The Rain Dancers Kristie Walker

Festival goers donned full body wetsuits and ponchos to defy the much needed (but why that weekend) rain during The Fourth Golden Plains Music Festival held at the Meredith Supernatural Amphitheatre over the long weekend of March 6 – 8. Despite the weather the festival ran smoothly. Responses to our online survey continually applaud the smooth operation of the festival considering the weather and local hospitality including the Community Tucker Tent (without a doubt the driest fanciest ‘tent’ on-site).

We continue to receive feedback from bands that the organisation and atmosphere of both Golden Plains and Meredith Music Festival are regarded among the best in the world. International acts are blown away by the beauty of the region and after the fourth Golden Plains Music Festival there is a little more water around to make things greener. We look forward to hearing how the community benefits from the 2010 fundraising efforts that will continue at the 20th Anniversary of Meredith Music Festival in December this year. Thanks again to the Golden Plains Shire Community for your help hosting another successful festival.

And a Successful Nick

The “Rod Armstrong Trophy” for Junior Cricketer of the Year was established to recognise the junior player who displayed a commitment to the overall function of the club. The inaugural trophy was awarded at the Club’s end-of-season event last month to Nick Swain. Along with a strong performance with both the bat and the ball, Nick constantly asked for advice on how to improve his cricket and didn't hesitate to help the club when needed at higher levels, often playing B” grade in his first year at a senior level. Meredith C.W.A We had a lovely St Patricks day sing along with some old, some forgotten songs with the Keyboard played by Dawn Macdonald. It was lovely to see some of the Senior Cits at the sing along. The dressed potato was won by Sue Woerner and best bloom Betty Hayes.

March has been a very busy month for us working on the Christmas in July Fashion parade, table decorations and favours. Also an early start on our Show window. This is coming along nicely.

Our April craft will be making beaded Angels and scrapbooking. We would love to see some new faces at our meetings it is a lovely group and you can always be guaranteed a laugh and something nice to eat.

An entry in the potato competition

A Great Shave at Lethbridge Vicki Killury

The Worlds Greatest Shave night held at the Lethbridge Hall on 12th of March was a great success. We had 9 guys shave their hair and heaps of kids have their hair coloured.

Everyone enjoyed a sausage and the kids loved the jumping castle. We raised just over $2000. We also had some great prizes donated for the raffle from Lethbridge wines, Sarah Winstanley day spa, Bari's pizza and Lethbridge Hair Shack and more.

Thanks to all these people and to everyone who helped on the night and raised money.

Centre Opening and BBQ Joan Brick

The Meredith Community Centre, Inc. celebrated its new name with a community BBQ and Open Night on Friday, February 26th. Staff, Committee of Management members and those from the community enjoyed an evening getting treated to a delicious BBQ with the “Two Ronnies” on hand to do the cooking.

There were a number of displays and demonstrations provided by those who have previously participated in classes at the Centre which included spinning, patchwork, card making, candles, felting, folk art, painting and computers.

Contact the Centre on 52861348 for further information regarding classes and activities on offer.

Landcare June Cameron

The Landcare Meeting was held on the 2nd March. There is little to report, but the most disappointing item to report is that the Landcare bore on Mt. Mercer Rd has finally been decommissioned. It has been a great boon to members during these last very dry years, but as there has been no water for the last year , and it is unlikely to be replenished in the near future, the considerable cost to the group in having the power connected can no longer be justified.

Thanks to the Maud Landcare Group for organizing the rabbit poisoning campaign.

There is much talk at present about the lack of Government support for Landcare, and the winding back of weed eradication programmes. However there is still much that can be done and our group has equipment that may be hired to assist, and advice.

The next meeting of the Bamganie Meredith Landcare Group will be held on Tuesday July 6th at the Meredith Community Centre. New members are always welcome.

On the 17th of March two footy players came to Meredith Primary School. Their names were Tom Hawkins and Nathan Djerrkura from the Geelong Cat’s Football Club.

We did some stretches on the bottom oval we then played a footy game, and after that we played poison ball. After poison ball we asked some questions like “who is the toughest player on your team” and “What is your most memorable moment in footy”. We also got some autographs. (FOOTNOTE: The players’ visit was part of the “AFL in Schools” Program. They also visited Anakie and Lethbridge Primary Schools on the same day.)

Above: Tom Flood is closely tagged by GFC player Tom Hawkins. Below: Grades 2 to 5 at the Football Clinic.

A Whole New Ball Game! Marg Cooper

The members of the Meredith Golf Club had begun to worry about some old pine trees near the clubhouse and carpark that were leaning precariously and shedding branches.

Inquiries were made into cutting these trees down but the expense was fearful. Then the Golf Club had the opportunity to sell the timber from most of the pine trees on the Golf Course to fill a Chinese order.

The Club accepted the offer at this time while the trees have still got some commercial value.

The logs are being trucked to Melbourne and loaded into containers to be shipped to China.

Work was undertaken over a month and the last tree to be felled was a huge gnarled pine tree at the 10th tee. Most of the trees were felled and cleaned by an enormous machine but larger trees had to be felled by chainsaws operated by very experienced men.

The removal of the old trees will allow the young native trees that have been planted over the last 25 years to flourish and make room for more plantings of natives.

It is a good program for the Golf Club and the members look forward to a fresh, new aspect to their course: a “whole new ball game!” Proceeds from the sale of the timber will be used for more improvements to the Golf Course.

Peter Andrews in Meredith Jo Klein

Natural Sequence Farming founder, Peter Andrews, will be conducting a full day on-farm workshop in Meredith on Tuesday May 11th, 2010. Many of you will recognise Peter from ABC’s “Australian Story” where he was the subject of the most popular episode ever and the only ever two part series of the program.

Peter will provide an overview of his theories on how Australia’s landscape can be brought back from the brink of total degradation. He will challenge your beliefs on the treatment of weeds and your understanding of Australia’s water (hydrology) system. His insight and ability to read the landscape will leave you in no doubt that farming practices can, and must, become more sustainable. This will be followed by an extensive walk and talk session on a local farm. There will be farmers using NSF theories in practice available on the day for general discussions. Coming to Australia. Louise Corral

I arrived in Australia in 1962 as a 14 year old, with my parents and younger sister in 1962.

We flew form Barajas Madrid Airport on a Quanta's jet aeroplane. It was a new, scary experience as I had never been on an aeroplane before. Our plane took three days to arrive in Australia, stopping a few times to refuel.

When we arrived in Darwin, our first stop in Australia, it was hot and sticky but wonderful to at last have arrived at our destination.

From there we flew to Sydney. All the migrants were taken to a hostel for a few weeks.

There was not much work around at the time but finally my father was offered work at the steelworks in Wollongong about an hour from Sydney. Dad was happy for us all to move there.

A man at the hostel told Dad that he wouldn’t work at the steelworks as he’d heard that two or three people got killed there everyday. Dad didn’t take any notice. Hhe bought a Volkswagen with all his savings and we set off.

We went to live in another hostel called “Fairymeadows” that wasn’t far from Dad’s work. We stayed there for awhile until we found accommodation in a bungalow. Mum and Dad thought it was good to move as the food at the hostel was so different to our food and we didn’t like it, except bacon and eggs on Sundays.

After that we shifted a few times but it never felt like a real home.

I found school hard, especially English Grammar. I could not speak a word of English when we arrived but being only fourteen and with a love of reading and writing my English gradually improved.

I also learnt Italian at the same time and it was easier than learning English, because of its Latin roots.

One day a friend, who had been a neighbour from our street in Madrid came to visit us from Geelong . He told us that in Geelong, Commission houses were available to low income workers so we moved. We lived in a bungalow ifor a few months until we shifted into our own house - Alleluia, Alleluia!

It was only a two bedroom house but it was like Buckingham Palace to us. I started work in a clothes factory when I was fifteen.

Mum and Dad were disappointed that I did not finish school but it was easier to work than study. Perhaps if I had to do it again I would choose to study.

But I am very happy with the life. I am living at Meredith and I am now studying in my spare time.

Louise below, and above with Mum and her sister.

Vic Talent Funding for Meredith Craig Trickett

The Meredith township has received a small grant of $400 for youth talent (sport). NOW Lara Glass

Lara Glass is a company that works with and provides glass, leadlight, entrances and doors. We have been operating for 25 years and first started advertising in the Meredith Newsletter in 2000.

Since our early days the team at Lara Glass has expanded our range of products from leadlight to include handcrafted entrance ways and doors that comprise of stained glass, architectural safety glass and feature windows. We have been wholesale for many years, yet today we offer these to the public.

We also provide a glazing service for the local community which includes domestic and commercial work eg: homes, stores, workshops, sheds, farm machinery and insurance work is always welcome.

We also teach leadlight and glass slumping classes for the hobbyist to come and have a lot of fun with glass and make their own projects for their homes. Eg: gifts, Christmas, mothers day, fathers day or birthdays.

We find today that one of our greatest asset is our GLASS GALLERY. This showroom gives the public an opportunity to see our home crafted products for themselves and allows them to purchase unique custom made products at wholesale prices.

We believe that the old skills in handcrafting glass and timber to traditional standards are far more appealing than today's modern options. Not only have we been able to keep them alive by working with old traditions, but also retained our history and heritage values in today’s society.

THEN

Our Local TV Stars

Some of you might have been recently caught by surprise when watching TV to see our local couple Murph and Jenny Emond on the telly. Murph and Jenny volunteered to share their story with the nation to promote the National Relay Service TTY telephone. Murph has a hearing impairment and the TV ad explains how the TTY telephone helps him to communicate and make his own phone calls. I must say that it is usually parent’s being proud of their kids achievements but in this case the Emond kids are extremely proud of Murph and Jenny’s national notoriety.

Local identity (and soon-to-be national celebrity) “Murph” Emond.

An Easter Wedding Popular local teacher James Colbert will marry Beth Graham on Easter Sunday. Known for his easy going nature, he even agreed to being photographed with some doubtful wedding attire at a pre-wedding celebration held with school staff. And students got in on the act too when they had their own end-of-term “muck-up” day - on Mr Colbert’s car!

James and Beth plan to honeymoon in the USA over the Xmas break.

Summer Recalled Jim Elvey

We didn't run our usual seasonal rain chart last month, so here’s a quick update. Summer recorded 139mm, only a smidge below the 142mm long term average. The summer-long green grass was even better testimony to a good season. And as our front page story indicates, Autumn is off to a good start.

Police Paddocks Strategy Under Review A plan for the development and management of the Police Paddocks on the south-east edge of Meredith township will be under review at a meeting to be held at 6.00pm on Thursday 15th April at the Meredith Community Centre. All interested parties are invited to attend. If you have an interest in this project, please either attend the meeting or call Ballarat Environment Network Executive Officer Hedley Thomson on 5331 7831

Some Bunny to Love

'Dad, why did they build the Great Wall of China?'

'That was during the time of Emperor Nasi Goreng, and uh, it was to keep the rabbits out. There were too many rabbits in China.'

I'm not a big fan of Telstra, but they did get that ad right. If Australia ever built a Great Wall, I know we'd all wish the rabbits (and foxes) safely on the other side of it. Except, of course, at Easter time.

Rabbits are damaging to crops and compete with native wildlife, and since their unfortunate introduction and population explosion, Australians have shot, trapped and poisoned rabbits in an effort to control and eventually eradicate them. Cooking them up, sending ferrets and dogs after them (our cat's been known to bring a few home, though how she manages it is a mystery) and releasing diseases are all used to try and reduce the population, but as Easter gets closer, things change. The more progressive among us might turn to the shy little bilby, but most of us will call a truce with bunnies - the chocolate kind, that is.

I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with the Easter Bunny. I adore chocolate and love the pretty foil chocolate eggs and rabbits come wrapped in, so I still get a little over

Mollie’sCOLUMN

-excited waking up on Easter Sunday, hoping the big Bunny has hopped his way through Meredith and left lots of chocolate goodness behind. But put a chocolate rabbit in my hand, and it looks a bit like I have a deep personal grudge against all things Easter, or a passionate hatred of poor little herbivores. I'll have it cracked open, foil torn off and be gobbling down the pieces quicker than a rabbit can race across a road.

And they have to be quick; if we swerved for every rabbit on the road, we'd be zigzagging in to the gravel all the way to Ballarat. It might sound barbaric, but no Flood child gets squeamish at the unpleasant, unavoidable thud under the tyres when rabbit after rabbit streaks across the road. Somehow we've separated the domesticated bundles of fluff we foolishly bring home every few years, who always seem to meet untimely ends after they've chewed everything they can get their sharp little teeth on, from the wild ones doing much the same thing. It's a tough place for a rabbit out here, pet or wild, but the dangers they face are nothing compared to what the chocolate ones are up against at our house on Easter Sunday.

Really, I'm just grateful we have an Easter Bunny bringing our chocolate and not a member of some other troublesome introduced species. I don't think all the chocolate in the world could reconcile Dad to what a giant Easter Fox and his pals could do to the strawberries.

“This Book Will Save Your Life” by A.M. Homes

This book is set in Los Angeles and the author utilises the natural landscape and the underlying structural problems in a city while also illustrating the personalities, myths and absolute weirdness of the city.

Richard Novak lives a controlled life, almost in isolation: his nutritionist cooks perfectly proportioned low carb/fat meals, his housekeeper maintains his pristine house, his fitness trainer sees to his well maintained physique and he adds to his wealth by trading shares on the internet until he suffers a mystery pain that interrupts his routine.

He feels something and for the first time he is afraid to be alone, so he seeks company.

The book proceeds to describe the lost man’s reconnection with the world!

The new world he finds contains a quirky cast of characters, totally unbelievable and absurd happenings and Richard becomes an incidental Good Samaritan.

He struggles to reconnect with his son, his family and his ex-wife and enjoys real food and plenty of donuts.

It is a “whimsical” book! The author is worried that everyone in America pretends to be blind and they practice not seeing.

They are afraid to become involved but at the same time are afraid to be alone. Maybe the book will save our lives!

The book for the next discussion is “A Change in the Lighting” by Amy Witting.

“KILLED BY A BUTCHER'S KNIFE.” Mr. H. O'Brien went over from Meredith to Steiglitz on Wednesday afternoon to hold a magisterial enquiry into the death of Sidney Smith, aged 25, who was in the employ of Councillor T. Scott, president of the Meredith Shire Council.

The deceased borrowed a butcher's knife to open some bran bags in a shed on the run, and when returning home he got off his horse to open a gate, and in doing so inflicted a wound in his thigh 3 in. long by 2 in. deep, cutting an artery. When he was discovered on Monday night by Mr. Scott, life was nearly extinct, owing to loss of blood. A verdict, of accidental death was recorded.

Smith was a sailor, whose parents are well-to-do in London. He absconded from a sailing ship six weeks ago, and was engaged by Mr. Scott, early in February. From The Adelaide Advertiser Saturday 7 March 1903

Bamganie Air Show Marg Cooper

Two helicopters, 2 small planes and a DC-10 performed aerial acrobatics on Wednesday, March 3 over the Leigh River near Gundy’s Crossing. The massive, converted DC-10 350 seat passenger plane was on trial for her fire fighting ability, in Victoria from the US.

On Wednesday the plane dropped retardant in Enfield State Forest in the morning and in the afternoon tested the performance of fire retardant, “Phoscheck” on open grassland on the Stephens property just south of the Leigh River at Bamganie.

The DC-10 flew from Avalon and delivered two runs of bright red retardant, about ½ kilometre apart, almost in a north/south direction. Flying at approximately 500 kph at a very low height, it delivered 25,000 litres of retardant in each run in about 5 seconds.

Fires were then lit along the east edge of the retardant and burnt to and over the retardant on the west, to test the effectiveness of the retardant to stop a fire.

Many brigades from Shelford, Mt Mercer, Rokewood etc attended the fires on the ground and CFA and DSE personnel attended to observe the results.

It takes approximately 15 minutes at Avalon to refill the DC-10 with fuel and water, fire retardant or foam.

The DC-10 can carry up to 27.2 tonnes of fuel in its wings and can fly to anywhere in Victoria in under an hour. It a crew of three.

The drop is made at the push of a single red button after information is entered into a computer.

A Meredith WW1 Soldier: Frederick Thomas Worland: KIA Marg Cooper

Tom Worland was born 1890 at Inverleigh to Fred and Blanche Worland (Elliott).

A very tall, dark handsome man, he worked as a quarryman and farm worker and, in 1913, married Annie Diana Louisa Noske. They had three children - Frederick Augustus b. 1913 Ellen Marie b. 1914 and Dagmar Blanche b. 1916 - and lived at 43 Staughton Street, Meredith.

Tom enlisted on 15/7/1915, was a Private in the Army, 5th Battalion (Infantry) and he died on 25/7/1916 at Pozieres, France.

His wife Dida was not told immediately of his death as she was giving birth to daughter Dagmar.

A witness to the death of Tom Worland, S.A. Lees tells “This man was in the bombing Coy. of the 5th Battn. He was killed on July 26th 1916 at Pozieres, during an advance made that day. He was in a communication trench between the 1st and 2nd lines of trenches when he was hit by a bomb and so seriously injured that he died soon after. I saw him lying dead in the communication trench, but do not know where he was buried. Ground was held. He was over 6 feet well built, medium complexion, about 27 years. He was married. Came over from Victoria in Troopship “Ceramic” with 12th Rfts of 5th Battn.”

Frederick Thomas Worland is honoured on the Bamganie State School Honour Board, at Villers-Bretonneux Memorial France and at panel 45 in the Commemorative Area at the Australian War Memorial.

An Anzac Day Service will be held on Sunday 25th April commencing with a Service at 10.00am. See page 3 for details.

Team Signs Up for WWI Marg Cooper

Angus Smith tells that the Lethbridge Football Team won the Premiership in 1938. All the football team went together to the Drill Hall in Geelong to sign up for World War I. Four men were rejected including Angus, who was sent home to help his uncle grow vegetables for the Army.

He tried to enlist three weeks later but was sent home again.

All of the men came back except Martin Burrows who was a pilot and was shot down over the English Channel. After the war the team got together again with the same coach and won the next premiership for their team mate, Martin.

Angus tells that he won seven premierships playing for Lethbridge but the 1938 team was the best he ever played in.

(Martin Burrows was engaged to Mary Brady of Meredith. Mary never married.)

We sat on the back veranda for the Air Show. On the first run the DC-10 flew just west of our house and on the second run it flew just east of our house at what seemed about 200 feet above the ground.

Lots of exciting changes Since our last newsletter you may have noticed there have been a few changes happening within the Pharmacy with one substantial change still due to occur this month. We thought we would update you on these changes below:

Staff changes

Last month saw Helen Quagliaro transfer from our Pharmacy to Damian’s other Chemmart Pharmacy at Geelong West to take up the position of Retail Manager. The opportunity and decision for Helen to take up this new role occurred within days so didn’t leave Helen, and the Pharmacy, any time to let customers know of this change. We would like to wish Helen the best of luck in her exciting and challenging new role.

To replace Helen at the Pharmacy, we have employed Julia Worrall full-time. Julia has previously worked at Grogan’s HealthWise Pharmacy and brings with her that knowledge along with a bright and outgoing personality. Julia will be working Monday to Friday in the Pharmacy so we hope everyone makes her welcome when you are in the Pharmacy next.

We have also employed a new person to work Saturday mornings in the Pharmacy. Alicia Willder has been working with us for a few weeks now and has previously worked at Bell Post Hill Pharmacy and Fowlers East Geelong Pharmacy and thus brings with her a lot of Pharmacy experience. Again we welcome Alicia and hope everyone does the same when you are in on a Saturday morning.

New look Pharmacy

Later this month will see both service counters undergo a facelift with brand new counters from Chemmart being installed. Plus we will be introducing some new Chemmart shelving behind our main service counter where we will be moving our Cough & Cold Relief, Pain Relief and Children’s Health sections to. Keep an eye out for this exciting new look within our Pharmacy.

New Giftware

We now have a lot of brand new gift ware in our Pharmacy with many new products not seen before. We have all of our new Salt & Pepper products available, with some still to come. Plus we also have a lot of gifts from the Sydney Gift Fair continuing to arrive on a weekly basis. One of the exciting new ranges we are starting to stock is Baccarat. Over the coming months will be some fantastic specials from Baccarat!
