The combination of Mid Atlantic, Howard and Adam have produced more international film and television projects in Hungary over the last 12 years than any other group in this marketplace. As a result of our extensive experience we have a depth of knowledge that is core to our services.
It begins w/the corporate structure by which an individual project is set up. These are very challenging times and each project has no choice but
to maximize the rebates available, accelerate the payouts of these rebates, - accelerate the return of Vat (which is always a burden to cash flow), minimize the impact of cross border taxation on cast and crew and develop bank financing options should they be necessary. We
constantly work to develop new strategies to offer clients and partners in respect to these issues. An example is the strategy we discussed “The Sale of Copyright” which gives all the benefits of a Hungarian co-prod w/o the downside of cast and crew taxation.
In the past 6 years Mid Atlantic has spent close to 250 M USD on production primarily in Hungary and more recently in other EU and non-EU countries. This has given us the ability to negotiate extremely favorable pricing for goods and services on behalf of our foreign clients. Whilst we always want to be fair to crew and vendors, we set price parameters (in co-operation w/the LP) favorable to the producer and work tirelessly to achieve the price point or better.
As discussed, Mid Atlantic key people are Adam and Howard. One of us is dedicated to the project full time and if necessary both of us can work on different issues simultaneously. While one of us takes the lead on a specific project, we confer constantly so as to maximize our knowledge base.
Every project faces issues on a daily basis from the start of prep though the wrap period. Mid Atlantic is available 24/7 to the producers, UPM, dept heads and vendors to work through the daily problems both large and small.
As discussed it is a fine line between assisting and intruding. Mid Atlantic will assist as much as it is appropriate w/o crossing that line. Mid Atlantic administrates the Hungarian tax rebate from beginning to end in house. This includes application/registration of the film to include the Cultural Test. Application/audit of the quarterly tax certificates followed through to the issuance of the actual tax certificates. Fund raising for corporate sponsorship followed through to payment of the certificates.
In terms of crew we have worked very hard over the past 10 years to turn Hungary into a freelance community. We have no exclusive commitments, but always have access to the top talent in all areas. Producers/Dept Heads will be provided w/resumes and we will encourage them to interview and check references as they would in any film center. We of course will provide advice and guidance as to individual strengths and weaknesses and will give opinions as to whom we feel is the best qualified for the job in question.
Regarding suppliers, we specifically have no exclusive commitments so as to obtain the best pricing and the best service on a year-by-year basis. Having said that from experience we repeatedly use many of the same suppliers based on their ability to give the best service and the best price.
