COURSE DESCRIPTION: Strategic management is a capstone, integrative course for graduating business students. This is an exciting challenging course that focuses on how firms formulate, implement, and evaluate strategies. Strategic management concepts and techniques are studied. Students use all the knowledge acquired from prior business courses, coupled with new strategic-management techniques learned, to chart the future direction of different organizations. The major responsibility of students in this course is to make objective strategic decisions and to justify them through a comprehensive business plan. Eligibility: Students must complete minimum of 30 credits to be eligible to take this course.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:At the end of this course, students will be able to understand the different elements of the Strategic management Process, perform environmental scanning, define competitive advantages, formulate strategies, and define the necessary changes for strategy implementation. You will also know how to design and implement strategies at the corporate, business, and functional level, while establishing controls for monitoring and assessing performance. Students will be exposed to hands on experience through a simulation package that will provide a personal and a team opportunity to test their ability.

At the end of the course, students will be able to:

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY POLICY:Plagiarism of any degree will not be tolerated and there will be consequences as per IUB Rules and Policies. Any attempt at copying during examinations will lead to either substantial deductions in marks or cancellation of scripts depending on the level of offence. School of Business, IUB, maintains a zero tolerance policy regarding violation of academic integrity.

Attendance: It is absolutely necessary to be present in each class, each class will cover significant amount of the syllabus. Attendance records will be kept. Absence without a valid reason is not desirable. Absences (as well as tardiness) will negatively affect your grades. Absence in more than 3 classes will lead to ‘0’ points in the final attendance mark. Tardiness in three consecutive classes will be considered as one absence.

However, the instructor reserves the right to add and/or subtract topics, or change the sequence in which they are covered. Students will be notified of all alterations to the course plan in class.

GRADING POLICY: The following scheme will be followed in assigning final grade for the course.

INCOMPLETE (‘I’) GRADE:Awarding of Incomplete or ‘I’ grades is strongly discouraged. ‘I’ will only be allowed for students who have a valid reason (ascertained by the senior management). In situations where the student is unable to complete the course due to unanticipated illness or family emergency and has not attended at least 75% of the classes held, he / she will be asked to withdraw from that course and repeat it. In unavoidable circumstances where students have completed 75% of the classes but are unable to continue (due to illness or family emergency), Incomplete grade of ‘I’ may be granted. Incomplete course has to be completed by the end of the next semester, otherwise grade ‘I’ automatically becomes

grade ‘F’. The student is not required to register for the course with “I” grade in the next semester.

WITHDRAWAL (‘W’):A ‘W’ grade means withdrawal. A student may decide to withdraw from a course by the deadline. Students must apply to the Program Office for withdrawal from a course with the permission of the course instructor, Academic Advisor, and the Dean. Withdrawal from only one course in a semester is allowed but the students should provide valid reason along with documents while applying for the withdrawal.

PEDAGOGYLectures: The instructor will use power-point slides during class lectures. Audio-visual content may also be used in some classes to supplement the lecture. Students are advised to actively participate in class. Students are encouraged to ask questions, participate in class discussions and debate during class.

Quizzes: All quizzes will be held on pre-announced days. There will be at least two quizzes, out of which the best one will be taken as final Quiz mark. No make-up quizzes will be taken. Regarding Mid-term and Final, the instructor reserves the right not to take any make-up exams without proper / valid reason, accompanied by proof.

Individual and Group Assignments: There will be individual and group assignments. For the group assignment, the class will be divided in several groups of 4-5 members. You will have to prepare a project to evaluate the service quality of a company. The report should incorporate topics learnt in class. Assessment of your report will be carried out through the group report (10%) and presentation (10%). Evaluation for the presentation will be on visuals, content and presentation skills. Equal participation is vital for all group members.

BLACKBOARD:In addition to class teaching, lecture PowerPoint, announcements and other information will be placed on the blackboard page. Students are advised to check the course blackboard page and download the required materials from MY SB: Log on to MY SB > http://www.sb.iub.edu.bd/student/student_login.php

AUTOMATIC WITHDRAWAL:A student can misses a more than 7 classes for a particular course. After that the course will be automatically withdrawn. Remember, the online attendance will be taken within first 10 minutes of every class. If any student comes after 10 minutes of starting the class, he/she will miss the attendance for that day and will be counted as absent.

GUIDELINES FOR THE STUDENTS:1. Attendance at lectures is VERY STRONGLY encouraged. Students who attend

regularly generally do better in the unit. Class role will be taken at each lecture

session so that the lecturer can get to know the students. Should any student be unavailable for any sessions, the lecturer should be notified via email prior to the class.

2. Absence of 6 or more classes without justifiable reasons will lead to “0” mark in that particular are, regardless of the students’ performance in other areas of the subject.

3. Quizzes will be held on announced dates. No make-up policy will be followed.4. Regular class attendance is necessary to pass this course & participation is

essential to obtain the allocated mark.5. Furthermore, on the examination day, as a precaution, always give extra time on

the road so as to avoid traffic and accidents.6. Any attempt to copy during examination will lead to either substantial deduction

of marks or failure of the course. 7. This instructor has the right of making any changes in the course outline if

required.8. If assignments are not submitted by the due date, a penalty of 10% per day will

be deducted from the assessment mark and after seven (7) days a zero mark will be recorded.

It is the student’s responsibility to keep appropriate copies/backups of every assignment submitted.
