Celebrating
1964
Message from the President
Greetings to all of you from Bishop DuBourg High
School! I have become re-energized by the mission
of Bishop DuBourg since becoming President on
July 1, 2013. As previous administrators so often
stated: it is the people of Bishop DuBourg – students, parents,
faculty and staff, alumni and other stakeholders – who are the
precious treasure of our mission. The people of Bishop DuBourg
make all of our planning and efforts to educate our students and
form disciples worthwhile, enjoyable and fruitful.
Our Faith Formation Team (FFT) recently completed an assess-
ment of our faith formation program which can be found on
our website at www.bishopdubourg.org/db/faith-service. This
assessment re-affirmed many of our efforts in Religion classes,
campus ministry and maintaining a Catholic culture at Bishop
DuBourg; it also pointed out some specific recommendations
for improvement. Please read the abridged version (11 pages) or
full version (117 pages) on our website. I am grateful to the entire
team, especially Dr. Mike Bahr and his wife, Dr. Christine (Nauert)
Bahr, DB ’76, who led the effort.
Academically, we continue to serve a wide variety of students.
We pride ourselves on being a comprehensive school that can meet
the needs of the academically gifted and those who significantly
struggle with learning. Our co-ed makeup also enriches our
diversity. This year, our Academy of Advanced Studies inducted 19
students from the class of 2018 and three from the class of 2017.
Chief Dennis Jenkerson ’76 served as keynote speaker.
As Bishop DuBourg ventures into the future, we are examining
ways to improve our gym roof, our technology infrastructure and
services, science labs and endowment. Our Board and various
teams are helping us discern ways to fund these improvements
and involve our stakeholders in the process.
On April 23rd & 24th, we will host an External Review Team
Visit as part of our AdvancED school accreditation process.
During this visit, the team conducts interviews, reviews school
documents and student performance data and makes profes-
sional observations to determine the degree to which the school
meets Standards for accreditation. We will use the findings from
the team to further our continuous improvement efforts.

advisory Board news:
Bishop DuBourg re-vamped its Board structure in 2013-14 by start-
ing a Donor Development Team that helps our Advancement Office
in recruiting for and promoting our events, helping with alumni
reunions, and increasing participation in our DB Forever Annual Fund. We
also established a Facilities Team to help us prioritize and plan our capital
improvements. A Solar Panel Team was formed in May, 2013 to help oversee
the installation of one solar panel array on our easternmost roof that covers
the Music and Family and Consumer Science classrooms. Our DB Advisory
Board of Education meets three times per year; members of this “big board”
meet regularly in regular team meetings. Members of these teams, as well as
our DB Advisory Board, can be found below.

2 The Cavalier
In March of 1964, the Cavalier basketball team
brought home Bishop DuBourg’s first State Title.
This team’s “red-clad conquest” left their mark
in Bishop DuBourg history. The ’64 team played for
State in the Washington University Field House vs. the
Parkview Vikings and clinched the title with a 62-52
victory.
On March 8, 2014, the 50th anniversary of their
historic achievement, the team received the highest
athletic honor a DB alum can achieve — induction into
the Athletic Hall of Fame (see Hall of Fame story on
page 16).
The DB community wanted to connect the ’64 team
with the current student body, allowing them to meet
firsthand DB history. Members of the team returned
to their old stomping grounds and were honored at
the Winter Pep Rally. Standing in center court of the
gym where it all started, the members of the ’64 team
received a standing ovation from an enthusiastic DB
crowd. Showing that age hasn’t slowed them down,
they competed in a free throw contest. Our “Rowdy
Crowd” gave them the cheers they deserved. The 2014
Varsity basketball team was honored to meet these leg-
endary Cavaliers whose 1964 victory still echoes in the
main lobby and in Ray Bayens Alumni Hall where their
memorabilia is proudly displayed.
That same evening our legendary team returned
to campus for a recep-
tion. They were guests
at the Varsity basket-
ball game vs. Kennedy
Catholic High School.
At halftime the ’64
Cavaliers signed a
basketball commemo-
rating their 50th anni-
versary. Standing at half court in the Floyd Hacker Gymnasium
the team of ’64 received yet another standing ovation. Their DB
spirit is still going strong even after 50 years — once a Cavalier
always a Cavalier! The celebration confirmed the DB motto
that every day truly is a “Great Day to be a Cavalier!”

The Academy of Advanced Studiesadvance, achieve, succeed
The Academy of Advanced Studies was established
in 2012 to offer students a rigorous academic pro-
gram. DB faculty and staff challenge their students
to achieve an extremely high level of academic excellence.
We want our students to realize that their talents are a gift
from God, to be developed and used for others.
Students are accepted into the program during admis-
sions. Space in the program is limited for each grade level.
Students must score 85% or above on standardized tests
and/or have a B+ average to be considered as candidates.
Each year the students enroll in an Academy Seminar
Course in Social Studies or Religion and in courses designed
as enriched, honors, advanced, or college credit. These
classes move fast and require independent work.
Students in the program have additional gradua-
tion requirements. They must take 16 enriched, honors,
advanced, college credit or seminar courses during their
four years. They must exemplify hard work and responsibil-
ity, demonstrate leadership, respect for others, maintain
excellent attendance, and have at least a 3.5 G.P.A.
Now in its third year, the Academy boasts members of
the Classes of 2015, 2016, and 2017 for a total of 49 students.
The Academy welcomed 19 new students from the Class of
2018 and three from the Class of 2017 during an induction
ceremony on March 13, 2014.
Each year the Academy hosts a guest speaker. The
2012 inaugural class welcomed Colonel Jeannie M. (Flynn)

the sweet sound of victory
For the first time in recent history at Bishop DuBourg our Cavaliers were represented in both the Missouri All-State
Choir and the Missouri All-State Jazz Band. For junior bassist Nathan Pence (right) and junior vocalist
Jordan Wolk (left), the road to state began in October 2013 when they auditioned for the St. Louis All-District Jazz Band and St. Louis All-District Choir respectively. Both competed against talented high school students from throughout the St. Louis area for the chance to join these exclusive groups.
Nathan, after being named an alternate last year, made the Jazz Band as the top high school jazz bassist in St. Louis.
Jordan made the Choir as one of the top high school bass voices in St. Louis.
Both young men performed successfully with these groups in November 2013.
Their journey was not over. By making the St. Louis All-District ensembles, Nathan and Jordan then qualified to audition for top honors in the state of Missouri. In December 2013 both auditioned for their respective groups, competing against the best in the state. Amazingly, both young men were winners!
Nathan made the All-State Jazz Band as the top high school jazz bassist, and Jordan made the Choir as one of the state’s
top high school bass voices. Nathan and Jordan traveled to Osage Beach, MO at the end of January 2014 to perform with their ensembles at the Missouri Music Educators Association State Convention. Both performances were fantastic.
So where do these talented young men go next? Both are getting ready to apply for the All-National ensembles. We wish them luck as they look to achieve this next prestigious honor.
The accomplishments of these young men may not have been possible without the constant support and encourage-ment of Mr. Matt McKeever, DB’s Director of Music. In his second year on staff, Matt has made an immense impact on the music department and his enthusiasm can be felt school-wide (read his poem on page 9).
1993 and is now the Commander of the 4th Fighter Wing
at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in Goldsboro, North
Carolina. The 2013 Academy class welcomed Mr. Ken Page
’72, an actor known for his work on Broadway in Cats, The
Muny, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Dreamgirls, and
All Dogs Go to Heaven. This year’s inductees welcomed
Mr. Dennis Jenkerson ’76, Chief of the St. Louis City Fire
Department. He is a third generation St. Louis firefighter
with over 30 years of experience.
The Academy of Advanced Studies is an excellent
opportunity for students to challenge themselves in and
out of the classroom. They have travelled to Chicago and
toured the Navy Pier, Willis Tower Sky Deck Observation,
Shed Aquarium, Field Museum of Natural history, and
the Art Institute of Chicago. They have Skyped with Jesuit
Brother Bob Macke ’92 at the Vatican Observatory and
with David Christian, co-founder (along with Bill Gates)
of The Big History Project. This summer the students will
visit Washington, D.C. to see the Library of Congress,
the National Monument, the Smithsonian, and Arlington
National Cemetery. Our Academy students will have an
incredibly strong foundation to build their educational
future on. The DB community is excited to see where life
takes them next.

Tupelo is located in the north-
eastern corner of Mississippi,
an area commonly known
as the Hills Region. The birthplace
of Elvis Presley, Tupelo is a city that
serves as a regional hub, a mere 90
miles from Memphis, TN. Tupelo is
also the location where DB students
volunteer outside of our state’s bor-
der twice a year with the Northeast
Mississippi affiliate of Habitat for
Humanity.
This summer DB will embark on
a fourth trip down south to serve
the less fortunate. Two faculty mem-
bers, Mrs. Jen Duncan ’88, and Mr.
Steve Radomski will accompany up
to 12 students on this adventure. Our
Cavaliers can expect to work hard on
a variety of tasks from framing walls,
shingling a roof, painting, or tiling
while at the Habitat site.
Although basic carpentry skills are
learned on the trip, they are the least of
the wonderful things students acquire
from the experience. They will learn
to give of themselves and exceed their
expectations in skill and strength.
Students meet the future homeowner
and see firsthand the impact their
service. They will learn that serving for
the sake of others is beyond priceless.
The students form a Christian com-
munity as they work, pray, and reflect
on their experience. They will see the
fruits of their labors and they will be
proud of their accomplishments.
Instilling patience and hard work
into this generation of teenagers —
who are accustomed to today’s instant
gratification culture — can be a cum-
bersome task, but the service work
of Habitat opens their eyes to see the
world beyond themselves.
At Bishop DuBourg, this Tupelo
service trip enacts our motto, “Faith in
Christ…Service to Others.” It is a liv-
ing motto, one that is taught through
experience. Some of life’s best lessons
are learned outside the classroom,
especially in Tupelo, Mississippi.

SThe current population of
Bishop DuBourg consists of
students from all over the St.
Louis area — diverse in race, religion,
learning styles, and backgrounds.
Despite their differences, they are
all united under our mission, put-
ting faith and Christ first and fore-
most in our lives. DB is a Catholic
institution where students are given
countless venues to express their faith.
One example is DB’s Pro Life Club,
an extra-curricular outlet that pro-
motes the value of life in its entirety
— affirming life at every stage.
Although abortion is a major con-
cern with Pro Life, there are other fac-
tors as well. As Catholics it is our job
to make sure that people are properly
cared for their entire lives up to their
very last breath. Students are given
the background and skills necessary
to defend their stand for life. The club
is moderated by Ms. Bridget Timoney
and Mrs. Michon Pals.
With over 50 participants, the Pro
Life Club has been very active on cam-
pus this academic year. They have
hosted two blood drives in conjunc-
tion with the American Red Cross.
The group will participate in 40 Days
of Life during Lent with a prayer vigil
at St. Louis City Planned Parenthood.
They will host Grandparents’ and
Senior Citizens’ Day on Wednesday,
April 9. They will conclude the aca-
demic year with a collection for Sweet
Cavaliers Defending Life — Womb to Tomb
Babies at St. Mary’s Hospital in May.
The group works closely with the
DuBourg House. Adjacent to the
DB campus, the DuBourg House is
an assisted living residence run by
Cardinal Ritter Senior Services. The
Pro-Life Club hosted a Halloween
party for the residents. The club
raised funds and granted Christmas
wishes for the residents, delivering
gifts and serving meals at their annual
Christmas party.
Working with the DuBourg House
is a worthy cause. The residents are
thrilled to see the club members and
the students learn to interact with the
elderly, gaining an appreciation for the
value of life at every stage.
Pro Life Club activities reflect their
motto of “respecting life from womb
“A person is a person, no matter how small.”Dr. SeuSS
to tomb” defending the rights of the
unborn to the elderly.
The most public forum the stu-
dents have is the annual March for
Life in Washington, D.C. This year
33 students from the club travelled
by bus to our nation’s capital for the
March. Ms. Timoney and Mrs. Pals
hope the students returned humbled
by the experience and empowered to
speak out against injustice.
Jessica Lambert ’14 reflected on
the trip saying, “I went on the Pro Life
trip to D.C. because I believe in saving
lives not ending them. It’s important
to me that everyone, especially teen-
agers, understand that. That’s what
was cool about the March, thousands
of young people standing up for what
they believe in.”

The Class of 1960 makes a Difference
Standing before the new entrance to the Ray Bayens Alumni Hall are the members of the Class of 1960 who worked on the project (l-r): Jim Konersman, Bob Flynn, Bill Hogan, Clarence Moehl, Former President Kirk Boschert, President Fr. Mike Lydon, Al Hellwig, Bill Brush and Don Hagen. Not pictured is George DeWeese.
The members of the Class of
1960 worked tirelessly to raise
the funds for a new entrance
to the Ray Bayens Alumni Hall. The
transformation is impressive. Their
efforts have made a substantial
improvement to the school’s appear-
ance, but more importantly, they have
demonstrated how a class can make a
difference for DB students.
Alumni of Bishop DuBourg, your
class can do the same! Your leadership

uSThe story of Becky Canino ’14
and Mary Mazzuca’s ’15 expe-
rience of going to State for
tennis is a wonderful example of how
hard work and determination pays off.
Their story shows that raising the bar
only makes one work harder to attain
a goal. In this case the goal was to earn
the first State Banner for Tennis at DB.
Becky’s first State appearance was
Believe in the Banner
in 2012 with her doubles partner Dory
Bohac ’14, along with Laura Engel
’13 in singles. They were the first ten-
nis players in the history of DuBourg
to qualify for the state tournament.
Becky and Dory lost both of their
matches, finishing 16th, and seemed
to be just in “awe” of the experience.
Seeing so many good players in one
setting can be a little intimidating.
After that day, Becky set a goal for her-
self to medal at State. She knew that
the goal was lofty. She had just started
playing tennis as a sophomore.
For the 2013 season Mary Mazzuca
’15 was chosen as Becky’s doubles
partner. Mary is a fierce competi-
tor and had a strong will to work to
actively get better. Mary had only been
playing for one year, and had not yet
had any Varsity experience. So, this
“Have high expectations,
strive for the best. Don’t become
beaten down by your losses.”
BECkY CANINO ’14
Pictured left with Coach Steve Mense and Mary Mazzuca ’15
past summer, Becky and Mary started
playing together. Every doubles drill
in practice, they did together. Every
single regular season match, they
played together. They just kept getting
better and better every single day, to
the point that they finished the sea-
son with a 16-4 record, including a
6-0, 6-0 individual sectional victory to
advance to State, which is a bracket of
only 16 doubles teams.
The state tournament was held in
Springfield, MO at the Cooper Tennis
Complex. In the first round Becky and
Mary treated it like any other match.
They came out fast and won 6-1, 6-4.
After that match, Becky recalled the
sense of excitement coming on, and
their “I think we can do this” attitude
was born. They had a chance.
A win in their second round match
would guarantee a top four finish.
From the first point, the match was
highly competitive. After 2.5 hours of
playing, Becky and Mary won a hard
fought 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 match.
That victory put them in the semi-
finals. The next day they lost to the
team that won the State Tournament.
Both Becky and Mary were great rep-
resentatives of DB. Coach Steve Mense
commented, “They were wonderful
examples for everyone on the team.
Becky and Mary gave every other
player hope that they can accomplish
great things if they work hard enough.”
Becky and Mary had attained their
goal. A State Banner for Tennis now
hangs in the gym.
To Be a CavalierIf someone asks me what it means to be a Cavalier,I’ll tell them first to listen close, to please lend me their ear.For what it means to be a lucky member of this crew,Is something that we cherish more than anything we do.We Cavaliers know what it means to serve our fellow man,To lend help to the sick and poor in any way we can.We welcome those from walks of life that differ from our own,Invite them to our table so they will not sit alone. We strive to do our best in class, to work hard ‘til we’re done,But know that it’s important to make time for having fun!Have faith in Christ and serve each other — that is our greatest goal,To leave this school a better being in heart, mind, and soul.So if someone would ask me, I can be both loud and clear,For I know deep down what it means to be a Cavalier.

DB’s Robotics’ Team has led a trifecta in awards. They were awarded the prestigious Motivate Award for 2012-2013 FTC season, followed by a presentation of the FLL Volunteer of the Year Award for Eastern Missouri, because of the stellar FLL Qualifier they hosted back on October 26–27, 2013.
The team also competed at SLU’s Chaifetz Arena on March 13–15 and took home the St. Louis Regional Engineering Inspiration Award. This award celebrates outstanding success in advancing respect and appreciation for engineering within a team’s school and community.
This win allows the team to advance the FIRST World Championship which takes place on April 24–26 at The Edward Jones Dome/America Center. The DB team will be one of 400 teams competing in this event from all over the world. The event is free and open to the public.

The Bishop DuBourg hall of Fame seeks to honor members of the
DB community that have contributed significantly to the athletic
program. Since the inaugural induction in 2001, 194 individuals and
coaches have been honored. On March 8, 2014 the hall of Fame welcomed
its latest inductees. This year boasted 13 individuals and, for the first time,
an entire team was welcomed to this prestigious group. We honored the 1964
State Championship basketball team on the 50th anniversary of winning
the first State Title in DB history. The night was filled with moving speeches,
camaraderie, and Cavalier pride.

The music was swinging and
the stage was set on January 31
– February 1, 2014. The Alumni
guild Theatre performed for two sold
out audiences. Attendees were guided
on a trip down memory lane for the
Annual Musical Revue, Songs of the Big
Bands. Eighteen alumni performed
in the two act show which included
iconic songs such as Boogie-Woogie
Bugle Boy, Ain’t Misbehavin’, The Joint
Is Jumpin’, the patriot song Get Some
Cash For Your Trash, and the sultry
standard Stormy Weather.
Music for the evening was arranged
and directed by greg Schweizer ’73.
The band included five current DB
Jazz Band students, and Band Director
Mr. Matt McKeever on bass guitar.
Current guild Director, Jim Leibrecht
directed the staging, while three
alumni, Denise (O’Connell) Turner
’87, Kathy (Quinn) piercy ’76, and
Eileen Engel ’08 choreographed the
dance numbers.
The infamous Bishop DuBourg
Swing Dancers, directed by Mr. Don
Burrus performed as well. participants
included alumni and current dancers.
Additionally, current student guild
members offered their talents to the
production by working in the light and

gonna set my heart at ease”– Music by Les Brown and Ben Homer, lyrics by Bud Green
sound booth, serving refreshments,
and ushering attendees to their seats.
This exciting show was a true col-
laboration of the past and present.
“It was a special show because of the
very talented alums. This was the first
time alums from the Swing Dancers
were part of the performance. This
show brought alums on stage from
every decade since the guild began in
1972. The chemistry of the performers
was perfection. This was definitely the
most enjoyable of the six revues the
Alumni guild Theatre has done” said
Mr. Leibrecht. Funds raised from the
production will be directed towards the
flooring and lighting updates needed
in the Theatre. The guild thanks all
who attended, volunteered, or donated
to make the Revue so successful.

DB VeterAns memoriAl Project
Commemorating DB Heroes
Bishop DuBourg honored our DB heroes in a
special way. Gary Myerscough ’64 envisioned
a Veteran’s Memorial to commemorate our
alumni who served honorably in the Army, Navy, Marine
Corps, Air Force, or Coast Guard. Gary’s idea was aided
by the efforts of JoAnn (DeCarlo) Eckrich ’64 and the
artistic talents of Christian Brother William Woeger ’63,
F.S.C. The three worked tirelessly to collect the names of
DB veterans, living and deceased, in conjunction with
former DB President Kirk Boschert (pictured at right)
who enthusiastically supported the project.
Their vision became a reality last summer with the
installation of Phase I of the project. Dedicated in
memory of Mark Howard ’65, James Lipper ’64, and Jerry
Aubuchon ’64, the memorial hosts 16 panels honoring
269 DB veterans whose class years spans generations.
The wall was dedicated and blessed on Veteran’s Day,
November 11, 2013. Those honored on the wall and
their families were invited to
a prayer service with the stu-
dent body. DB Eagle Scout
members presented the
Color Guard. The Veterans of
Foreign Wars Legion Post 15
processed in adding dignity
and to the event.
After prayer the crowd was
led to the memorial where Fr. Mike Lydon blessed the
wall and all whose names are on it. Gary Myerscough
’64 gave a passionate speech about what the memorial
means to him (photo top left). The veterans were then
welcomed to fellowship and a continental breakfast.
Angela Calloni ’98 Director of Advancement Operations
commented, “We are so proud of the rich history of
Bishop DuBourg alumni serving our country. This
memorial serves as a constant reminder of their sacri-
fice and bravery for our current students and for future
generations of Cavaliers.”
Phase I cost $11,000 and was funded solely by the
generosity of DB alums, family members and friends.
Phase II is underway. The Advancement Office is
continuing to accept names to be added to the wall (see
form at the top of page 19). This is a “living” project that
will grow as information on our DB veterans is received.
To contribute to the Memorial Project please com-
plete the bottom form at right and send it along with
your tax-deductible payment. Your generosity is greatly
appreciated.

Have you considered establishing
a charitable gift annuity as a
way to make a gift to Bishop DuBourg
High School and still receive a ben-
efit for yourself and/or your spouse
for the remainder of your lives?
Interest rates on CDs and other fixed
income investments have declined
over recent years. Individuals are in
search of ways to maintain cash flow,
seek the security of guaranteed pay-
ments and save on taxes.
Charitable gift annuities are offered
in four different types:
Single-Life Annuity – an annuity
payment to only one person for his or
her lifetime.
Spousal Joint-Life Annuity – an
annuity payment to married couples
(Upon death of the first annuitant,
the remaining spouse is paid the full
annuity payment during his or her
lifetime).
Two-Life Annuity – an annuity pay-
ment to one person and then transfers
to the second person upon the death
of the first person.
Deferred Gift Annuity – an annu-
ity payment that can be deferred to a
future date. (Date must be at least one
year after the original contribution).
With a charitable gift annuity you
can choose to receive your payments
quarterly, semi-annually or annually.
enjoy a Guaranteed Payment for life!
We are grateful for all members of the Bishop DuBourg Family who have remembered Bishop DuBourg High School through their Estate Planning. We’d like to acknowledge and thank those who have made the ultimate gift to Bishop DuBourg.

Survival of the Fittest?“Survival of the fittest” goes to describe
That only those on top are bound to survive
I hate that phrase, ‘cause we each hold
What it takes to move forward, strong and bold
Bishop DuBourg is a faith-based place
A nice variety — gender and race
Coming together to learn and strive
Wanting to make it; wanting to thrive
The chains connecting each person here
Are bound when we put our hearts in gear
Today I saw a deed of acceptance
The value “equality” took an entrance
Practicing compassion, trying to find
Our place in the world, peace in our minds
Free from everything that ties us down
DB helps establish that ground
Showing us morals, right from wrong
We do listen even when the day’s too long
God’s greater plan is engraved in us
As we seek to find it, we have to trust
That this Catholic school will help us find
Our fulfilling purpose that’s following behind.
