(NAPS)—Spring is on its way, and soon, home and business owners will be cleaningand preparing lawn and garden equip-ment.

“Many are so eager to pull out lawnand garden equipment once spring arrivesthat they sometimes forget basic steps toensure the powerhouse of the equipment—the engine—is in good working order,” saidKris Kiser, president and CEO of OPEI.

“One challenge is that most fuel con-tains some level of ethanol, which containscorrosive alcohol. If you left that fuel in thetank over the winter months, you don’t wantto use it in the spring. It may damage yourequipment. You need to drain it and put in

new fuel that is E10 or lower,” advisesKiser.

Whether it’s a mower, trimmer, blower, chain saw or pruner, the Outdoor PowerEquipment Institute (OPEI) offers tips to helpusers avoid fuel-related problems andready their equipment to operate safely.

Check the fuel tank. If fuel has been sit-ting all winter long in the fuel tank, do notuse it in the spring. Drain it responsibly andput in fresh fuel. Remember to dispose ofthis fuel properly.

Use only E10 or lower fuel in your out-door power equipment. Do not use gas withmore than 10 percent ethanol (E10) in out-door power equipment. Some gas stations

may offer 15 percent ethanol (E15) gas orother fuel blends, but this higher ethanolfuel is dangerous—and is in fact illegal—touse in any small engine equipment, such aslawn mowers, chain saws, generators, andall other lawn and garden equipment.

Don’t leave fuel sitting in the tank formore than 30 days. Untreated gasoline(without a fuel stabilizer) left in the systemwill deteriorate, which may cause startingor running problems and, in some cases, damage to the fuel system.

Inspect your equipment. Check forloose belts and missing or damaged parts. If you find anything concerning, replace theparts or take your equipment to a qualified

service representative.Drain out the old oil and put in fresh oil.

Remove the oil drain plug in your lawnmower and catch the old oil in a container.Replace the plug and refill the engine withoil recommended by the product manufac-turer. Properly dispose of the oil youdrained.

Install clean air f ilters. Your engine andequipment will run much better with cleanfilters. Paper filters need to be replaced. Some foam filters can be cleaned andreplaced.

Sharpen your cutting blade. Have yourlawn mower’s cutting blade sharpened soyou can get a clean cut on your lawn. Your

lawn will be healthier and your lawn mowerwill operate more efficiently, too.

Clean your equipment. If you did notclean your equipment before storing it,there may be dirt, oil or grass stuck to it.Give your equipment a good spring-clean-ing. A cleaner machine will run more effi-ciently and last longer.

Review your manual. Now is a goodtime to read the operator’s manual andrefamiliarize yourself with the controls andwhat they do. Make sure you know how tostop the machine quickly if needed.

The days are getting warmer, the ice hasmelted and the birds have returned. That canmean only one thing-spring has sprung. For

many people, spring brings a return to thegreat outdoors. It can also mean less treach-erous and time consuming driving. No moredigging your car out just to go to work, driv-ing at a snail's pace and scraping, yes, thedreaded scraping.

While it's tempting to jump in your vehi-cle and enjoy the freedom that spring bringsto driving, keep in mind that like you, yourcar has been through a lot over the winter. There are several things that need to bechecked and prepared for spring driving.Depending on your level of car maintenanceexpertise, you may be able to do most ofthese things yourself. If not, have a profes-sional take a look under the hood.

Begin where the rubber meets the road-your tires. Check your tire pressure. The cor-rect pressure will be printed on the tire in PSI(pounds per square inch). If the tire is underthe recommended PSI, inflate it to that num-ber...DON'T OVER INFLATE IT. This may alsobe a good time to get your tires rotated. Thisshould be done every 5,000 to 10,000 miles.

For many areas, spring means rain so it's

a good time to check your wiper blades. There are few things more annoying than driv-ing in the rain with wiper blades that aren'tdoing their job. It's frustrating to have a bigsmear across your field of vision or a torn

wiper blade trailing across your windshield.Avoid these problems b checking your wiperblades. Replacing the blades is quick, easyand relatively inexpensive. Simply go intoyour local auto part store, tell them your vehi-cle make and model, and they'll direct you tothe correct replacement blade. Many storeswill even install them for you.

Another part that is easy to check is yourbattery. Pop the hood and make sure that theposts on the battery are clean. If there is anexcess of corrosion on the battery, considerreplacing it.

Clean out the interior. Months of saltyand snowy boots have no doubt taken a tollon the carpeting. It's a good time to vacuumand perhaps even shampoo the carpeting. While you're at it, clean out the empty coffeecups and fast food bags.

Other things to consider are the air filter, the oil and oil filter, and the radiator andcooling system. Spring is a time to get reac-quainted with the great outdoors-just makesure your vehicle is ready to spring into bet-ter weather.

Whether you’re selling or maintainingyour car, a good detail job can go a longway in keeping it looking its best. You canundertake the thorough cleaning yourself oryou can take advantage of the servicesoffered at thousands of auto detailers nation-wide. Whatever route you take, you canexpect the following areas to be covered.

ExteriorA car’s exterior can take a real beating

over the years. Most exterior detail jobsinvolve the cleaning, polishing and protect-ing of many facets of a car’s exterior, includ-ing the paint, chrome trim, windows, wheelsand tires. There are several techniques andproducts available to do this from acids anddegreasers to waxes and polishes.

InteriorLike the exterior, a car’s interior can take

a real beating over time, especially in house-holds with kids or areas with harsh weather.

Interior detail jobs include an extensivecleaning of the dash, panels, windows, upholstery and carpet. Depending upon theservice you select, the seats may be removedfrom the car to ensure a good cleaning.Again, a variety of techniques and productsmay be used, including steam cleaning.

EngineNo auto detail would be complete with-

out the pop of the hood and an enginecleaning. Steam and degreasers can dowonders to improve the look of an engine.

While body panels may be sanded toeliminate scratches, most detail work does notinclude major bodywork or repair.Depending upon where you go, variousdetail services may be available and pricesmay vary according to the size of vehicle youhave. Detailers may offer everything from acomplete detail package to an exterior washand wax. No matter how much or how littleyou have done, your car will look better andyou will feel better driving or selling it.

Emerging wildflowers, the songs ofmigratory birds, and spring breezes willgreet everyone eager to exercise in thegreat outdoors at “Hike for Health,” aweekly program beginningWednesday, April 1 at 10:30 a.m. atWehr Nature Center. The NatureCenter is in Whitnall Park, at 9701 W.College Ave.

“Why walk the mall when you canenjoy nature,” said Deb McRae,Director of Wehr Nature Center. “We

welcome everyone to come along witha friendly group of nature lovers whowalk our trails each week for exerciseand fun.”

Participants walk for about 30-90minutes, depending on their schedulesand the weather. Walks take placeWednesdays, April–early November.

Besides the camaraderie, the con-tact with nature itself can have positiveeffects. “Green Perspectives for PublicHealth,” a paper published in the

International Journal of EnvironmentalResearch and Public Health, demon-strates that contact with natural outdoorenvironments has potential for a health-promoting and disease-preventingeffects, including lowered blood pres-sure, heart rate, blood-glucose levels, and cortisol levels, as well as positiveeffects on immune-function response.

“Connecting with nature has anoth-er great benefit: those who know andlove nature work harder to protect it,”

said McRae.“Hike for Health” will be pa
