Presidents MessageSince the snow has finally melted it must be spring which means the 2008 Spring Meeting of the

Midwest Regional Chapter is fast approaching. Peter Thomford has planned another excellent program with speakers who will be updating us on new development and trends in toxicity testing. The meeting will be held as usual at the Marriott Lincolnshire on May 16th. If you haven't already made arrangements to attend I do encourage you to submit your registration form to Christina Wilson by May 1st as it will greatly facilitate our planning for meals and refreshments. Of course, if you are unable to finalize your plans at this point, please be assured that you are most welcome to register at the meeting. Additional program information as well as the Registration Form may be found elsewhere in this newsletter.

I would like to remind our student and post-doc members that there are several awards which are available and will be awarded at the spring meeting. The Young Investigator Award is a $1500 grant that may be used for any research-related expense with the only obligation that the recipient present an update of his/her research at the Spring Meeting the next year. Accordingly, Kristina DeSmet, last year’s recipient, is scheduled to present at this year’s meeting. Under the new format for the Spring Meeting adopted last year, the Young Investigator Presentation kicks off the graduate student/post-doc poster session. These posters are evaluated by the Council to determine the recipient of the Victor Drill Award. This award is to help defray the up to $1500 of the expenses the recipient incurs to attend the next annual meeting of the Society of Toxicology. The contact person for both awards is Molly Weiler, Chair of the Awards Committee.

The Chapter would also like to express its appreciation to Covance for sponsoring the Midwest Regional Chapter's breakfast at the national meeting in Seattle last month. What an excellent way to start the day conversing with old friends and meeting new members while partaking of a delicious breakfast. I am most appreciative of the efforts of Robin Guy (Past President) who made the arrangements for the breakfast and who has, once again, handled the planning with Marriott for the upcoming spring meeting. I would also like to recognize Charles River Laboratories which is sponsoring the break refreshments at the spring meeting. We are extremely grateful for these sponsorships as they keep the costs of the Chapter's activities to you, its members, to a minimum. On that note I would like to again thank the following organizations who were contributors to the various activities and awards of the Chapter in 2007:

CorDynamics IncCovance IncExperimur

Nanotox IncReid Patterson Consulting IncRobin Guy Consulting LLC

WIL Research Laboratories LLC

Presidents Message Cont.In closing, I would like each of you to consider becoming more involved in the administration of

your Midwest Regional Chapter. I realize that administration is the equivalent of a four-letter word to many of you and, yes, I know that the officer's positions do involve some commitment of time and energy but it isn't as onerous as you might imagine. After all, as many of my friends like to remind me, "If Don can do it anyone can!" Seriously, with the Chapter memory of past officers and councilors, the ease of communications now, and the considerable interest and support of National in its regional chapters, holding an elected office or being a committee member is very doable. So, if you would like to participate in your Chapter, please contact Robin Guy as she is finalizing the list of candidates for the spring elections. Let us also know if you would like to be considered for a leadership position next year.

See you on May 16th in Lincolnshire!

FinancesFor our Chapter to be considered healthy financially, we need to have 1.5 years of operating expenses in savings. We do not even have one year savings. We do not want to cut back on our programs and awards. To encourage a strong scientific program with broad participation, the registration fees for our Spring and Fall meetings cannot be priced to cover all the costs of the Chapter.  Thus, we need contributions from your division or department to realize our vision and mission in the Midwest.   Please help us continue to make the MRC-SOT a considerable value for you and your firm.  Christina Wilson, PhD, Purdue University, Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory, 406 South University, West Lafayette, IN  47907, Phone:  (765) 494-7440, [email protected]. Sponsors can target a specific event or item, or give a general donation.
