Peaks and Valleys By George Quinlan, Jr.
As they say, life is about peaks and val-
leys. The last few weeks have certainly
been that for us! I just concluded a two
year term as president of the National As-
sociation of School Music Dealers. Essen-
tially, this is a group that has gathered an-
nually for over 50 years to learn from each
other, compare best practices, and try to
improve our school music businesses.
Along the way, some life-changing experi-
ences happen too. Meeting in New Orle-
ans, we were able to get two of the mem-
bers of the “First Family of Jazz” as our
closing keynote speakers - Ellis and Bran-
ford Marsalis. As they told stor ies of the
Ellis Marsalis
Center for Music
Education and
Musician’s Vil-
lage, we were re-
minded exactly
“Why” we all love
this business!
They also per-
formed a duet of
“Sweet Lorraine”,
dedicated to my
mother who at-
tended the confer-
ence for decades.
I also was honored
to lead the 2nd
line parade joining
the “Storyville
Stompers” brass
band—what a great experience!
Sadly, we must also report the passing of
Ed Warren, a QF Rep in Michigan. Ed
touched the lives of countless musicians in
the area and was an ac-
tive judge in the March-
ing Arts. We were
shocked with the sudden
loss of a dear friend and
great co-worker. Some
of you may also have
known longtime Gemein-
hardt rep in our area, Joe Guth. The sad
news of his passing arrived a few days
earlier.
We were so delighted with the quality of
entries in our FB contest - “I Like My QF
Rep Because…”. It is really a marvelous
tribute to our QF Reps and the strong
bonds they build with the Music Edu-
cation community...makes me so
proud!
To celebrate the Grand Opening of our
Arlington Heights location and the 1st
Anniversary of our location in Lafa-
yette, Indiana, we wer able to offer
over 20 in-school clinics last month!
Thanks for the generous support of our
manufacturing partners.
Please take a moment to “vote” for me
in the “WannaBea” conductor contest
to support the Elkhart Sympho-
ny...easily found on Facbeook or
www.elkhartsymphony.net. Thanks in
advance, for your support!
Celebrating excellence in the field of
Music Education, we also proudly an-
nounce the “Class of 2015” in this is-
sue. Being nominated and selected by

Finally, we’re looking forward to a great
new group of beginners next year, aren't
we? Please encourage your current stu-
dents to be creative and enter our recruit-
ing poster contest on-line at

uted hundreds of “Join the Band” and
“Join the Orchestra” posters in the
schools we serve.
As we complete our 56th year serving
Music Education, we THANK YOU for
your support. We are so grateful to be
able to support the lives of over 150
families in our company working with
YOU in an industry we LOVE. We are
so fortunate to have strong support from
the brotherhood of school musicians,
their teachers, and the administrations.
Yes, we experience a few valleys along
the road of life, but the peaks are so
JOYOUS...enjoy your summer!

Q&F
The spring performance season is one of
my favorites because I have a perspective
I highly treasure. It amazes me how
quickly a school year seems to pass. Yet,
when I harken back to the events of the
year – fall recruiting, the season of holi-
day sales events and concerts, Midwest
Clinic, state music conferences, and now
spring concerts and sales events – and I
see the devotion and energy you all give
to your programs I’m sincerely impress
with your accomplishments. School
boards and administrations enable them,
but orchestra programs don’t just happen.
Orchestra directors make them happen
and you all are among the best in our
nation. Good work and bravo! It’s real-
ly cool to be here to help you all and I
count on you to let me know how I can
best do that. Each teaching situation is
different and you know your needs better
than anyone. I am here to use the re-
sources available to me to help you be
successful. As I said, it’s an opportunity
I treasure.
When I first started teaching in South
Bend, Indiana, each year I entered twenty
of my high school orchestra members as
a large string ensemble in the Indiana
State School Music Association contest.
My undergraduate training was in Cham-
ber Music and String Pedagogy so coach-
ing an ensemble to perform without a
conductor to excel in performance was a
driving force in my motivation to give
my orchestra students an opportunity to
attain a technical proficiency to perform
musically for an esteemed judge provid-
ed by ISSMA. There would be a local
contest followed, if your score permitted,
by a state competition in Indianapolis
usually the next week. The state level
judges at that time in Indianapolis were
famous names such as Robert Klotman.
Robert Klotman may not be a name fa-
miliar to many of you now, but he was
the String Education professor at Indi-
ana University and was very influential
and known for his national advocacy
for music in our schools and he was
influential in bringing the Suzuki meth-
od into the US. He served both as na-
tional ASTA President and national
MENC President. To have a group of
my training perform for him or others
of similar esteem was an honor I
strived to attain. But, you had to first
pass the local judge.
Here’s the reason for that story. A cou-
ple weeks ago I was invited to attend a
concert of the
Turtle Island
String Quartet at
Chesterton High
School in Indi-
ana. A director
in that district is
Tom Schnable. Many years ago, of-
ten Tom was one of the local judges the
for solo and ensemble competition in
South Bend. One year when Tom was
our judge, one of my violin player’s
string broke just seconds before they
were to start. Everyone in the room
heard the snap. The student looked at
me with a supreme panic in her eyes
and every one of you know how I felt.
It just so happened that my school was
hosting the contest that year and I had a
new string just on the other side of a
locked door in the same room we were
in at that moment. Tom said in his
resonant voice, “get a string Lloyd” or
something which I understood that it
was “ok” to quickly get the string
changed so contest could stay on
schedule. I hopped up and moved very
deliberately, unlocked the door, got the
string, grabbed the violin and went
about to put on the new string. Every-
one waited and watched me in action.
Then it happened. I mean, how many
times has any one of us changed a string.
Thousands. We could do it in our sleep.
But, with the packed room looking at me,
I got the shakes. It was obvious. It was
the A string too. You know, up there
under the scroll where it is so dark and
the hole in the peg is so small. As I strug-
gled, both Tom and I started to laugh and
then the room all joined in. I got the
string on but always appreciated Tom
being there as our judge that year. He’s a
good man. Once we laughed, I relaxed
enough to put on the string, the group
performed, and we went to Indy the next
week. Thanks Tom!
But, the real reason for the story was how
cool it was to be at the Turtle Island
String Quartet concert and watch Tom be
host to his community. The level of trust
and rapport he has with his public is
heartwarming and genuine. His lifetime
of investment in his community was ob-
vious and sincere. Few people have such
rewarding careers as we can have teach-
ing orchestra. Here is a picture of the
event at Chesterton offered as a tribute to
a good man and friend. Bravo, Tom!
For those of you starting your careers,
hang in there. The journey is well worth
the effort you put into it.

Amanda Jennings is a bassoonist and
a former band director. As print music
buyer for Q&F, she has the opportunity
to preview every new publication. She
will keep you up to date on the latest
new issue music and happenings in the
publishing world!
The Hanging Tree, featured in the hit
movie The Hunger Games: Mockingjay,
Part 1, sung by Jennifer
Lawrence’s character Kat-
niss Everdeen, is a haunt-
ing melody. In the movie,
this song is sung by the
protagonist and then used
as a grim battle cry to so-
lidify resolve in the uprising of the peo-
ple. The lyrics to this piece were au-
thored by Suzanne Collins, the author of
“The Hunger Games” trilogy. The melo-
dy was composed by Jeremiah Fraites &
Wesley Schultz of the indie folk band
The Lumineers. The piece is now availa-
ble for most ensemble types including
flex band – arranged by Michael Brown,
concert band – arranged by Robert
Longfield, str ing orchestra – arranged
by Larry Moore, easy string orchestra –
arranged by Robert Longfield, and an
array of vocal ensembles.
Uptown Funk! is a hit single featuring
Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson. This
song has an upbeat tempo and is slightly
retro sounding in a
“throwback” funk style.
With this songs massive
popularity, both Hal Leon-
ard and Alfred Music have
published arrangements
for this piece. Hal Leonard
has released arrangements for marching
band and concdert band arranged by Jay
Bocook, and two jazz charts; one jazz
chart arranged by Paul Murtha and an
easy jazz chart arranged by Michael
Sweeney. Alfred’s ar ragements in-
clude marching band and jazz band, both
arranged by Victor Lopez. The one thing
all these arrangements have in common
is no matter which one you choose, it is
sure to be a great favorite of players and
audiences alike.
Alfred Music also released Der Erlkönig,
a dark and spine-tingling poem for band.
Based on Der Erlkönig by Johann Goe-
the composer Scott Watson brings this
poem to life. Der Erlkö-
nig, or the Elf King, de-
scribes a father and son
riding a horse home
through a darkened wood.
The young boy is fright-
ened and cries out at all
the eerie sounds and
sights. The father tries to calm the boy,
explaining away all that he sees and
hears. In the poem, the boy sees and
hears the Elf King beckoning him to
join him in the woods. The father sees
only trees rustling and hears only the
wind. Yet, motivated by his son’s fear,
the father rides faster and faster home
only to find the son has died in his
arms. This haunting and tragic piece
will be a great addition to any begin-
ning-intermediate band.
Storm, composed by Soon Hee New-
bold, and published by FJH Music, is
sure to be a fantastic
addition to your con-
cert. The word "storm"
can hold many mean-
ings such as a furious
weather system or an-
cient soldiers marching
in a legendary battle. This piece is
written to represent the many meanings
of the word, so players can interpret
the music how they wish. This a grade
1.5 and is a perfect piece to introduce
students to programmatic music.
It was a beautiful morning, a day be-
ginning with beauty and a truly peace-
ful quiet. Suddenly, however, the un-
thinkable happened and the composer
found himself captured by a vicious
band of pirates. Forced to walk the
plank by the blood-thirsty crew, he saw
sharks swimming in ominous circles
below him. Of course, the story loses a
little drama when we're forced to admit
that the story is only his overactive
imagination, set off when his three-year-
old granddaughter came into the room
with an eye patch, plastic sword, pirate
hat, and screaming "Arrrgh!" at the top
of her lungs. Don’t let this misadventure
fool you though, I’m a Pirate, composed
by David M. Martin, and published by
LudwigMasters, is a great adventure that
you and the band will embark upon with
your audience. A truly enjoyable experi-
ence.

And now, for what all marching band
enthusiasts have been waiting for, Hal
Leonard’s Stadium Jams, Volume 10 has
finally been released! Arranged by Jay
Bocook, these shor tened versions of
today’s hits are sure to bring excitement
into the stands. The hits
featured in this volume are
Bang Bang (Rap Version),
Happy, Shake It Off, and
Uptown Funk. If this doesn’t
get the audience cheering,
nothing will. Go Team!
