President’s Comments:

VOLUME 30: ISSUE 8 August 2019

August flew in like a diving Osprey on a trout. It’s true that once you retire the

time seems to speed up. The Steelheaders have some great events this month.

Aug 10th is our annual picnic at Tom Pierce park. Starts at 11am and the food will

be served at noon. Please bring your table settings. Beverages will be served. Side

dishes are always welcomed. Don’t forget that parking is $5.00. The picnic take

the place of our general meeting. No general meeting this month.

We will be selling Salmon Derby dinner tickets & t-shirts and hats at the picnic.

Raffle tickets will be sold for the extra guide boats in the Salmon Derby. These

seats are not eligible to win any prizes. But you will have a great day on the river

with a professional guide and a chance to catch a salmon or two.

Our 24th annual Salmon Derby and Enhancement fundraising dinner is this month

with the dinner on the 22nd and the derby the 24th. Would like to thank Vikki Stra-

han who is our Derby Chairperson along with Linda Chilton who is our Dinner and

auction Chair. 100% of the funds raised will go in our C&R budget. Dinner tickets

are $40.00. We still need a few dudes to fish in the Derby, $300.00 a seat. Call Eve

Phelan our Guide and Dude Chair to enter.

Our Lake fishing program is going strong with our next derby at Lake of the

Woods. Email Jerry Frazee [email protected] to sign up. It will be at Lake

of the Woods on Aug 21st. We will have sign-ups at the picnic.

The Salmon are starting to come into the Rogue bay and we have a number of

club guides that support us and would like us to support them. They are listed in

the newsletter and on our website. Brookings area guides are also catching ocean

Salmon in large numbers. Andy Martin offers some great trips out of the port.

Our club river trips are starting this month. To sign up call Chuck Closterman our

Warm Water Fishing Opportunities

As the dog days of summer hold on for a few more weeks here are

some ideas for fishing that don’t include trout, steelhead or salm-

on. Catching stocked rainbows is great fun but adding a few dif-

ferent species can make your summer even more interesting.

SMALL MOUTH BASS: If you want outrageous numbers of fish,

including the occasional trophy-sized fish, the Umpqua River is

the place west of Oregon’s Cascades that can hold up in compari-

son to many of the world’s best smallmouth bass fisheries. Sum-

mertime anglers often catch 100 bass per day here and 200 for

someone with good skills, all day to spend and two strong arms.

Fewer but bigger bass are the springtime target. A 4-inch plastic

worm will catch smallmouth bass all summer long, but when that

water warms, Harrington said a curly tail will draw the most

strikes.

The Umpqua is loaded with bass from tidewater up to the forks,

and both bank access and boat launches are plentiful in most of

the reaches. It’s not uncommon for schools of bass to follow a

drift boat, just waiting for your next cast. The South Fork of the

river near Roseburg is also good for bass but is often too low to

float.

In addition to the Umpqua both Lost Creek and Applegate Reser-

voirs have populations of small mouth bass.

LARGE MOUTH BASS: Lake Selmac is the local go to spot for

largemouth bass. Lake Selmac has produced the state record

largemouth bass on three different occasions including one in

1991 weighing nearly 11-1/2 pounds.

YELLOW PERCH, CRAPPIE, & BLUE GILL: Local lakes like

Emigrant, Willow, Galesville, Denman, Agate, Willow and Squaw

Lakes all hold nice populations of perch crappie and blue gill. Alt-

hough these fish are small they have great tasting fillets. Catch

them on small crappie jigs tipped with nibbles or worms or if you

like to fly fish these fish are fun.

I want to thank all of the Steelheaders who have been so generous with their time and gifts

during this dark time. We were just healing from the death of our oldest daughter from

Pancreatic Cancer when we got the diagnosis that Ron too had Pancreatic Cancer. In less than a year, he

was gone too from the same illness.

Ron and I were just overwhelmed with the help the group gave to us. He was so pleased that we

had enough wood for the winter. He didn't talk a lot but was a very loving, giving man.

He worked very hard, 2 jobs at a time sometimes to help keep our family fed and clothed. He never had

a hobby and just worked very hard until he retired. He said he's always wanted to fish and

have a boat. Well, thanks to his friends in the Steelheaders, he had a wonderful retirement

learning to fish. Ron loved his boats and all the wonderful trips with the Lake Fishing group.

A huge part of my life is gone. We would be celebrating our 60th wedding anniversary

August 22. I want to thank everyone for their caring and giving to us. It's wonderful having

so many friends who love and care for each other.

Love you all!!!

Mary Portinga

Four boats with a total of 12 fisher-men (make that 11 fishermen & 1 fisherwoman, great to have you join us Eve) enjoyed a day of fine fishing, good weather (only a bit windy) and a fine bbq prepared by Mike Sim-mons. Several nice trout were landed resulting in a tie for big fish of the day at 12 1/4 inches between Jerry Frazee and Mark McCoy.

25 lb Springer. Cole Tidwell with Al Francis and guide Jesse Blair.
