Helping Children To Learn Well Term 2 Week 7 2015

Dear Parents and Friends of Albion Park Rail Public School

Why would you want to be a member of the school’s Parents & Citizens Association?

Our P&C contributes to the running of the school where your children attend. You can have your say

on things that concern your child’s education. Share your ideas. Contribute your skills. Meet new

people. Remember: you do NOT have to attend EVERY meeting but the more members we have the

better we can contribute towards many areas in the school.

If you have visited the school Office lately you might have noticed the extra gate installed on the

pathway to the classrooms. This gate will also be locked between 9am and 2.30pm to ensure that ALL

adults entering our school grounds during school times pass through our Office for identification. This

ensures the safety of all our students.

After last week’s Souper Wednesday we have been sharing our school produce with our families. The

pumpkins are all gone but there is still a supply of white sweet potatoes available. Simply drop in or

send a note with your child requesting some of our lovely organic produce.

What a beautiful day our school

representatives experienced on

Wednesday when they participated in

the Reconciliation Week Flag Walk.

They were excellent ambassadors and

also learned some interesting things on

the day.

Quote Of The Week

The true essence of reconciliation is

more than making friends with non

indigenous people. Our motto is united

Australia, one that respects the land and

the heritage of its indigenous peoples

and provides justice and equity for all. I

think reconciliation is about changing

the structures that govern us and trying

to influence opinion leaders in whatever

way we can. - Jackie Huggins

On the day only the 100m events will be finalised. The field events, 200m and 800m have been or will be held at

a different time.

Parents and carers are welcomed to come along and support our students on the day. There will also be Canteen

International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS)

ICAS assessments have taken place annually in NSW schools for over thirty years and in twenty countries. They

are a skills development assessment program in key areas of learning for students in Years 2 - 12 that gathers

information through a 30-60 minute supervised in-school test. These tests enable the progress of each student to

be mapped in each skill against their previous performance, demonstrating personal improvement no matter the

starting point. The tests are set out below:

Please see me if you are interested in sitting any of the tests to receive further information and a permission note.

P&C Messages

Our Next P&C Meeting

The next P&C meeting will be held on Wednesday 24th June 2015 at 6pm in the school Library.

Everyone is welcome to attend and there will be an area designated for children to sit and play or

read. We will endeavour to have at least 2-3 meetings a year at this earlier time.

In future ALL meetings will be held in the Library. This will allow a more family friendly environment and

hopefully allow more parents to attend.

We would like to invite everyone to join the P&C for an annual fee of only $2.

Why Should I Join The P&C?

Here are some of the many benefits:

Make a positive contribution to your child’s school

Meet new people

Gain experience

Share ideas and skills/talents

Bring your thoughts, ideas and suggestions alone to our meeting and together we will work to make our school

the best it can be for all.

Canteen News - Name Our Canteen Competition

The Canteen is run by the P&C with the support of the school, but

actually belongs to the students.

We would like our students to come up with a name and/or logo for

their Canteen. Entries are to be handed into your child’s class teacher

and the entry voted best in class will go into the final draw. Closing

date is Thursday 18th June 2015.

Please make sure your child’s name and class are written on their

entries. The winner will get to see their work on a new sign outside the

Canteen.

Potato and Gravy is available at the Canteen on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays for 50c

As of Wednesday the following trial healthy choice items will be available at the Canteen:

Vegetable Sticks and Dip ONLY $1

Cheese and Crackers ONLY $1

Fruit Yoghurt and Muesli Cup ONLY $1

Shoebox Movement

Last Friday I made the trek to Wollongong to deliver our shoeboxes to the lovely ladies from the Wollongong

Homeless Hub. They were thrilled to receive the donations. Thank you so much to all those who have made a

donation.

Did you know that on any given night in the Illawarra, there are approximately 1500 sleeping rough? This

includes women, men, children and youth. Wollongong Homeless Hub are asking for the support of all schools in

"Wrapping Up Homelessness". On Friday 12th June, wear a scarf to school and make a gold coin donation. The

donations will be used to provide care packages, meals, shelter, sleeping bags etc. to those people who

experience homelessness in the Illawarra.

In the meantime, I would love it if we could keep the Shoebox Movement happening. Donations of shoe boxes -

full or empty; tins of spaghetti, baked beans, soup, cups of noodles, tea, socks, beanies, scarves ... anything that

you can think of that would help out someone in these circumstances would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Wakakirri Update

Wakakirri Tickets

You can order your tickets for our Wakakirri performance on 13th August 2015 from our Office for $35 each.

You do NOT need to buy a ticket for your Waka Performer/Back Stager. Children under the age of 2 who will be

sitting on your lap will be free. You can order your tickets from now until 20th June from the Office but after

that date tickets will only be available through the WEC Box Office.

Thank you to all the wonderful ladies who attended our

Wakakirri Sewing Bee today. It is only with the help

of our community that we are able to offer our students

opportunities like Wakakirri. For many it will be the

one and only time they will tread the boards and be on

stage.

Thank you to the amazing group at Shellharbour Youth

Centre who assisted some of our budding artists in Year

5 and 6 with our Wakakirri prop. It looks incredible!

The Shellharbour Youth Centre runs programs for not only for our students but many others throughout the

local area. Why not check what they have to offer on the links below, or give them a call!
