Microsoft Word Skills
Opening a File
1. Open Word 2. Click the Microsoft Office button(Very top left
hand corner). A menu appears3. Click Open. The Open dialog box appears 4. Use the Look In field to move to the folder in
which you saved the file5. Click on the file name of the file you want to
open6. Click Open. The file appears
Saving a File
1. Click on the office button (top left of screen)2. Click Save As3. Select the Folder in which you would like to
save it4. Give the Document a name5. Click Save
Once you have saved your document once any changes you make can be saved quickly by clicking the disc icon next to the office button. This should be done regularly so you do not risk loosing your work
Opening a Blank Page
1. Open Microsoft Word2. Click on the Office Button3. Click on “New”4. Select Blank Document5. Click Create and the new page will open
Bold, Italicising and Underlining Text
1. Type your text into Word2. Highlight the portion you would like to change3. On the toolbar you will see 3 Icons a
B – Bold I – Italics U – Underline
4. Select the emphasis you would like for your text
Cut and Paste1. Highlight the text or select the picture you
want to move.2. To cut the text use the scissors icon on the
toolbar. This will remove the text or picture from your document.
3. Move the cursor to the point where you would like the text or picture to be.
4. Click on the clipboard (paste) icon and your text or picture will be inserted.
Copy and Paste
1. Highlight the text or select the picture you want to move.
2. To copy the text or picture use the copy icon on the toolbar. This will create a copy of the text or picture from your document.
3. Move the cursor to the point where you would like to insert the copied image or text.
4. Click on the clipboard (paste) icon and your text or picture will be inserted.
Formatting your Font1. To change the font of your text highlight the text2. Click the down arrow next to the Font field. A
menu of fonts appears. 3. Move the cursor over the list of fonts4. Click the font name to select the font you want5. To change the size of your font again highlight the
text 6. Click the down arrow next to the font size in the
font field (if you hover over a size word will show you a preview of how the text will look)
7. Click the size you want for your text
Changing the Colour of your Text
1. Type your text and highlight it2. In the Font Field there is an icon with a A and
then colour bar underneath3. Click on the down arrow next to the A 4. A Menu of colours will drop down and select
the colour you want by clicking
Undo and Redo1. If you have made a change or a mistake you
would like to take out of your document you can do so using the undo arrow.– To do this click on the blue arrow next to the
office button in the top left hand corner.2. Alternatively, to redo something that has
been removed:– Select the blue circular arrow next to the office
button and actions will be added back into the document.
Bullets and Numbering1. Select the words you just typed. 2. In the Paragraph group, click the down arrow next
to the Bullets button . The Bullet Library appears. 3. Click to select the type of bullet you want to use.
Word adds bullets to your list.Note: As you move your cursor over the various bullet styles, Word displays the bullet style onscreen.
4. Inserting numbering is done in the same way using the number menu to the left of the bullets
Inserting Page Numbers
1. Choose the Insert tab from the top of the menu bar
2. Click the Page Number button in the Header & Footer group. A menu appears.
3. Select the positioning and style of number you would like
4. Click to insert
Setting Margins
1. Choose the Page Layout tab. 2. Click Margins in the Page Setup group. A
menu appears. 3. Select the size you want for your margins or
choose the custom option at the bottom to set at appropriate size
Paragraph Alignment1. Select the paragraph you have typed2. In the paragraph section of the toolbar look for
the icons
3. The icon on the left will line up all text with the left margin
4. The icon in the middle will centre your text5. The icon on the right will align text with the right
margin6. This button will make all your text line up on
both sides of your paragraph (justify)
Changing Line Spacing
1. Place your cursor anywhere in the first paragraph of the text you want to adjust
2. Choose the Home tab3. Click the Line Spacing button in the
Paragraph group. A menu of options appears. 4. Select the spacing you would like for that
paragraph by clicking
Inserting Pictures1. To insert a picture from clipart:
1. Select the insert tab2. Click on Icon titled clip art3. Search for the image you want4. Place your mouse over the picture you want and an
arrow will appear on the right5. Click the arrow and your picture will be inserted
2. To insert a picture from somewhere word1. Locate your picture2. Right click on the image and select copy3. Go back to your word document, right click and select
paste
Editing a Picture
1. To make changes to a picture you have inserted double click on the picture and the picture tool bar will appear at the top of your screen
2. Click on the text wrapping button in the arrange field of the tool bar and select how you would like the picture to look in your document
3. Using this tool bar you can also adjust the size and crop the picture to suit
Adding a Page Boarder1. Click on the page layout tab at the top of the
screen2. Click on the page boarders tab in the page
background tab3. Scroll through the list and select the style of
boarder you want4. Click on the one you want and press ok5. To remove the boarder, click again on the page
boarder tab, and on the left hand side of the dialog box select none and press ok
Inserting Word Art1. Select the insert tab at the top of the screen2. Select the Icon word art – with a blue capital A3. Select the style of lettering you want and click4. Enter the text you want in that style into the
box5. Press ok and move words to where you would
like them in the document by clicking and dragging them
Insert a Shape
1. Select the insert tab2. Click on the shapes icon and a menu will drop
down3. Select the shape you would like to use in your
document4. The arrow cursor will change to a t and you
then draw the shape by clicking and dragging5. Once the shape is inserted you can adjust the
shape and position like you would for a picture
