SOLLERS POINT TECHNICAL
June 2016
Message from the Principal
Dear Parents, Guardians, and Students:
The Year in Review
As the 2015 – 2016 academic calendar winds to an end, I would like to
take this opportunity to thank our students, parents, faculty, and staff for a
very productive and rewarding year. Sollers Point established two building
-wide targets in September for industry certifications and CTE program
completion rate. I am excited to announce that we have achieved
444 industry certifications through May and will continue to add additional
student certifications to our building total as we receive results from the
Maryland Board of Nursing, Maryland Restaurant Association, and other
outside organizations. Our CTE magnet program completion rate dropped
to 85% this year down from 89.5% in 2014-15. Programs that had the
highest withdrawal rate this year were Engineering Technician and
Computer Science. Programs that had the highest retention rate were the
Academy of Health Professions and Construction Management.
Our primary goal continues to be the delivery of challenging and rigorous
technical and academic courses that motivate students to reach their ca-
reer goals.
Our Academy of Health Professions program continues to grow under the
leadership of Ms. Hart, Ms. Dawn Shuster, and Ms. Nehal Ghodasara.
Sollers Point continued to offer a combination of pharmacy tech, CNA, and
A&P classes this year as part of the Level II experience. 32 seniors
achieved CNA certification in August 2015 following a one week internship
at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center (JHBMC). 40 11th grade
students achieved CPR certification in April. We expect to send 35 rising
seniors to JHBMC the last two weeks of June to complete clinical rotations
in preparation for state licensure.
Under the direction of Mr. Rowlands, 14 automotive students passed the
Electrical assessment. 6 students passed the Brakes assessment.
7 students passed the Engine Performance assessment and 8 students
passed the Steering and Suspension assessment.
Our Baking & Pastry program under the direction of Chef Cassano
continued to expand this year. 21 Baking and Pastry students passed
their ServSafe certification exams offered through the National Education
Foundation of the National Restaurant Association.
Our Biomedical Sciences program expanded to include a second
instructor (Mr. Choi) this year. Mr. D ’Antonio’s second year students
studied Human Body Systems. Students examined the interactions of the
human body as they explore identity, power, movement, protection and
homeostasis. Exploring science in action, students built organs and
tissues on skeletal models and use data acquisition software to monitor
human body functions. Mr. Choi’s 1st year students were introduced to the
“Principles of Biomedical Science” course in order to explore concepts in
biology and medicine to determine factors that led to the death of a
fictional person.
In the construction management program, 11 students passed NCCER
Core certification, First Aid certification, and CPR exams under the
direction of Mr. Lynch. 8 students achieved International Residential Code
(IRC) certification. 8 students are on target to achieve OSHA 10
certification before the end of the year
(Principal’s Message Con’t)
Students in our Level I computer science magnet program moved from
their data encryption projects to student-selected final project. Some Level
I students have already begun using Java for writing their programs.
Others continue to use 'C' in solving some complex problems including
subString search, and evaluating "normality" of a random variable
distribution.
Level II computer science students took the AP Computer Science A exam
in early May. Now, these students have begun work on their end of year
projects. These projects include Space Invaders, databases with Microsoft
Access, Tank Battlefield, a chat-bot, and two different polynomial problem
solvers. Every Level II student in our magnet program took the Computer
Science “A” exam through the College Board. We can’t wait to see the
results!
Cosmetology under the direction of Ms. Mardaga and Ms. Wyatt continues
to be one of the best programs in the county as 14 students have passed
both the theory and practical exams required to become licensed
cosmetologists in Maryland. 5 additional seniors have passed 1 of 2
exams required for certification.
Our Culinary Arts program under the direction of Chef Smith continued to
expand services this year as we catered 7 events in the building and
culinary café for outside groups while also opening the café to faculty and
staff on Fridays. 26 students passed their ServSafe certification exam.
Our ProStart culinary team won the state competition in April and
participated in the national championships in Dallas, Texas during the
beginning of May. While our team did not place in the top 5 in the country,
the experience and feedback we received from the judges will be
invaluable going forward. Kudos to Chef Smith and his students!
Under the direction of Mr. Lupini, 120 industry certifications were achieved
by students this year including certifications in brakes, electrical, medium
and heavy truck engine performance, diesel engines, pollution prevention,
mechanical safety, and interviewing skills.
4 students in our Cisco Networking Academy Program completed the
course requirements for the Comp TIA A+ Computer Repair certifications.
Congratulations to Mr. Motto for preparing our students for the exam.
9 students in our Engineering Tech program completed the Career Safe 10
hour OSHA General Industry Safety exam. Congratulations to Mr. Olson
for preparing our students for the exam.
We hope that 2015-16 has been a positive and rewarding experience for
everyone associated with Sollers Point. Sollers Point Tech has been
preparing students for college or careers for the last 50 years. Take some
time this summer to read a book, renew friendships, and reflect on your
accomplishments and achievements. Thank you for your commitment to
Sollers Point Technical High. We hope to see many of you in August.
Go Stallions,
Michael Weglein, Principal
Sollers Point 2016 Senior Recognition
and Awards Ceremony
On May 26, we celebrated our 2016 graduates at a Senior Recognition
and Awards Ceremony. Family and friends joined the Sollers Point staff,
representatives from our partner schools, BCPS Offices, and business
partners to honor our seniors. Each participant received a Certificate of
Program Completion and a Sollers Point Tech medallion. Several stu-
dents were earned awards and scholarships thanks to the generous sup-
port of local donors. Scholarship applications were mailed to all qualifying
students (those enrolled in a senior program.) and we are happy to an-
nounce that 24 students received awards totaling $11,400. We are proud
that the faculty and administration accounted for $2,250 of those scholar-
ships. Most importantly, we are very grateful to the community business-
es and local organizations who annually donate to the SPT Scholarship
Fund. As you read the list below, please make special note of these do-
nors and take every opportunity to express our appreciation for supporting
the students of our school. (We would love to provide even more opportu-
nities for our students; please phone the school at 410.887.7075 if you
have recommendations for future donors!) Lastly, we would like to thank
senior Alex Farrier for representing the Class if 2016 with a memorable
“student perspective.’

If your child has been taking medication in school this year
please be advised:
Students may not take unused or expired medications home. A parent or designated adult must retrieve the medication from school or it will be discarded. Medication should be picked up by the last day of school. If you are unable to pick up medication by the last day of school and want to make alternate arrangements, please contact the school nurse at 410-887-7074.
If it is necessary for your child to continue taking medication during the coming school year, an order form has been sent to your home via US mail. Please have this form completed by your child’s health care provider and have them post marked after June 30
th for the up-
coming school year. Also please remember to sign the form and have your child’s health care provider sign the form as well. You may return the form to your school’s nurse at the beginning of next school year.
If you have a child that needs to take medication in the future and would like the medication given in school contact your school nurse to make arrangements.
Have a safe and fun summer!
