The new staff parking lot frees up spots for guests at our Café and office. We have some other big news about our Fowler Street campus! We have broken ground on an accessory shed which will house another walk-in-freezer. Only two years into our new kitchen, we’ve prey well maxed out our current freezer, so we are very grateful to be moving forward with this building. The second freezer will allow us to create our own frozen meals, giving us complete control of exactly what goes into the meals. At this me, we’re not at liberty to announce the primary funder of this project, but we are the grateful recipients of $50,000 from a well-known, community-minded company. We’re excited to provide full funding details in the future. Best wishes to you all for a happy and healthy spring!

Monday, April 1: All sites closed for All-Staff Training Day.

2019 Senior Farmer’S market

Mid-Columbia Meals on Wheels has traditionally administered the Senior Farmer’s Market voucher program for Benton and Franklin Counties. At this time, we’re still waiting to hear from the State regarding funding availability for this year’s program.

The Farmer’s Market program provides vouchers for low-income seniors to use at approved Farmer’s Markets. Although the income qualifications for the program vary from year to year, the program is for seniors age 60+ who are residents of the State of Washington.

Participants are required to complete a new application each year. To be included on the list to receive an application, please call our office at 735-1911. When the State releases the application, we’ll send it out to every-one on that list.

Vouchers are provided on a first-come/first-served basis, so it’s important to return the application as soon as you complete it. We’ll keep you posted!

What a relief it is that spring is finally here! We’re no longer obsessing about our weather and worrying if snowy conditions are safe for volunteers to attempt delivery. Although there’s no way to return our newly-gray hair back to its original state, we’re certainly feeling more optimistic and light-hearted here.

Our mood at Meals on Wheels has also been elevated by progress to our Fowler Street campus. When we built our office building and Central Kitchen/Café a few years ago, we were left with a giant mountain of dirt and rocks which was unsightly and potentially dangerous. Work to clear the site began last fall, and we now have level ground which we’ve covered in gravel, providing much needed additional staff parking. The new staff parking lot frees up spots for guests at our Café and office.

We have some other big news about our Fowler Street campus! We have broken ground on an accessory shed which will house another walk-in-freezer. Only two years into our new kitchen, we’ve pretty well maxed out our current freezer, so we are very grateful to be moving forward with this building. The second freezer will allow us to create our own frozen meals, giving us complete control of exactly what goes into the meals.

At this time, we’re not at liberty to announce the primary funder of this project, but we are the grateful recipients of $50,000 from a well-known, community-minded company. We’re excited to provide full funding details in the future.

Best wishes to you all for a happy and healthy spring!

4th Annual Breakfast Fundraiser: Our deepest thanks!

Thank you to CG Public House & Catering and everyone who joined us for our 4th Annual Breakfast Fundraiser on March 5th. We’re so grateful for your support!

This year we welcomed more than 300 Meals on Wheels supporters as we focused on how Meals on Wheels is “More Than Just a Meal.” We heard many testimonials of not only the importance of daily nutrition, but also the wonderful relationships between our volunteers and our clients.

We are excited to announce that thanks to the amazing sup-port of our community, this event raised over $32,000 for our program!

Special thanks to:

• Steve, Shirley, and Kyle Simmons of CG Public House & Catering, who generously supported this event by providing the complimentary breakfast, staffing, and venue.

• CG Public House Staff for their dedicated and courteous service.

• WSU Tri-Cities Chancellor, Sandra Haynes, for providing the Keynote Address AND serving as a Table Captain;

• Former Kennewick City Manager, Bob Kelly, for speaking about his experiences as a long-time Meals on Wheels Volunteer;

• McCurley Integrity Subaru General Manager, John Inman, for serving as emcee of the event.

Share the Love Results

At our annual Fundraising Breakfast in March,

McCurley Integrity Subaru presented their 2018/19

Share the Love Event check. Thanks to McCurley

Integrity Subaru and their dedicated staff, this year’s

donation totaled more than $27,000, which will

provide the full meal cost for more than 3,700 meals!

The Share the Love Event is an annual fundraiser

sponsored by Subaru of America and local Subaru

dealers. From mid-November to January 2,

customers who purchase a new Subaru can choose

one of four local charities to receive $250. McCurley

Integrity Subaru again named our agency as their

“Hometown Charity,” providing additional funding.

Meals on Wheels Attire

Meals on Wheels shirts, hats, and vests are selling well, and we’ve ordered more. If you’d like to support our agency by sporting our attire, please stop by our office at 1824 Fowler to pick up your Meals on Wheels bling.

Staying Hydrated for Good Health! Registered Dietitian, Jill Berg

Although we still have time before the real heat of summer hits, daily temperatures are rising and people are getting more active. Now is the perfect time to establish good hydration habits for good health. We hear all the time that it is important to remember to drink enough water. Why is it necessary to get enough water each day? Our bodies are composed of 60-70% water. Water plays a key role in regulating body temperature, transporting oxygen to our cells, and removing waste. How much do we need? The recommendation is to drink 8-10 glasses of fluid per day (64 ounces). Fluid can come from water, milk, juices, or other beverages. Other foods that are liquid at room temperature can also boost your liquid intake. Signs of Dehydration: Be sure to know the signs of dehydration. Even though thirst is an indication of dehydration we should be drinking before we are thirsty. Symptoms of dehydration include: * Mild headache * Constipation * Severe confusion * Dizziness * Sunken eyes * Blacking out when sitting up or standing up. * Strong odor to urine, along with dark amber color Tips and tidbits to stay well hydrated: 1. Get plenty of plain old water. Don’t like the taste? Try adding lemon, lime, orange, cucumber slices, or fresh rosemary

and mint. 2. Bottled water is not healthier than tap water. 3. Anything liquid at body temperature contributes to your daily fluid needs: water, juice, milk, gelatin, ice cream, and

even tea, coffee and soda. 4. Be cautious of calorie-containing beverages. They go down easy, especially on a hot day, but calorie-containing

beverages are a major contributor to the alarming increase in obesity in this country. 5. Even caffeinated beverages can help meet your fluid needs. The notion that the diuretic effects of caffeinated

beverages such as coffee and tea cancel out their water content was disproved by several studies. In fact,in 2004 the U.S. Institute of Medicine concluded that when it comes to meeting our fluid needs, caffeinated beverages appear to work as effectively as non-caffeinated beverages.

6. Make a plan to stay well-hydrated. Carry a water bottle with you wherever you go. Drink a glass of water every time you use the bathroom, or take a drink during every TV commercial.

So grab that water bottle and fill it up. Summer is almost here!
