TREASURES & SECRETS IN MILAN by Rinascente

Milano is the city of fashion, business and design. But it is also a place full of hidden treasures awaiting to be discovered. This itinerary in 10 steps will lead you to places telling stories and unveiling secrets. Wether you are a citizen or a new comer on a tight schedule, you can experience an authentic touch of this frenzy city.

THE LIBERTY STATUE ON THE DUOMO FACADEThe Duomo has about 3400 statues! There are monsters and children, Saints and martyrs. Above the main entrance on the left you can see a liberty statue by C. Pacetti,1810. French sculptor F.A.Bartholdi took inspiration for his Liberty Statue donated to New York City in 1885.

PIAZZA DEI MERCANTIPiazza dei Mercanti is the medieval Stock Exchange Market. It is one of the oldest part of town almost above the crossing of cardo and decumano. Under the arcade there is a game that two people can play: each has to stand inside facing the colomn on the corner, if you wisper, the person standing on the diagonal opposite side will hear you.

PALAZZO DELLA BORSA DI MILANO AND THE ROMAN THEATREPalazzo Mezzanotte is the headquarter of Milano Stock Exchange. In the main square L.O.V.E. libertà, odio, vendetta, eternità (freedom, hate, revenge, eternity) by M. Cattelan. On the left handside of the building a plaque reveals presence of the roman theatre buried under the building. To book: [email protected] or phone 02.85155108-4386 (Mon 9.30am-12.30am). Entrance from Palazzo Turati, via Meravigli.

SANTA MARIA DELLE GRAZIEIf you will visit Leonardo da Vinci “Last Supper” and Santa Maria delle Grazie, you have to walk around the corner to see the cloister on the back of the Basilica, it will take your breath away in any season.

PINK FLAMINGOES IN THE GARDEN AND OTHER ODDITIESVery close to Quadrilatero della Moda, in via Cappuccini 3 there is a palace where a colony of pink flamingoes lives free in the garden with ducks and peacocks. Across the road, in via Serbelloni 10, there is a mad doorbell: a bronze ear, sculpture by Adolfo Wildt (1868-1913).

ORTO BOTANICO DI BRERAIn the heart of Brera District, behind the famous Pinacoteca, lies the garden of Eden. It is the Botanic Garden that Maria Teresa d’Austria wanted in 1774. It is tiny but hosts a great varity of species including big trees. The best way to reach is from in via Gabba, next to Bulgari Hotel.

CRIPTA SAN GIOVANNI IN CONCA In piazza Missori there are roman remains of a paleochristin Basilica. Frederick Redbeard destroied the orginal building and this is the remaining of a medioeval recontraction. It then became a mausoleum for the Visconty family, Lords of Milano from Middleages to Reinassance. Open Tues-Sat 9.30am-5.30pm. COLONNE DI SAN LORENZOIn front of Basilica of S.Lawrence there is a rare remind of roman splendour: Colonne di San Lorenzo, probably part of a temple. 16 colomns with Corinthian capitals stand 10 metres high on corso di Porta Ticinese 39. There were outside the roman walls and only in medioeval times they were part of the city.

VICOLO DEI LAVANDAIWalk along the Naviglio Grande until you reach a low shed. This is where women used to do the washing for the wealthy people before Laundryshops were available. The nearby restaurant used to be a soap store, if you get read of the bar counter and the dining tables you can breath an ancient atmosphere.

CHIUSA DELLA CONCHETTA (NAVIGLIO PAVESE)On the Naviglio Pavese there is a close that is still on dity, despite the fact that there is no more navigation. It is nice to walk all the way down and suddently hear the unusual noise of flushing waters. The close is perfectly functioning but no one is there for practical demonstration, so you have to use your imagination.
