My name is Bruce Armitage and I am running in the Aug. 30, 2016 Primary Election for one of the three open seats on the Superior Town Council. If you are anything like me, when you vote, you want to be up on the issues and knowledgeable about the people who are running, so that you can cast your vote wisely. Since returning to Superior in 2012, I have become an active member of the community. I have been a Commissioner on the Planning and Zoning

Commission since February 2014 and Chairman of the Superior Airport Advisory Committee since its inception in 2015. I have memberships in the Superior Chamber of Commerce, the Superior Historical Society and recently became a lifetime member of the VFW Auxiliary Post 3584. I worked on the Superior Beautification Project with Robert (Beto) Cervantes which built the stone wall at the Superior Historical Society Museum and am currently doing some ground work with Beto for

a second beautification project at Besich Park. I presently serve on the Board of Directors of the Community Action Human Resources Agency (CAHRA) which aids low income families and addresses poverty issues throughout Pinal County. Now, let me address what I consider two pressing issues for the residents and business owners of the Town of Superior. These issues include: the need for Strategic Town Planning and secondly,

The Hispanic Leadership Institute (HLI) Copper Corridor has graduated its second class in the corridor last week. HLI is a leadership program operated by Valle del Sol, who’s mission is to grow strong leaders throughout the state of Arizona. The program was supported financially by Resolution Copper who was a premier sponsor and Salt River Project. Central Arizona College was the educational sponsor of the program and the Copper Corridor Economic Development Coalition (CCEDC) was the agency partner to the program. Several years ago the board of the CCEDC determined that economic diversification and success in the region would be contingent on growing strong leaders. The board decided to invest some time and funding to the development of a regional leadership program. After some research the board decided to work with Valle del Sol to offer their leadership program to residents of the Copper Corridor. Hayden High School Alum Carlos Galindo-Elvira who is the Chief Development Officer for Valle del Sol was instrumental in bringing the sought after leadership program to the Copper Corridor. In 2016, the HLI graduates are: Edward Aguirre, Kassandra Baltierra, Jessica Castillo, Matthew Magallanez, Max Magallanez, Gila County Supervisor Mike Pastor, Manuel Ramirez, Bryan Seppala and James Schenck. The cohort attended 10 weeks of classes which ranged on various topics of leadership including media relations, public safety, local government board service and the

development of their personal leadership style. The course also included a Saturday retreat. This year the HLI-Copper Corridor class set a new record for all of the HLI programs statewide. Superior High School Junior Kassandra Baltierra was the first high school student to enroll in the class and is the youngest graduate of any of the HLI programs. Kassandra was one of the participant speakers and she shared that the program helped her to realize her potential as a leader in her school and community. During the graduation the graduates’ pledges for service were read to their family, friends and invited guests. Castillo and Ramirez both plan to devote more time to their local organizations the Superior Optimist Club and Superior Rotary Club respectively. Castillo plans to use her leadership skills to continue growing the Optimist club and take on the role of president later this year. Ramirez plans to devote time to building the Rotary Club and developing a back to school supply drive for the students at Superior School District. Seppala and Aguirre both plan to devote themselves to continuing their education and using their leadership skills to make an impact on their career fields. Seppala plans to train other leaders in his community of Globe to help to take on the leadership positions he holds in order to devote more time to his education. Aguirre plans to focus his leadership on making a difference in the healthcare field. Matthew Magallanez, plans to use his leadership skills in his career as a probation officer and in his community and family. Max Magallanez pledged to focus his

Copies are now available: at the Superior office located at 165 N. Magma Avenue; via mail by sending a request to Arizona Water Company, P. O. Box R, Superior, AZ 85273-1917; via our website at www.azwater.com; or by calling the Superior office at 520-689-2312. The entire report is also printed in the newspaper today. The Company recommends that customers serving more than one housing unit post a copy of the 2015 Water Quality Report in a conspicuous place.

Your drinking water complies with the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s (“USEPA”) safe drinking water standard for arsenic, though it contains low levels of arsenic. USEPA’s safe drinking water standard balances the current understanding of arsenic’s possible health effects against the costs of removing arsenic from drinking water. USEPA continues to research the health effects of low levels of arsenic, which is a mineral known to cause cancer in humans at high concentrations and is linked to other health effects such as skin damage and circulatory problems.

Note: In addition to the constituents listed in this report, Arizona Water Company and ADEQ conducted monitoring for over 90 additional constituents and the results show none of those constituents were detected in the water. Data presented are from the

most recent testing done in accordance with applicable regulations. Some constituents are monitored less frequently than once a year because either their concentrations do not change frequently or they are not likely to be detected. Therefore, some of the water quality testing data contained herein, although representative, may be more than one year old. If you have questions about this water quality report, please contact Regina Lynde, Environmental Compliance Manager, Arizona Water Company, P. O. Box 29006, Phoenix, Arizona 85038-9006; telephone (602) 240-6860 or email [email protected].

In 2003, ADEQ completed a Source Water Assessment of the water sources used by Arizona Water Company’s Superior water system. ADEQ reviewed the adjacent land uses that may pose a potential risk to the water sources. The result of the Assessment was a low risk to the water sources.

The complete Assessment is available for inspection at ADEQ, 1110 West Washington Street, Phoenix, Arizona 85007, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Electronic copies are available from ADEQ at [email protected]. For more information, visit ADEQ’s Source Water Assessment and Protection Unit website at: www.azdeq.gov/environ/water/dw/swap.html.

SUPERIOR POLICE REPORTContinued from page 2

the relationship between the Town of Superior and Resolution Copper Company (RCC). The first issue is the larger matter of Strategic Town Planning. This issue encompasses the development of a new short and long term Strategic Town Plan, a Financial Plan of Action, and a plan for the Town’s Infrastructure. Without significant strategic Town planning, the Town is much like a ship without a rudder. We are currently operating on an outdated 20-year plan. We urgently need a fresh strategic Town plan, created with community involvement. A growing successful community knows where it’s going and how it’s going to get there. What do we want our Town to look like in the short, mid and long terms and what steps do we need to take to make that happen? How do we finance these goals and objectives? We need answers to these important questions in order to have a clear and realistic path into the future. Likewise we must take a hands-on approach to identify current

and future priorities. Major concerns for our Town are business retention and expansion, and business attraction. Strategic planning does not merely identify Superior’s special resources but it decides how to develop and then promote these exceptional assets. An important aspect of a strategic plan is the need for a Financial Plan of Action. A financial plan of action basically consists of projected expenditures, based upon the Strategic Plan and the Town’s potential to identify the income needed to cover those expenditures. Financial sustainability won’t just fall into our lap. Deliberate planning is required to help define the Town’s objectives as well as prioritize the actions needed to accomplish them. Knowing how to manage our resources is essential to achieving financial sustainability. We must judiciously administer the Towns finances so as to make the most of our resources while ensuring improved quality of life in Superior. As a part of Strategic Town Planning, we must address

the Towns Infrastructure. Infrastructure includes roads, public works and their equipment, schools, public buildings, airports, power supplies and sewer systems. Let’s face it, Superior’s infrastructure is old and getting older by the day. Because we currently don’t have sufficient funds to modernize our infrastructure, we must make the most of our existing assets until additional funds become available. Basically we must do more with less and be smarter about how we spend our dollars. As a community with limited resources, modernizing our infrastructure will require planning and vision as we move forward. Simply stated, as a Town we don’t have a current, viable plan for our future growth. If we ever expect to have a bright and prosperous future we must map out a realistic strategic Town plan. We must also strengthen our relationship with entities like the Chamber of Commerce, and other forward thinking small and large businesses. The second issue concerns

the relationship between the Town of Superior and RCC. There is no question that a large majority of the Town’s people support RCC. I, unashamedly, am one of those people who is a strong supporter of the copper mining industry. We are, after all, a community that was built primarily on that business. That being said, I don’t believe that we should rubber stamp every RCC item that comes before the Town Council. Every issue, no matter how minor, needs to be thoroughly vetted by the Town leadership to determine both intended and unintended consequences. As your councilman, I commit to thoroughly reviewing every mining issue that comes before the Council to ensure that as we proceed, we are doing what is best for the Town of Superior. I also commit to reestablishing a constructive and healthy business relationship with RCC. As your councilman, I will be committed to working for you, the people of Superior, with an eye towards bringing about a bright and prosperous

future. Superior is on the cusp of re-establishing itself on the road to significant prominence in the Copper Triangle. When the Town prospers, and I believe it will, the people who call Superior home will have an improved quality of life. Together we can watch the Town of Superior become the next All American Town. I earnestly ask for your vote in the Aug. 30, 2016 Primary Election. /s/ Bruce ArmitageEditor’s Note: Read Mr. Armitage’s full letter online at www.copperarea.com.

16 | Superior Sun www.copperarea.com June 22, 2016

In 2004 Michael Alvarez began commuting from his home in Mesa to a job at Resolution Copper. A graduate of the Superior High School class of

1991 he had seen the ups and downs of Superior but on his daily commute on Magma Avenue to his job at Resolution Copper he saw an opportunity. A set of small cottages that were owned by his cousin and still in the family sat vacant and boarded up. He began talking to his cousin about a potential business opportunity to offer short term or long term rentals on the tiny homes. After years of careful remodeling and interior design the Copper Cottages were opened. The furnished homes are available for both short term and long term rentals. The decision to open the rentals grew another business venture idea for Michael and his relatives they have decided to expand into jeep tours, ATV and bike rentals. They anticipate opening that business later this year, just in time for the busy winter visitor season. Michael explained that he opened these businesses knowing that the full demand has not quite hit the local economy yet, but he sees the potential for the growth of these businesses as the community becomes more of a destination with the opening of the Magma Hotel, garden expansion at Boyce Thompson Arboretum and the overall marketing of the community through the events and festivals that are growing in Superior. Soon Michael will become an empty nester and he plans to make Superior his full time home and devote more time to the expansion of his business which will include a store front on Main Street, transportation services similar to a taxi and shuttle service to and from the airport and into the valley. Michael’s business partner and cousin Steven Lopez who is also planning on relocating to Superior from Whittier, California will be working diligently to expand their services. They are also assisted by local resident David Lopez who helps with the day to day operations of the company. Michael’s advice to his fellow business owners and budding entrepreneurs: “Make sure you are comfortable with your plan, pace yourself and most importantly write down your dreams and goals to set your vision”.
