Mrs Price's Ponderings
Welcome to Week 2!
This week sees the return of the implementation of our Spelling Mastery program, with some of our
Year 2 students engaging in this program for the first time with Miss Hazard. This program occurs
three times a week where Spelling rules are explicitly taught; which assists students to use these when
attempting to spell words across all curriculum areas. A reminder to families that all students have
nightly reading as our compulsory homework for students. This is important foundation for all aspects
of learning. It is great to see students tracking their reading for the Premiers Reading Challenge. It is
fabulous to see our excited Prep’s show me on their board where they are when I go into their
classroom. Well done!
Attendance: School Target: 90%, Week 1: 82.9%
Our attendance trophy was awarded to P/1C for the highest attendance in week 1
with just over 90%. Our overall school attendance is well below our target so let us
work together to see an increase this week across our whole school. A reminder
below about the importance of making every day count.
Behaviour Expectation: “I follow instructions straight away”
This week students will develop the ability to make good decisions and self-discipline to be able to follow instructions given
to them by staff when required. In a school setting, students are given instructions for 2 purposes:
1. To keep them and everyone safe
2. To assist in their learning
To be successful in demonstrating these students will:
• listen to all teachers instructions in all settings
• begin the task straight away
• follow the instruction without making comment unless seeking clarification on what has been asked of them in a
respectful manner
Staff use the following tips to assist students in being able to follow instructions.
Aerosol Cans: A reminder to all students and families that Miles State School is an aerosol free
zone. Students are not permitted to bring aerosol cans of any kind into the school
grounds. This is for the health, safety and well-being of all of our Miles State School
community.
Student Code of Conduct Community Engagement Survey:
Parents and Caregivers are invited to participate in a survey to have input into our Student Code of Conduct document,
which is replacing the School’s Responsible Behaviour Plan for Students. We have begun to implement changes across our
school, particularly around having clear expectations for students and positive acknowledgment systems for students
demonstrating these.
Participation in the survey is anonymous and I encourage you to take this opportunity to have your say. The survey form
has been designed so that it can easily be completed on a computer or smartphone. The online survey will be available from
this week –all families have been emailed the link below and will be open until Friday, 31 July 2020, and should take less
than ten minutes to complete.
To access the survey, please click on the link below or copy and paste it into your web browser:

Please contact our school if you have any questions about the survey or would like a hard copy to complete. Thank you to
those families who have already completed the survey emailed this week.
We appreciate your continued support in assisting students in travelling the crossroads to success at Miles State School.
Have a great week,
Rowie Price

Classroom Capers - Shani Cavanagh
P/1C has had a great start to Term Three, with all students displaying positive growth mindsets towards their learning. Here
are a few things we’d like to share with the learning we have done so far:
• In English, we are beginning to look at information reports and identifying the difference between statements which are
factual and make believe. We will looking at native Australian animals in the near future!
• P/1C has also shown lots of excitement with our science unit of the sky and landscapes. We have been taking daily
observations of some features we can see in the sky – e.g. the sun, a blue sky, birds and we even saw a tiny plane fly over
our school!
• In Technology, we have been looking at food and where it comes from. We are fascinated by the process of food growing
on a farm, being harvested and being packaged up ready to be sold in grocery stores.
• Hip Hop has started this week. We have a Prep – Year Two crew and a Year Three – Six crew ready to bust a move! Our
dances that we are learning now are in preparation for the Spring Concert at the end of term.
Have a great week everyone!
