  • Inclusive Education at our School

Students enrolled at our school come from increasingly diverse social, cultural and family backgrounds with many identities and of all abilities. It is very important for all these students to experience success in an environment that embraces the diversity they bring. Every student succeeding means that every single child can get access to world class teaching and learning. Every student succeeding also means that there will be a focus on each child and their learning needs and where we talk about success in terms of learning and well being. As a Department of Education school we are committed to inclusive practices and we have a focus on how we can improve. This commitment means that all children in our local area are welcome to attend and have the opportunity to fully engage in the curriculum alongside similar aged peers. Library News LIBRARY MATTERS The last day for student loans this year is Friday 20th November. This is a week earlier than what has been our usual practice. We continue to be impacted by Department of Education directives with respect to our Covid management procedures here in the library. A number remain in force, including the rule that all returned items are placed in quarantine for 72 hours and the rules about adults (including volunteers) not being on site. The result is that we have less hands available to do more work. We need a longer timeframe to conduct all our library and resource room 'end of year' procedures. All student loans have a ‘master date due’ of Friday 27th November. We would really appreciate it if you could do what you can to ensure that any library books that students have in their posses-sion after 27th November get returned to the library promptly. Thanks Margaret Kittson (teacher-librarian)

Hi, my name is Shlok – I am a student representative of 6DW. I am a passionate boy who always seeks to help others. I actually ran for school captain and house captain, but I did not achieve any of those positions. That’s okay though. I just wanted to be in a position to change our school for the better. My favourite sports are soccer and swimming, and I really like Rubik’s Cubes. I have great friends, and I also do Year 8 maths instead of Year 6. It is great to be able to tell you all about my life. By, Shlok K

Blues Cup 2020 What a fantastic weekend of touch football. Holland Parks State School registered a girls and boys team into the Blues Cup touch football competition. This competition is organise by the Touch Academy at Runcorn State High School and is directed at primary schools. Both teams were able to progress form their pool division into the elimination rounds. While it was a very strong competition, our teams have set a pathway for future participation and I look forward to nominating teams again 2021. An outstanding effort from Jack A, Raja B, Oliver D, Ethan H, Jonathan K, Max M, Charlie M, Tate R, Beau W, Elliot W, Oliver W, Emma B, Evie C, Emily C, Andrea F, Lorelai G, Mya G, Tessa I, Charlotte K, Stella L, Mia M, Sienna N, Natalie S, Piper T and Natalie W. We asked some of the children what they love about books and Book Week and here are some of their responses. I love Book Week because I can express myself. Nellie R Books are funny, I like the pictures. Xavier V A book is like a door to another world. Chloe T I like Book Week because I can show everyone my favourite book by dressing up as the character. Trixie W I love to lose myself in a world of characters and fiction nonsense. Ronan S Books are better than movies because movies miss things out but books have every single little detail. Annika K I love to see all the cool costumes. Chelsea F Book Week is sooooo much fun. Merryn W You get to be someone or something else for Book Week. Emil A

Page 7 Holland Park State `School Newsletter

For the last few weeks, Holland Park SS students have been celebrating NAIDOC week. Usually in July, but postponed this year due to COVID-19, we have taken the opportunity to learn more about the First Australians. In week four of this term, we had an incursion that involved a performance by the highly entertaining Indigenous artist, Sean Choolburra. In week five, all students took place in a olouring-in competition inspired by the artwork displayed on this year's poster which encapsulates this year's NAIDOC week theme, "Always was, always will be." This week, as students visited the library, they have been entertained by their teachers sharing Dreaming stories, and inspired by artwork and artefacts on display. We respectfully acknowledge the traditional owners of the land our school is placed on; the Jagera people; and pay our respects to elders, past, present and emerging.

We have started a new project at HPSS. It is called Pen Recycling. Norah’s mother started this project at a small private school in America where her family lived previously before moving here. This is where we got our inspiration and information from. Teachers and students at our school use up a big number of writing instruments, more than any average home or apartment. When we started this project we were painting the boxes all around the outside purple and adding orange stripes to make them stand out. Now we are nearing the end of the year, so we are not painting the bottom or the orange stripes. Now that we have spoken on assembly both junior and senior, both of us with the help of Mr. Gribbin, Mrs Walker, Mrs Whittaker, Mrs Dedrie, the library and all of the helpful student volunteers, we were able to make this project happen. Giving up our break times and some lunch times to paint these bins it was hard but as did it we got used to it. Both of us agree it was totally worth it. Hopefully kids can embrace this project at school and keep it running for the entire future of HPSS. It will, in the future help the school money wise just like Mr Walker’s wonderful “Containers for Change” program. Doing sustainable things has certainly helped the school, here is how your family could help! We thought that if send your pens into the school with your child to put in their class’s pen bin. We can get those pens recycled as well. Your helping the school get more funds from the project and you won’t feel bad about sending your pens out to a landfill or a dump. For the good and wellbeing of this wonderful planet please take our ideas into account. From Norah H and Pippa M
