Envelope of the BOLD response
• First oxygen isconsumed, which causesT2* signal loss (initialdip)
• Then, flow of oxygen richblood happens, whichcauses T2* signal
increase (positive BOLDresponse).

Simple Circuits Aren’t Simple
Will BOLD activation from the blue
voxel reflect:• output of the black neuron (actionpotentials)?
• excitatory input (green synapses)?
• inhibitory input (red synapses)?
• inputs from the same layer (whichconstitute ~80% of synapses)?
• feedforward projections (fromlower-tier areas)?
• feedback projections (from higher-tier areas)?
Lower tier area(e.g., thalamus)
Middle tier area(e.g., V1, primary visual
cortex)
Higher tier area(e.g., V2, secondary
visual cortex)

Ok right, but what does BOLD measure?
We need a combined intracortical recording/FMRIexperiment.
Logothetis et al. (2001 in Nature) did this and
presented a visual stimulus for 4, 12 or 24 s.
Compared local field potentials (LFP) and multi-unit acitivity (MUA) with BOLD MRI.
12
RESULT: BOLD activityis more closely relatedto LFPs than MUA
Local Field Potentials (LFP)
• reflect post-synaptic potentials (combined input)
• similar to what EEG (ERPs) and MEG measure
Multi-Unit Activity (MUA)
• reflects action potentials (output)
• similar to what most electrophysiology measures.

Welk neuraal circuit?

Proton, magnetism, precession
3. The frequency of theprecession depends onthe strength of themagnetic field!
1. Because of the spinthe hydrogen atom isshifted from the axis ofthe B0 field.
2. This results in arotation around the axisof the magnetic field (theprecession rate).

1. THE MAGNET CAUSES ATOMS TO SPIN AROUND THE MAGNETIC AXIS WITH A SPECIFICFREQUENCY, THE SO-CALLED LARMOR FREQUENCY
2. WHEN THE RADIO EMITS RADIO SIGNALS EXACTLY AT THE RIGHT FREQUENCY, IT WILLEXCITE THE ATOMS IN TWO WAYS: LONDITUDINAL (T1) & TRANSVERSAL (T2).
3. AFTER TURNING OFF THE RADIO, THE ORIENTATION OF THE ATOMS WILL REALIGN WITH THE
MAGNETIC FIELD AND SEND BACK A RADIO SIGNAL (T1) AND SPINS BETWEEN ATOMS WILLDESYNCHRONIZE (T2) CAUSING SIGNAL LOSS OVER TIME

How functional MRI works (T2*)
In the real world, spinsdesynchronize much fasterthan T2 would predict.
This is because pure T2 decay isa function of completelyrandom interactions betweenspins.
In reality, there are manyimperfections in thehomogeneity of a magnetic
field.

A TMS coil is placed above the cortical area you want to target
Occipital (Visual) Area Motor Area
TMS is a technique with which you can disrupt neural activity at a local level and
influence activity in neural networks.

• Door snelle veranderingen in het magnetisch veld,
wordt elektrische stroom in het onderliggende

• TMS veroorzaakt vaak actiepotentialen.
• Maar beïnvloedt ook andere neurale processen.

Electrical current is generated and discharged.
This generates a magnetic pulse!
! changing at a rapid rate.
This current causes neurons to depolarize and fire
Prolonged stimulation results in a decrease of the firing rate.
As a result, an electric field is
induced.
A current is induced in cortical tissue.
