ACADEMIC YEAR
2019/20
Dear Parents and Carers,
We have had very positive first fortnight since the Christmas Holidays. New topics are underway and we have even had an alien landing in Year 1! As you know, on Monday we will be having an Australia day and raising money to support the WWF in their efforts to help the Australian wildlife and communities overcome the destruction that has been caused by the bush fires.
Climate Change is happening and we each have a responsibility to do our best to protect our precious planet. The children will be considering actions we can take on this day and throughout the school year. As part of Australia Day we are having a visitor from to the organiser of Odcombe Village Pop Up Eco Market. She will be talking to the children about the work they have done, to inspire the children to see what changes we can make.
The Garden Bird Watch is a National Event starting from the 25th – 27th January if you would like to take part with your children you can find all the information on www.rspb.org.uk. It is a fun activity where the children can record the birds they are seeing and then the figures are compared nationally. It is so important to support the children learn about their local environment and the different types of animals that live along-side us. We will be joining the Schools Bird Watch too and if you are able to donate any bird seed, peanuts or suet to the school, we would be very grateful.

Redstreak Class
Redstreak class's lesson was disrupted last week when they heard an almighty crashing sound! On further investigation it seemed that the sound had come from the field and so they all rushed out to find out what had happened. They found what appeared to be space junk on the field and concluded that it must have been an alien crash-landing, but there was no alien in sight! They have since put up posters asking for further information on the alien's whereabouts. If you happen to see an alien in Merriott please contact the school office immediately!
The Racket Pack Smash Badminton Festival
On Friday 17th January, Merriott and Haselbury took part in the
Racket Pack Smash Badminton Festival, 6 pupils from year 3
and 4 from each school went to Yeovil College to practice
badminton skills and to gain more knowledge in the sport.
They completed 10 different activities, using the skills they
already have and improving them even more.
All of the pupils said that they enjoyed the activities and would
do them again! The day included throwing, balancing, hitting
and moving either with a shuttlecock or a fluffy ball.

Kitchen Garden After School Club
A small group from the Kitchen Garden Club recently created a wood pile of the rotting wood in the corner of the field some of the wood has fungi growing on it These logs and fungi provide the ideal habitat for the Crampball Fungus Weevil, a Nationally scarce species found in the school grounds. Hopefully more weevils will be seen this year especially if the log heap remains undisturbed!
