Second Call for Meskwaki Language Warriors The Meskwaki Language Department is currently in a project planning phase for the creation of a language teacher training pro-gram. We are working on building partnerships with outside institutions to establish a teacher training program to provide prospec-tive Meskwaki language teachers with essential language teaching skills and hands-on learning experiences. With this new pro-gram, we will be able to fill a gap in school and community language programs by providing much needed training for Meskwaki language teachers to strengthen community language use.

In the 2014 Tribal Audit Survey, 211 tribal members responded to the following question: “I can speak Mes-kwaki and would be willing to help others learn the language by: receiving training to become a language teacher within the community (77 people or 36% of respondents); or receiving training to become a lan-guage teacher within the school (52 people or 25% of respondents).” According to the survey results, the interest for a teacher training program is present in our community. So the first step in planning is to pin-point the language warriors. We’re asking you to come forward to help shape this project!

Language warriors are second language learners, semi-speakers, and fluent speakers with a high level of self-motivation and long-term commitment to learning, teaching, and sharing their knowledge with learners. Community members who have a desire to (1) “learn the language” as well as to (2) “learn how to teach the language” are encour-aged to respond to this announcement! This project will require a 3-year commitment, beginning in 2016, for training. Overall, train-ees will (1) take language courses; (2) satisfy a subsequent teacher certification program; and (3) complete supervised teaching opportunities in a variety of community settings before assuming a leadership role.

In the coming years, trained Meskwaki Language Teachers are urgently needed! In the next few months, we will be establishing a directory of community members wishing to become our next generation of Meskwaki Language Teachers. Contact us today to be added to the directory and to be a collaborator in this exciting community initiative! For more information, call 484-3185 or stop in at the Museum and ask for Medenea (Wayne) or Nananikaiga (Amanda).

November is Diabetes Awareness Month For this month, instead of listing a lot of data as we have all seen before on the large numbers and figures for the prevalence of diabetes not only here on the Settlement but in all of Indian Country. I want to say what I believe. Diabetes is always on the rise, meaning if we do not change the way we eat and change our physical activity habits, diabetes will continue to rise and claim many lives through other complications which can develop through this disease.

I have worked for the diabetes program for over ten years. Through my work and observations, there is hope this can change. I’ve witnessed changes.

Through the Diabetes Prevention Program (2005-2010) we had success in educating at least 50 people. The DPP participants were taught the basics in planning meals and being active. I would like to challenge those past DPP participants to take a few minutes each day to recall what they learned and teach their children and others in their household. I know there are a few who are practicing what they learned and are maintaining their goal weights today.

The summer of 2014, the Tribal Sovereignty Program contributed five free shares to families who had a person with diabetes. Four out of the five recipi-ents lowered their A1C (which is an average of their blood glucose levels for three months) from June to September! What a success! It is possible to do that again next summer. I assisted in that program and learned how to cook with vegetables and shared what I learned with anyone who would listen, and my family.

The annual school health screening is an important service provided by the health clinic and diabetes program. See the chart on health screenings for the years 2012, 2013, and 2014. Parents and guardians, please pay attention to the results when they are returned to you. If you have any questions, call the clinic and ask a provider or nurse.

Quarterly Diabetes Support Group Meeting is a another important service for all community m members. We share very good information on v various topics of diabetes as presented by l local providers and guests. Lite refresh-ments are served. This is for all and not just persons with diabetes.

We partner with tribal departments for events, like the annual health fair which in-vites local, state, and other health and well-ness providers to set up a booth and share their information for all community members, school students and others.

These are all a part of the Meskwaki Diabetes Program funded by the SDPI Community Di-rected Grant and has been a part of the Sac & Fox T Tribal Programs since 1998. We hope to keep m moving ahead to stop this disease and become healthier

Linda Winter Chaser, Diabetes Coordinator

School Screening is an annual activity for the Meskwaki Health Clinic to provide signif-icant measures of five factors. Because Native American’s are more likely to be diagnosed with Diabetes Mellitus, we have tracked the identified factors over a period of 3 years.

We believe the results are important to re-port back to the community.

School Screening will take place this year in November. Each year at least 75% of all the Native American students enrolled in the Settlement School and South Tama County Schools have been screened.

The Meskwaki Child Care Pump-kin Patch was held on Saturday, October 10, 2015 at Meskwaki Family Services. Overall we had an excellent turn-out for this being our first time trying an event like this. We had 197 people attend and it was a beautiful day to just hang out and be outside. Each child that attended received a pumpkin, was able to jump in the bouncy house and go through our Happy Hay Maze. Families were provided lunch and most families stayed to relax and socialize while their children enjoyed the activi-ties. During this event we were seeking donations of general hy-giene/toiletries products for chil-dren and babies. Even though this was not required to attend, the amount of donated items was awesome for the first time of ask-ing the community for donations of this kind. Meskwaki Family Ser-vices would like to thank the fol-lowing people for their generous donations: Veronica Calderon, Eugenia Castanon, Orielle Ka-payou, Vestana Lasley, Sylvia Brown, Samantha Lasley, Ann Lasley, Jason Jefferson, Char Keahna-Nunez and Joy Bancroft. I would like to thank everyone that helped with the event: Dara Jef-ferson, Mylene Wanatee, Shelly Seymour, Kim Clair and Pam De-gener. I would like to thank Vin-cent Lasley and Lester Lasley for helping to unload all the pumpkins and thanks to Meskwaki Natural Resources for making the Happy Hay Maze.

A BIG SUCCESS FOR ALL
