GMCCI members and Re/Max employees went “green” for last month’s Business After Hours held on Thursday, March 14, hosted by Re/Max at their Muscatine location, 702 Park Avenue. With St. Patrick’s Day just days away Re/Max brought out the green gear and turned their office space into a mini Irish party.

From a single office that opened in 1973 in Denver, Colorado, Re/Max has grown into a global real estate network of franchisee-owned and operated offices, including the office here in Muscatine. It has been built on a foundation of drive, experience and education – which is the cornerstone of Re/Max’s success.

Chamber members got to see this success with many Re/Max agents on hand during the evening. A full St. Patrick’s Day green themed spread allowed members to mingle and feast while networking with other GMCCI and community members.

Door prizes were generously given out at the end of the evening and went to the following: Allison Poulos, Bickford Cottage of Muscatine, Glenn Reif, Lion’s Club, Phil Fitzgerald, City of Muscatine & Fitzgerald Construction, Michale Maharry, UI Healthcare Muscatine and Jodi Newsom, Kellor & Kellor Landscape; all receiving gas cards. Sal LoBianco, Muscatine Power and Water, also received a floral arrangement.

This months’ Business After Hours will be hosted by the Muscatine School District on Thursday, April 11 from 5 to 7 p.m. at at the Muscatine High School – Howe Commons area.

Inspiration, Enthusiasm and Commitment Learned From SCORE Leader’s Passing

The local SCORE team was saddened to hear of news that our District Director, Richard Weeks, passed away on March 6. I know that the other SCORE mentors had worked with Dick longer than I had, me being with SCORE just about a year now, but I did have the opportunity to meet, communicate with and listen to Dick talking about a number of issues where SCORE had an impact. Dick certainly approached his position and working with the various SCORE groups in Iowa with enthusiasm and a healthy dose of what life and reality can offer to the small business person.

In a recent front page article from the Quad City Times: “He was into economic development before people knew what economic development was. There was no curriculum for it, no training for it,” said Scott Tunnicliff, director

of the Hilltop Campus Village in Davenport and the former President and Chief Executive Officer of the Bettendorf Chamber of Commerce. “Dick was very focused on what he did.”

There is an opportunity for a lesson here. We, as a group, are saddened, by this loss. Yet, his commitment and enthusiasm for those striving to open and run small businesses never wavered. In meetings with Dick, I saw a certain collaboration that he had a network and was in communication with that network.

For those folks who aspire to and are committed to the thought of a small business, we see from Dick that the commitment, the enthusiasm, the collaboration and then taking action will serve as wonderful examples for us as SCORE mentors and for every person involved in business. It takes a healthy commitment like Dick Weeks’ to own and run a small business.

The SCORE mentors will learn from Dick’s examples and are committed, like Dick, to helping.

Robbin Block has been evangelizing the benefits of marketing strategy for over 25 years. Part geek, part creative, she’s brought her in-depth knowledge of the Web and its strategic application to business to companies of all sizes and to thousands of readers via her book, Social Persuasion: Making Sense of Social Media for Small Business. This month, Robbin discusses some of social media’s many implications on the crafting and execution of winning small business marketing plans.

What’s the biggest misperception about social media’s role in marketing, and what should entrepreneurs really be doing as they map out a new small business?

Social media can’t solve all your marketing problems. For a business, it needs to be thought of like any other communication tool. You need to understand the fundamentals of marketing — who’s your target audience, where do they get their information, what do they care about, etc.— to find the right media mix that makes sense for you.

What is the most underutilized non-social media marketing method today?

By far, it’s public relations. Many people are afraid of it, or don’t know what it is. Instead they’ll spend money on poorly placed ads that will almost always fail.

What are two or three go-to resources for finding data about your market?

The U.S. Census. A lot of valuable information from the latest census is now being released. Industry associations. Industry trade publications and consumer magazines. Their media kits have great

information about their readers’ demographics and interests.

And many more resources are available at my website, www.blockbeta.com.

Coupons are gaining popularity as a means for luring potential customers. If this option appears right for a small business, what is needed to help turn coupon users into regular customers?

Understand what attracted them in the first place. People who just want a deal are tough to convert. But many customers use coupons to “sample the goods.” To get them to come back and pay full price, use strategic messaging at each touchpoint to help push them down the purchase path. This messaging can be done verbally, through printed materials, online, and even reinforced with “gifts”.

Can you provide an example of how this works?

A Pilates studio I work with has used social coupons to bring in new customers, offering a 7-week program at a discounted rate. Each week, the studio reinforces the benefits of membership and the results the customer would get if they continue taking their classes. Communications include a comprehensive orientation, an introductory gift of a branded water bottle, follow-on emails, etc. It’s a planned program designed to positively reinforce the customer experience. This in combination with excellent service may be enough to convince the customer to continue at full price.

Why should entrepreneurs work with a SCORE small business mentor to develop and monitor their marketing plans?

Marketing needs to be flexible, because the environment within which a business operates is always changing. And the business itself is evolving as new opportunities or threats come to light. A SCORE mentor can help filter the information and focus the entrepreneur on what’s important.

Member Spotlight: Bickford Cottage of MuscatineWho: Bickford Cottage of MuscatineWhat: An assisted living facility that provides many levels of care for its residents.Where: 2807 Cedar Street, Muscatine Website: www.enrichinghappiness.comMember Since: October 1, 1997

The story of Bickford starts with Mary Bickford. Mary was the “nanny” to all and beyond gracious with her time. When she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s her family knew they needed to find a home where Mary would be happy. In 1992, they built the first Bickford in Wichita, KS. They created a space where she had her own apartment, had her own things, courtyard space and independence.

Since then Bickford has grown, with the Muscatine branch built in 1997. The staff members are referred to family members and truly wear many hats – all providing daily care for the residents.

Many levels of care are given at Bickford including: housekeeping, dining services, laundry, personalized care,

companionship, socialization, chapel services, transportation, errand services, apartment maintenance, medication assistance, mobility assistance, healthcare coordination and memory care.

Keeping their residents busy and fulfilled is their priority, inside the residence and outside of Bickford. The community of Bickford is also heavily involved in United Way, Alzheimer’s Association, Juvenile Diabetes Relief Fund walk, GMCCI, as well as volunteer opportunities with Trinity Muscatine, Meals on Wheels and various other community groups.

“Bickford is more involved with working together as a family than even before. We will be making a difference for the families in Muscatine and surrounding areas for years to come and will continue to provide for our residents, and with that we hope to create a huge impact on the quality of life our seniors receive now and in the future.” said Megan Johnson, Director, Bickford Cottage of Muscatine.

GMCCI wishes to thank Bickford Cottage of Muscatine for the continued dedication to the community and to GMCCI. Want your chance in the spotlight? Be sure to attend our next Business After Hours, were you’ll have the chance to be highlighted.

Muscatine’s Golden Key“Muscatine’s Golden Key” is the title of a new painting which is making its public debut in the exhibition, “The Other Side of the Earth” by Chun Arthur Wang. The painting depicts Xi Jinping, newly announced President of the People’s Republic of China. In the foreground is a portrait of then Vice President Xi during his 2012 visit to Muscatine while the background features Xi receiving the key to the City of Muscatine during his 1985 visit. Xi Jinping is believed to be the only person to hold the honor of receiving two keys to the City of Muscatine – one in 1985 and the other in 2012.

Artist Chun Arthur Wang states, “Most Chinese had never heard of ‘Muscatine’ until the Chinese and global press reported on Xi Jinping’s return visit to this Iowa town in 2012. People were touched by the story that Mr. Xi did not forget the local family that hosted him for three days during his visit in 1985. The profound friendship between Mr. Xi and ordinary American people impressed many Chinese people, including me.”

Wang was preparing for his exhibition at the Muscatine Art Center when his family and friends encouraged him to create a painting about Xi Jinping’s connection to Muscatine. Xi is depicted twice in the painting – once as a younger man and once as the new leader of China today. Wang describes his depiction of then Vice President Xi: “Mr. Xi looks high-spirited and vigorous as the dignified and confident new leader. He holds the second key to the City of Muscatine in his left hand while using his right hand to wave to his old friends in Muscatine. From his mild eyes we find his joyfulness in reuniting with his old friends. And from his smile we seem to hear an emotional voice from his heart, ‘Muscatine, I am back after twenty-seven years’.”

The Mississippi River and the Muscatine Bridge are also featured in the painting. The friendship between America and China is symbolized by the Mississippi River both of which “will never be interrupted”, as described by Wang. Behind the clouds, Wang has painted two traditional Chinese vermillion red gates which are open in the middle. These gates are intended to symbolize the opening of friendship between the two countries and also the blending of two different cultures.

The painting, “Muscatine’s Golden Key,” along with 18 other works of art by Chun Arthur Wang will be on view at the Muscatine Art Center through April 21, 2013.

The Muscatine Art Center is located at 1314 Mulberry Avenue in Muscatine, Iowa. Hours are Tuesday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Thursday evenings until 7:00 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. Admission is free. Donations are appreciated.

Mentor a Muskie: MHS Academic Internships Available A program designed to bring Muscatine students and local workplace mentors together to foster career interests. By Janet Morrow, Grow Muscatine

Muscatine High School and Muscatine Connected have partnered to bring MHS Juniors and Seniors work-place experience with the “Mentor A Muskie” Academic Internship program coordinated by Molly Elizalde, MHS Career Exploration Program. This program was developed to give qualifying MHS students a chance to try out their fields of interest and get a real-world taste of the work environment they will join as an adult. The students also earn a half credit toward their graduation requirements.

Last year the program placed 51 students in local part-time positions for 45 hours a week for three weeks. The highest requested work field was marketing including graphic design, social media and web development. This year, Molly has received more requests from students to be placed in nursing, dentistry, physical therapy, law enforcement, engineering, welding and business positions.

A student intern will: • gain experience in creating a professional resume, completing a job application and participating in a mock interview, • receive coaching on being successful and professional in a workplace setting, • have the opportunity to “test-drive” a career before graduating from high school, • gain workplace experience to build your resume, and • start networking prior to entering college.

Last year’s business partners included: Bridgestone Bandag, Carver Aero, Central State Bank, City of Muscatine, Flickinger Learning Center, Geneva Golf & Country Club, HNI/Allsteel/HON, Hy-Vee, Iowa State Extension Office, Kent Corporation, Mercy Family Medicine, Muscatine Art Center, Muscatine Community School District, Muscatine Environmental Learning Center, Muscatine Housing Administration, Muscatine Police Department, Olson Family Dentistry, River Rehabilitation, Rock Valley Physical Therapy, Ruhl & Ruhl, Senior Resources, Stanley Consultants and State Farm Insurance.

New partnerships this year include: Muscatine Fire Department, Muscatine Magazine, Muscatine Physical Therapy Serves and Vision Center, P.C.

Every internship is a valuable learning opportunity. Molly has business partners waiting and willing to mentor a Muskie. Parents and students can contact: Molly Elizalde at (563) 299-3399 or [email protected]

Now Open! Palms Theatre Celebrates Opening with Ribbon Cutting CeremonyJust hours before the Palms Theatre opened the doors to their new $9 million dollar theatre, they cut the ribbon with fellow GMCCI members and community officials.

After announcing this state-of-the-art project in 2012, the community of Muscatine has been patiently waiting for the doors to open. With 10 theatres, expanded concessions, stadium seating with leather rockers, a birthday party room, RealD 3D, 7.1 Dolby Sound, a 21+ auditorium with adult beverages and a huge 249-seat theatre with Dolby Atmos sound, this mega-plex has something for everyone. With ticket prices ranging from $7-$13, this new theatre is still proving to be very affordable.

Those in attendance for the Ribbon Cutting were able to get an up close visual of the theatre before it opened to the public, and a short 3D viewing in the large theatre and with its Dolby Atmos surround sound.

The Palms 10 Theatres is located at 3611 Palms Drive (corners of Hwy. 61 & Mulberry) in Muscatine. For showtimes call 563-264-2424 or visit www.fridleytheatres.com/muscatine.

March is National Nutrition Month

Building a Balanced Meal

Be mindful of what you put on your plate this month, and eat more balanced meals with these tips from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Fruits and Veggies You know by now the importance of fruits and vegetables in your diet. They are low in fat and calories and full of fiber, vitamins, and other nutrients

Eat a variety of veggies, especially dark green, red and orange vegetables plus beans and peas.

Health and convenience can go together: fresh, frozen, or canned vegetables all are great sources of veggies.

Choose “reduced sodium” or “no-salt-added” canned vegetables

Add fruit to both meals and snacks Buy fruits that are dried, frozen or canned

in water or 100% juice, as well as fresh fruits of course

At lunch and dinner, divide your plate in half with an imaginary line and fill half with vegetables and fruits. Add Whole Grains Minimally processed whole grains, like whole-wheat bread, multi-grain cereal, oatmeal, brown rice and whole-grain pastas, are also rich in nutrients, fiber and flavor. About a quarter of your plate should consist of whole grains.

The Power of Proteins Meats are not the only way to get the protein your body needs. To vary your protein sources try: Legumes (dried beans and peas) Fat-free and low-fat dairy foods (cheese,

cottage cheese, yogurt and milk) Lean beef, pork, chicken, and turkey Fish and seafood

Aim for 2 to 3 ounces of lean meat (about the size of a deck of cards) or the equivalent amount of beans (about 1/2 cup) per meal. A serving of protein will complete the plate in your balanced meal. Don’t Forget the Beverage When choosing beverages, stay away from sugary drinks, which have lots of calories and no nutritional value. Opt for water for most meals and throughout

the day Choose fat-free or low-fat milk rather than

whole milk to receive the same amount of calcium and nutrients, but less fat and calories

If you are lactose intolerant, try lactose-free milk or calcium–fortified soy milk

For more information on creating balanced meals for you and your

family, visit www.ChooseMyPlate.gov.
