The large room seemed empty. Four chairs set around the table, with only one of them occupied. "Have you ever noticed the empty space before, S heila?” Eileen asked in a melancholy tone. No response was forthcoming. Sheila remained stubbornly quiet. "What the hell is wrong with you this morning? It was your decision that Paul and Martin had to leave. No point you sulking about it now!" Sheila, in no mood for Eileen’s dramatics, chose to ignore her completely. Let her prattle on, she was tired of hearing that whining voice. Moaning--always moaning, about some ridiculous trifle or other. "Paul was all right. I thought he was fun. You could have let him stay a while longer.” Eileen c ontinued--deciding to ignore Sheila‘s petulance for the moment. "He was fun to be with. You can’t deny it. You liked him as much as I did,” she laughed coarsely, and continued, "Not, of course that it changed the outcome. I didn’t like Martin all that much. He was far too big for his boots. Strutting around like a rooster--and as for all that macho bullshit--he sure changed his tune when it came time for them to leave." Eileen continued with a delighted grin at the memory. "Your lack of interest is becoming boring, Sheila." This said with all the sarcasm she could muster; she rose and walked across to the mirror. She flicked back her long dark hair as she walked. She gazed into the mirror; and gently removed a tiny spot on her cheek. Pleased with her reflection, she sauntered back to the table and sat down. "You weren’t so bored when they were around were y ou? You were excited then, sure enough. The goodbyes always excite you don't they, Sheila?” her agitation was now showing in her voice, “Couldn’t keep your dam mouth shut then. Could you, bitch?” She spat out the words, finally angered at being ignored! "Haven't I always said that the gun would’ve been

An hour had passed. During that time, the woman had been sittingwith her back to the mirror. She sat--silent and unmoving. As if sheknew something different was happening. She calmly waited.

The doctor returned to the viewing room wiping his glasses with hisshirt. "What’s the confirmed body count?"

"Fifteen confirmed, and identified.” The big detective shook his headas he answered. "Fifteen lives--fifteen families who couldn't evenbury a complete corpse.” The last was uttered in tones of despairand total disgust.

"Look, Doctor,” he continued, “We know so far all the victims havebeen male. They were all caucasian—all were heterosexual."

The lieutenant began ticking the points off on his large thick fingers,"All aged between twenty-nine and thirty-five years. All slim andathletic."

"No other common denominators?" queried Nigel Cantrell withsurprise.

"That’s the worst of it, we can find no other connection--nothing!"

“Apart from the inescapable fact that they are all very, very dead.” said the good doctor.

The big police officer was unsure how to respond. Therefore, heremained silent.

When no further remark appeared to be forthcoming from NigelCantrell, Mike Matheson continued, "Because the information we aregetting is random; it has taken a good while to realize that there isa pattern of sorts. It may mean nothing. Then again--it may meana great deal."

“With the victim's first names,” he said, pointing to one of the listson the white board as he spoke, “each letter of the alphabet is usedonce only. There are no repetitions."

“There are eleven missing letters."

"A,E,H,I,L,M,N,O,P,S,and W. Is it possible that there are stilleleven missing bodies out there, Doctor?"

“I wish I could answer that, Mike. But I cannot--not yet," was thecryptic response.

"Good God, man--these deaths go back at least eight years! Do youunderstand the significance of that? If that—whatever the hell sheis--in there!” he jerked his thumb towards the other room, “ if--she is responsible for this mess--she would have only been sixteen-years-old when it began! Dear God, man—sixteen? What sort of animal is she?”

The doctor made no comment at this information. Something wasbothering him. He stood in front of the large whiteboard, takingdown notes as he read.

Missing Letters. A,E, H,I,L,M,N,O,P,S and W.

"All right, Doctor, let me run through what we do know.”

“Each victim has sustained numerous burns to both face andtorso. Cigarette burns," he went on, “this appears to indicate someform of torture before death. All victims to date have beencastrated.” His voice thickened with disgust, as he continued, “Thepenises have been inserted in the rectum in each case.”

"The heart had been removed; it was not with the other bodyparts."

"Trophies," stated the doctor. "Not unusual in this type of ritualisticmurder I'm afraid.

“I am going in now. What, if anything do I need to be aware of,apart from what I’ve already seen and heard?" he asked in his calmvoice.

“We have nothing else! Nothing. Absolutely fucking nothing! Canyou believe that? After eight-fucking-years?" he drew a deepbreath, and continued in a calmer tone, "Look, Doc, you’ve seen thetapes. Be careful man--we got real lucky to get this far! In eightyears, she has made only one mistake. That's the result."

He continued, wearily pointing to the two-way mirror, "In all myyears on the force--I’ve dealt with my share of twisted humanity. But that in there, man, that’s something else entirely!"

The detective indicated the door and sat back to watch--record, andwait.

The Doctor entered the room quietly; noticing as he did that thelone occupant of the room didn't bother looking up. Her bowed head

remained resting on her folded arms. Although he was certain shewas aware of his presence.

"Hello, Eileen," he said softly.

She raised herself into a sitting position and stretched. Flexing herlong arms and yawning as she did.

"My name is Nigel Cantrell, may I sit down?" again he was ignored.

"Eileen,” he continued, “I was hoping that you and I might talk awhile. Would that be okay?”

“Would it not be more correct to introduce yourself as, ‘ Doctor’ Nigel Cantrell?" she asked in a warm soft voice. "I've read much of your work— Doctor Cantrell. I found it shall we say-- inspiring! "

She stood, a woman confident of her beauty. She walked over tohim. Assessing him much as you would an insect under amicroscope, she sniffed at him--moving closer. A predator, scenting

its’ prey.

The woman circled him twice. Moving closer--slowly--evercloser. Then with a well-manicured fingernail--she reached out, andgently traced his top lip--making deep moaning sounds as she did.

Then she gave a throaty laugh and moved back--just a little.

The hairs on his neck stood on end, and he felt unnaturally cold.

He remembered only too well the last time he had felt that he wasin the presence of evil such as this.

He would never forget it.

He had been in the company of Ted Bundy. Two days before he was

executed.

This felt the same. A cold gut wrenching recognition of something.Something—inhuman and unholy.

It took all his years of training, to keep his face impassive.

He focused instead on the nagging thought that he was missingsomething vital on that list.

He sat down, without her consent. Ignoring her presence, hefocused on his notes.

She was intrigued, in spite of herself. This was unexpected. Sheperched herself on the table next to where he sat; she crossed herlong slim legs, and leant forward to read what he was writing.

Abruptly he looked up, and murmured aloud, "Aaaah--yes! Yes of course!"

He felt, rather than saw, her body tremble. His brain recognized it--not fear as one might expect--she was indeed trembling—but withexcitement!

Finally, he looked up at her, "Sheila?" he asked the question.

"It is, Sheila, isn't it?" he continued softly.

"There will be no more bodies. Not after Paul and Martin. Will there,Sheila?"

He repeated the name, “Sheila?"

"Sheila?" he allowed his voice to raise a fraction.

"Oh--what a clever little man,” she clapped her hands slowly, mocking him, “ Clever—clever—little man !" she taunted.

The doctor did not react.

He stood, carefully avoiding eye contact. He crossed to the door andleft the room.

"What the hell are you doing Cantrell?" stormed the detective as theDoctor re-entered.

Cantrell walked over to the list of names.

He wrote on the board in large letters, A, E, H, I, L, M, N, O,P,S,W

"Sheila didn’t slip up gentleman. That’s her correct name by theway. Sheila, allowed you to catch her!"

“What! Why in the name of God would she do that? We hadn’t evencome close to finding out who our killer was. She’s much tooclever! She made a mistake, pure and simple.” He stated in a voicereserved thus far for errant underlings.

"No, my friend! She made no mistakes. She decided the when--thewhere--and the how!"

Page 13: Mind Shift part 1

"Then then she sat back and waited for your people to arrive. Therewill be no more bodies after Paul and Martin to locate detective. I'dstake my reputation on it.” With that startling announcement--hewalked over to the white board.

"What the hell! What are you talking about, man? Even if we takeout Paul and Martin--we still have another nine possibilities."

Doctor Nigel Cantrell wrote the letters out again. A, E, H, I, L, M,N, O, P S, W. "Now--if we remove, Paul and Martin. Then--rearrange the letters just so--we are left with? Ahh yes! I thoughtas much!"

A, E, H, I, L, M, N, O, P, S, W.

"She had finished gentleman!” he said firmly. All she wanted thenwas for everyone to acknowledge how brilliant she is!"

He stood back to allow the startled police officers to see what waswritten there.

SHEILA WON

“Oh dear God in Heaven! This was a…fucking game to her? A

fucking game! What are our chances of her being fit to stand trial?”

“Doc …?”

“Slim.”
