Dear Parents,

Welcome back to school and to the first Newsletter of Term One! I hope that you and your family all enjoyed a refreshing summer break and are still feeling the benefits of this time where we get an opportunity, hopefully, to slow down and engage in holiday pursuits.

Centenary Year 2018 2018 is, as you may well already know, a very special year in our school calendar as it commemorates our School Centenary. A number of celebra-tions are being planned to mark this momentous occasion. Over the coming weeks and months you will see regular updates here about the details and timing of these events. A key period through the year will be a week of celebrations commencing on June 18 and culminating in a School Mass celebrated by our Archbishop, His Grace, Denis Hart, on Sat-urday June 23, at 6:30pm. This will be followed by a light supper and com-munity gathering in the Hall. We encourage you to put this date in your dia-ry now as one of your ‘must keep’ dates. We are keen to have involvement from all sections of our community in cel-ebrating St Mary’s School Centenary. I encourage you to take advantage of an opportunity to participate in some of the planning for these celebrations by responding to the Expression of Interest on page 7.

Principal’s Beginning of Year Tips

This second week is often the week that everyone generally feels the reali-ty of being back at school. To help with this, I encourage you to remember the importance of ‘routine’, including your own routines and those of the school. When practised well, routines help to make our learning environ-ments function in an optimum way. On the following page are some annual recommendations I make as we begin a new school year and I encourage you to consider how these might support your family and our school in cre-ating such environments.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL CONTINUED

Routines

1. Punctuality Making sure that your child is at school between 8:25 and 8:40 ensures that they have

time to get organised and settled for the day. Teachers collect the children from the Top Oval next to

the School Office at 8:45 and are on the playground at 8:40 to meet and greet all children and fami-

lies. The most important teacher modelling takes place at the start of the day and it is crucial for your

child’s learning and their well-being that they are at the line on time so that this can occur. Students

can find it stressful if they have arrived late and are unsure what to do. Arriving on time ensures chil-

dren are ready to start with their class and minimises disruption to learning that can have a negative

impact on all student learning. You may find the attached article by Michael Grose helpful (page 8).

2. Belongings Making sure that the children take responsibility for their belongings is also im-

portant. Please check to ensure that your child’s name is on all items of their uniform, their lunch box,

drink bottle and other necessary items brought from home. We strongly discourage children from

bringing personal belongings to school other than a specified item requested by their teacher. Items

brought to school for this purpose should be given to the teacher at the start of the day and collected

prior to going home. The school takes no responsibility for damage or loss to the personal belongings

of students.

3. Nightly Reading Setting a consistent approach to completing ‘out of school learning’ in an

environment that is conducive, is also essential. Taking time to discuss your child’s work and learning

with them on a daily basis will help to build your child’s confidence and gives you some powerful in-

sights into the children’s learning journey. We cannot emphasise enough the importance of reading

as an integral element of all children’s Home Learning (Foundation to Year 6). While children in the

Junior part of the school are generally ‘learning to read’, those students further advanced should be

‘reading to learn’. Teachers will make recommendations to you about ways in which you can engage

and support your child in this area. As a suggestion, you may wish to initiate a positive conversation

such as “Tell me something you discovered today”. Positive conversations focussing on a ‘growth

mindset’, building resilience and helping your child problem solve issues, can be of significant benefit.

4. Chris Daicos Evening To help support the above aspect of our children’s learning we are

delighted to welcome back to St Mary’s, Ms Christine Daicos, who will facilitate a workshop titled

‘Growth Mindsets and Resilience’ on Tuesday 6 March, at 7pm. All parents are encouraged

to save this date! If you’ve previously heard Chris speak, then she needs no introduction! If you only

know Chris by reputation or not at all, I encourage you to read the sample of some feedback we re-

ceived after the last presentation Chris facilitated in 2016 (page 5).

5. Student Actions Over the last week we have been encouraging students to accept responsibility

for doing three simple tasks to support their learning journey. Regularly reminding the children of

these messages at home helps to reinforce their importance. It is also a great example of school

and home working together and it is a very powerful lever in helping to deliver improved student out-

comes. These messages are:

Listen (Attentively)

Be ( the best version of yourself)

Challenge (and persist!)

Committing to these recommendations and following them through at all times will set your child up for a

successful and enjoyable year at school and at home, and I thank you in anticipation of your support.

PENDING EVENTS & 2018

As we begin a new year I encourage you to consider the following pending events scheduled to take place over the next couple of weeks. To mark the beginning of Lent and support your children and family during this liturgical season, we invite you to attend our Ash Wednesday Mass NEXT Wednesday, 14 February at 12pm. Please note that our Assemblies will continue on Friday afternoons at 2:45pm for Terms 1, 3 and 4, in 2018, however during Term 2 our weekly assembly will be held on Monday afternoons at 2:45 due to the

frequency of sporting commitments. In order to keep informed about dates and events, I encourage you to regularly check the school calendar on our website. Wishing you a wonderful week and centenary year. Shane Tobin

Our Commitment to Child Safety

STUDENT WELLBEING UPDATE

SWELL WEEK: Our new school year began last week with our annual SWELL Week, an opportunity for students and staff to begin building positive relationships and settle into the new school year. There was definitely lots of enthusiasm and excitement around our classrooms and corridors last week, with all students and staff contributing to a memorable SWELL Week. On Monday, all students met their new Buddy for a picnic lunch. Tuesday involved Growth Mindsets being explored and discussed in all classrooms, with lots of creative displays be-ginning to take shape. SWELL Week concluded with a fun play-based incursion which re-quired students to work cooperatively to construct a variety of towers, shapes and objects using wooden planks. The hall certainly proved to be a noisy place with multiple towers of planks falling all at the same time! STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL (SRC): The St Mary’s Student Representative Council (SRC) is a positive and proactive group, that represents all students and promotes their views and participation in school decision making. The purpose of SRC at St Mary’s is to:

Make our school a better place

Communicate and discuss school decisions that directly affect students

Take on a leadership role within the school community

Support our community (fundraise for important issues)

Help and support other students Last week all students in Foundation to Year Five were invited to consider applying for a position as their class SRC representative. All applications were due back to class-room teachers yesterday. Over the next few days two students from each classroom will be democratically elected as their new SRC representative. Our Year Six SRC/Social Justice Leaders, as well as our new SRCs will be presented with their badges to the school community at our assembly on Friday 23 February, beginning at 2:45pm. PEER COUNSELLORS: Peer Counsellors are a group of senior students who volunteer their time to help promote a safe and happy environment at our school. During a series of workshops throughout Term 1, Peer Counsellors will learn how to have a restorative conversation to help solve social problems on the yard and in the classroom. After these workshops, our Peer Counsellors will be rostered on for yard duties throughout the year to support peers needing strategies and advice. They will be clearly visible due to the lovely fluro or-ange vests they wear! Once Peer Counsellors begin, we would encourage all students to seek their sup-port when on the yard, before seeing a teacher. Yesterday, all students in Year Four, Five and Six were invited to apply for a position as a Peer Counsellor. Their applications are due no later than 5:00pm Mon-day 19 February.

Wow what an amazing talk about Resilience by Chris. Funny, witty, engaging, and most importantly so helpful to me as a

parent. I didn't know what to expect and dragged myself there out of a sense of obligation. Thank goodness I did. Everything

she said made such sense and was so practical. I can't wait to put some of her ideas into action. One of the best talks I've

been to at the school. Thanks for organising. Sarah Flanigan

Christine Daicos is an outstanding, enthusiastic and humorous presenter who left me with a sense of empowerment. I en-

joyed how she drew on life stories and experiences to illustrate points in the most entertaining manner. Her session provided

us with simple, practical, logical ideas to help our children develop their resilience and cope with the 21st century challenges.

Christine, I loved your anecdotes and your dynamic personality. Penelope Kalogeropoulos

I just wanted to say a big thank you to the school for organising the talk on Tuesday night. It was a really great session, I

found it very practical and informative, with lots of great tips and information, all brought to life wonderfully by Chris' exam-

ples and stories. Thanks Aoife Deane

Tuesday evening with Christine Daicos was Brilliant! How do I get my hands on those slides? Thanks for organising Annie

Storey

I just wanted to feedback to the school how informative, interesting and entertaining this session was. Chris was thoroughly

engaging and the information so relevant and valuable. Many thanks to the school for organising the session. Jane Evans

The session was excellent and certainly something I would encourage others to attend if they get the chance. I picked up

some good practical tips, and laughed a lot - Chris is an excellent presenter. I took away some key points on allowing chil-

dren the space and freedom to do things for themselves - be that problem solving or trying and failing, and particularly

setting realistic expectations as to how they can contribute at home! Katri Goldsworthy

Don't do anything for your kids they can do themselves and it is ok for our kids to be bored sometimes. Simon Wilson

Christine's presentation about building resilience in children was informative, entertaining and delivered with practical and

relevant examples. With life seemingly busier than ever it's important to take time out to be reminded and become more

informed about how to help our children adapt and deal with challenges presented in today's ever changing world. Thanks

for running the session. Louise Pooley

Attending the 'Building resilience' workshop with Christine Daicos was outstanding! REALLY outstanding! Despite being filthy

I didn’t win the lucky door prize, if the workshop was offered again tomorrow - I would definitely attend … yes, again! So

much great material to take in. Was a relief to hear we are getting things (mainly) right but more positive to be given some

tools to use in those more challenging situations. Plenty of common sense 'stuff’ that has drifted from being common place

around Chez Cunningham and from all the nodding and awkward laughing during Christine’s presentation, me thinks we are

not alone. Was great to see all the teaching staff there and to have it reinforced that parents and teachers can double team

on cranking up the resilience in our kids. Pat Cunningham

Thankyou Chris for such an insightful and engaging presentation! You highlighted the importance of our children developing

resilience, self-esteem and problem solving abilities and our role in facilitating their growth in becoming successful

adults. Catherine Stansfield-Smith

ST MARY’S CENTENARY

St Mary’s Centenary Events Committee: Welcome back to another exciting year at St Mary’s. This year we are commemorating our school centenary which is a huge achievement and de-serves to be celebrated throughout our community. We are establishing a centenary committee that includes members of our parent body, parish, alumni and teachers. If you are interested in sharing ideas, lending expertise or helping in any way we would love to have you on board. We are also seeking St Mary’s memorabilia (photographs, uniforms, mass or liturgy booklets, cer-tificates, report cards etc) from across the years to be displayed and digitally recorded for preser-vation. Ms. Caroline Laker is our Centenary and Community Engagement Leader this year and will be heading up the organisation of the celebrations. Please email her your expression of interest at [email protected] Any input, help and support would be greatly appreciated.

Weekly Recap

Let's recap week 1 Term 1

School has returned and we are back into the swing of things at after school care. Everyone was still buzzing with excitement from the holidays and I loved hearing all about everyone’s adventures. It’s been great to see how much everyone has grown over the holidays and to wel-come a few new faces! We kicked off the term with a fantastic party in the art room. We celebrated with bubbles, balloons and lots of music! It was so lovely to hear about everyone’s adven-tures over the holidays and the enthusiasm with which everyone settled into their new classes. Thursday we welcomed back more of our group as we chatted and caught up. Our activity for the afternoon saw us experiment with colour and shape as we made some very funky rain drop art. Friday we had a great time dancing, singing and design-ing some very cool animal costumes. We also enjoyed lots of downball and fun imaginative games playing teach-ers and zoos. I just wanted to say how lovely it is to have everyone back in such great spirits and how great it is to see so many children welcome and help the new students without hesi-tation! I look forward to seeing everyone next week.
