MMeessssaaggee iinn tthhee MMuussiicc 66 First Baptist Student Ministry - Wednesday, August 6, 2016

Tonight, we conclude our summer message series and prepare our hearts for

what God has in store for this new school year, as we get to know this new and fun band 7eventh Time Down with their latest hit single, “God Is On The Move”.

I. A Band On The Move a. Getting To Know 7eventh Time Down

i. Band from Mount Vernon, KY (pic on screen) ii. Members: Mikey Howard, Eric Vanzant, Cliff Williams,

and Austin Mille iii. Active since 2004, debut album in 2011 iv. Hit songs like: Just Say Jesus, The One I’m Running

To, God Is On The Move, & Promises v. Latest album = God Is On The Move (August 2015) vi. Supports CURE International (assists disabled kids)

b. Getting To Know Why They Exist i. Have you ever thought about why the bands you

listen to exist? Is it just to entertain you? Just to get your money (concerts, downloads, merch)? Or, for something more?

ii. 7eventh Time Down = exists to reach people for Jesus, especially students! Their lyrics are real and their hearts are for you. What’s some of the stuff you struggle with right now? Many of you have told me, it’s how you use the internet. They care about that too. Listen to them talk about it during an interview with Remedy Live…

Video = “7eventh Time Down ‘Internet Dangers’” (2:32) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I6lifxAPfpk

iii. This is why Christian music is so powerful… not

about just sounding good, but life-changing lyrics iv. Music makes us move (dance), but more than that,

God is on the move! 1. Not moves like Jagger, I want you to have…

(Whistle & sing), “moves like Jesus”!

II. A God On The Move a. What He Is Calling You To

i. I hope you know God is not a stationary God, who waits for you to show up to church to worship Him (He’s not here when we aren’t) or who waits in your bedroom for you to kneel down and prayer (He goes with you to school and everywhere else).

ii. He is active, working, always on the move iii. So… are you going to join Him? He’s calling you iv. College radio interview: What’s God calling you to…

Video = “7eventh Time Down LIVE at WGTS 91.9” (2:22)

b. How God Is On The Move (based on these lyrics) i. He’s transporting people from darkness to light

1. Matthew 5:14-16 = “You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. 15 No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.” (NLT)

ii. He’s helping people face temptation & stand to fight 1. 1 Corinthians 10:13 = “The temptations in

your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure.” (NLT)

iii. He teaching people to serve and not be served 1. Mark 10:45 = “For even the Son of Man did

not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (NIV)

iv. He’s strengthening people with weaknesses that bring them to our knees

1. Eph. 3:14 = “When I think of all this, I fall to my knees and pray to the Father.” (NLT)

2. You need a Paul prayer life (fall to your knees and pray), not a Justin prayer life (fall to your knees and cry or ask ‘why’)

v. He’s revealing truth to people to set them free 1. John 8:34-36 = “Jesus replied, “I tell you

the truth, everyone who sins is a slave of sin. 35 A slave is not a permanent member of the family, but a son is part of the family forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you are truly free.” (NLT)

a. Handcuffs = fake this time! vi. He’s guiding people to stand upon His Word

1. 2 Thessalonians 2:15 = “So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold fast to the teachings we passed on to you, whether by word of mouth or by letter.” (NIV)

2. Sitting on your Bible? Standing on it! vii. He’s calling a generation to stand on the truth

1. 1 Peter 2:9 (Summer Camp passage) = “for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.” (NLT)

viii. He’s reaching out to the searching souls 1. Matthew 7:8 = “For everyone who asks,

receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened.” (NLT)

2. This is how Jesus works… just come, but we need to tell those searching where to come (new school year, new mission field!)

ix. He’s waiting for us to reply “Send me, here I go” 1. Isaiah 6:8 = “Then I heard the Lord asking,

“Whom should I send as a messenger to this people? Who will go for us?” I said, “Here I am. Send me.”” (NLT)

2. He is on the move! Will you join Him?

Imagine this scene: You are on the Florida coast. The sun is setting like a gigantic orange ball. It’s the cool evening on a vacant, isolated stretch of beach. The water is lapping at the shore, the breeze is blowing slightly. There are one or two joggers and a couple of fishermen. Most people have gone home for the day. You look up and you see an old man with curved shoulders, bushy eyebrows, and bony features hobbling down the beach carrying a bucket. He carries the bucket up to the pier, a dock that goes out into the water. He stands on the dock and you notice he is looking up into the sky and all of a sudden you see a mass of dancing dots. You soon recognize that they are seagulls. They are coming out of nowhere. The man takes out of his bucket handfuls of shrimp and begins to throw them on the dock. The seagulls come and land all around him. Some land on his shoulders, some land on his hat, and they eat the shrimp. Long after the shrimp are gone his feathered friends linger. The old man and the birds.

What is going on here? Why is this man feeding seagulls? What could compel him to do this—as he does week after week?

The man in that scene was Eddie Rickenbacher, a famous World War II pilot. His plane, The Flying Fortress, went down in 1942 and no one thought he would be rescued. Perhaps you have read or heard how he and his eight passengers escaped death by climbing into two rafts for thirty days. They fought thirst, the sun, and sharks. Some of the sharks were nine feet long. The boats were only eight feet long. But what nearly killed them was starvation. Their rations were gone within eight days and they didn’t have anything left.

Rickenbacher wrote that even on those rafts, every day they would have a daily afternoon devotional and prayer time. One day after the devotional, Rickenbacher leaned back and put his hat over his eyes and tried to get some sleep. Within a few moments he felt something on his head. He knew in an instant that it was a seagull that had perched on his raft. But he knew that they were hundreds of miles out to sea. Where did this seagull come from? He was also certain that if he didn’t get that seagull he would die. Soon all the others on the two boats noticed the seagull. No one spoke, no one moved. Rickenbacher quickly grabbed the seagull and with thanksgiving, they ate the flesh of the bird. They used the intestines for fish bait and survived.

Rickenbacher never forgot that visitor who came from a foreign place. That sacrificial guest. Every week, he went out on the pier with a bucket of shrimp and said thank you, thank you, thank you.

The apostle Paul wrote, “For Christ’s love compels us…” (2 Corinthians 5:14). The word “compels” means literally, “leaves me no choice.” Paul is saying, “I have no choice but to respond to the love of Christ with my whole being—to say thank you, thank you, thank you!” When we serve Christ, when we share God’s love with others, when we come to church each week to worship him, we don’t do it begrudgingly. We do it with thankful hearts because we really have no choice. It’s how we say thank you! (Hot Illustrations 1.0, The Seagull)

Here’s someone just like you, a former teenager, who just wants to be used by God. Meet Colton Dixon and the message behind one of his greatest songs ever

called “Through All Of It”…

I. The Man Known As Colton Dixon a. From Average Teenager…

i. Michael Colton Dixon ii. Born in 1991 (age 24) in Murfreesboro, TN iii. Sang in the choir in high school iv. Was an extra in Hannah Montana: The Movie (08) v. Began singing in 2010 at churches (age 19) vi. In 2012, Dixon started dating Annie Coggeshall. They

got engaged in September 2015, and wed on January 8, 2016.

b. …To American Idol… i. Auditioned for season 10 with his sister = no go ii. Season 11 auditions, came to support his sister and

they begged him to perform iii. Finished in 7th place iv. His elimination on April 19, 2012 was considered a

big surprise because he had never been in the bottom three. After the show, judge Steven Tyler said that he was "beyond shocked" at Dixon's elimination.

v. Post-Idol… hear a little more from Colton:

Video = Getting To Know Colton Dixon – Part 1 (2:51) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=reJTu3M_XbM

c. …To Messenger Of God i. He is a messenger who just wants to get his

message (God’s music) out there! ii. What has he learned most recently? Learned

patience… God will get you through anything! iii. Which really is the theme for this song / night iv. His music = 3 albums, songs like: “You Are”, “Love

Has Come For Me”, “More Of You”, “Through All Of It”, and “Limitless”

v. This is too good not to share… the rest of the interview, getting to know him:

Video = Getting To Know Colton Dixon – Part 2 (3:17) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSDJ1DVpM44

vi. Don’t you just love this guy? Love his heart? vii. Listen to his life verse again…

1. John 13:16 = “Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.” (NIV)

viii. That should remind you that God wants to use your life, no matter who you are and what you’ve done!

II. The Struggles Known As Life

a. We All Struggle! i. That’s a fact… we all face hard times in life ii. Struggles = “fight, brawl, scuffle” iii. We even get to places where we ask questions like:

“Am I really going to make it out of this alive?” or “Where is God when I need Him most?” or “Why is this happening to me now?”

b. But Why Do We Struggle? i. Some think it’s just chance… random ii. Some think it’s God punishing us for something iii. Some think God really isn’t in control of everything iv. I don’t know why you struggled or are struggling, but

I know it is no accident, and God is not too distant.

III. The God Known As Ever-Present a. He Goes Before You

i. There is no struggle you will go through that God has not already been through before you:

Deuteronomy 31:6 = ”So be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid and do not panic before them. For the Lord your God will personally go ahead of you.

He will neither fail you nor abandon you.” (NLT)

b. He Remains With You i. …Through it all! (Listen to these lyrics): ii. “Tough days… Tears and troubled times… Have won,

lost, journey, joy & regret… Unclear moments… the One keeping me strong… You have been my God through all of it!... This is who you are… constant… Look back and see you… still do & always going to

iii. Joshua 1:9 = “This is my command—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go” (NLT)

iv. Listen to this story I heard on the Wally Show on WayFM not too long ago (pic on screen)

Audio Clip = Colton Dixon Story – WayFM 2016 (3:28)

v. When you know God remains with you no matter

what, there is peace… through it all vi. “But You have been my God through all of it”

c. He Wants To Use You i. Like the man in the radio story: Never heard about

God like this before… how many people do you know who may think like that?

ii. How is God using you in their lives? Wants to? iii. Matthew 28:20 = “…teaching them to obey

everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always…” (NIV)

d. He Is There Through All Of It i. Listen closely to the powerful words of this song

“Through All Of It” and the powerful stories interlaced within this music video.

ii. You will hear true testimonies like: 1. Had to give it to God 2. God is with me 3. Couldn’t have got through this just by

myself 4. He rebuild me 5. He shielded me

Music Video = “Colton Dixon – Through All Of It” (6:13)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G0Dzh3RZn0E

Classic passage, so powerful… Philippians 4:13 = “For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.” (NLT)

Closing story = trying to get pregnant for years, today is Ethan’s 5th birthday!

If you haven’t caught it yet, it seems as if God is setting a theme this summer as we get to know these artists and these songs through our Message In The Music series. That theme is obviously that God loves to redeem us from our

difficulties and always walks with us through our valleys. As is the case with the story behind this young lady’s life, latest album, and tonight’s featured song:

I. Meet The Artist Known As Plumb

a. Who Is She? i. Tiffany Arbuckle Lee ii. Born in Indianapolis, IN in March 1975 (age 41) iii. Originally signed as a Christian Contemporary Music

(CCM) recording artist in 1997 iv. Married and has four children with her husband (pic)

b. What Is Her Passion? i. Making music, obviously! ii. Her music = 7 albums (1997-2015) iii. Started as a background singer for a number of

artists, including Bill Gaither and Amy Grant iv. When she was urged to write, Plumb turned to Matt

Bronlewee—an original member of Jars of Clay who happened to be her next-door neighbor—and the two hit it off

v. But, for her, its more than just writing a song, listen to her describe the title track of your newest album:

Video = Plumb – Making Of Exhale #2 Exhale (1:25) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ffCQe9XntMw

vi. Exhale = newest album (released May 2015) vii. Idea = “We don’t exist for us… breathe God’s love in

and it changes us, we breathe that out to love and serve others… exhale.”

viii. Plumb said in a bio once “Fame and fortune are fleeting, but making a difference in someone’s life lasts for an eternity.” (So, she writes “love letters”!)

II. Meet The Struggle That Changed Her Life

a. Crash And Burn i. Tiffany (Plumb) hit an extremely difficult patch in her

marriage and family a few years back… what the Enemy meant for evil, God used for good.

ii. "Evil kind of just took over and some pretty awful things happened and split us up. We were headed for divorce," she recalled. With the help of a licensed Christian marriage and family therapist and strong faith, the couple was able to save their marriage and now they are stronger than ever. "God did a miracle in our marriage and brought us back to each other, but before He did that He made us better as individuals ... I feel like now we're sort of a force to be reckoned with against evil," she said. "Because I'm such a fan of what God did, I said on Winter jam [that] "Need You Now" [is] about how my husband and I split up and we were headed for divorce and God took his gloves off and told Satan where he could stick it. He fought for me, but I learned that you have to give God that permission." (http://www.christianpost.com/news/plumb-says-evil-caused-marriage-separation-singer-talks-importance-of-faith-keeping-romance-alive-127027/#GrUgJmGx3KvV58dg.99)

iii. When everything around you feels like you’re going to crash and burn… God can redeem you!

Video = “BC News Plumb ‘Smoke’ (start at 0:08, end at 0:56) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QmZkkFCxnXk

iv. He can breathe life back into death (your dead

spiritual life, your dead relationships, your deadly addictions or habits, your dead thoughts).

b. Shut Up And Listen i. Would God ever tell you to “shut up”? Not in the way

we use the phrase these days…

James 1:19 = ”Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry.” (NLT)

ii. But, He always has something to say about our

situations, if we will just stop long enough to listen. iii. So… what about you? Struggling? Need God to

redeem you or your situation? He will!

III. Meet The God Who Can Redeem You a. The Meaning Of Redemption

i. Redeem = “exchange, transfer, buy back” ii. You have been redeemed, the ultimate redemption

Isaiah 43:1-2 = “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you

by name; you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you.” (NLT)

iii. Hold up floaties = Elijah used to be afraid of the

water, but isn’t now, still can’t swim, jumped in a pool 2 weeks ago, if I wasn’t there he would have drowned… I redeemed him, pulled him out… he trusted his daddy would be there.

b. Her Lyrics And His Lyrics i. Listen to the lyrics of this song “Smoke” and how

they so accurately reflect God’s lyrics (His Word): ii. “Though I walk through the valley…”

1. Psalm 23:4 = “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me.” (NIV)

iii. “Slow to speak… I hear His voice” 1. James 1:19

iv. “You say ‘Come to me’… heavy / weary = rest” 1. Matthew 11:28 = ‘Then Jesus said, “Come

to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.” (NLT)

v. “You are my… hope, song, oxygen inside these weary lungs, safe place, home, shelter when it all goes up in smoke”

vi. “Danced with the devil & all of his friends” vii. “Humbled by your love for me”

1. 1 Peter 3:8 = “Finally, all of you should be of one mind. Sympathize with each other. Love each other as brothers and sisters. Be tenderhearted, and keep a humble attitude.” (NLT)

viii. “My… healer, provider, God, protector, strength and shield”

1. Psalm 28:7 = “The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and he helps me. My heart leaps for joy, and with my song I praise him.” (NIV)

ix. He is our strength! Even when we don’t feel strong.

Tea bags / pot = “A man should be like tea; his real strength appearing when he gets in hot water." (Author Unknown)

i. Brandon Heath Knell (age 37) ii. Lives in Nashville, TN; been making music since 2000 iii. Heath grew up nonreligiously, but was invited to

attend Malibu Club… age 16, Heath said he "heard about Jesus for the first time"; he said he never really went to church until attending the camp, and stated that Young Life "showed me Christ and got me plugged in to a church". After high school, he became a leader for the camp and is still involved with Young Life across the United States. Heath attended Middle Tennessee State University and earned a BA in English. (Wikipedia)

iv. Heath married his girlfriend, Siebe, on May 25, 2014 b. Where Has His Music Taken Him?

i. After his guitar was stolen in early 2000, he compiled a demo CD of his songs for sale to help pay for a new guitar. (Wikipedia.org)

ii. 6 albums, won several Dove awards, an Emmy Award, and nominated for several Grammy Awards

iii. Latest album, No Turning Back, released Feb. 2015

c. What Was His No Turning Back Moment? i. Latest album… What’s your #NoTurningBack

moment? Hear Brandon’s testimony as inspired by this album…

Video = “No Turning Back Moment” (1:19) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xsXBqzg9J7U

ii. So, what’s your No Turning Back Moment? Think

about that place, about that moment. Thank God for it and think about how it has made you better…

iii. Just like Brandon’s music & the messages in it keep getting better. I remember a couple years ago listening to his “Leaving Eden” album (2011):

II. It’s Good To Check Out Leaving Eden

a. The Heart Behind The Music i. Final product = songs on this album like: Stolen,

Might Just Save Your Life, Only Water, & Your Love ii. We may never think about this but a lot goes in to

making an album we can download and enjoy, and for Brandon Heath, before Leaving Eden released at the beginning of 2011, he was preparing and praying and traveling and ended up with this…

Video = “Brandon Heath – Leaving Eden (Part 1)” (2:14) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Vpm52kC3v4

iii. What was it all about… God’s love! iv. What was Jesus all about (while on earth)… God’s

love! (Greatest commandment? Most important?) 1. “Jesus replied, “‘You must love the Lord

your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” (Matthew 22:37-39, NLT)

2. Love God, love people… it’s that simple! b. The Heart Behind Your Pain

i. But, Justin, it doesn’t feel that simple for me… I’m struggling to love myself much less God/others?

1. Rewind to 2007 with Brandon’s old hit “I’m Not Who I Was”… listen to his story of a broken home, forgiveness, restoration:

Video = “The Story Behind The Song – “I’m Not Who I Was” (2:43)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tWdi32eQ65E

ii. Regardless of your backstory… wherever you are now, we need each other. You were never meant to do this life alone. It’s no good that way!

iii. Hear the message in this song…

III. It’s No Good To Be Alone a. How Did God Design Us?

i. Wanna know what the church is supposed to look like, let’s go back to the first church (Acts)…

Acts 2:42-47 = ”They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to

fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. 44 All the

believers were together and had everything in common. 45 They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being

saved.” (NIV)

ii. They were “devoted” (dedicated, excited, fanatical) iii. About studying, hanging, and praying together iv. Saw God do miracles, got along, lived generously,

loved being with each other, and God blessed! b. Why Is It No Good To Be Alone?

i. Being alone can lead to temptation = “’Why are you sleeping?’ he asked them. ‘Get up and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation.’” (Luke 22:46, NLT)

ii. God calls us to live in community = “And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another…’ (Heb. 10:25, NLT)

iii. There is strength in numbers = “Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed. If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But someone who falls alone is in real trouble.” (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10, NLT)

iv. Our gifts are exponentially better when combined with others (take the power rangers for example) = “So it is with Christ’s body. We are many parts of one body, and we all belong to each other.” (Romans 12:5, NLT)

v. So… how’s FBSM doing with community?

The president of the Doggie Vittles dog food company summoned his managers to an emergency meeting in his office. Pacing the room, he barked out a series of questions. “Men and women, my fellow employees! Tell me!

What dog food company has the most nutritious dog food in all of America?” The managers all shouted back, “Doggie Vittles, sir!” “And what dog food company has the most attractive packaging of any dog food company in America?” “Doggie Vittles, sir!” they replied in unison. “And what dog food company has spent more on advertising than any other dog food company in America?” “Doggie Vittles, sir!” they yelled back. The president paused before shouting out a last question. “Then why—why aren’t we selling more dog food than any other dog food company in America?” The room went very quiet. Finally, someone in the back of the room spoke up. “Well, sir, it’s because the dogs don’t like it.”

Big events, big names, high-tech programming, and fun activities often attract new kids to our youth group. But all the flash must be backed by our friendship and love and by our message of the good news about Jesus Christ. It doesn’t matter how much money we spend or how many exciting attractions we present, unless kids have their social and spiritual needs met, they won’t keep coming back. (Hot Illustrations 1.0, Meeting With The Top Dog)

vi. We, as a student ministry & as people, need to do all we can to surround ourselves with godly people because God says, “It’s no good to be alone”…

Video = “The Leaving Eden Sessions: It's No Good To Be Alone”

(4:16) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=14E4d6jwRrY

c. What Are You Going To Do About Your Loneliness? i. My challenge… take an action step. Go meet

someone new, connect with someone other than people like you on social media, send an encouraging text to an old friend, show up and sit with someone different, ask me to connect you with someone to pray for. Stop doing life alone!

“My Heart, Christ’s Home” by Robert Boyd Munger (1951)

One evening I invited Jesus Christ into my heart. What an entrance He

made! It was not a spectacular, emotional thing, but very real. It was at the very center of my life. He came into the darkness of my heart and turned on the light. He built a fire in the cold hearth and banished the chill. He started music where there had been stillness, and He filled the emptiness with His own loving, wonderful fellowship. I have never regretted opening the door to Christ and I never will - not into eternity!

This, of course, is the first step in making the heart Christ's home. He has said, "Behold I stand at the door and knock: if any man hear my voice and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me." (Revelation 3:20). If you are interested in making your life an abode of the living God, let me encourage you to invite Christ into your heart and He will surely come

After Christ entered my heart and in the joy of this new relationship I said to Him, "Lord, I want this heart of mine to be Yours. I want to have You settle down here and be perfectly at home. Everything I have belongs to You. Let me show You around and introduce you to the various features of the home that you may be more comfortable and that we may have fuller fellowship together."

He was very glad to come, of course, and happier still to be given a place in the heart The Library

The first room was the study - the library. Let us call it the study of the mind. Now in my home this room of the mind is a very small room with very thick walls. But it is an important room. In a sense, it is the control room of the house. He entered with me and looked around at the books in the bookcase, the magazines upon the table, the pictures on the walls. As I followed His gaze I became uncomfortable. Strangely enough, I had not felt badly about this before, but now that He was there looking at these things I was embarrassed. There were some books were there that His eyes were too pure to behold. There was a lot of trash and literature on the table that a Christian had no business reading, and as for the pictures on the walls - the imaginations and thoughts of the mind - these were shameful.

I turned to Him and said, "Master, I know that this room needs a radical alteration. Will You help me make it what it ought to be? - to bring every thought into captivity to you?"

"Surely!" He said. "Gladly will I help you. First of all, take all the things that you are reading and looking at which are not helpful, pure, good and true, and throw them out! Now put on the empty shelves the books of the Bible. Fill the library with Scriptures and meditate on then day and night. As for the pictures on the walls, you will have difficulty controlling these images, but here is an aid" He gave me a full-size portrait of Himself. "Hang this centrally," He said, "on the wall of the mind."

I did, and I have discovered through the years that when my thoughts are centered upon Christ Himself, His purity and power cause impure thoughts to back away. So He has helped me to bring my thoughts into captivity. May I suggest to you if you have difficulty with this little room of the mind, that you bring Christ in there. Pack it full with the Word of God, meditate upon it and keep before it the immediate presence of the Lord Jesus. The Dining Room

From the study we went into the dining room, the room of appetites and desires. Now this was a very large room. I spent a good deal of time in the dining room and much effort in satisfying my wants. I said to Him, "This is a favorite room. I am quite sure You will be pleased with what we serve."

He seated Himself at the table with me and asked, "What is on the menu for dinner?"

"Well," I said, "my favorite dishes: money, academic degrees and stocks, with newspaper articles of fame and fortune as side dishes." These were the things I liked - worldly fare. I suppose there was nothing radically wrong in

any particular item, but it was not the food that should satisfy the life of a real Christian. When the food was placed before Him, He said nothing about it. However, I observed that He did not eat it, and I said to Him, somewhat disturbed, "Master, don't You care for this food? What is the trouble?"

He answered, "I have meat to eat that you do not know of. My meat is to do the will of Him that sent Me." He looked at me again and said, "If you want food that really satisfies you, seek the will of the Father, not your own pleasures, not your own desires, and not your own satisfaction. Seek to please Me and that food will satisfy you." And there at the table He gave me a taste of doing God's will. What a flavor! There is no food like it in all the world. It alone satisfies. Everything else is dissatisfying in the end.

Now if Christ is in your heart, and I trust He is, what kind of food are you serving Him and what kind of food are you eating yourself? Are you living for the lust of the flesh and the pride of life - selfishly? Or are you choosing God's will for your meat and drink? The Living Room

We walked next into the living room. This room was rather intimate and comfortable. I liked it. It had a fireplace, overstuffed chairs, a sofa, and a quiet atmosphere.

He also seemed pleased with it. He said, "This is indeed a delightful room. Let us come here often. It is secluded and quiet, and we can fellowship together."

Well, naturally as a young Christian I was thrilled. I couldn't think of anything I would rather do than have a few minutes with Christ in intimate companionship.

He promised, "I will be here early every morning. Meet me here, and we will start the day together." So morning after morning, I would come downstairs to the living room and He would take a book of the Bible from the bookcase. He would open it and then we would read together. He would tell me of its riches and unfold to me its truths. He would make my heart warm as He revealed His love and His grace He had toward me. These were wonderful hours together. In fact, we called the living room the "withdrawing room." It was a period when we had our quiet time together.

But, little by little, under the pressure of many responsibilities, this time began to be shortened. Why, I'm don't know, but I thought I was just too busy to spend time with Christ. This was not intentional, you understand; it just happened that way. Finally, not only was the time shortened, but I began to miss a day now and then. It was examination time at the university. Then it was some other urgent emergency. I would miss it two days in a row and often more.

I remember one morning when I was in a hurry, rushing downstairs, eager to be on my way.

As I passed the living room, the door was open. Looking in, I saw a fire in the fireplace and Jesus was sitting there. Suddenly in dismay I thought to myself, "He was my guest. I invited Him into my heart! He has come as Lord of my home. And yet here I am neglecting Him."

I turned and went in. With downcast glance, I said, "Blessed Master, forgive me. Have You been here all these mornings?"

"Yes," He said, "I told you I would be here every morning to meet with you." Then I was even more ashamed. He had been faithful in spite of my faithfulness. I asked His forgiveness and He readily forgave me as He does when we are truly repentant.

"The trouble with you is this: you have been thinking of the quiet time, of the Bible study and prayer time, as a factor in your own spiritual progress, but you have forgotten that this hour means something to me also. Remember, I love you. I have redeemed you at great cost. I value your fellowship. Now," He said, "do not neglect this hour if only for my sake. Whatever else may be your desire, remember I want your fellowship!"

You know, the truth that Christ desires my companionship, that He loves me, wants me to be with Him, wants to be with me and waits for me, has done more to transform my quiet time with God than any other single fact. Don't let Christ wait alone in the living room of your heart, but every day find some time when, with your Bible and in prayer, you may be together with Him. The Workroom

Before long, He asked, "Do you have a workroom in your home?" Down in the basement of the home of my heart I had a workbench and some equipment, but I was not doing much with it. Once in a while I would play around with a few little gadgets, but I wasn't producing anything substantial or worthwhile.

I led Him down there. He looked over the workbench and what little talents and skills I had.

He said, "This is quite well furnished. What are you producing with your life for the Kingdom of God?" He looked at one or two little toys that I had thrown together on the bench and held one up to me. "Are these little toys all that you are doing for others in your Christian life?"

"Well," I said, "Lord, that is the best I can do. I know it isn't much, and I really want to do more, but after all, I have no skill or strength to do more."

"Would you like to do better?" He asked. "Certainly," I replied. "All right. Let me have your hands. Now relax in me and let my Spirit

work through you. I know that you are unskilled, clumsy and awkward, but the Holy Spirit is the Master-Worker, and if He controls your hands and your heart, He will work through you." And so, stepping around behind me and putting His great, strong hands over mine, controlling the tools with His skilled fingers He began to work through me.

There's much more that I must still learn and I am very far from satisfied with the product that is being turned out, but I do know that whatever has been produced for God has been through His strong hand and through the power of His Spirit in me.

Do not become discouraged because you cannot do much for God. Your ability is not the fundamental condition. It is He who is controlling your fingers and upon whom you are relying. Give your talents and gifts to God and He will do things with them that will surprise you..

The Rec Room I remember the time He asked me about the playroom. I was hoping

He would not ask about that. There were certain associations and friendships, activities and amusements that I wanted to keep for myself. I did not think Christ would enjoy them or approve of them, so I evaded the question. But there came an evening when I was on my way out with some of my friends, and as I was about to cross the threshold, He stopped me with a glance and asked, "Are you going out?"

I replied, "Yes." "Good," He said, "I would like to go with you." "Oh," I answered rather awkwardly. "I don't think, Lord Jesus, that You

would really want to go with us. Let's go out tomorrow night. Tomorrow night we will go to prayer meeting, but tonight I have another appointment."

He said. "That's alright. Only I thought that when I came into your home, we were going to do everything together, to be close companions. I just want you to know that I am willing to go with you."

"Well," I said, "we will go someplace together tomorrow night." That evening I spent some miserable hours. I felt wretched. What kind

of a friend was I to Jesus when I was deliberately leaving Him out of my associations, doing things and going places that I knew very well He would not enjoy? When I returned that evening, there was a light in His room, and I went up to talk it over with Him. I said, "Lord, I have learned my lesson. I can't have a good time without You. From now on we will do everything together."

Then we went down into the playroom of the house and He transformed it. He brought into life real joy, real happiness, real satisfaction, new friends, new excitement, new joys. Laughter and music have been ringing through the house ever since. The Hall Closet

There is just one more matter that I might share with you. One day I found Him waiting for me at the door. An arresting look was in His eye. As I entered, He said to me, "There is a peculiar odor in the house. There is something dead around here. It's upstairs. I think it is in the hall closet." As soon as He said this, I knew what He was talking about. Yes, there was a small closet up there on the landing, just a few feet square, and in that closet, behind lock and key, I had one or two little personal things that I did not want anyone to know about and certainly I did not want Christ to see them. I knew they were dead and rotting things left over from the old life. And yet I loved them, and I wanted them so for myself that I was afraid to admit they were there.

Reluctantly, I went up with Him, and as we mounted the stairs the odor became stronger and stronger. He pointed at the door. "It's in there! Some dead thing!"

I was angry. That's the only way I can put it. I had given Him access to the library, the dining room, the living room, the workroom, the playroom, and now He was asking me about a little two-by-four closet. I said to myself, "This is too much. I am not going to give Him the key."

"Well," He said, reading my thoughts, "if you think I'm going to stay up here on the second floor with this odor, you are mistaken. I will take my bed out

on the back porch. I'm certainly not going to put up with that." Then I saw Him start down the stairs.

When you have come to know and love Christ, the worst thing that can happen is to sense His fellowship retreating from you. I had to surrender. "I'll give You the key," I said sadly, "but You'll have to open the closet and clean it out. I haven't the strength to do it."

"I know," He said. "I know you haven't. Just give me the key. Just authorize me to take care of that closet and I will." So with trembling fingers I passed the key to Him. He took it from my hand, walked over to the door, opened it, entered it, took out all the putrefying stuff that was rotting there, and threw it away. The He cleaned the closet and painted it, fixed it up, doing it all in a moment's time. Oh, what victory and release to have that dead thing out of my life! Transferring the Title

Then a thought came to me. I said to myself, "I have been trying to keep this heart of mine clear for Christ. I start on one room and no sooner have I cleaned that then another room is dirty. I begin on the second room and the first room becomes dusty again. I am so tired and weary trying to maintain a clean heart and an obedient life. I am just not up to it!"

So I ventured a question: "Lord, is there any chance that You would take over the responsibility of the whole house and operate it for me and with me just as You did that closet? Would You take the responsibility to keep my heart what it ought to be and my life where it ought to be?"

I could see His face light up as He replied, "Certainly, that is what I came to do. You cannot be a victorious Christian in your own strength. That is impossible. Let me do it through you and for you. That is the way. But," He added slowly, "I am not owner of this house. I am just a guest. I have no authority to proceed, since the property is not mine."

I saw it in a minute and dropping to my knees, I said, "Lord, You have been a guest and I have been the host. From now on I am going to be the servant. You are going to be the owner and Master and Lord."

Running as fast as I could to the strongbox, I took out the title deed to the house describing its assets and liabilities, location and situation and condition. I eagerly signed it over to belong to Him alone for time and eternity. "Here," I said. "Here it is, all that I am and have forever. Now You run the house. I'll just remain with You as a servant and friend."

He took my life that day and I can give you my word, there is no better way to live the Christian life. He knows how to keep it in shape and deep peace settles down on the soul. May Christ settle down and be at home in your heart as Lord of all!

If you are like me… you have a soundtrack for life, you love music and how it can change your mood, give you direction, and add an extra something to all you do. The best kind of music is that which finds its root in God’s Word. Welcome back to our third edition of “Message In The Music”. We kick this summer’s series off with a young lady you got to know personally just a few months ago at her concert in our own AHS Fine Arts Center… Mrs. Kari Jobe:

to her son, named Canyon Morrison Caine Carnes. The child was born 9 pounds and 13 ounces in weight and 22.5 inches tall. (Wikipedia.org)

iv. Simply… because she loves broken people and God is

using her life for His glory (not about her).

II. Getting To Know This Song a. The History Of “I Am Not Alone”

i. Long overdue idea, band got together for a writing day at a cabin (got away from the busyness of life)

ii. The presence of God showed up and made this possible… felt the nearness of God in this song

iii. It relates to all of us whatever we’re going through b. The Lyrics Of “I Am Not Alone”

i. Listen to the powerful words, let them meet you where you are right now in life:

ii. “When I walk through deep waters” iii. “When I'm standing in the fire” iv. “Through the valley of the shadow” v. “In the midst of deep sorrow” vi. “The dark of night will not overtake me” vii. No matter what… “I am not alone”

c. The Message Of “I Am Not Alone” i. Listen to Kari Jobe tell us about this message…

III. Getting To Know God’s Presence a. When Have You Sensed His Presence?

i. Ever feel like your world is crashing in on you and just need a release and God just shows up and calms you down? Ever felt a sense of peace in the midst of loads of chaos in your life? That’s His Presence!

b. He Is Your Guide i. The main Scriptural basis for this song “I Am Not

Alone” is found in this powerful call of God in Isaiah:

Isaiah 43:1-2, 5 = “But now, O Jacob, listen to the Lord who created you. O Israel, the one who formed you says, ‘Do not be afraid, for I have ransomed you. I have called you by name; you are mine. When you go through deep

waters, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown. When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned

up; the flames will not consume you... Do not be afraid, for I am with you.’” (NLT)

ii. Things will get tough in life. I was reading about

endurance just the other day and God gave me this… 1. “Unfortunately, there’s no way to learn

endurance other than to simply endure. I can’t learn it in principle or in theory; only pain can teach it to me. Experience is the only way to know Him.” (5/16/16)

iii. As you endure trials, I hope you realize that God promises to never leave you alone… ever!

1. “I will never fail you. I will never abandon you.” (Hebrew 13:5, NLT)

iv. He will always guide us and always go with us, even through the difficulties / through the failures!

Biographers have written that Thomas

Edison, the inventor of the light bulb, made over nine hundred light bulbs that didn’t work before he finally made one that did. Nine hundred times he went to all the trouble of making a light bulb, plugging it in, flipping the switch, and watching

while nothing happened. People must have thought he was nuts, but he kept on trying. According to Edison, every time he made a light bulb that didn’t work, he merely found “one more way not to make a light bulb.” Eventually, by the process of elimination, he made a light bulb that produced light. As a result, he is known as one of the greatest inventors of all time.

Most of us don’t realize how many failures successful people endure before they achieve their purposes. We only hear about the one time they succeed. What made Edison great was his commitment to making a light bulb. He didn’t let his failures discourage him. He hung in there and kept trying, even though he kept goofing up.

c. He Is Your Protection i. As we face trials and know He’s with us, let’s not

forget that our God is a fighter! 1. Exodus 14:14 = “The Lord himself will fight

for you. Just stay calm.” (NLT) ii. He will fight for us… just be still iii. He is in this with you, He isn’t punishing you; keep

trusting and believing, say like the psalmist:

1. Psalm 23:4 = “Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me.” (NLT)

2. This is what it means to know that you are not alone. Listen to the powerful message of God through this song by Kari Jobe:
