EVENT GUIDEEVENT GUIDEOFFICIAL
Welcome to the one half marathon you won’t want to end.
A race so rock ‘n’ roll, the mile markers are rock bands.
Because what’s the point of running if you just want it to end?
Here, you might not break the tape, but the podium isn’t the point.
Life is a journey and running should be a celebration.

Dear Friends of St. Jude,
On behalf of everyone at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital®, I want to thank you for attending the St. Jude Latin Music Miami Beach Half Marathon.
St. Jude is celebrating 50 years of finding cures and saving children, and I am delighted to mark such a milestone year with St. Jude as the official benefiting charity for this event. The St. Jude Latin Music Miami Beach Half Marathon is a great match for St. Jude Heroes program. The event provides an ideal venue for both fitness enthusiasts and Latin music fans who want to make a real difference in the fight against childhood cancer and other deadly diseases. It is also an honor to be associated with race organizer Competitor Group Inc., which has done an amazing job of making this event a destination for runners everywhere.
I am deeply grateful to those of you who are running as St. Jude Heroes to raise funds for our mission. Thanks to the support of friends like you, we can provide pioneering research and exceptional care to children, continuing to change the way the world treats childhood cancer. Your generosity means that no family ever pays St. Jude for anything. I hope that you will stay in touch with the mission of St. Jude throughout the year by visiting stjude.org.
Get ready to Run For a Reason® and give the children of St. Jude the chance of a lifetime.
Regards,
Richard C. Shadyac Jr.Chief Executive OfficerALSAC/St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital

But in September 2011,shortly after Audrey started first grade, tests revealed a tumor in her chest. Audrey underwent surgery to remove the tumor, which was identified as an inflammatory miofibroblastic tumor. Audrey’s doctor referred her family to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital® for her continuing treatment and care.
At St. Jude, Audrey started a chemotherapy protocol. She has responded well to treatment, and is back at school. She takes oral chemotherapy twice a day and visits St. Jude once a month.
“St. Jude is such a blessing for our family,” says Marshall, Audrey’s dad. “It’s an incredible place that resonates hope amongst the darkest of circumstances.”

Reggaetón Duo Alexis y Fido
Fiercely loyal to their fans, aggressive and authorita-tive in their lyrical delivery, and relentless in their pur-suit of success, Cayey-bred Puerto Rican artists Raul “Alexis” Ortiz and Joel “Fido” Martinez, better known as reggaetón duo Alexis y Fido, have more than earned their “Los Pitbulls” nickname. Alexis & Fido were one of the most solicited artists by major labels before they were signed to Sony BMG. They were on 6 of the most influential Reggaeton compilations prior to obtaining a major record deal and in four years, Alexis y Fido have released 5 remarkable albums while remaining at the top of the Billboard charts ever since their first release in 2005. Indeed, they’ve gone from talented, under-the-radar performers to bonafide superstars with international selling power, establish-ing a highly marketable name and image, landing film roles, performing at some of the most exclusive Latin music award ceremonies, and scoring major endorse-ment deals with several marquis companies.
Though Alexis & Fido have been performing reg-gaetón since their adolescent years, it wasn’t un-til 2005 that they exploded into the international stratosphere. Their debut album, 2005’s “The Pit-bulls” debuted at the No. 2 spot on Billboard’s Top Heatseekers and the Latin Rhythm charts and at the No. 4 spot on the Top Latin Albums chart, eventually reaching gold status with over 500,000 copies sold worldwide. Their debut single, 2005’s “Eso Ehh!,” remained steadfast in the Top 10 of Billboard’s Hot Latin Singles chart for ten consecutive weeks and, in addition, was featured on an episode of HBO’s criti-cally acclaimed series The Wire and on the mega hit television series Entourage.

LaDoFaSiL LaDoFaSiL Band is a South Florida Latin Rock/Pop band formed by 5 musicians: Ricky Ruiz (Lead Singer), Sebastian Cruz (Drums), Joe Stamm (Bass), Javier Urrutia (Guitar) and Guillermo Na-varro (Guitar/Voice). The name LaDoFaSiL comes from a pun or word play between the musical notes in Span-ish (Do, Re Mi, Fa, Sol, La, Si). Ricardo Ruiz joined the Band as the lead vocalist along with Joe Stamm in the bass. With the best of the Latin Rock from the 80’s, 90’s and today, LaDoFaSiL counts with two different shows: acoustic show and full band show for all types of venues and events.
LA gENTE NARANJALa Gente Naranja started in 2008, when Eddie Garcia, Diego Saa and José Nouel met. The initial idea was to go back to the roots of rock and do something very raw and organic…that’s how they came up with the name. In 2011, Diego Saa left the band to pursue other projects and two old friends came along to give a new beginning to the band. Rolando Aleman on bass and Eddie Guzman on guitar are the new members. The band recently released a new album.
DANgERFLOWTake one part hip-hop, one part soul, add a dash of Afro-Cuban drum rhythms, shake well and enjoy. These carefully-blended ingredients make up the sound of South Florida’s most exciting & refreshing hip-hop band, Dangerflow. Dangerflow brings its hip-hop beat to the crowd with a cocktail of live drums, funky guitars, and jazzy horns. Led by both a conscious wordsmith and soulful vocalist, the danceable sound doesn’t come without substance. With influences that range from Gym Class Heroes to a Miami version of The Roots, the group makes sure to include an inspiring message in nearly every song but also incorporate humor and clever wordplay.

REFUEL WITH CHOCOLATE MILK GET SPONSOREDEndurance athletes, trainers and sports nutrition experts all know the importance of an athlete’s after. Every athlete has his or her own after-workout or after-competition ritual, and your After can make a dramatic difference in how you feel and how you perform during your next tough workout.
That’s why athletes – from the most elite to the everyday – turn to lowfat chocolate milk as part of their recovery routine. Chocolate milk has what athletes need to recover after a hard workout, including:
• A natural source of high-quality protein to build and repair lean muscle.
• The right carb-to-protein ratio scientifically shown to refuel exhausted muscles.
• Fluids and electrolytes – including calcium, potassium, sodium and magnesium – to help replenish what’s lost in sweat.
If you’re a passionate athlete who grabs lowfat chocolate milk as part of your After, submit a video and get your friends and fans to vote for you to secure a spot on Team REFUEL.
Explain what makes up your personal after-workout ritual – and the role chocolate milk plays in it – and you could score:
• $500 sponsorship• Top notch Team REFUEL training gear• Chance to compete for Team REFUEL at the 2013 Rock ‘n’ Roll Edinburgh or Madrid Marathon & 1/2 • Chance to star in a national “got chocolate milk?TM” ad
$1 will go to the Challenged Athletes Foundation for each vote.–Mirinda Carfrae,

Its climate al-lows it to keep a wide variety of animals from Asia, Australia and Africa like no other zoo in the country and the coolest part is the exhibits are entirely cageless. The animals are grouped according to their geographic territory and animals that live together peacefully in the wild are placed in exhibits together.
Miami Seaquarium: The Miami Seaquarium is located right in the middle of the tourist area, on the causeway between downtown Miami and Key Biscayne. It’s a fabulous stop where you can witness an outdoor aquarium experi-ence that’s only possible in our tropical cli-mate. Be sure to budget enough time to spend at least half a day there!
Beautiful Beaches: Miami’s beaches offer a great opportunity to get some exercise or just enjoy some time in the sun! South Beach is the quintenssential Miami hot spot. From shop-ping to partying, this area of Miami Beach is well-known for being a trendy locale.

Take a tour of Miami on foot during your warm-up or cooldown for Sunday’s race!
Run Like A LocalIn the final days before your half-marathon or relay, it’s important to take care of your body. Resting your legs is important, but an easy two to three mile tune-up run can help relieve anxiety while keeping your body loose and ready for the race. Miami Beach conveniently offers haute places for fun runs that are easily accessible to both residents and visitors. Check out one of these suggested paths!
Brickell key Walking PathSurrounded by water, this path is perfect for an early morning jog to watch the sunrise. With beautiful art along the way, you’ll feel as if you’re in your own private exercising para-dise. Providing unobstructed views of the water, there’s no better place to get your runners high.
South BeachLet the ocean breeze cool you off as you jog through one of the best people watching ter-ritories in the Magic City. The South Beach shoreline is one of the most popular exercise destinations around.
Oleta River State Park There’s nothing that compares to the simple plea-sure of jogging in a park. With its beautiful views, Oleta River State Park, located in Biscayne Bay, allows you to interact with nature and truly em-brace its beauty.
The Boardwalk in Miami BeachIf ocean views, beach breezes and sand-less ground is your idea of a perfect jog, look no further than the Boardwalk in Miami Beach. This wooden boardwalk was built in the 1980’s and spans four miles for a number of outdoor activities. The boardwalk is one of the most popular go-to spots in the city.

For many of you, this will be your first marathon or half marathon. Whether this is your first or fiftieth race, congratulations on your commitment to fitness and a healthy lifestyle! Whether you choose to run, walk or just rock, the following tips will help to ensure you have a fun and safe Rock ‘n’ Roll experience.
If you have questions, please visit RNRSportsMedicine.com, stop by the Rock ‘n’ Roll Sports Medicine Team booth at the Expo or visit one of our Medical Tents on race day. We would be happy to assist you. Have fun, be smart, and stay within your limits. In other words, Rock On…
TRAIN It’s too late to start now, but you need to respect the distance you’ve chosen to walk or run. There are many different training programs available to you. Be sure you chose one that had you complete at least 2/3 of the race distance several times during your training period. If not, slow down and participate at a comfortable pace.
HYDRATE If you have not calculated your fluid needs for this race, there are two strategies which will ensure you don’t under or over-hydrate. The easiest is to only drink when you are thirsty. If you want to be a little more scientific, limit fluid intake to 4-8 oz of sports drink every 20 minutes For more information on hydration strategies, please visit our website..
SALT Losing salt through sweating and complex hormone changes during exercise can result in lowering your serum [blood] sodium level. This will not only affect your performance, it may lead to muscle cramping, headache, dizziness and confusion. Have some sports drink along the course to quench your thirst, or follow your pre-planned schedule.
PLEASE Fill out the medical informa-tion section on the back of your bib number. While serious medical problems are quite rare, knowing any medical problems you have, medications you are taking or allergies to medications is extremely helpful to our Medical Volunteers. Our goal is to treat all of our athletes like Rock Stars!
