Update: Refugee sponsorship Local Rotarians and others who have joined them in efforts to sponsor a refugee family report that they have now been matched with a family, through the Family Links Initiative. The Merritt group will be sponsoring a couple with two young children, a one year old and baby who is a few months old. They are currently residing in a refugee camp in Jordan, but have close relatives in West Kelowna. The family is currently working on their application to Citizenship & Immigration Canada, and realistically the earliest they would arrive is January 2017, although it is more likely to be April or May or later. The Merritt sponsoring group is also working on their side of application. They will be continuing with fundraising projects in the early fall, and intend to hold another information night, when they will show films about refugees in Syria. In the meantime if people wish to donate their bottle returns to raise funds to support the family, they can do so by mentioning Rotary at the recycling depot. They are also looking for dona- tions of furniture. FMI or to help out, please contact Jacqueline (250)936-8585. Tsilhqot’in War Chief, Chief Ahan On July 18, 1865, Chief Ahan was the last of six war Chiefs hanged during the Chilcotin War of 1864-65. On October 23, 2014, in the BC Legislature Premier Christy Clark fully exonerated the six war Chiefs of any wrongdoing and rec- ognized the Chiefs as war heroes, pro- tecting their lands and their people. The Tsilhqot’in National Government (TNG) remains concerned over the de- velopment of the New Westminster Sec- ondary School, a site known to have remains of Tsilhqot’in War Chief, Chief Ahan. Monday, 151 years after the wrongful trial and hanging of Chief Ahan, a Tsilhqot’in spiritual ceremony was held at the New Westminster School to memorialize his life and legacy as well as protect his burial site. New Westminster Secondary School was built on the burial grounds of many First Nations, along with others. School District No. 40 now has plans to build a new school and convert the current New Westminster School grounds to a memorial site. Through this process, the TNG is requesting archaeo- logical and historical records be consulted, along with engaging fully with the Nation. Mars On the way to spend the weekend with us, our grandchildren noticed a bright star in the sky. Our daughter, Nancy, told them that it was Mars, which was at its closest and brightest in many thousands of years. She went on to provide a simplified explanation of the solar system suitable for her young listeners in the back seat. Nancy ended her explanation with, "We live on a planet called Earth." After a long pause, my four-year-old grandson asked, "What planet does Grandpa live on?" Waiting For Years We had built our dream house some years ago, and furnished it with quality pieces as we could afford them. Now the delivery truck carrying the last purchase, a new bedroom suite, was pulling into the driveway. "Finally!" I exclaimed, flinging open the front door as the driver walked up to the house. "I've been waiting twelve years for this!" "Don't blame me, lady," he said. "I just got the order this morning." "This is not a partisan debate; it is a human one.
