, the scene becomes tense,As the black cats are stalking on a high wooden fence. The nights so confusing, there are spooks everywhere,What what you are doing, all mortals beware! The witches have landed, they are steeping a brew,For the bash of he season, with a midnight curfew. The black cats and witches, the goblins and ghosts,The moment of magic, that last minute toast. This gala affair, how they carry on,But right after midnight, each will be gone. Not a trace, not a sign, not one will be seen, until their return on next Halloween.
~ Velda Haldeman
