JAMES BUTLER Sports luxe has always been a tricky subject in men’s fashion. For some, ‘sporty’ involves their favourite Rugby Club emblazoned sweatpants, corresponding jersey and trashy trainers. Alas gentlemen, the term ‘Sports-luxe’ will require considerably more effort than that to be aesthetically appealing in the style stakes. The menswear runways for 2014 were awash with sports luxe looks that offered comfort and class with every trainer adorned stride. Houses such as Givenchy and Alexander Wang presented a barrage of brilliant pieces that took sportswear into an everyday environment, focusing on sleek silhouettes and fashion forward fabrics that are simply too sublime to even grace the smoothie bar of a gym. So gentlemen, grab those leather joggers and studded sneakers.

The key to owning the Sports luxe trend is all about balance and juxtaposition- begin with one key piece and work from there. Take, for example, a statement sweater. The high street is filled with heavy cotton sweatshirts that come in a variety of textures and finishes. Opt for a piece that has different panels- perhaps one in grey marl, one in white cotton and one in faux leather. Team with this a pair of skinny fit jogger bottoms (to contrast the complexity of the top half) that match one of the panels in the sweater, add a pair of simple black hi-tops and a peekaboo sock, and you’re ready to rock.

If you’re feeling a little adventurous, why not ditch those jaded jeans and slip into some skinny fit leather pants? While the prospect of channelling your inner Ross from Friends may seem rather daunting, a good pair of leather pants can actually be quite the wardrobe investment. When teamed with an oversized printed jersey fit tee and your favourite statement trainers, these pants are quintessentially sports luxe. They can also garner serious ensemble envy when teamed with a simple white shirt and charcoal overcoat in winter. Now there’s bargain for your fashion buck!

Of course, as with every trend, accessories really are the finishing factor in your quest for sports luxe success. Keep your basic pieces to hand, but inject a serious dose of decadence. Backpacks should be anything but basic - think quilted leather or holographic hues. Similarly, jewellery can be a great way to take your look to the next level. Add a chunky watch or some ghetto gold bling, and don’t be afraid to don a leather snapback for full effect.

So there you have it gentlemen, Sports luxe summed up.

HIGH RISER

CHUN SOOT

Hey Chun, tell us how you were “discovered” as a model and how it has been going so far?

I was first discovered by Roy Wong a very gifted make-up artist, he said I have a very distinct face and would do very well as a model. At first I was very sceptical about it and never imagined I could model. But Roy arranged a photo shoot with Daniel Holfeld for an online magazine, which encouraged me to try get signed to an agency.

When the magazine was posted, I was contacted by the amazing Fashion Business Woman of the Year, Anne Morgan to sign with Distinct Model Management. It all just went uphill from there on. I did several shoots soon after being signed and was then signed to Trend Models in Barcelona and I got the chance to fly to multiple countries, it’s a very rewarding job and I feel very blessed to have these opportunities.

Tell us a bit about your very first photo shoot.

My first shoot was for Chasseur online magazine, with Daniel Holfeld, Roy Wong, Brian Conway and Raymond Tang, all very talented people and great at what they do. When we started, I had no idea what I was doing or even how to pose. But I was told to loosen up, pose whichever way I felt like. It ended up being a very fun shoot and the images turned out amazing.

You were recently in Barcelona shooting for Bershka, how was that experience?

It was the first commercial shoot I ever did and it was for a huge company like Bershka. It was a new learning experience, next time I will know exactly what to do and what they want. You are always on the go, constantly changing outfits and different poses every second. But was very nice to work with people from Bershka and meet other models from the likes of Elite, View and Uno.

What do you do when you are not modelling?

When I’m not modelling, I enjoy spending time with my friends, I go to college during the week and during the weekends I work as a bartender in Temple Bar. But really enjoy the times when I’m at home just relaxing, having a cup of tea and watching Game of Thrones.

How would you descrive your personal style?

My style is very simple; I wear a lot of black, grey and white as most guys probably would. The style of clothes I wear are usually from the likes of River island, Topman, Zara, Bershka and Superdry.

Who would you like to work with in the future?

I would love to work with Daniel Holfeld, Roy Wong and Brian Conway again, they are just wonderful to work with. But I also would love to work with a few more Irish photographers and stylists soon.

What’s your favourite band/DJ right now?

I love Miley Cyrus!!! I’m joking, I don’t have a particular preference, and I like many different types of music. But mainly EDM and upbeat music for example Imagine Dragons, Martin Garrix and Calvin Harris. But there is days when I love a bit of Coldplay, One Republic, The Coronas, Kodaline and Lana Del Rey.

What is your greatest strength?

My greatest strength is definitely my positive attitude. No matter what situation I am in, I’m always optimistic and I always have a smile on my face. You learn to be a happier person when you have that kind of attitude.

International flights, international agencies, and international clients for this Irish male model Chun Soot who was recently signed to Trend Models in Barcelona and is signed with Distinct Models here in Ireland. We caught up with Chun on his travels to see how it has been working abroad and how it all happened. Check it out.

JAMES BUTLER When it comes to affordable, fashion forward and accessible menswear, River Island has long been a champion of the high street. Its collections offer a vast range of pieces that cater to every style of customer; from snapback-sporting trendsetters, to mature young professionals on the lookout for that perfectly tailored suit. While other brands often offer ‘high fashion’ pieces that can alienate the typical Irish male, River Island provides perfect sartorial solutions to satisfy every need. MFI Magazine attended the AW’14 preview recently, and suffices to say, RI failed to disappoint.

COLLECTION REVIEW

RIVER ISLAND AW14

With a real focus on texture and tailoring, the new collection honours the modern silhouette that all River Island customers have come to know and love. The coats on show were structured and sleek, with monochromatic hues that showcased a feast of fabulous fabrics to perfection. Patterns took prominence, with overcoats and blazers in hounds tooth and tartan offering modern interpretations of Mod and Nineties grunge respectively. Personal favourites of MFI were the faux-pony hair biker, which will act as an essential transitional piece for many seasons to come, and the deliciously decadent double breasted camel overcoat. If you intend to invest in a statement coat for the coming season, it doesn’t come much better than this!

Texture and pattern continued to filter through the collection with a world of woollen knits that wouldn’t look out of place on a Sister by Sibling runway. Block panels, shaggy shapes and mohair blends all culminated in statement sweaters that will look sublime when paired with skinny jeans and a simple shoe. Of course, the standout piece has got to be the outrageous leopard print knit. While leopard print may be a hazard zone for

14

Page 15: MFI Magazine August 2014

most Irish men, it’s subtle grey and green hue means one can channel their inner beast without overwhelming their overall aesthetic. Let your top half do the talking!

River Island rounded off their collection with chic separates and classic colours. Skinny jeans in winter berry and wool pants in autumnal shades looked effortlessly elegant against crisp white grandfather collared shirts, while the surprising addition of a Baltic blue poncho (yes, a poncho!) offered that essential edge with which RI has become synonymous.

Take it from the MFI crew gentlemen- A/W has never been so appealing!

We are so lucky to have the talented photographer, Holly McGlynn shooting this month’s cover story. She made the trip from London to work with the team and the results are stunning. Holly is from Ireland and she was nominated for Irish Fashion Photographer of the Year earlier in 2014. Her client list is impressive with Levi’s, Tiffany and Ugg to get you started and some of her most recent shoots have included Louis Vuitton, Matthew Williamson, The Outnet, and Beyond Retro. She is also the street style photographer for the UK based women’s magazine, Company.

Here she gives us a taste of what her life is like.

How did you get started in photography?

I moved to Berlin after I graduated from Trinity and got really into photography while I was there. When I moved back to Dublin my flatmate at the time was a film producer. They needed a stills photographer, she asked me. Shooting for them and working on my own portfolio at the same time lead to me getting accepted onto an MA in photography at Goldsmith’s.

Were there particular photographers that inspired you?

Juergen Teller, She is Frank, and Miles Aldridge are all photographers that inspire me in different ways and I’m definitely influenced by different elements from all of their work.

You studied at the internationally renowned Goldsmiths College in London. Would you encourage other people looking to get into photography to do a Masters?

Not necessarily, I don’t think it’s essential at all. You can learn your craft through assisting. The masters was really useful in helping us develop concepts for photography projects and the importance of that and when I graduated saying I had an MA from Goldsmith’s did open doors but it is by no means the only way. Clients are only interested in your portfolio at the end of the day so as long as you keep shooting work for that, you’re ok.

You work for a lot of big brands, do you have any advice for dealing with clients?

Be professional, be friendly, arrive on time, stay within the agreed

budget, work your socks off, and deliver what you’ve committed to on time. Let your personality shine through, clients want to work with people they get on well with. If they like you they are much more inclined to book you again over someone else (as long as you’ve delivered on time, on budget etc!)

What is the most important lesson you have learned so far?

When you’re starting out, say yes to every opportunity that comes your way. There is a lot of power in that little word. Be relentless, no doesn’t really mean no, it means ‘not now’. Every time you have a new portfolio piece write to the person you want to work with and show them what you’ve been doing. Eventually you’ll show them something they’re interested in.

You’re currently living in London, what made you choose that particular city?

I moved to London to do a Masters in Photography and just ended up staying. London is an amazing city for so many industries, in particular the fashion industry. There are so many opportunities and because it’s such a big place, it feels like there is room for

everyone’s style or niche.

Are there any noticeable differences in the industry/way of working between London and Dublin?

My career took off in London and I have only worked in Dublin a few times since so I don’t feel like I’d be able to make a fair comparison. I think because Dublin is smaller, you’re much more likely to know someone who can get you a meeting, or recommend you for

something, or get your work seen. London definitely operates the same way but it’s just much more vast than Dublin.

When you come home to Ireland, what do you HAVE to do?

If I’m only home for weekend I can turn into a bit of hermit, just eating my mum’s cooking and laughing with my brothers and sisters (I’m the oldest of 6). If I’m back for a bit longer, I love to go to Hogan’s or The Library Bar. I love the IFI and around Capel street too. A wander around Rhinestones never goes amiss either! Everyone is talking about the rooftop bar at the Marker hotel so I’m determined to go there next time I’m back!

23

What has been your favourite shoot to date?

I recently did a shoot for Matthew Williamson. We shot down in Sussex on a beautiful day and had a fantastic time running around fields, living the country dream! I’m thrilled with the results of that shoot.

Most memorable moment of your career so far?

Seeing my Levi’s Revel campaign in Levi’s stores across Europe. My friend was in Amsterdam for the weekend and posted a photo of the Levi’s store there and my photos were everywhere.

How would you describe your style of photography?

Fun, colourful, bold photos that tell a story. That’s what I aim for and I hope others see that in my imagery.

What are you looking to get out of a shoot?

A strong set of images that tell a story. Concept is really important to me so for each shot I make sure it fits the concept and embellishes the story. But shoots are just as much about meeting new teams, having fun, and learning. I learn something new on each shoot I do.

What do you look for in a model?

Just someone who’s right for the story, I don’t have any specific criteria that have to met.

What was it like working with the MFI team in Dublin?

Great craic! The team was brilliant and location was amazing. Everyone worked well together and we had a great laugh throughout the day. I’m really happy with the end result too.

We’re focused on street style this issue and as a street style photographer for Company Magazine what do you look for?

It’s tricky because someone can look amazing but that doesn’t always mean their outfit will photograph well. Volume, texture, colour, and embellishment look good on camera so I keep my eyes peeled for that. There’s no magic formula though, I go with my instincts.

What’s next for you?

I’ve been commissioned to shoot at Latitude festival so as soon as I finish this interview I’m going there! After Latitude I am taking a well deserved holiday to Sicily. After that, I’m shooting at some more festivals and have a couple of exciting shoots with some cool brands lined up.

If you weren’t a photographer what would you do?

I’d love to have my own cooking show! Or start a vintage shop filled with beautiful pieces sourced from all over the world.

Street style hasn’t always been documented in the rigorous fashion it is now. There are websites, blogs, books, magazines and entire careers dedicated to showing fashion as it exists on our shared catwalk.

One trip to fashion week will give you some insight into the interest and industry of street style with models, designers and photographers milling around taking snaps of each other.

The clothes we wear, whether we admit it or not, are a way to express who we are. Whether you spend 5 mins or 5 hours getting dressed we all participate in the fashion show called life.

We began scouting out for some of the freshest style in Dublin and also to find out what our reader’s views were on certain subjects, like what is your favourite clothing brand? And how would you describe your personal style?

Well we have it all here, so make sure you keep an eye out on our social networks to see where the MFI team end up next, but until then ‘Enjoy the Streets.’

Brendan Courtney is one of the most fashionable men in Ireland, hence why we have chosen him as this month’s MFI man of the month. He is one of the top personas in the female fashion industry in Ireland but also flies the flag for men’s style.

A busy man, Brendan Courtney is a broadcaster, designer, author and entrepreneur. He is highly regarded as a fashion expert in both Ireland and the UK. In 2013 Brendan Courtney, along with Sonia Lennon his co-host from RTÉ’s Off the Rails, launched their very own womenswear clothing brand, Lennon Courtney. Not content with just having a clothing brand the duo then launched Frock Advisor a few months later.

We just can’t keep up with his busy work-life and he still manages to be one of the most

stylish men in Ireland.

Brendan Courtney always looks classically smart but with his own personal twists on his outfits. It is his mismatch of a classically tailored suit jacket and pants combo that gives him the extra edge when it comes to style. And he’s also not afraid to rock a pastel coloured suit. When Brendan Courtney does wear a matching suit pant’s combo he adds his own quirky touch with a patterned shirt or pocket square.

He can also often be seen keeping it casual in dark muted tones like navy, wearing a pair of rolled up chinos and jumper combination accessorised with loafers and a pop of colour with his bright pink socks peeping out.

Page 31: MFI Magazine August 2014

What inspired your passion for fashion and when did you realise you wanted to become a stylist.

I’ve always had a passion for fashion from a very young age, I was always obsessed with clothes and shopping, and it was something I grew up doing, I always gave my sisters fashion advice too. I would watch fashion TV religiously to keep up to date with all the fashion weeks across the globe.

How do you feel about the industry today?

The Fashion Industry in Ireland has come a long way in recent years but it still has a long way to go. I think Fashion is Dublin is great; we have so many creatives with so much talent that are doing us proud here and on an international level.

Where do you see yourself five years from now?

5 years from now, I would love to be flying around the world working with Vogue or W magazine as a creative director/stylist.

Is there any work you are currently working on that you would like to tell us about?

I’ve been doing quite a bit of work with Social and Personal and I have an upcoming shoot in the August issue, so check that out!!!

Who have you always dreamt of working with and why?

On an Irish level I always looked up to Daniel Holfeld and Courtney Smith for their creative shoots when I was younger and to have worked with them both has been such a pleasure. Models I would love to work with would be Cara Delevingne, Karlie Kloss, Naomi Campbell.... the list could go on and on...

Publication wise I would love to shoot editorials for Vogue Japan, Vogue China, Vogue Paris, Vogue Italia and W Magazine, the level of creativity is absolutely amazing, the sky is the limit.

If you could have asked anyone for advice when you were starting out, who would you have liked to ask?

Any creative currently working in the industry would be the best person to ask advice from. I think you never stop asking for advice, in this industry you are constantly learning and if you don’t adapt or change you will become stale.

What courses/classes would you recommend someone take if they want to be a professional in the creative industry?

People always ask this question. Of course it’s important to go to college and to get a degree but for anyone in creative industry I don’t believe it is necessary to have a degree, I would always encourage people to study something they are passionate about. I believe hard work and talent will get you to where you want to be.

I did come from a business background after studying in DIT and then I studied Darren Kennedy’s styling course. They were all great but you learn so much more through experience.

From your experience so far, what have you found to be most challenging? And how are you dealing with it?

There are challenges in every part of life and work. With regard to my job it has to be how last minute everything is; nothing is ever 100% set in stone. You should always expect the unexpected and have a plan b.

What is the proudest moment in your career so far?

My proudest moment this year was styling the March and April covers of Social and Personal Magazine

Where do you find inspiration for your work?

Inspiration comes from everywhere. It could be people, art, travel, architecture and of course I look to international fashion magazines to see what they are presenting.
