Rome, May 21

Fourth seed Elina Svitolina

successfully defended her

Italian Open title on Sunday with

a dominant 6-0 6-4 victory over

an out-of-sorts Simona Halep.

World number one Halep

came through a tough

three-set semi-final against

Maria Sharapova on Saturday

and was well off the pace,

failing to coax even a single

break point opportunity the

entire match.

“It’s amazing that I could come

and defend my title here. It’s

really something very special

for me,” Svitolina said after

defeating Halep in the Rome

final for the second year in

succession.

The Ukrainian, who has now

won the last eight finals she has

appeared in, stormed out of the

blocks and kept Halep under

relentless pressure, serving at

Elina Svitolina dominates Simona Halep

a high level and chasing down

everything the Romanian sent

her way.

Halep converted only 15

percent of her first serves into

points in a dire first set, and

though she improved that ratio

in the second, she made a total

of 21 unforced errors to end

any hopes of a comeback.

Svitol ina wrapped up the

victory in 67 minutes on her

second match point, leaping into

the air in celebration as Halep

tamely netted a backhand.

On current form the Ukrainian

will be surely ranked among

the favourites to triumph at the

French Open. The Roland

Garros showpiece begins on

May 27, and Svitolina insisted

that she would not get ahead of

herself.

“I will try to take one match at a

time, it’s very important in a

grand slam,” she added. “It’s

very tricky so we’ll see how it

goes, but definitely I’m going to

enjoy (going to) Roland

Garros on a high note.”

Barcelona, May 21

Barcelona wrapped up their

Liga campaign on Sunday with

a win over Real Sociedad as

they finished the season top of

the pile.

Ernesto Valverde’s men

clinched the title weeks ago

now, but Sunday also brought

confirmation that Lionel Messi

had won his fifth Golden Shoe.

It’s been another amazing

season for Messi and it’s no

surprise to see him topping the

standings again. It’s also the

sixth time he’s been La Liga top

scorer.

He’s been rested in the last

couple of games so could

probably have scored even

more than the 34 La Liga goals,

woodwork he ended up with.

Messi will be in action over the

summer in Russia as he tries to

inspire Argentina to World Cup

glory.

Calling Gita Govindam a remarkable piece of literature,

the Vice President complemented Sri Guruvayurappan

Shri E. Sreedharan.

The Vice President said that we continue to revive

quality of our lives and the lives of the people of the

and blissful universal vision of our country. He

further said that Gita Govindam’s unusually wide

love for Radha. The story of Sri Krishna has a deep

resonance in the Indian hearts and the composition

is so lyrical and melodious that it is eminently suitable

for various adaptations by musicians and dancers,

he added.

The Vice President said that philosophy, spirituality,

The quest for a deeper meaning of life, quest for zest

Rafael Nadal returns to

World No 1 with Rome titleRome, May 21

Rafael Nadal returned to top of

the ATP rankings a week after

he lost the spot to Roger

Federer. As per the updated

rankings on Monday, Nadal is

once again the World No 1

having won the Rome Masters

event on Sunday. A 6-1, 1-6,

6-3 victory over Alexander

Zverev in a rain-interrupted

final in Rome ensured the 31-

year-old would leapfrog

Federer and become world

number one for a sixth time

ahead of the French Open. The

second grand slam of the year

gets underway on Sunday

(May 27).

With Federer skipping the clay

court season for a second year

in a row, the top seeding was

long assured for Nadal who will

head to Paris a strong favourite

to get his hands on the Coupe

des Mousquetaires for a

record-extending 11th time.

“Everything will be different in

Paris,” Nadal said somewhat

disingenuously after his victory

at the Foro Italico. “Of course a

win like this helps but in Paris

the conditions will be different

in every respect. Today is the

time to enjoy this victory, not for

thinking about Roland Garros.”

“I played one of the best sets

that I played on clay this year.

First set was fantastic, in my

opinion, in terms of everything,”

he added. “Feeling, good

shots, tactically — everything

was, in my opinion great in the

first set, no. Returning great. All

the things that I wanted to do

happened. So, it was a great

set.” Zverev, who had won

back-to-back claycourt titles

over the previous two weeks

in Munich and Madrid, stays

constant at World No 3 and will

enter French Open as the

second seed. Marin Cilic, who

reached the semifinals in Rome,

moved a place over Grigor

Dimitrov to World No 4 with the

Bulgarian suffering a first round

exit for a second week running.

Novak Djokovic who lost to

Nadal in the semifinals and had

arguably his best tournament

in the year, slid further in the

rankings. By dropping four

places, the Serbian now stands

at World No 22.
