Game Notes

Freshman PhenomFreshman attacker Sam Zetlin debuted in impressive fashion during the Wolverines’ opening weekend in Santa Barbara. Zetlin scored 10 goals to go with four assists and eight draw-controls, leading the team in all three categories. Zetlin also picked up six ground-balls which ranks third on the team.

Super Sophomore ShekerjianWith five goals over the first four games, sophomore attacker Ani Shekerjian needs just three more to tie her scoring mark from last season. Shekerjian’s shot is among the hardest on the team as opposing goalies are starting to find out.

Scheidt Making SavesSophomore goalie Emmy Scheidt continues to impress in goal, saving over 50-percent of shots against her in Santa Barbara. That percentage is even more impressive considering the strength of Michigan’s opponents in the Santa Barbara Shootout.

Drawing Even

After winning just 9 of 21 draws to open the season against UCLA, Michigan has found its draw specialist in freshman Sam Zetlin. Since the opener, Michigan has won 31 of 56 draws.

Milestones to Watch

Senior attacker Amy Johnson needs one assist to tie Alyson Gilbride (34)for second place. She is six behind Jane Friend’s program-best 39.

Junior midfielder Britt Boehm needs three goals to match Jane Friend (64) for fifth-place all-time. Boehm is five points behind Ashley Steitz (82) who currently ranks fifth in points.

Sophomore goalie Emmy Scheidt is 13 saves behind Liz Mennon (139) for second-place and 14 behind Jackie Fu (140) for the program-record.

distributes a monthly newsletter which you can receive by signing up on our website (www.umich.edu/~womenlax).

NEXT UPAfter today’s games, the Wolverines will take on John Carroll March 14 in a WCLL league game at Oosterbaan Fieldhouse. The game time has yet to be announced.

COACH’S CORNER“We keep telling the team we have to get better and better every time we step on the field. Unfortunately starting our schedule as we are leaves little room for fighting the learning curve early in the season. We go out there and face great competition right away. We have to go out very strong as well as get better with each half we play. Its a tough goal, but it is the best way to start the season and see what we’re made of.”-Michigan Head Coach Jen Dunbar

WOLVERINES HOLD CLINIC

Prior to its exhibition game against Adrian, Michigan held its eighth annual clinic at Oosterbaan Fieldhouse. Over 80 participants, ranging from middle school to high school levels packed Oosterbaan and were led through a series of different skill stations by the team.

PRESEASON FAVORITES

LAX Magazine has tabbed Michigan as the preseason favorites in the WCLL Division I North, edging intrastate rivals Michigan State. Michigan will face all of its Division I North opponents at home this year with the exception a trip to East Lansing where it will take on Michigan State.

Game #1

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Playing in its season opener, #5 Michigan (0-1) dropped a 12-9 decision to #10 UCLA (1-0). UCLA dominated the draw and took advantage of Michigan’s miscues to pull off the upset. The Bruins won 16 of 23 draws and made the most of their offensive opportunities as they unleashed 22 shots on goal. UCLA rattled off four-straight goals, opening up a 10-6 lead to start the second stanza. Michigan answered with a three-goal run of its own to get within a goal but UCLA scored twice and controlled the ball over the final five minutes of the game to earn the victory. Junior Rachel Killian, sophomore Ani Shekerjian and freshman Sam Zetlin all scored two goals to lead the Wolverines.

The Rams then scored three goals in the final 0:49 of the first half to take a 7-1 lead. Michigan started the second half with back-to-back goals to get within 7-3. After a CSU goal, Michigan rattled off another pair of scores. First Jess Stanley scored on a bounce shot and then Zetlin picked up her first of three goals for the game on a free-position. CSU responded with another marker to make the score 9-5. Zetlin scored two-straight goals to complete the hat-trick.
