Student free days on 10 and 11 December 2020 The Director-General has asked principals to communicate this letter you. Dear Parents Your patience and flexibility during this pandemic have been extraordinary. This year will be remembered for many things, not least a year of challenge, uncertainty and great complexity. Everyone has been affected by COVID-19. While many in our communities across the state have contributed to ensuring Queensland families remain healthy and safe, I think we all would agree our state school teachers and school staff leading our childrens education. In recognition of their outstanding efforts during the pandemic, the Queensland Government has declared the last two days of Term 4, 2020, Thursday 10 December and Friday 11 December, 2020, allocated as student free days. Schools will be closed on these days. This will come as great news for those who are keen to begin their school holidays early. For some families, alternative arrangements will need to be made for the care of children on these two days. The Director-General has asked principals to communicate this letter you. Dear Parents Your patience and flexibility during this pandemic have been extraordinary. Opening of the Centre for STEM and the Arts

It was great to have the Honourable Grace Grace, Minister for Education and Industrial Relations, here yesterday to open our Centre for STEM and the Arts. While Covid imposed some restrictions on how the ceremony could be held, it was wonderful to have a good representation of parents, staff and students on hand to witness the opening.

The icing on the cake was the Minister’s commitment to the completion of the building’s renovation. As you know, the

Creative Dance This week marks the end of this year’s dance program. Once again, we had a terrific range of styles, techniques and sequences as instructed by the team at Creative Dance Industries. Though there was not an opportunity to ‘showcase’ the students’ achievement through a disco this year, classes were able to perform for their peers and other class groups. I had the pleasure of watching some presentations and it was great to students really enjoying themselves in this element of the Arts.

Year 4 - Save the Animals Over the past few weeks some girls form year four have seen me wanting to promote their cause of ‘Saving Animals’ from harm. We have met extensively with the girls developing a short scripts and promotional posters to encourage their peers to consider the dangers of some human actions on animals. This week, this group of ‘warriors’ presented their views to their class. I have been most impressed by the determination and commitment of these girls over this time. Well done!

2021 - Student Leaders As you know, we have now begun the 2021 Student Leader selection process. School captain nominations are in! In week one next term, we will listen to the nomination speeches by these students. Over term 4, we will progress through the various selection stages. After the captains, it will be sporting captains then the range of music and cultural positions. We will post more information around this process next term. Leigh Harrod Deputy Principal

relaxed. Now I know why this place was so special. Abi Pullenvale was a fantastic place, the birds, all the history we learnt there and the creek. The creek had birds and the nature was just fantastic! If I had a chance, I would go back for sure. It is such a beautiful place. The classroom felt so really and the role-play was a lot different than I expected. Alex. Pullenvale was what I imagined and more. Listening to the noises at the beautiful, glistening creek made me feel calm and collected. Jaimee At Pullenvale, I learnt many new things including what the bush kids did and how they did it. I liked how it was set in 1897 and how we got to role-play as bush kid. All over, I loved the Pullenvale excursion. Oliver Some pictures from 5SG’s adventures to Pullenvale are over the page.

Year 5 Pullenvale Excursion

Over the past two weeks, our year 5 students have been attending the Pullenvale Environmental Education Centre for their “Hookwinked” excursion. During the excursion, our year 5 students became ‘2020 Bush Kids’ and used their scientific and historical knowledge and understanding of place, and a deep connection to nature, to inspire them to work together to solve environmental problems and make a difference in their local community. Here are some thoughts from 5SY about their excursion - Pullenvale was a great excursion; you get to go on an awesome bushwalk down to the creek. A fun thing we did was going into Paddy’s camp to look for clues. Nicole When we were acting as kids in the classroom from the 1800s, we got to write on slates and we wrote on paper with ink and metal pencils. Avie Pullenvale is so fun. I loved the creek it was so relaxing and calming and made me feel

then finally decided on one burger. We had to work out the cost to make the burger, work out how much to sell the burger for and work out how much profit we would make for each burger, then create promotional deals and a colourful poster. Finally, the students presented their ideas to the classes and QUT, who will be using our work in a research project. Gordon 6CS This term, year 6 was assigned a new business and economics task. For all day on Monday and Tuesday, students worked on a proposal for a new burger stall to represent HPSS at a Mott Park market day. Staff from QUT came in and observed students as they worked with their group, and some groups were recorded or filmed. Each group of students would use mathematical skills and strategies to determine the cost of each burger, any discounts their stall would offer, and their projected profit. Each group came up with two burgers to sell and then determined the trade off and the opportunity costs to pick just one burger to sell. Some burgers included the Skyscraper, the BB Burger, the Happy Classic, and the Cheezee Beef Burger. Students were also asked to create a poster to advertise their stall at the market day. Posters displayed their burger, the group name and any discounts offered to customers. Then on Thursday, groups were asked to present their burger stall business proposal to the class and answer a series of questions about their stall; why they chose the burger that they did, and what mathematical or economical skills they used to create their stall and their burger. Overall, it was a fun and educational experience. Emily S. Last week, all year 6’s participated in the Market Day Business and Economics and Mathematics project. The objective of this task was to create 2 burgers then choose 1 to sell at a Market day burger stall run by HPSS. During, this market day project we had to calculate multiple real life prices, find out our projected profit and how many burgers we would sell. We had to create a catchy poster to persuade people to buy our burger. At

Year 6 Mathematical Modelling in Business and Economics

This term, year six teachers and students have been working in partnership with researchers from QUT to develop a new business and economics unit that also integrates mathematics modelling. The researchers, led by Professor Lyn English, worked with teachers in implementing a range of modelling activities linked to the Australian curriculum and based on a real-world situation. The mathematics modelling activities in the task were designed to support students’ learning not only in mathematics and statistics but also in economics and business and literacy. A critical feature of modelling-based experiences is the pro-vision of group reporting time. Sharing their models with their peers at the conclusion of the task enabled constructive class feedback including questions about each group’s model developments. Here are some thoughts about the task from some of our year 6 students in 6CS and 6DW:

Year 6 HASS Business and Economics and

QUT Market Day Maths Modelling Activity

Last week, all year 6’s took part in a Market Day Stall task. This involved; creating a burger and stall idea to raise money for HPSS and calculating a discount to have off our burgers. We also had to work out of the different costs including profits and design an eye catching and colourful poster. At the end we had to present a speech about our stall to the class/s. Overall, I really enjoyed this project as I have learnt many new business and economics skills. Olivia.H The Market Day Activity was about groups coming up with an idea for a stall selling burgers at the Mott Park Markets for our new business and economics unit of HASS. The (imaginary) Mott Park Markets run from 6:00am to 3:00pm and are expected to host 1000 people from the surrounding community to visit all the stalls. Students competed to be the only group from Holland Park State School to run a burger stall. Each group designed two burgers to promote and

Good Afternoon HP Families! The HPSS Student Council will be holding three fundraising events at the end of the year to raise funds for several charity organisations, as well as giving back to projects here at Holland Park State School. Our first event was a free dress day on Tuesday, September 8th which was to raise much needed money to support families suffering the effects of domestic violence. The charity is Beyond DV who help to support the relocation of parents and children who are fleeing from dangerous situations. In Term Four, we will be hosting events to help support the Eloise Gannon Foundation and Cancer Council. Due to the effects of Covid-19, we will not be asking families to bring in gold coin donations this year. Instead, we are reaching out to our HPSS families to support these causes with an online donation. We are asking that you make a one-off donation that will support all three of our events for the remainder of the year and we will leave it up to you to decide what contribution you would like to make. Donations can be made to: Account Name: Holland Park State School BSB: 064-112 Account Number: 00090133 Reference: Please use student’s initial, family name and activity as the reference. If you are paying for more than 1 student please include the year level, student’s initial and family name. We thank you in advance for your generous support of these causes.

HPE Asia Week 2020 This is our fifth year celebrating Asia week and it is wonderful that our students have the opportunity to participate in a variety of traditional games. I am really impressed with the amount of students and teachers that supported this celebration and the many awesome Asian related costumes that were worn throughout the week. Students have had the opportunity to learn a variety of traditional games from India, Thailand, Myanmar, Japan and Cambodia. We have been very fortunate to have been supported by Kothari International School located in Delhi, India. They provided a range of cultural videos created by students and teachers that have been shared to our school. We look forward to strengthening this international collaboration. I would also like to acknowledge Mrs Black for setting up our Myanmar display in Prep. Japanese Club The Japanese Club created a Japanese Café to coincide with the Asia Week celebrations. Planning has been in place from early in the year and students have spent many hours preparing. Our café was located in classrooms in lower H Block with 26 staff members participating during lunch break. It was a fabulous time with a variety of menu items. I would like to acknowledge the following students for their contributions to making a very special and successful cafe. Phoebe B, Kayala B, May T, Maya D, Charlotte L, Madeleine J, Ella S, Sophie O, Abbey T, Evalina P, Ava G, Dania V, Olivia H, Romi V, Kaia S, Grace R and Olivia T. Thank you also to our wonderful staff that supported the Cafe. Term 4 Aquatics Aquatics will commence week 1, term 4. In order for our aquatic lessons to meet the required curriculum activity risk assessments, it is necessary to have a volunteer spotter at all aquatics lessons. In the event that a volunteer spotter is unavailable students will be offered an alternative physical education lesson. Please note that Prep aquatic lessons have a higher ratio for aquatics and will require four in-pool volunteers in addition to the supervising teacher and poolside spotter. Additional information has been distributed via email. Please note that Covid-19 restrictions will be in place and only
