Hugh Acheson's EmpireWith the success of Five and Ten, The National and Gosford Wines, Hugh Acheson is already a fixture on the Athens food scene. Now, Hugh is about to add Atlanta to his empire with the fall 2010 opening of Empire State South. Story pages 8-9.
There's a new arts festival in town. Hav-
ing raised over $80,000 in corporate sponsorships from Audi, as well as many Midtown businesses and residential towers, Atlanta's newest arts festival has also recieved a thumbs up from Mayor Kasim Reed. "I look forward to attending this new, signature event in the City of Atlanta," says
Mayor Reed. Created by Midtown Festival of the Arts, Inc., the event plan includes a family friendly kid zone, a Midtown Mile road race, a public art display and auction, and other festival attractions such as street performers, spoken word events and film presentations. For info visit:midtownfestivalofthearts.org.
Festival of the ArtsMidtown Festival of the Arts is coming to the neighborhood September 25-26 with works by over 100 visual artists

Pulling StringsAtlanta's Center for Puppetry Arts has no strings to hold it down
When people think of puppetry, they tend
to think of muppets or hand puppets -- some-thing that's just for kids. However, contemporary puppetry has its fingers in all kinds of genres including horror, drama, the surreal and even the risqué.
Midtown's own Center for Puppetry Arts, the nation's first (and still the largest) organization devoted solely to the art of puppet
theater, is a leader in the field. Their upcoming show, family favorite Rumpelstiltskin running August 6 - September 12, is our featured event this quarter. For more info, visit www.puppet.org.

New in TownMidtown's getting some hot new neighbors this summer. Here's a sneak peek

This August, CB2 will be opening its seventh brick and mortar location in Atlanta's Midtown neighborhood on the cor-ner of 12th and Peachtree. www.cb2.com

A Boy's DreamDrew Lewis is branching out with great new brands from Billy Reid, CXXVI and Mark Jacobs. With a major sale going on through August, now's the time to check out Midtown's best new fashion destination. www.drewlewis-atl.com
Unpretentious LuxuryThe city's hippest DJs, ultra-luxe 24-carat decor and a smoke-free speakeasy vibe make Aurum Midtown's hottest nightspot
Looking for a dingy, smoky club with rude
bartenders and the same old crowd? Then, stay away from Aurum. The unpretentious lounge with 24-carat decor (read: Aurum means "gold" in Latin) pulls off the swanky vibe without the noses in the air, and did we mention it's smoke-free? No more wanting to burn those de-
signer duds that smell like an ashtray the second you get home from a big night out. Aurum hosts a wide variety of the hippest DJ's in the city and is located in the heart of Midtown in the Metropolis building; it's got that hidden speakeasy vibe and is definitely cozier than the bigger clubs that can leave you looking for your friends all night.

Meet Marti KelefasMarti Kelefas has served as the Piedmont Conservancy's executive assistant for over 12 years
Q: You've worked with the Piedmont Conservancy for a long time. What changes have you seen?
A: The physical condition of the Park has improved tremendously. The Park looks lush and manicured now and of course, all the old dilapidated buildings have now been renovated including the pool, which is just fantastic.
Q: What do you like best about working at the Conservancy?A: I love being able to see the positive results of my work. Every morning when I enter the Park I see how beautiful and vibrant it is. It’s a natural oasis in the middle of the city and it confirms my belief in the Quaker saying,
“Work is love made visible.”
Q: Tell us a funny story about Piedmont Park.A: Once I was walking through the Park and a car with an elderly couple drove up beside me. As no vehicles are allowed in the park, I asked them how they got in. They told me they thought they might be lost and were trying to find the airport.
Q: Any closing remarks?A: If you haven’t been to the Park in a while, I’d like to invite you. You’ll be amazed by the changes, and by the time the North Wood Expansion is completed at the end of 2010, there will be an additional 53 acres of beautiful parkland to enjoy. For more info, visit:piedmontpark.org
Summer StrollWe had a blast at the first-ever Summer Stroll on the Mile this past June. It was fantastic to see neighbors walking the Mile, discovering pockets of fes-tival fun along Peachtree St., from mural making to food tasting, firebreathers, live music, inflatables and more. Here are just a few highlights:
Hugh Acheson's EmpireFood & Wine "Best New Chef" and owner of celebrated Athens eateries Five and Ten and The National, Hugh Acheson brings his small-town Southern flavors to the big city with a new venture, Empire State South, opening this summer at 999 Peachtree
Midtown Atlanta is giddy with anticipation
for the opening of Hugh Acheson's newest restaurant endeavor, Empire State South, coming this August to 999 Peachtree. Some of the beautiful flavors you'll find include succotash
crafted from stunning tomatoes, crisp sweet/sour sliced Southern pickles, and amazing woodsey chanterelles hand picked by Five and Ten server, Bob Fernandez.

Meet the ChefNick Melvin, the former Executive Chef at Parish Foods & Goods, will be the Chef de Cuisine at Empire State South
Nick Melvin got his start in cooking by pestering his mom in their Louisiana kitchen. Of his new ven-
ture at ESS, Melvin says, “As a chef from the South, it is a dream to work in a kitchen where the concept is pure simplicity at its best. Empire State South will be exactly that: a communal restaurant where Southern culture is exemplified and shines. This will truly be a great expe-rience for me and for the city as a whole.”

own brand of down-home humility to a growing community of local eateries committed to regionally and sustainably harvested ingredients. "Sure, Empire State South is 'farm to table'," says Acheson, "but the menu doesn't need to be littered with farmers' names to prove the veracity of the flavors. Good food is good food."
For a chef who has more than earned his bragging rights, Acheson is decidely down to earth. A four-time James Beard award nominee, chef/owner of two highly successful Athen's eateries, and winner of Gourmet magazine's "Most Appropriate Chef Tattoo" award, Acheson is disarmingly humble when he describes his cooking. "I want to be a part of my
community," he says. "I want to cook to comfort my community in good times and in bad. As a lot of chefs mature, their cooking gets more complex; mine
has gotten simpler."
Empire State South will offer a classy, but not fussy, dining experience. Clients can enjoy a game of bocce ball in the adjacent outdoor court
or pick up a takeout sandwich from the full service café in the restaurant's lobby.
It should come as no surprise that Acheson's award-winning tattoo is a radish, an ingredient best served warm from the sun, brushed with butter and sprinkled in salt, like the iconic Southern flavors you'll find at Empire State South.empirestatesouth.com
