Black Milwaukee men of all backgrounds, various professions and faithscame together at Martin Luther King School recently for the 23rd annualAfrican American Male Teach-In. One of the men who participated wasCommunity Journal sales representative Jimmy Johnson, who received asurprise award for his years of participation in the event.As is the tradition, the men greeted all the school’s students and went to
assigned classrooms to tell the students about themselves and their cho-sen profession. The men and students then came together in the school’sgym for a general program at which the male students “ran the gauntlet”of men who gave them slaps on the back and gave them encouragementto continue their education and take their place as leaders in the commu-nity in the future.--Compiled by MCJ Staff
Retired Milwaukee Public School teacher Cherrye Trotman was among 12Black Milwaukeeans honored as living Black history by the city during its inau-gural Black History program held recently at city hall.A number of individuals came in support of Trotman, including her dauther Dr.
Enid Trotman Anyanwu and Sheila Parrish-Spence, who sent the WeekendEdition photos she and other Trotman supporters took during the event.An MPS teacher for 36 years, Trotman was recognized as “Teacher of the
Year” in 1976. She has also been a member and leader of many nonprofit or-ganizations. She played an active role in the community and earned manyleadershiop volunteer awards.The other women honored as Milwaukee Black History makers were:
