I know that raises issues of who’s worship is the one we use, but even that conversation is fruitful. Why, as a community that God calls to love one another, are others excluded or feel excluded from the feast? Why are some excluded from serving at the altar? It is an exciting time to be the church; even some of my ministry colleagues can barely get 100 people in their church. It makes me wonder if ecumenical worship will be a part of our shared future? Is it already happening, as there are people that attend multiple churches? Or is it possible that we will become a united church, like in Canada, bringing together several denominations into one? One of the key symbols of faith for most Christians is the Eucharist of bread and wine. As we approach Holy Week and Maundy Tues-day, when we remember the Last Supper, my Presbyterian back-ground is bumping up with my Episcopal experience and stirred some wonderings about the meal and the church. As a Presby-terian, this feast is not part of every Sunday worship service at most congregations. It is done once a month and on special holy or feast days. Our Book of Common Worship, equivalent to the BCP, states “that it is appropriate that the Eucharist be celebrated

as often as on each Lord’s Day. It shall be celebrated regularly and frequently enough so that it is clear to all that the Lord’s Supper is integral to worship on the Lord’s Day, and not an addition to it.” At St. Luke’s, communion has become part of the rhythm of worship for me. It has become integral to worship for me on Sunday mornings. Be-fore you start wondering if I am converting, instead of converting, I have come to love ecumenical worship even more through my experience at St. Luke’s.

In planning a worship service for an event recently with a Quaker, Unitarian Univer-salist, Episcopalians and a person who meditates, the question of whether we do Eucharist or not came up. The discussion was intense and deep. The Eucharist is important to my faith and yet it is not to others, so do we scrap it in the name of the common good? When planning an interfaith or ecumenical service, sometimes it can feel like in the attempt to blend all our traditions we get liturgy that is unrecognizable to anyone. And then it came to me – do we need to blend elements? Each week as I sit at St. Luke’s serving as a Presbyterian minister our worship is ecumenical. Each week we have people sit in our pews who come from different traditions. Part of being ecumenical is our shared Liturgy, but being in community is the other part of being ecumenical. Worship is the work of the people and God calls us to fully be ourselves when we worship. Which leads me to wonder how ecumenical work could be differ-ent if, instead of trying to mix our liturgy, we experienced each others fully like I do at St. Luke’s? I know that raises issues of who’s worship is the one we use, but even that conversation is fruitful. Why, as a community that God calls to love one another, are others excluded or feel excluded from the feast? Why are some excluded from serving at the altar?

It is an exciting time to be the church; even some of my ministry colleagues can barely get 100 people in their church. It makes me wonder if ecumenical worship will be a part of our shared future? Is it already happening, as there are people that attend multiple churches? Or is it possible that we will become a united church, like in Canada, bringing together several denominations into one? Easter Lily Delivery - April 13Everyone is invited to stop by the Glenn Gallery after the 8:00, 9:00 or 11:15 a.m. services to select a beautiful Easter lily to deliver to a homebound parishioner. A special invitation goes out to folks with children – children can be spectacular ambassadors of the church! The name and address of a parishioner to visit is provided. This very meaningful St. Luke’s tradition is made possible by the Daugh-ters of the King.

Thanks to several generous donations, St. Luke’s will get some improvements in the coming months. First off will be renova-tions to the Hamilton Room - that may have begun by the time you read this.

This summer, work will begin through-out the second floor. The nursery will get a much-needed update and be moved so that it is closer to the Bell Tower stairway. The clergy and staff offices will be moved so that they are all in the same area with a more efficient use of space.

Across the street from the church, the parking lots will get a long overdue facelift.

During construction, clergy and staff of-fices will relocate to the first floor of the Quintard Sneed building.

Have a summer vacancy or know someone who does?

When the Training and Counseling Center (TACC) hosts its annual speakers event this month, the topic will be one that hits close to home: the problem of human trafficking and the exploitation of youth. A recent report finds the sexual exploitation of children is big business in Atlanta - to the tune of nearly $300 million a year. But those big bucks are dwarfed by the staggering cost in the lives of exploited kids.

It’s not a happy topic, but one that calls for the attention of faithful people across our city. There are ways to change this trend and to help those harmed.

Panelists joining the conversation include: Jennifer Swain, program director of youth-Spark; Bradley J. Boyd, chief judge of Juvenile Court; Carol Largent, retired Cobb County police officer; and Dorsey Jones, a survivor.

St. Luke's is planning to visit San Pablo Parish in Camaguey, Cuba from October 3-10 to further the development of our relationship with the members of the parish. The trip, which will be a work trip to help make re-pairs and paint the church building, is open to all parishioners and to youth who are in 11th and 12th grade*. Expenses are expect-ed to be in the $1,200 to $1,500 range per person, which will cover all costs. While we hope eventually to build a scholarship fund, there are no scholarship funds available for this trip. Applications will be available in April, and because very few members of San Pablo speak English, preference will be given to St. Luke's members who speak Spanish or are actively learning to speak Spanish.

If you are interested in going, there is nothing you need to do at this time but make a note of the dates. Applications will be ready soon!

*We hope to plan a summer trip some-time in the future when it is easier for our youth to travel, but we aren't able to do so this year. However, we do want to make the trip available to youth, particularly those who have studied Spanish and would like a church-related Spanish immersion experi-ence.

Nearly 2.5 million American kids have a mother or father in prison right now. Study after study shows that children with an imprisoned parent face severe developmental challenges that, if not addressed, can lead to lifelong issues, ranging from difficulty in maintaining healthy rela-tionships to an increased likelihood of being incarcerated themselves. Forever Family, the organization St. Luke's is supporting with our Fill the Basket collection in April, works with children whose parents are in jail. Forever Family's goal is to inspire hope in the children, to help them become successful adults, and to help strengthen their families.

In the Atlanta area, Forever Family brings children and parents together through family visitation to prisons. It is a seemingly simple idea but nonetheless requires a great deal of planning and resources. Forever Family also provides academic tutoring, Saturday programs, emergency assis-tance and referral services—all focused on the needs of children of incarcerated parents. They've established an after-school program to help the children cope through their interaction with peers who are in similar situations, and a teen leadership program, an empowering forum for teens to further develop their skills and help their younger “brothers” and “sisters” in their Forever Family. Each summer, Forever Family hosts a week-long camp that serves 60 children.

“A Dwelling Place for God: Recovering the Story of Creation, the Temple, and the Body of Christ.”March 9, 16, 23, 30, and April 6Does God intend to redeem creation, or just humans? Are we all going to heaven someday, leaving this earth behind to be burned up, as popular imagination has it? This series highlights a different vision, one that runs consistently through the Bible, from the story of creation in Genesis to the final visions of Revelation, in which God calls God’s people to “keep” and “serve” the creation, to render it a fit dwelling place for God, humankind, and all created things.

I will make you fishers of men.You probably already know the names of these men. You have seen Josh at the baseball field, Alex and Clay serving as vergers, Brian at adult ed or worked on a committee with Jonathan. But, why are these guys pictured together you ask? They teach Sunday school. And believe it or not it is a big deal to have men teaching, let alone almost one in EVERY CLASSROOM! Churches are fishing for male teachers and they aren’t biting, in general, at churches. So we wanted to take a moment to celebrate the diversity of St. Luke’s elementary Sunday School teachers and mention we need more great teachers to work with young kids. Men, women, adults without kids, parents, and grandparents are invited to join the team. Right now we need 4-6 new teachers this Fall, so this is the time to get involved.

Need more reasons to help in Sunday school? Just read the teacher quotes below.

Clay Stone - “It is immensely fulfilling to see the love that these kids show towards (co-teachers in 4-year-old class) Mary and Helen….Not just in the classroom on that day, but this expressed weeks, months and years later…Sunday School is not hard, but wonderfully fulfilling.”

Nate Conable - “The best thing about Sunday School is getting to know entire families at St. Luke's. It makes me feel like part of a larger community and like I can provide more value at St. Luke's even when I am not teaching.”

Jonathan Serrie - "Sometimes I forget I'm teaching 1st and 2nd graders because some of their deeper questions and comments are more what I would expect from a college level theology class. I'm learning as much from them as they are from me!"

From left above, Josh Bryan, Clay Stone, Jonathan Serrie, Brian Opsahl and Alex Sherrill. Nate Conable is not pictured.
