EDITOR’S LETTERWelcome to the July issue of MFI Magazine, Ireland’s go-to source for men’s fashion and style. It’s great to be back with our fifth issue this month; time has moved way too fast since our last edition.

Over the last month we held a cover model search via Instagram in which we had a ton of great faces enter. After a tough decision, Shane Gallagher from Co.Donegal joined the MFI team in the studio for a fresh cover shoot. Collaborating with PUMA we also held our first #10daysstraight campaign.

After that we unexpectedly headed to London Collections: Men for two hectic days of travelling, shows and unique style. Bringing back three things with us; motivation, elevation and inspiration.

Thank you all for your continued support and we hope you enjoy our July issue of MFI Magazine.

ICONIC KICKSDYLAN DOWNEYThe Puma Suede is one of our favourite sneakers of all time. For us, it comes down to the wide range of colours available. Puma offer over sixty standard variations of the Suede. From the more elegant black and gold colour to the pastel green, there is really a style for every occasion.

In 1968 the PUMA Suede was born in the town of Herzogenaurach in South-West Germany. The original design was simply a suede upper and rubber outsole. Their success in our opinion is all down to Puma’s ability to evolve the shoe and make them relevant to the time. In the 1970’s Puma re-created the shoe for basketball sportsman great Walt “Clyde” Fraizer of the New York Knicks. It was the first signature shoe named for a basketball player. Puma made the Suede a must have for any basketball fan. In the 1980’s the Suede became the original B-Boy sneaker. It hit the streets through early break dancing crews who all rocked them at Hip Hop jams in New York city.

It wasn’t till the 1990’s the suede made its way to the UK. As Hip Hop took off in Britain so did the street style. In the 00’s Puma created a trainer which was eco-friendly, to reduce our carbon footprint, literally.

In 2011 they also released the Suede Burner, inspired by street art, so treat your #FEETFIRST and get yourself a pair of these Iconic Kicks.

Available at Lifestyle Sports.

90’S FASHION

We just love 90s Fashion, from the oversized shell jackets and Ben Sherman shirts to the 501 jeans, the adidas originals and the stone washed dungarees. The good, the great, the bad and the ugly are back and they don’t look like they are moving anytime soon.

90’s fashion has crept its way into the fashion scene this year and the vintage shops are stocking up. I first got inspired by 90’s fashion when I was looking back on old photos and since then I’m hooked! My personal favourites are the wind breakers and the shell jackets, I think theyre so funky and cool, you can bring and wear them anywhere from chilling on the beach to hitting the town. I personally think they’re just a very vintage wardrobe essential.

Vintage shopping is great because fashion does get boring from time to time and bringing back the retro style of the 90’s to reboot your wardrobe works! Not only

is it affordable, it is unique and one of a kind, that is what I love about it. I love knowing that I am wearing something that no-one else is going to have, personal style is a must.

‘Be the one who dresses different that will be the one who people remember!’

I think originality is in everyday life but especially when it comes to fashion. Picking a style or an era (e.g 90s fashion) and making it your own, putting your own stamp on it by wearing funky socks or a wacky watch and having the techniques on how to wear and style your clothes, like rolling your sleeves a certain way, having your tee tucked in or out, and most importantly pairing your finished look with statement footwear or a pair of fresh trainers because -

‘An original is worth more than the copy.’

JOSH ST LEDGER

Fashion is a constant ….Style is what you choose….

Originality is you.

HIGH RISER

CAOIMHIN O’BRIEN

How often do you visit London?

It depends. Usually if I get a casting for a big job I will go over to do it. It can be difficult because I don’t want to go over too much as not to affect my studies. I guess I am kind of a geek!

What was it like to model for Jimmy Choo at LC:M ?

It was amazing. It was my first LC:M show and my first show which was of such a big production. I was thrilled to have got the opportunity especially because it was Jimmy Choo’s first show in the London Collections.

What made you take up modelling and do you take it seriously?

I think it was a mixture of things which made me take it up. I always had an interest in the industry and enjoy travelling and meeting lots of new people. Equally, I was told by some of my friends to give it a go so I headed to London and was signed by FM which is one of the best agencies internationally for men. I take modelling seriously but as I am also a full time student, I try to focus a lot more on my studies. I think if you take the job too seriously, it can really get to you. Sometimes it is better to just stay chilled.

What advice would you give to other Irish models trying to break the London scene?

I would firstly say that it is important to be yourself. Personality does play a major role as well as looks. On top of

this, if you would like to model in London it would be best to move to London. As a model who doesn’t live there, I miss out a lot on castings which often hinders the amount of work I can get. However, it is still possible to model and not live in London!

If you could pick any destination in the world to shoot where would it be?

I’m torn between somewhere like Iceland which looks unbelievable or Cuba!

Who is your favourite designer?

That is a toughy. I love brands like Burberry and Hackett but I like the edginess of brands like Topman and Lee Roach too.

Do you have an interest in fashion?

I wouldn’t say fashion is my vocation but I love art and aestetics therefore I think fashion is such a cool and fast paced expression of art which can be fascinating.

Do you have another occupation?

Yes, study study study! Luckily, I am on my holidays now. I also work in a clothes shop in town too.

Who are your icons?

My parents (very original I know).

So that’s it from our High riser this month.

Follow @MorgantheAgency over on twitter.

Dublin model Caoimhin O’Brien has been making big moves in the fashion industry. The 19 year old who is signed with both Morgan in Dublin and FM in London grew up in Terenure. The 6”1 stud recently bagged Jimmy Choo at London Collections: Men, which was a first for Caoimhin and the designer, so we wanted to catch up and see what was going on.

Stationed on Wicklow Street, Dublin is this palace of teas. An aromatic store with some of the friendliest staff in the city, a place where you can discover the finest leaves. We first came across this pleasant store when we were shooting street style right outside their front door.

We noticed that the manager Niall (who was sneakily photo-bombing our photograph) had unique style. We invited him out to get a snap and after that we got to talking about Le Palais des Thes as he invited us in for a cup of his finest tea.

Turns out this tourist boutique has stores in eight countries including France and the USA, with this store being the only in Ireland, opened in November 2008.

Some of their teas include flavours like strawberry and rose and we have to say, the free samples were very tasty. They also have tea sets, candles, tea ware and books available for purchase.

So make sure you drop in to Le Palais des Thes, if not for the tea, the customer service.

DAPPERDOTS!

JAMES BUTLERWhen it comes to prints and Irish men, there can often be a great divide- some choose to embrace their print of preference fully, while others avoid them like a patterned plague. For SS’14, the one pattern that prevailed on every catwalk, from Burberry Prorsum to Marni, was the polka-dot. Long been a firm fixture in men’s accessories, the polka-dot is now holding its own as a print on an array of menswear pieces, from shirts to sweaters and even pants. While the price points of some designers may leave us lingering in label-induced limbo, luckily for us, the elaborate polka-dot prints that dominated the runways for SS’14 have happily filtered their way down to the high street, where our favourite menswear stores have gone absolutely dotty for spots (pardon the polka-dot pun!)

When it comes to working polka-dots into our day to day looks, the very thought of emulating a dapper Dalmatian can cause some men to reach for their most classic shirt and chino combo before they even consider colour co-ordinating their spots. But, polka-dots don’t have to be that daunting. For example, why not try teaming a short sleeve, summer ready shirt with oversized spots with plain skinny jeans and box-fresh trainers? The look is cool and casual without being overbearing,

while still dipping into the trend. Or, if you’re feeling a little more adventurous and would like to try a more preppy look, tuck said shirt into shorts that are the same colour as the spots, add a cheeky sock in a corresponding hue, and you can turn the pavement into

an Acne fashion show! (And garner quite a few looks while doing so).

For men that like all the action to happen in their pants (in fashion terms, of course), let your trousers do the talking by slipping into a pair of spotted slacks. Beige chinos with a navy polka-dot print, for example, would look sublime with a crisp white shirt and brogues, and are an ideal alternative to the boring chino trap that Irish men seem to succumb to every summer!

Of course, for those of us who don’t want to fully commit to looking like a walking talking lady-bird, why not go for a reserved approach to the polka-dot trend, and use accessories to make your subtle statement. Cheeky accents

of spots in pocket squares, bowties and even socks can really lift an entire ensemble, and allow you to inject some fun into an otherwise standard look. When doing so, be sure to incorporate the colours that you have chosen in your accessories with the other items in your outfit, as such attention to detail will earn you some serious sartorial brownie points. This is ideal for men that are required to dress smartly for work. Wearing the same old suit on a daily basis can prove to be as boring as the business meeting you’re being forced to feign an interest in, so why not add a little sass to your day with a perky polka-dot tie and matching pocket-square? Or, if you’re feeling fancy, swap that boring pinstripe shirt for a micro polka-dot print version, and keep your accessories to a minimum. After all, a leopard may never change its spots, but who says your business attire can’t?

So, with these helpful tips in mind for our MFI readers, how will you work your daily dose of dots?

JENNIFER GLEESON This month in MFI we’re celebrating the man and his beard. What a better beard than that of our very own Michael Fassbender. Although half German, he definitely flies the flag for the Irish with his ginger beard and hair colouring. Fassbender is known for his witty charm, cheeky smile and fantastic style. It’s easy to see how Michael Fassbender has made it to our MFI Man of the Month.

It was in 2011 when he shot to over night fame becoming known for his performances in movies such as X-Men: First Class, Shame and Jane Eyre to name just a few. He was nominated for an Oscar for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role for his performance in 12 Years a Slave.

Michael Fassbender is a man with style. He has the ability to look effortlessly stylish whatever the occasion. He can transform from cool and casual, to suited up and premiere ready flawlessly. His style is simple. It’s smart and classic but also extremely approachable. Plain shirts and t-shirts seem to be a staple in his wardrobe keeping the tones muted in shades of white, blues, navys and blacks. He is minimal in his style choices, but keeps his casual look on trend by rocking the layered look.

“I suppose the German side wants to keep everything in control, and the Irish side wants to wreak havoc!”

This is why we love Michael Fassbender here at MFI.

DAVID O MALLEY

When did you know you wanted to be a fashion designer?

I guess that moment for me never actually happened. I never had the desire to do fashion in the slightest. Growing up art was the only thing that I excelled in going to school which led me to doing my four years in the National College of Art and Design. From my first year I got to study a range of subjects including fine art such as print, painting, vis com, textiles and fashion. I actually did my four years in Textiles because I found more freedom for creative thinking and trains you in other disciplines beyond fashion such as print weave and embroidery. It also helps when you have wonderful tutors in the textile department that fully support creative thinking.

How would you describe your brand?

The brand is all about modern luxury with a youthful vibe. The label is for everyone both men and women at any age. The materials include leathers, snakeskin, cashmere, ponyhair with clean tailored pieces and hand beaded embroidered one off pieces.

How do you produce and distribute your designs?

It’s a hefty process where it goes through a few steps. Starting off you really have to have a subject manner or reasoning, inspiration to kick start a project like this. Churn out a few notebooks looking closely as colour, shape, form then market research which is a major importance when producing a collection. It’s through learning about the current Irish and international market to know if these designs are functional and sellable. I was fortunate enough to be scouted by Design Centre Powerscourt town house. The guys there are amazing and have helped me a lot by stocking last years and this current season.

Where do you find inspiration for your creations?

Inspiration can come from anywhere but how it works for me is mostly through film and art. I find a lot of film noir, neo noir and horror films has a strong influence on my thinking and the way I work. I’m strongly influenced by film anyway and because of this I have had the pleasure with collaborating with young Irish film maker Samuel Foxton in the creation of my previous fashion films that has been spotted by Vogue fashion festival as ‘one to watch’.

What advice would you give to those moving their first steps in the world of fashion?

I’m just going to say – If you want to be for example photographer, videographer, makeup artist or whatever category, make sure you learn every single thing about that one subject and that will definitely mean doing courses and going through college and achieving a

degree. There are only a few people that can pick up a camera for a few years and they are naturally talented in the field but if you want to be fully disciplined at a subject at any age I think it’s really important. Lastly – you can’t make it on your own. The friends you made in college, the people that you know that work in the same field – you’ll need them big time. If you look at it this way – rather than just yourself struggling on one cause that’s going to be a losing battle, isn’t it better to have lots of people and then that one idea happen faster?

If you could pick any person, who would be the face of your brand?

I’d love to see Imelda May wear one of my pieces actually. Love her over all look and Karen O from Yeah yeah yeahs would also be a dream.

What’s your idea of edgy?

Pointy and sharp.

Twice a year we see one of the most anticipated menswear events take place just across the Irish Sea. London Collections: Men was introduced in 2012, by GQ editor Dylan Jones. It was after the success of the Men’s day at London Fashion Week that they decided from June 2012, that it was necessary to hold a dedicated event to menswear.

Jones stated that “Showcasing emerging talent ignited a strong desire for British designers and brands to have an event that reinforces the talent, the breadth of design and the heritage of this important British industry.”

So this time around we couldn’t deprive ourselves of all the energy and style that roamed the streets of London for the Spring Summer 2015 collections.

The event ran from Sunday the 15th June to Tuesday the 17th with the shows and collections spread across three main venues. When we first arrived at The Hospital Club to register with the British Fashion Council, we were overwhelmed with the welcome we received as an Irish publication. Four floors of ready to wear designer collections, the press and photographer’s lounge to recharge and the BFC Digital Screening Space.

A short distance away was the Old Sorting Office, which housed the Topshop showspace where crowds of paparazzi swooped on the dapper gents and fashionistas. The third venue was Victoria House, a London landmark, containing the British Fashion Council showspace, the accessories showrooms and hosting the NEWGEN shows sponsored by TOPMAN.

LC:M HIGHLIGHTS

DKNYOne of the most orthodox brands on planet earth held their intriguing SS15 fashion show at the Victoria Embankment in London on Sunday 15th of June. One Embankment was transformed into the iconic New York cityscape, imagery acted as a backdrop to a dramatic wooden catwalk encompassing the central floor space. Raw but refined, modern yet moody with a large panel digital screen displaying bespoke DKNY footage.

The night kicked off with two live presentations by DKNY MEN showcasing their SS15 collection. Real people and models alike took to the catwalk showcasing an alternative collaboration of faces with character and style. Faces included Rafferty Law (student), Joseph Brandon (musician), Tyler Wright (fashion/PR student), Clayton Pettet (artists), Daniel Bamdad (TV presenter), Ash Stymest (circus artist), and Tom Gaskin (music producer) who took to the stage to showcase the new collection. The London Model Eliza Cummings made a surprise appearance in the show wearing an androgynous SS15 menswear runway look and showing off her trademark dark punky cropped hair.

Next up we take a look at contemporary London-based fashion label KTZ. Inspired by the Greek Gods the KTZ troupe marched down the runway in the Old Sorting Space.

Opening up the show was Premier model Sebastian Sauve, followed by many familiar faces in the modelling industry, including Osh MacKenzie & Jacopo Olmo. The usual monotone collections got a surprising update, revealing over-sized t-shirts, gold chains, orange straight leg shorts and gladiator style helmets.

The brand’s signature athletic, boxy shapes continue to reign, equipped with accessories for Spring/Summer 2015, ‘Here is to the urban warrior that lives within us all,’ is the message designer Marjan Pejoski aims to convey.

After the catwalk we were welcomed backstage to get an insight on the collection, in which we saw PR expert Kelly Cutrone congratulate all the creative artists on an amazing show.

So enjoy our coverage of KTZ SS15 and a big thank you to People’s Revolution for all their help.

STREET STYLE

Over the duration of London Collections: Men, street style has been discussed as much as the shows. Roaming the streets of London, we were more than inspired by the fashionable attendees. Each location was crowded with paparazzi, snapping every detail that they could find. We saw some familiar Irish faces in the crowd, Brendan Courtney, Brian Conway and Andrew Scott.

TOPSHOP NEWGEN WINNER

LEE ROACHOne of our first shows to attend over LCM was winner of NEWGEN MEN AWARD Lee Roach. Sponsored by Topman the show was held at the stunning Victoria House with big names attending including Mr. David Gandy.

The collection consists of clean and contemporary pieces with a modern - day feel. A very nineties colour palette of white, khaki, black and red worked perfectly with his chosen silhouettes and key stand out pieces included belted khaki macs, orange panel tees and white denim shirting. Rather than constructing something complex, he allows the garments to speak for themselves and puts his attention to small details to transform the looks.

Designer Jeremy Hackett and founder of British label Hackett London put on quite a show recently at LCM, presenting some of the best SS15 menswear there is to offer.

One of the hottest tickets over the three day event, Hackett London is known for its presentation, choreography and detail. This season there was no exceptions as the garden party welcomed crowds of guests at the Honourable Artillery Company.

The 27-look collection was finely detailed and tailored, whilst paying homage to British sport obsessions such as cricket, polo and boat races. Double breasted jackets and tasseled loafers opened up the show and as it progressed, we saw stripes makes an appearance, channelling the polo inspiration Hackett took this season. Ascots and neutral colours seems to be the house favourites as they are found on many of the looks.

SHOW ROOMS

The LC:M showrooms were held in the Hospital Club just south west of the two main showspaces. Although the crowds swarmed outside Victoria House, the Hospital Club was basecamp. Registration, press lounges and martini lounge and terrace provided the space for rest and relaxation. The showrooms covered four floors showcasing designer collections from ‘Casual Tailoring and Resort’, ‘Contemporary and Outerwear’ to ‘Emerging and Streetwear’.

TOBEFRANK from the talented Frank Philips was an interesting start to the showrooms. The collection showcased the classic details of cut and tailoring but combined this elegance with hardworking materials. She explored fire resistant suits and drew inspiration from men of the past and military uniforms. Despite the influence of tradition, technology plays its part in the collection with 3D printed buttons and the ability to scan the label with the TOBEFRANK app and it will show you where your garment came from. This modern British brand is leading by example when it comes to transparency in manufacturing with all garments being handmade in London.

The lower ground floor resembled an underground warehouse space which housed the emerging streetwear collections. Innovation was central to many of the collections with new methods of garment manufacture being explored. Tigran Avetisyan played with printing onto fabric but employed the process at the end by printing directly onto the finished garment, which created natural bleeds and impressions in the clothes.

Established brands like Paul Costelloe shared the venue with up and coming designers like NEWGEN winner Lee Roach. Away from the catwalk, the showrooms are a great opportunity for the designers to meet press and buyers while they are experiencing the new collections.

LC:M HIGHLIGHTS

ORLEBAR BROWNThe presentation from Orlebar Brown for Spring Summer 2015 was eye catching to say the least. On an overcast June day, male models and their four-legged friends posed in the London Store window to bring the new collection, ‘Underwater’ to life. The new season’s inspiration came from organic coral patterns, underwater plant life and abstract shapes found in rocks and landscapes.

CORK CHOP SHOP

The barbering industry in Ireland has been progressing with talented artists rising all over the country. We followed one of Ireland’s leading barbers, Susan Farrell, as she travelled to Cork City to Bladez Barber to train and up-skill their energetic staff.

This hip barber shop has a young clientele that are always on the look-out for the latest trends. Susan, who has been barbering for over twenty five years, is part of the Irish barber federation and not just a trainer but also a career–coach. When we first entered the shop, we met the very enthusiastic owner, Lorraine Stout. We found out that Lorraine is transforming the back of the shop into a ‘chill zone’ whilst also getting involved with many festivals and club nights around Cork City, it was great to see all the models who attended the workshop, they really had a lot of support and respect for the Bladez team.

Check out the shots we took on the day.

BEST DRESSED

GUESTREBECCA O BYRNEUnless you’re off to witness nuptials of the Vegas drive thru kind, suiting up for a wedding requires quite a bit of thought. Finding a standout look among the sea of same-old suits out there no longer needs to be a monotonous or daunting affair when it comes to such momentous occasions. While staying true to your own personal preferences it is just as important however to step it up a notch in the style stakes in order to stand out from the crowd. And apart from the style and perhaps colour of a suit, we find it’s all in the cut and additional finer details that the most effortlessly stylish men find their inner Chuck Bass.

Three-piece suit, Remus Uomo €269.95White slim fitting shirt, Remus Uomo €40Matching bow-tie and pocket square, Remus Uomo from €7.95Tan shoes, Base London €95

SOME TIPS TO CONSIDER..• A three-piece suit, like this slim fitting Remus Uomo one,

silently screams out SMART like nothing else quite can. While matching your bow-tie with a patterned pocket square shows just how Chuck Bass you really are.

• If looking to keep things a little more low-key yet Don Draper dapper, you can never fail in a classic navy two-piece. Paired with a crisp white shirt, coloured tie of your choosing, and snazzy brown shoes for a touch of trend this definitive look is simply never out of style.

• An open neck shirt with patterned detailing is the ultimate way to play it cool yet dress up your slacks and blazer. Adding a little pop and perhaps earning some brownie points with your leading lady, you can complete your look with a coordinating silk pocket square. Posh and Becks anyone?

• Dressing for the day after is just as important as the main event these days and looking sharp yet preppy causal is key. Nantucket red chinos complete with a casual check shirt and more fashionable footwear than the day before will no doubt cement your place the style stakes.
