The grey drizzly skies over Sonoma State University did not dampen the youthful excitement of over 400 students from 22 high schools a>ending the fourth annual Mi Futuro Symposium on Friday, January 11, 2019. Under the direcFon of Wanda Tapia, Tapia ConsulFng and Muse>a Perezarce, RN, BSN, MBA of Kaiser Permanente, Mi Futuro is a highly-anFcipated event that compliments workforce development programs in the county by highlighFng healthcare careers and educaFonal pathways for young promising professionals. In addiFon, Mi Futuro promotes mental health wellness among parFcipants and has an underlying message of social jusFce addressing healthcare dispariFes, and the lack of workforce diversity. Among the first-Fme a>endees was a large group of 28 pre-med students from Windsor High School. School counselor, Kate Fitzgerald, shared that these juniors and seniors from Windsor HS are enrolled in a Career and Technical EducaFon (CTE) health pathway that integrates core curriculum with health-focused projects and learning. Of those students a>ending from Windsor, 50% were the first in their families to plan on a>ending college and many are concerned about the cost limitaFons of conFnuing their educaFon. Fortunately, later in the a]ernoon, these students would a>end a workshop on Money & College: How to Pay for Your College Degree presented by Marisol Magaña Bright and Itzel Sosa Cervera, both 10,000 Degrees College Fellows. 1 Resuscitation Students have hands on experience with CPR Anesthesiologist Students learn what it takes to put someone “under” Surgical Nurse Students learned educational requirements, potential salary and tools of the trade JANUARY 11, 2019 Mi Futuro: My Future is in Healthcare Careers 2019
