Midtown MileDuring historically challenging times for both real estate and retail, we check in on the progress of Midtown’s most ambi-tious project, the Midown Mile in our feature story on pgs. 8-9.

Drew LewisClothing boutique Drew Lewis relocates to 935 Peachtree St., bring-ing the flavor of NYC’s meatpacking district to Midtown Atlanta

Drew Lewis owners Seth Kloss and David Gore

traveled the world together, working in fashion in Ja-pan, Sydney and NYC be-fore deciding to open their own boutique in Atlanta. They envisioned bringing the atmosphere of New York City’s meatpacking district south, offering Atlan-tans unique and hard-to-find pieces by top designers such as APC, Jack Spade, Gant, Caulfield Prep, Coo-per by Courtney, La Rok, McQ, Poleci and others.

“We wanted to give clients access to unique pieces that are hard to find in the south. A lot of times, we’ll only get four or five of a certain piece, and then that’s that,” says Gore. “We wanted to make sure when people come to Drew

Lewis, they know they’re in Drew Lewis.”

With free Wi-Fi and comple-mentary drinks, Drew Lewis offers a cutting edge shopping experi-ence.Follow Drew Lewis on Facebook (search ‘drewlewis’) for info about their grand open-ing celebra-tion (TBA) at the end of January.

Mercury Art Works has opened a

2,815-square-foot fine art gallery at 999 Peachtree in the heart of Midtown Atlanta.

Established in 2001 in Athens, Ga., Mercury Art Works is a full service fine art gallery that features a diverse collection of works representing local, national and international artists. In January, the

gallery will present School of Athens, a show high-lighting work by UGA’s Lamar Dodd School of Art artists Jim Herbert, Jack Kehoe, Richard Olsen and Art Rosenbaum as well as a selection of artists who studied with them or have followed in their traditions. Mercury Art Works at 999 Peachtree is open by ap-pointment. For info, visit www.mercuryartworks.com

The UPS StoreMidtown’s neighborhood ship shop

John and Vicki Kichko have been serving Midtown’s postage & shipping needs for 6 years now. Their The UPS Store, located just north of 8th & Peachtree in the Metropolis build-ing offers all the services you would expect from the nation’s leader in shipping. From packing and ship-ping to digital printing and copying, office supplies, passport photos, mailboxes, notary services and more, The UPS Store is Midtown’s neighborhood ship shop. But what really sets Mid-

town’s The UPS Store apart is John and Vicki’s commit-ment to great local causes, such as Emory’s My House, a local nonprofit that provides a home-like living environment for babies who are ready to leave the hos-pital – but have nowhere to go.

John and Vicki would like to thank the Midtown community for their long-time patronage. Next time you need assistance with shipping, drop by The UPS Store! www.theupsstore.com

Highland Bakery999 Peachtree brings a little Inman Park flavor to Midtown with the Highland Bakery popup store in the lobby

The Highland Bakery has been dear to the hearts of Inman Park residents for years. When 999 Peachtree’s Grand Cen-tral Eatery closed to make way for new restau-rant Empire State So., 999 needed a temporary food option to offer its of-fice community. That food option, a Highland Bakery popup offshoot, has been

welcome news to the larg-er Midtown community as

well. Drop in for cof-fee, treats and sand-wiches, or pre-order from their full service catering menu. The Highland Bakery plans to open a per-

manent Midtown location at 1180 Peachtree in early 2010. Visit www.highland-bakery.com for more info.

Faces of MidtownBy Jeffrey Mielcarz, midtown resident, music lover and on-camera television personality

I moved to the ATL about 10 years ago to work for The Weather Channel. Midtown was perfect and reminded me of the Big Apple (minus that godforsaken snow). My last job at The Weather Channel had me traveling to almost every state in America and no matter which big city or small town I went to, I was always excited to come back to the ATL for the weekend.

My hobby has always been music. In a past life, I was a drummer and toured in a scary metal band. I literally went around the world for a couple of years before I left the band to “become an adult.”

As for favorite Midtown eats - I LOVE LOVE LOVE Mitra

- can’t say enough about the calamari appetizer. Get it! For sushi and sake it’s Nickemoto’s. For their thin pizza, I just love Little Azio. And of course if you are looking for the best burger on the planet it has to be The Vortex without questions. Finally, honestly, if I just want something quick and easy I make a quick walk to Piedmont Park for a burrito at Willy’s to sit outside.

Midtown has changed pretty drastically in the last five years. When I moved in, there were a bunch of nightclubs between 12th and 10th. Now we have a Lowes hotel going up in addition to the newly opened 1010 Midtown, so there are even more places to shop and eat. I love it!

New On The MileCheck out some of the new local boutique shops, restaurants and art venues popping up all over the Midtown Mile.

BAKE SHOP: Johnathan St. Hilaire’s latest creation, a “true bou-langerie and patisserie,” is now open at 8th and Peactree. Treat yourself! www.bakeshopatl.com/home.htm

KAI LIN ART: This supurb gallery at 800 Peachtree Street features lo-cal artists. Through January 22, view work by SCAD professors, such as this piece “The Rooms Inside My Room” by Brett Callero.

SCIC Atlanta: “The riches of luxury incor-porated with the utmost functionality.” SCIC at 855 Peachtree brings top Italian kitchen design to Atlanta. The showroom features work by South African artists. Most consulta-tions are by appoint-ment but walk-ins are absolutely welcome.www.scicatlanta.com

MIDTOWNMILE

Midtown Alliance’s big, bold retail vision for Peachtree, the Midtown Mile, is moving forward with announcements from high-quality national stores and local boutiques even in today’s challenging economy.

~ Shannon Powell, Midtown Alliance

There’s one thing you can’t argue about Mid-town: The change has been extraordinary.

From the dicey conditions of the 90’s to the walk-able, urban cityscape of today, Midtown Alliance’s big, bold retail vision for Peachtree, the Midtown Mile, is undoubtedly moving forward. 500K square feet of retail space is already built, CB2 is opening this spring at 12th & Midtown, residential condo sales are up (thanks to aggressive pricing) and several extraordinary new home-grown res-taurants (Bake Shop, Empire State So.), boutiques (Drew Lewis), and galleries (Kai Lin Art) have popped up along Peachtree in the past year alone.

The vision for the Midtown Mile has overwhelm-ing support from developers and residents alike. “I feel strongly that it is our responsibility as develop-ers to brand our retailers as part of the Midtown

Mile - for instance ‘Drew Lewis at 933 Peachtree’ rather than ‘Drew Lewis at the Shops of Metropolis,’” says Metropolis owner, Jamestown’s managing director Matt Bronfman. With that kind of support, there is no doubt that as the economy improves, progress along the Midtown Mile will continue to pick up speed as it moves toward its goal of 1million square feet of retail in one remark-able, walkable mile along Peachtree Street.www.midtownmile.org

National brands like Crate & Bar-rel 2 share space on the Midtown Mile with home-grown merchants like Drew Lewis, creating a shop-ping experience that is unique to Atlanta.

Utrecht art supply store is a fixture in the Midtown neighborhood. The community-made paint-ings hung on the ceiling reflect the unique charac-ter of Midtown.

The Georgian Terrace Hotel’s recent reno-vations, which improved pedestrian access to Peachtree Street, exemplify the kind of improvements currently underway on the Midtown Mile.

New developments like Viewpoint and Spire blend residential and office space with retail and restaurant space, creating the walkable, shop-able urban cityscape envisioned by the Midtown Mile planners.
