OBITUARY

The Superior Chamber of Commerce hosted Mural Madness this past weekend. The event included the sale of a special map that highlighted the many murals in Superior, live art and mural demonstrations and a special painted rock scavenger hunt. Residents and visitors

enjoyed a self guided tour and lots of open air activities. The sidewalks, restaurants and retail shops were busy throughout the weekend and many commented that parking was scarce. Weekends in Superior have proved to be very busy,

especially following the airing of the Arizona Highways episode on Superior. Resolution Copper provided the funding for the sponsorship of the television show. If you haven’t seen it, you can find it online at: http://bit.ly/AZHwysSupie.

SUPERIOR POLICE REPORTContinued from page 2

By Nathaniel A. LopezSuperior Sun

Superior High School, like many other schools, has faced a strange year in sports. After the AIA decided to resume winter sports, most schools went back to playing sports. Some schools decided to wait it out and not participate in the winter season. In an effort to protect their students, faculty, and community, Superior High School decided to abstain from participating in the winter season. COVID-19 has taken a toll on everyone, including the senior student-athletes that were unable to participate in the winter season. To understand the effect it has had on them, we must understand what it means to be a student-athlete for Superior High School. “Being a student athlete at Superior High School, you represent the town of Superior and the school. You need to be a leader on and off the field, and play because you want to win and work hard to achieve your goal,” said senior Nathan Duarte. Alyssa Bailey describes being a student-athlete as, putting her heart into everything, school and sports. “Personally, COVID-19 has affected me a lot. It has changed everything for me, and has taught me how to value everything in

life before it’s too late,” Jasmine Lopez comments on how COVID-19 has affected her school year. Adam Navarrette recalls being bummed out by the short football season, and the cancelation of the basketball season. “This sports season brought a lot of sadness to me. I couldn’t spend my senior year with my classmates, as I should have,” said Bailey. “Looking back, I am glad that I was there to cheer for the football team, and be a shoulder for my team to lean on. Though it isn’t how I wanted to spend my senior cheer season, the memories I made will surely last a lifetime.” Although there has been so much change throughout the times of COVID, the student-athletes of Superior High School still are full of hope. Nathan Duarte hopes that the a widespread vaccine will be available for everyone, so people can be safer, and the juniors through freshman can have a normal year. “My only hope is to have a baseball season, because I know we have a good chance at winning it all this year,” Navarrette said. “I just hope that I can have a somewhat normal graduation,” said Bailey. “I want to be able to walk down the field with my class for the last time. That’s all I ask for.”

In April, COVID-19 brought much of Arizona’s economy to a screeching halt. All businesses not deemed “essential”

were ordered closed by Arizona’s governor Doug Ducey. The lockdown continued for nearly two months. When Gov. Ducey finally gave the go ahead to reopen, businesses slowly began the road to recovery. Even those listed as “essential” had a challenge with this economic recovery. Many small businesses and non-profits in Arizona didn’t survive the lockdown. The businesses that did survive are hanging on as best they can. Copper Area News wanted to give something back to the local business community. Over the next several weeks, our

newspapers (Copper Basin News, Superior Sun and San Manuel Miner) will be featuring local businesses and non-profits, encouraging our readers to Shop at Home, stay local and support our local businesses. To date, Copper Area News has featured 36 businesses in the Copper Corridor. It is hard enough making it as a small business in a small town during normal times. But to balance those difficulties during a pandemic adds an entirely different twist to things. Restaurants were among the hardest hit by the shutdown. The Jade Grill Asian BBQ restaurant has a rich history in Superior. Lucy Wing and her brothers and sisters decided that they wanted to give back to their home town by

opening the Jade Grill restaurant located at 639 US 60. Lucy who is a respected and renowned food editor for Harpers Magazine is the primary family member responsible for the day to day operations and food preparation. Like the rest of the restaurant industry, the Jade Grill experienced many challenges and one in particular was the small size of the restaurant space, which restricted in-person dining, with the lack of events the pandemic hurt catering business as well as use of the upstairs balcony for events. The Jade Grill features many traditional Asian foods such as orange chicken, egg roles, fried rice and kung pow chicken, in addition to those more common favorites,

there is Vietnamese Beef Wraps, Ribs, Teriyaki Chicken and many fresh and hearty salads and sandwiches . Dishes such as the beef wraps, teriyaki chicken and ribs all are made with grilled and smoked meats, which adds depth to the flavors. If you are looking to fill a sweet tooth, order the rice pudding or zesty pineapple desert. Each menu item is prepared fresh, and in many dishes, the vegetables and herbs come from local gardens. The Jade Grill can also offer catering for larger meals and can prepare a variety of cuisines. Jade Grill is open Wednesday through Saturdays. Hours are 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. for lunch and 5-7:30 p.m. for dinner. Call for take out orders: 520-689-2885.
