Dean David FAusIMM(CP), Technical Director – Process,

Amec Foster Wheeler

Dean has 35 years’ experience in mineral processingresearch, operations, management and consulting. Hisexpertise covers most aspects of mineral processingtechnology. Dean has fulfilled roles as Manager Process atAmec Foster Wheeler for two years, Process Consultant

for six years and now Technical Director of Process. He has had participation in themajority of the mineral processing studies and projects conducted by Amec FosterWheeler in the past 12 years, typically in a consulting and reviewing role.

Metallurgical QA/QC – Who Needs it? The Olympic DamExperience

Dr Kathy Ehrig MAusIMM, Principal Geometallurgist, BHP

Kathy is recognised as a leader of technical excellence, establishing the Olympic Dam geometallurgy programmore than a decade ago when this was still an emergingfield. She has made significant contributions in the fieldsof mineralogy, geochemistry, core logging, orebodymodelling and geometallurgy. She left the USA for

Australia to join what was then WMC in 1992 as a research geologist to work on thegenesis of the Olympic Dam deposit and to provide mineralogical support to themetallurgy department. She continues to lead this work to this day, dividing her timebetween site, Adelaide and various research facilities. It is a mark of Kathy’sdedication to understanding the Olympic Dam deposit that she has spent the past25 years studying and researching this complex deposit and she has willingly andgenerously mentored many other professional metallurgists, geologists and miningengineers over that time.

Technology Change by Regulation – a Cresting Wave?

Peter Munro FAusIMM, Principal Consultant, Mineralis

Consultants Pty Ltd

With 45 years’ experience in technical, commercial, operating, design and managerial roles, including over 23years in Mt Isa and seven years in Brisbane MIM Corporate,Peter has developed an unrivalled understanding of theminerals business. He has extensive knowledge of thewhole value chain – geology, geometallurgy, minerals

processing, extractive metallurgy, concentrate marketing, project design andevaluation and financing. Combined with his strong analytical skills, Peter haspowerful insight into the fundamental technical and commercial drivers of mineraldeposits and operations; both existing and proposed. For the past 15 years, Peterhas provided specialist advice for acquisitions and divestments, pre-feasibility andfeasibility studies, project evaluations, and commercial support to finance providersand insurance claims.

Critical Process Design Considerations from Test Workto Operation

Alan Dennis MAusIMM(CP), Concentrator Business

Manager, Outotec

Conference Workshops

This one-day course examines the current state of the processing of lithium ores to abattery‐ready product and is aimed at minerals industry professionals who wish togain a greater understanding of the processing principles and practices as applied tolithium ores.

The topics covered include an overview of uses and demand for lithium, lithiumgeology, comminution, coarse and fine particle separation methods, typicalflowsheets, conversion of concentrates and a summary including some specificthings to be aware of. The workshop is primarily about hard rock resources but alsohas an overview of brine resources and processing.

PRE-CONFERENCE INTERACTIVE WORKSHOP 1W1: Gold Recovery without Cyanide8.30 am – 12.30 pm

This workshop will examine the impact of changing legislation and regulationas external drivers of technical change in mineral processing and extractivemetallurgy, specifically focussing on cyanide and what this would mean for thegold industry. What are the options for gold recovery in jurisdictions wherecyanide is banned?

What are the consequences resulting from the various alternatives?

Processes to be considered include the use of Thiosulphate, Glycine, Bromineand Bromide, and other lixiviants. Related topics might include zero discharge, site remediation and treatment of hydrocarbon contaminated material.Participants who have experience with these or other reagents, or a case studyto present, are invited to contact the MetPlant Convenors.

The workshop will be facilitated by the MetPlant Convenors and chaired by RobDunne.

PRE-CONFERENCE INTERACTIVE WORKSHOP 2W2: Dewatering and Dry Stacking of Tailings1.30 pm – 5.00 pm

This workshop will broadly encompass the theme of Rob Dunne’sDistinguished lecture later that evening titled Water in mining – facts, perceptions and conflicts. The workshop will be facilitated by the MetPlantConvenors and chaired by David Brett.

Topics will include preferred methods of dewatering, including gravitythickeners, filtration and dry stacking requirements compared with tailingsdams. Tailings dams have been a continuing cause of concern, for design, construction, seepage, short and long term management, weather events andfailures, but when well designed and managed tailings dam are safe and drystacking is not the magic bullet to solve all tailings issues.

Dry stacking of filtered tailings are likely to become more common as waterresources become scarcer, but benefits can be achieved in other ways fromslurry tailings in appropriate climates by water management and solar drying ormud-farming.

Participants who have a related case study to present, are invited to contact theMetPlant Convenors.

PRE-CONFERENCE INTERACTIVE WORKSHOPS 1 AND 2Sunday 10 September 2017

Both will be interactive open forum workshops. Critical topics will be briefly introduced by well-known experts who have experience with variousalternatives, then the topic will be opened for discussion by experts and participants. Issues for discussion are invited from those attending. Weencourage attendance at both W1 and W2 as the alternatives to cyanide economically require leach solution recovery and recycle, which is relevantto W2. There is an attractive discount offered for those who wish to attend both. Lunch is included for both to encourage networking and sharing ofinformation to continue. For both workshops we can (for the whole or part of the workshop) invoke The Chatham House Rule, to encourage the opensharing of information.

This tour will incorporate two major ALS facilities in Perth – Balcatta andWangara. The traditional home of ALS in Balcatta is where non-ferrouscommodities such gold, base metals, graphite and uranium are tested, and alsohouses support services including mineralogical examination, a HLS lab andon-site assay lab for metallurgical products. The world’s largest independentpilot plant facilities are also on this site, including SABC, HPAL and HPGR.

The second leg of the tour will incorporate the IOTC which provides a uniqueintegration of analytical, metallurgical, mineralogical and ancillary testingservices specifically focused on the iron ore sector. Through this largepurpose-built facility in Wangara, ALS has achieved a quantum expansion of
