Message from the Board Chairman John DeLoach
So much is happening at The Club and renovations are becoming much more evident. Just look at
the progress of our water project; it’s well underway and looking good. The recent rain is helping
the project and the golf course enormously.
April’s Member Mixer showcased the tennis center and provided an opportunity for all to enjoy an entertaining
evening outside in such a nice area. The staff provided tremendous support.
Taste of the Northside was a huge success in spite of the rain. Many Sonterra members joined the general public to
support the Brighton School’s major fundraiser. Thanks goes out to all members for giving up free reign of your
club for this worthy event.
I also had the chance in April to participate in a focus group with several members and senior club management—
an opportunity to gather information to have your voices heard while continuing to improve our club. Thanks to all
for helping make Sonterra better than ever.

I would like to thank everyone who is
involved in the offering of this
scholarship. Most are aware of the
ongoing jokes of how difficult being a
college student is; this is true. College
life is difficult and this scholarship was
able to lessen the burden of my tuition,
therefore I am tremendously grateful.
This scholarship is helping me further
my education in the field of Mass Communications at Texas
State University. More specifically I am studying electronic
media and its future in society. The specificity of electronic
media is ironically broad. Due to this I have not decided on my
future occupation, but I would like to further explore electronic
media in the realm of sports. Once again I would like to thank
the Sonterra staff and its members for this scholarship and
investing in my future.

As I write this from a spouse’s point of view, (Chris is already on the course) it’s hard to
believe it’s already May. We moved into our Sonterra home last year about this time,
after being members for a couple of years. To be honest, the membership was initially all
about Chris and his golf game, but once I got a chance to connect, it all changed. Every
member that I have been introduced to (or introduced myself to) has been warm and
welcoming. A great blend of friends with diverse backgrounds and experiences that
surprisingly, have at least one thing in common (besides golf). We’ve had a chance to
make some wonderful friends and start some wonderful annual traditions.
Before we lived in Sonterra, we had a chance to attend some fun activities sponsored by the Club but it makes it so
much easier now that we can travel by golf cart. I had never driven a golf cart until a month ago, now I am thinking
I may need to get one of my own.
Sometimes spouses and families can feel left out and as Ambassadors, we have a chance to help welcome new
members to connect with new friends. It all starts with showing up and trying something new. If we haven’t met
you yet, please come up and say hello.
We are looking forward to a wonderful summer full of fun social events at the Club and with friends, squeezed in
between a crazy work schedule and a few days in Vegas and at the coast with family. Happy Mother’s Day to all
the moms and congratulations to all the Graduates - it’s going to be a busy month.

“A Note from the Director of Golf”
Zach Ramsey
Beginners Etiquette
Ok, before I begin, I must say that I often drive the course
catch myself looking at players as I see them. Without fail
almost every grouping shows some sort of breech in basic
golf etiquette. Now keeping in mind that this is a country
club, most playing groups are friends of one another, so this is
completely understandable. I mean it is very normal to hear
and see him/her talking on purpose during the backswing (a
big “NO NO” in basic golf etiquette) of a fellow competitor. I
myself have played with a lot of golfers who truly take the game of golf seriously and a lot of golfers who don’t.
It’s ok to have fun out there, keeping in the back of your mind respect for other players who do take this game
seriously. Saying that, I felt writing this article for our monthly newsletter would be beneficial to those beginners in
this wonderful game of Golf. Since 50 percent of your shots/strokes are made around or on the green, we will start
where the scoring occurs. Around the green can be a little more complex than teeing areas for a beginner. Fix as
many ball marks as you can, besides your own. A lot of golfers do not fix their ball marks on approaches to the
green. Sometimes the players get excited about their golf shot and forget. If it is a little backed up out there or you
have no one behind you, take a couple minutes to repair all the marks you can find.
There are typically three or four golf balls on the green at a time. The key goal here is to not walk on the
other player’s line from their ball to the hole. You should mark your ball when walking up to it for the first time.
When approaching your golf ball, you have to be careful as to where you walk. Another player’s line should not
have a big footprint in it. Try stepping over the players line or go around it carefully watching where you are
stepping, looking out for this line might cause you to step in someone else’s line, so just be alert. When another
golfer is about to putt, stay still and he/she makes their putting stroke, unless they give you the ok to walk. When
you must walk to where you want to go, do not stop, walk, stop, and walk again. It could be more distracting than a
continuing walk. The golfer closest to the hole should tend the pin. Ask your competitor if they stick pulled, left
alone, or tended. When tending the pin be careful not to cast a shadow over the player’s line. Also keep the flag
from waiving in the wind by holding it against the flagstick. If all player’s are fairly close then you can just ask if
anybody needs the flag, if they all agree no one needs it, just simply lay the flagstick down in a safe place where it
cannot be hit by any putt.
You have to begin each hole from the same place, the tee box. Think of this closely mowed area as a stage.
Each person that tee’s up there ball has the spotlight on them. Try to remain quiet and out of the way of the golfers
view. Be careful where you stand so you don’t cast a shadow in the player’s sight. Try not to stand opposite of the
player, it is better if you stand at least three club lengths in back of him or behind him. Act like a caddie when
another player plays a shot. Watch the ball till you see it stop, mark it with a tree or bush. Often player’s get caught
up in there shot they lose sight of it, you can help them. Try to refrain from yelling nice shot or great shot when
around other tee areas. If you must tell a joke, wait till it’s you stage,
The game of Golf was created out of fun. Some take it more seriously than others. Follow these tips and
everyone should have fun playing this wonderful game we call Golf

Tennis News- Michelle Dodier, Director of Tennis
What a fantastic first four months-- USTA leagues, club
leagues, tournaments, playoffs and more signs added to
the list of accomplishments. We just finished one of
our biggest events of the year—our Member Guest tour-
nament and I will have the results and pictures in the
next newsletter. As always this event was filled within 30
minutes. Thank you members for your great support and
participation.
If you haven’t signed up for the Club Doubles Champion-
ship you still have time. If you need help finding a partner
we can help you. This event is held over a weekend so
hopefully more members can play. Hope you are available. Our club leagues
have ended but USTA leagues continue as does playoffs and preparation for
sectionals. You can see the depth of our strength by our teams having to play
each other to go onto sectionals. Another great season for Sonterra tennis!
How do you like the new windscreens, the logo’d court 1, the comfortable new
furniture that extends to court 7 and the increased sitting area on the upper patio?
I’ve only heard positive reviews and noticed a few members snoozing on our
sling back chairs. The pro shop is starting to fill up and we are on our way back
folks. Thanks for your patience through it all. We are still in the process of our
spring cleaning so there is more to come.
As a Director you are always listening to the positives and negatives of your
facility and of course work on correcting and improving those negative items. I
feel we are heading in the right direction. The one positive message that stands
out for me is the member’s love of their friendships they have built since joining
Sonterra. I have seen it first hand and see that tennis got people together and
friendships were built and extend way beyond the sport. Let’s keep enjoying
what Sonterra has to offer and the fun that tennis has added to our lives.
Please take a look at the Winner’s Circle and congratulate your fellow member at
their success. It is wonderful to see how many participate in our local and state
wide tournaments. Keep up the good work. Also, please send pictures and
information to us about you or your child. We love bragging about you.

join Mike and learn all the basics that will move you along in
the right direction where there is no turning back. He will help
you get to the team tennis level of play and then guide you
through that as well. Just ask the many players who can’t get

learning this sport fun and the clothes are just out of this
world cute. Email Mike for more information and start now –
The Ball Machine Club-
Our new ball machine is all that it was made out to be-fantastic. Its huge
success is attributed to the many drills that it will produce for you. You
can design your own drill, use your iPhone and design twice as many pat-
terns- the options are unlimited. Our staff will be able to help you with the
many uses of this machine. Take advantage of the down time between
leagues- work on trouble areas, new shots, take a lesson on the ball ma-
chine--just try it you won’t be disappointed. We can show you drills so
multiple players can get a workout. They say it takes 10,000.00 balls to
get a shot down-what number are you on?
Adult Mixed Doubles Ladder- March 5 -November 18th
The mixed ladder is now in progress and Scott has 23 teams signed up so far. If
you want to play mixed doubles and don’t have a partner let us help you with
that problem. Mixed doubles is fun, it’s social and it will hone up those spe-
cialty shots. It’s not too late to sign up—call Scott. The premise is the same as
the singles ladder. No more than one point difference in partners. All levels will
be included on one ladder, highest ranked teams to lowest. One assigned match
per month must be played (how hard is that.) If you would like to signup,
please contact the pro shop or email Scott at [email protected]

Note from Josh-Junior Team Tennis
I just want to say WOW!! What a blast over the past couple of weekends of Junior Team Tennis. I am so very proud of each and everyone
who showed up to play this season. We had a great run with two teams finishing in first place heading to sectionals. First off, Sonterra's 10's
Green Dot Team Vamos did very well during the local play off tournament down at McFarland. They did so well they were up 10 games
going into the final playoff round for first and second. We struggled with the second place team our first go around, but we ended up playing
very solid Sunday with a substantial victory on each line they played. They will be going to the 2018 JTT State Championships here in San
Antonio, TX May 18-20th. Thank you parents for being so patient and understanding during some tough times this season.
Next up is our 14's Sonterra Team Dominators!! I am very proud of our team with only one loss this season they ended up on top. They were
up only four games going in the last playoff round and won in convincing fashion to secure our spot in the JTT State Championships in San
Antonio, TX May 18-20th! They had style, they had grit, they almost forgot how to play a tiebreaker a couple of times... but they took it
down! (We need to work on the tiebreakers lol)
Last but definitely not least, our Sonterra Team Strike! They had some very very tough, long, grueling matches this season. The 18's Inter-
mediate pool was strong this time, with eight teams competing. This team was down about 24 games going into the playoffs for first and
second and had to stop the first place team from winning twelve games, whilst winning every single line. Tall order! They did their very
best, however at the end of the day Ace 10S Gold was too far ahead. The good news is they actually beat them in the match, the only team in
the league to have done that. Very proud. They ended up placing 2nd in the division with a strong chance at a sectionals wild card. Overall a
very strong showing for the junior development program at Sonterra!!
