45 miles: That’s how far the line would stretch if the clients we serve in one month stood shoulder-to-shoulder along the highway.
It’s one of the longest lines served by the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank.
Those waiting for food often come from work: Hardworking parents of young children. Retired seniors now struggling to survive on afixed income. In the last eight years, the number of people lining up to receive food assistance in central and western Virginia hasgrown exponentially—from 69,000 people each month prior to the recession, to 114,000 people a month today. As good-paying jobsdisappeared, only to be replaced largely by low-paying or part-time jobs, families realized that their paycheck alone wasn’t enough toput three square meals a day on the table.
But here’s the good news: We’re feeding every person in line thanks to you—your partnership, your gifts, your time, your voice. Yoursupport means that no one walks away empty-handed. Thank you. Together, we are solving hunger for thousands waiting in line.

Since then, the cost of gas has increased by anaverage of $1.80 a gallon, and food costs are now38% higher.
Ricky is 34 years old; a garbage collector at a small, private waste management company in ruralRockingham County. It’s discouraging for him toknow that he won’t receive a pay increase for thehard and physical labor he puts in, but he’s stickingwith the job, primarily for one reason: early workhours so that he can get home to care for his wife,Christal, and their children, Tristan (13) andAngelina (9).
Last October Christal had to stop working when shebegan to experience the severe and debilitatingsymptoms of multiple sclerosis. An attack lastedfive months during which she spent 80% of hertime in bed. When she did get up, Christal relied ona walker for mobility.
“It was really hard on my family,” she said. “When Ihad my MS attack, I lost all of my side jobs(housekeeping) and we had to sell one of our extravehicles. Now every dollar goes somewhere.
There’s not a week when we have an extra $30 tolive on.”
They keep the lights off until they’re absolutelynecessary, set the thermostat as low as they cantolerate during the winter and budget carefully forevery expense, especially food.
Christal is waiting to hear if she qualifies fordisability payments, but in the meantime, the familyhas been receiving $230 a month in SNAP benefits(food stamps) and visiting one of our partners,Community Ministry Food Pantry in Bergton.
“The food pantry helps out greatly,” Christal said. “Iget things that I don’t buy with food stamps, because I buy mostly meat with those. I get cannedmeats and vegetables, breads, snacks, andsometimes fresh produce.”
Both Ricky and Christal wish they didn’t have a listof worries about their day-to-day survival, but oneworry they’re thankful to check off of the list is food.

“When I leave the food pantry, I’m not ashamed—I’m grateful,”Christal said. “I know my husband is doing everything he can do,and if I was able to work outside of the home, I would.”

In 2008 Monica Ibie and her daughter, Queen, left theirhome country of Nigeria for a better life in the United States.
“I can no longer live in the region where I am from:fundamentalism and oil wars have made it unsafe,”Monica said.
She now runs her own child-care service in Greenstone on5th in Charlottesville, working Monday through Saturday, some days from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. She’s also a minister forthe Great Apostolic Outreach Ministry. Even with a full-timejob Monica often struggles to make ends meet.
Her granddaughter, Heritage, receives nutritious meals andsnacks after school at our Kids Canteen program atGreenstone. “Heritage gets meals through the school lunchprogram, and the after school meals and snacks at theKids Canteen help supplement her food until dinner time,”Monica said.
Thanks to your generous support, Heritage also won’t have toworry about missing meals this summer while school is not insession. She’ll have access to nutritious meals through theSummer Food Service Program.
“These programs help supplement our needs,” Monica said.“They help me stretch my income so I can purchase healthierfoods like fruits and vegetables for Heritage. Oya gai! (Thankyou in Ogani – her native language). I really appreciateeverything you are doing for us.”

OUR PARTNERAGENCIES
Our partner agencies are always at the front of the line andprimed to serve. Week in and week out, they place bags andboxes of nourishment in the hands of our neighbors, one byone, until the line disappears. We’re thankful to have thepartnership of 234 food pantries, soup kitchens, sheltersand other nonprofits to take the food we acquire and deliverit directly to people in need.
Each Monday evening, 60 to 80 familiesform a line along the basement wall atBethany United Methodist Church (UMC)in Weyers Cave. A pleasant buzzpermeates the hallway as DonnaMcMullen and a team of volunteers greeteach person, exchanging hugs, laughs,“hellos” and “how are you?” as they prepfor their weekly food distribution.
Somewhere along the line you’ll findPastor Brad McMullen, Donna’s husband,in conversation with a neighbor—that’show they refer to every client who visitsBethany UMC.
“We’ve cultivated a warm and welcomingcommunity where everyone feels at home. It’s become much bigger than just handingout food,” Pastor Brad said. “It’s become acommunity where people are loved.”
The church began the food ministry fouryears ago under the leadership of amember, Jean Dunsmore, sincedeceased, who had the vision for thepantry and set the program in motion.
“We started off very slowly,” Pastor Bradsaid. “During our first week we saw 12people; second week, it was six. We allstood around twiddling our thumbs, wondering if we’d made a mistake instarting this ministry. But we believed in itand we stuck with it.”
It was just a matter time. As the needgrew and word spread that there was afood pantry in this rural Augusta Countycommunity, the line of people seekinghelp grew, too.
“Everyone who visits our pantry has hadsomething happen to them that they weren’texpecting; whether its sickness, or divorce,or having a baby before they’re expecting to,or taking care of their parents,” Donna said.“Everybody has a story.”
Members of Bethany’s congregation andof Mt. Crawford United Methodist, a sisterchurch, and even food recipients whowant to repay the generosity have alsocreated programs to accompanyBethany’s food distribution.
“The line of neighbors in need islong, but so is the line of people whowant to help,” Pastor Brad said. “Andthat, as much as anything, is thereason for the success of thisministry.”
ON THE FRONT LINE
More than FoodThrough the pantry, community and churchmembers also provide:
• Paper goods and schoolsupplies donated byMt. Crawford UMCmembers
• A clothes closet• Monthly dinner forneighbors

Rebecca Evans comes from a long line ofteachers, so it’s only natural that shewould become one, too. There was a time, though, when becoming an educatorseemed out of reach.
At 29, she was a divorced single mom, piecing together her finances as best shecould. Rebecca recalled the first time sherealized how little she had—a day whenshe and a friend were trying to squeezethe last drops of ketchup from the bottlefor their children’s meal.
“I never really realized how poor I was, until that moment,” she said.
Gradually, things got better. She wentback to school, earned her degrees, established herself as a teacher andremarried. She’s been an accountingprofessor at Blue Ridge CommunityCollege for 10 years. Rebecca alsocherishes a special avenue throughwhich she teaches life lessons, awayfrom the accounting textbook.
As the leader of the college serviceorganization ENACTUS, she has beenproviding hundreds of students withservice opportunities, particularly forhunger-relief organizations like the FoodBank.
Most significantly, the Virginia HungerSymposium—an annual, four-dayhunger education event at the collegefounded by BRCC President Dr. JohnDowney—has given ENACTUS studentsthe conduit through which to volunteerover the last seven years to help theirhungry neighbors.
“At the end of the day, if I can influencejust a couple of students, and then if theycan influence a couple of other people tomeet the needs of those who are foodinsecure, little by little, we’ll see achange,” Rebecca said.
Her personal motivation to serve iscredited to influential people andexperiences, which taught her to lead
through service. She also never forgotwhat it was like to struggle.
“It’s not a very comfortable place to be,”she said. “I never went to a food bank, but I received assistance for a while, soI can put myself in their place. I think, when life goes full circle, you shouldgive back.”

OUR VOLUNTEERS
There’s no price tag large enough to illustrate the worth of our volunteers. They fuel ourorganization with their hearts, their energy and their serving hands. And their passion andcare for our neighbors allow all of us to do even greater good for those waiting.

Prayer Partners, a group of faith-fullfriends, talk about “fishing” forpeople in need. Helping others iscentral to their faith, and faith iswhat brought them together almosttwo decades ago. Ten individualsleft what they call “broken” churchesand formed their own small church. They meet in living rooms everySunday for worship, song, biblestudy, and prayer. Their discussionsabout church business occurseamlessly in the midst of worship—for them, the two are the same.
In 2002, Prayer Partners read aboutthe work of the Blue Ridge Area FoodBank and they began to contributeannually. Though a small group, theirgiving is now comparable to muchlarger organizations.
“We don’t have buildings to maintainor staff to pay.” And as Christianpeople, they explained, they want tobe responsible about theircontributions and to see the effect ofwhat they do.
The Prayer Partners understand thatfood is a basic necessity, and ittroubles them how many go without.“We also believe it is scandalous thatin this land of plenty, kids arehungry.”
Financial contributions are just oneform of help they provide. Every day,the Prayer Partners express theirfaith through service and outreach. For example, when the electricitywent out after a snowstorm lastwinter, they began to worry abouttheir elderly neighbors and they“fished around” to discover how theycould help. They collected food toreplace what was lost when freezersdidn’t operate for days, and theypurchased fuel to help heat anumber of homes.
“We hold fast to Jesus’ reminder inthe book of Matthew,” explained onePartner. “We know there will alwaysbe poor people with us, but Jesustaught us we should help.”
OUR DONORS
Here’s the simple truth: Every single meal we pass along to a neighbor is a manifestationof your kindness. Without it, it would be impossible for us to share nourishment andgoodness with people experiencing life’s misfortunes. Each contribution, financial, foodand otherwise, is helping us solve hunger in thousands of lives daily. Our deepest thanks.
FISHING LINEAND FAITH
“When we give to the Food Bank we know we are makinga difference every day in the lives of our neighbors.”

Five years ago, our country was in economic crisis. Most have shaken it off and moved on. Butsome haven’t, and we’re so glad you haven’t either.
You’ve responded generously, helping us serve 114,000 people each month. Despite positiveindicators of economic recovery, many more families are still stringing together low-wage orpart-time work to get by. It’s become crystal clear to us that, as long as good-paying jobs arehard to come by, food insecurity will remain a problem.
The only way we’ll solve it is by working together. You’ve done just that over the last year, helping us provide nearly 21 million meals to our neighbors through your service andgenerosity. Volunteers took the time to stock shelves, sort food donations and pack food bagsand boxes; partner food pantries worked unceasingly to deliver nourishment to neighbors inline every week; and many gave funds, hosted food drives and sponsored events to move ourwork forward. Our work together is making an impact in the lives of those waiting in line toreceive relief and sustenance.
Thank you for keeping the issue of hunger in the forefront over the last year – for making it animportant issue to solve. It’s a long-term problem in need of long-term solutions. Together, we’llcontinue to chip away at the problem of hunger in our region and nourish families with yourunfailing support.
With gratitude,
19
