3. Afternoon Options

We offer Mid IB Afternoon Options on Second Subjects or on Skills of value for IBDP students.

Both types run 4 days per week, Monday to Thursday. For timetabling reasons, you can only take one

afternoon option each week.

Not all the options listed below will run each week - the timetabling is partly determined by how many

students sign up for each option. In the information below, we indicate the most likely weeks for each

option.

a. Second Subject Afternoon Option

These extended Afternoon Options give students an opportunity to review a second subject during the

week. They are not suitable for students who are taking these same subjects during the morning.

Inevitably, the morning classes will go into the subject in greater depth than these afternoon options and

they will be equivalent to just under 50% of the morning classes. There is also a questionnaire so students

can indicate where they need help. Please note that students may book Private Tuition if they have

specific needs that are not covered by the content indicated below.

2nd Subject

Biology

This option will review key items from the Core for Biology. This is the part of

the syllabus that is common to both the SL and HL programmes. Most of the

time will concentrate on Topics 2 (Molecular Biology) and 3 (Genetics). If there

is time, other parts of Topics 1 to 6 may be reviewed.

We recommend that students check the syllabus to understand precisely what

this includes. Students taking Biology HL may join the class, but must appreciate

that it will not review AHL (Additional Higher Level) material.

2nd Subject

Biology HL

This option will review key items from the Biology HL syllabus. Inevitably, it will

not cover as much as the morning class. The focus will be on Topics 2

(Molecular Biology), 7 (Nucleic Acids), and 8 (Metabolism, Cell Respiration, and

Photosynthesis). If there is more time, other topics may be reviewed.

We recommend that students check the syllabus to understand precisely what

this option includes.

Biology HL students should note that there is another Second Subject Biology

option - although this will not go into the AHL (Additional Higher Level) material

or Options.

2nd Subject

Business

Management

This option will review key items from the Business Management SL syllabus.

Business Management HL students are welcome to register for this course, but

should be aware that time will not be spent on AHL topics.

Inevitably, the course will not cover as much as the morning class.

2nd Subject

Chemistry

This option will review key items from the Core for Chemistry. This is the part of

the syllabus that is common to both the SL and HL programmes. Most of the

time will concentrate on Topics 1 (Stoichiometry), 4 (Chemical bonding and

structure) and 5 (Energetics/thermochemistry). If there is time, other parts of

Topics 1-11 may be reviewed.

We recommend that students check the syllabus to understand precisely what

this includes. Students taking Chemistry HL may join, but must appreciate that it

will not review AHL (Additional Higher Level) material.

2nd Subject

Chemistry HL

This option will review key items from the Chemistry HL syllabus. Inevitably, it

will not cover as much as the morning class. The focus will be on Topics 1

(Stoichiometry), 4 (Chemical bonding and structure), 5 and 15

(Energetics/thermochemistry). If there is more time, other topics may be

reviewed.

We recommend that students check the syllabus to understand precisely what

this option includes.

Chemistry HL students should note that there are other Second Subject

Chemistry options – although these will not go into the AHL (Additional Higher

Level) material or Options.

Although the option is for SL students, those taking HL, but who are struggling

with the basics of Calculus, may also find this option useful.

International

Relations

This option will help both students studying Global Politics and those

considering studying International Relations at university. Students will be

taught some international relations theories and have an opportunity to discuss

how these relate to global politics today.

Leadership The IB educates tomorrow’s leaders. This option takes a deliberate look at what

effective leadership is and how groups can become teams. You will learn

about leadership skills, team building, clear communication, as well as setting

targets and evaluating outcomes. The course will be useful for you, whether

you are the future CEO of a large company or the coach of a junior football

team.

Mathematics for

Physicists

This option is for those students taking Physics HL or Physics SL, but who are

lacking confidence in mathematics. The course will go over the main

mathematical techniques used in physics, give you the opportunity to practice

those techniques, and increase your confidence with formulae and equations.

Students taking other sciences for the IB Diploma may also find this course to

be of use.

Presentation Skills Presentation skills are valuable for work in the IB Diploma Programme in

addition to more generally. This course will give you advice on:

what you must do, could do and don't want to do in delivering

presentations

how to engage with your audience

how to build your confidence

The option will also give you plenty of opportunities to practice your

presentation skills.

Study Skills and

Time Management

Knowing how to organise your work in class and during private study is essential

for effective study, both during the IB Diploma Programme and beyond. On this

course you will explore how to:

take efficient notes and organise them for ease of reference and

revision

organise your time, your homework and other assignments

maximise your potential through the best use of your time

The IB Diploma Programme is demanding and requires students to be

organised. This course can help you to achieve that goal.

Theory of

Knowledge*

This is a central component of the IB Diploma. With this option you can:

increase your understanding of the knowledge framework and

knowledge questions in the ToK syllabus

develop your understanding of the assessment criteria

help you to develop strategies for writing ToK essays (not

presentations)

During the course, you are likely to work with ToK Essays from previous

examination sessions, but not those for the 2016 examination session. Please

note that the option will not focus on ToK presentations. Many students will

have already completed these in the first year of the DP. The separate

Presentation Skills option will support ToK – and other – presentations.

course account for 70% of the final grade. This option aims to:

clarify expectations for the three essays

show you ten skills that can be developed for essay writing

suggest further resources for building writing skills

* Please note that options that cover assessable components in the IB Diploma Programme (eg Internal

Assessments) are designed to develop students' skills and increase their understanding of the work

4. One to One Options

Students on the OSC Mid IB Summer Courses can opt for One-to-One Sessions on their Extended

Essay, on university and career plans, and in subject tuition.

These sessions are arranged around students' other commitments and incur additional charges;

they can be taken in addition to our Afternoon Classes.

Extended Essay Advice

Most IB Diploma schools require students to make significant progress on their Extended Essays

during the summer holidays.

OSC provides an opportunity for students to consult with a highly experienced IBDP teacher on

their individual essay.

If you need help getting started on your essay or want support in the writing process, the teacher can

help you by discussing the topic, going through the grading criteria and by giving you advice on

your research and your draft. You usually meet for two sessions, and have a chance to look over your

work in between. The teacher's total time, including preparation and draft reading, is up to 2 hours.

Your adviser writes a full report at the end of the consultation on the discussions you have had

together. A copy is sent to your school.

Please note that this consultation does not replace the supervision that you receive from your

school and must be acknowledged when you write your essay.

Please indicate the IB subject (Biology, Economics, Psychology, etc.) that your Extended Essay is

being written in when you apply. This helps us to find an appropriate adviser.

We will ask you to complete an online questionnaire a few weeks before you meet your adviser,

so that s/he can guide you appropriately.

Some EE Advice is given online - especially if we don't have a teacher for your subject on-site.

Personal Careers Consultation

OSC students can opt to have a One-to-One Personal Careers Consultation, given by an

experienced IBDP Careers Counsellor.

The session lasts for one hour and is scheduled during your free time.

A PCC allows you to:

Discuss your personal ambitions and explore your own career preferences

Obtain advice on the choice of courses available at universities

Find out how to obtain prospectuses and application forms

Find out the Diploma grades and/or SAT scores required for your preferred courses and colleges

The Counsellor will write up a report after the session summarising key points discussed and giving

recommendations for future steps along with courses and institutions to investigate further.

5. University Tours

OSC’s UK University Tours runs from Sunday 26th June to Saturday 2nd July 2016. Tour students stay in

Oxford University accommodation along side the Pre IB students. They visit colleges and universities

around the UK during the day and returning to Oxford every evening.

Mid IB students can take the tour in conjunction with any or all of weeks 2,3,4,5 and 6 of the Mid IBDP

Summer Course in Cambridge.

Why attend?

The process of applying to university or college can be very confusing and is quite different in each

country. On the OSC University Tour you will have the opportunity to hear from and ask questions of the

admissions officer in each institution. These are the people who will read your application form, so you

will be able to find out first-hand just what they are looking for.

If you know exactly what you want to study, then there are some courses which will allow you to jump

right in. However, if you are undecided or would like the opportunity to explore a more varied curriculum

before you choose your specialism, then there are some more open liberal arts courses that may be more

up your street. Either way, a university tour will really help you to understand exactly what is on offer and

if it’s right for you.

Parents are welcome to join their sons and daughters on the UK University Tour. We understand that

choosing a university can be a life-changing decision and realise that students greatly benefit from

involving the people who know them best, their parents, in this big decision.

Who will guide us?

You will be led and accompanied by highly experienced College Counsellors who will be available to

answer your subject choices and options during the Tour.

Sarah Cassell

Sarah has been working in international education for over 20 years as a teacher, coordinator

and counselor. For the past 10 years Sarah has delivered University and Career Counselling

workshops, conference presentations, and given family and individual consultations.

Sarah's passion is helping students find the right fit post-High School career path. Combining her

8. Location and Facilities

Cambridge, UK

Cambridge is a beautiful, elegant city; laid back and compact - but it packs a lot into its relatively small

size. There's a wealth of things to see and do against a breathtaking backdrop of soaring medieval

architecture, meandering alleyways and lush riverside meadows. You can wander to your heart's

content round open markets, second-hand bookshops, museums, galleries, tea rooms and of course

the colleges of Cambridge University. There are plenty of opportunities for sport too, with football,

tennis, punting, laser-quest, bowling, swimming, volleyball, basketball and even croquet all on offer.

Our Mid IBDP Summer Courses take place at Emmanuel College and St Catharine's College, both part

of Cambridge University, giving students the chance to sample the way of life enjoyed by students at

these prestigious institutions. Students may have the opportunity to experience both colleges by

studying in one and living in the other - the colleges are less than 10 minutes walk apart.

Emmanuel College

Emmanuel is one of the loveliest and grandest of Cambridge's colleges. Its illustrious alumni line-up

includes novelist Sebastian Faulks, John Harvard (yes, that one) and Monty Python's Graham Chapman.

Emmanuel's courts, gardens, lawns and lake provide a secluded and serene environment in which we can

study, socialise and relax, right in the centre of this lively university city.

St Catharine's College

St Catharine's, or "Catz" as the College is known, was founded in 1473, by Robert Woodlark. Originally a

small college, it gradually acquired buildings around and was largely rebuilt in the 17th century, with work

starting on the Main Court in 1673 and the Chapel being completed in 1704. The grand entrance on

Trumpington Street offers an impressive welcome to the colleges beautiful grounds.

An impressive alumni role call includes Jeremy Paxam (journalist), Sir Ian McKellen (actor), Tunku Abdul

Rahman, (Prime Minister of Malaysia) and Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed (President of India).

Accommodation

Every student has their own private single study bedroom – these are the rooms used by

Cambridge University students in term time. Please note that there are no en suite rooms in

Emmanuel College.

Let us know if you have friends attending the course so we can try to ensure you stay near each

other.

Male and female students live separately, to ensure privacy.

We do not charge any extra fee for your weekend accommodation if you stay for more than one

consecutive course/week.

Disability Provision

We always take health conditions and physical disabilities into consideration and we are happy to

assist in any way we can. We can organise rooms which are on the ground floor and near to your

classrooms if required.

Catering

Breakfast and lunch are provided Monday-Friday in the college dining hall – think Hogwarts and

you won't be far wrong!

There is always a good selection of food available, and plenty of it.

On the first night of each new course (Sunday) an evening meal is served to all students.

On other nights dinner is not included, giving you the chance to explore Cambridge with other

students and try out some of the local cafes and restaurants.

is required to enter the UK.

Important Visa Information

OSC students from outside the EU normally travel to the UK on a Visitor visa; a Study visa is not normally

required to attend our courses. You can get information on visa requirements on the website:

We can provide a letter in support of your visa application; however, prior to us providing such a letter,

your total course fees must be paid in full. Please contact us if you require a letter in support of your visa

application.

Please note that many Embassies take a long time to process a visa application - it is best to contact them

as soon as possible to find out about the procedures and make your application.

If a visa is refused we will refund the full fees minus a handling charge of £100, provided that the visa

application was made at least 1 month prior to the start of the courses. Proof of application date and
