Microsoft Lync Overview Microsoft Lync Server is an enterprise real-time communications server software, providing the infrastructure for enterprise instant messaging, presence, VoIP, ad hoc and structured conferences (audio, video and web conferencing) and PSTN connectivity through a third-party gateway or SIP trunk. Wireless LAN networks are seeing an increased use of Microsoft Lync for variety of use cases such as instant messaging (IM) and presence within a single organization. This includes support for rich presence information, file transfer and voice and video communication. The other major components are VoIP telephony and video conferencing through the desktop communicator client. Remote access is possible using the desktop, mobile and web clients.

With the increasing use of Microsoft Lync as a collaboration tool, companies will need the ability to detect, report, and optimize the performance of Microsoft Lync suite of applications in order to provide a superior quality of experience to their end users. In addition, companies that consider Microsoft Lync traffic to be mission-critical will likely want the ability to make sure it gets higher priority than other applications running on the network.

The Microsoft Unified Communications Open Interoperability Program (UCOIP) includes a Wi-Fi network infrastructure qualification program to test and qualify that all technical specifications defined by Microsoft are met and the solution fully supports all required features for Microsoft Lync. Aerohive holds CS2013-OIP certification for Microsoft Lynch 2013 Server.

Microsoft Lync Support in Application Visibility & Control With Aerohive’s Application Visibility & Control (AVC) feature in HiveManager, Aerohive devices can now automatically detect Lync traffic and report it on HiveManager’s dashboard. Aerohive’s AVC feature in HiveManager helps IT administrators to view Lync traffic usage across different users, clients, devices, and locations. In addition, it can granularly control and prioritize different types of Lync traffic. Any traffic that originates from Lync Client to Lync Server or other Lync clients can be classified and prioritized to ensure guaranteed bandwidth.

Aerohive’s AVC feature supports all major versions of Microsoft Lync including: o Lync 2013 o Lync Online o Lync 2010 o Microsoft Office Communication Suite 2007

Aerohive can also granularly classify and control the following types of Lync traffic: o LYNC_SHARE for file and desktop sharing traffic o LYNC_MEDIA for voice and video traffic between users o LYNC_CONTROL for Lync login and IM/presence traffic o LYNC for the remaining of the traffic. o LYNC_AUDIO* o LYNC_VIDEO*

* Note: Lync Audio and Video are only classifiable when SSL traffic is decrypted.

IT administrators can use Aerohive’s QoS Classifier and Marker Maps to prioritize the delivery and user experience of Lync traffic. This capability is crucial as many companies are deploying Microsoft Lync as the main collaboration tool for their employees.

Summary More and more enterprises are deploying Microsoft Lync as the unified communications tool for online meetings, instant messaging, and video conferencing. The productivity of the employees depend greatly on the use of Microsoft Lync applications for many companies. As a result, it’s imperative that IT has detailed visibility of Microsoft Lync users and often times, ensure that these users have guaranteed bandwidth over other applications to stay productive. Aerohive now helps enterprises obtain granular visibility into all Microsoft Lync traffic such as presence messages, voice and video calls, and desktop and file sharing.
