The sole reason of art’s existence is to express what lies within the human spirit. I recently played John Proctor in Arthur Miller’s, “The Crucible,” and as I studied my character and the events he endured, a very important aspect of the human spirit was revealed to me: integrity. It’s easy to think that the human spirit is broken and that society is spiraling into anarchy. Although when you take a look at the culture that has shaped us as a civilization one must argue that as a collective race, we must dive deep into ourselves to reveal the integrity that lies at the base of the human spirit. In studying “The Crucible” it’s easy to decide that hope, happiness, and honesty are all fleeting ideas that are nothing more than a collection of naïve ideals. Though in my studies of John Proctor I chose to believe that none of that is true. The Salem Witch Trials were one of the darkest periods in our history and “The Crucible” reveals that one’s integrity can prevail through the adversity demonstrated against it. When presented with a choice of maintaining his integrity or live with the apathy that exists without it, Proctor decides to die with his reputation intact. This to me reveals that even when death is staring you in the face and everything you have is on the line, it is still possible to do the right thing. Which is more than one could argue for the majority of humanity. Though Miller conveys the message that there can be light in the dark, which is precisely what the human spirit is: the persevering light in the darkness of the world.
