CAGAYAN DE Oro City - The National Grid Corpo-ration of the Philippines (NGCP) has appealed to the public not to plant or grow trees near transmis-sion structures.

Ms. Elizabeth A. Lad-aga, corporate communi-cation and public affairs officer for NGCP - Min-danao, said trees planted near transmission lines can cause power interruptions when they breach the pre-scribed safety clearances for high-voltage power lines.

L ast month, NGCP complained about trees intentionally planted un-der transmission lines, particularly in Balo-i area in Lanao del Norte.

According to NGCP, the Balo-i-Agus 2 138-kV line already tripped seven times for January alone because of trees deliberately planted by

“During my training at the BWM Media Center in Cagayan de Oro City, I have learned a plethora of ideas about radio broadcasting. Thanks to my teacher adviser, Ms. Jinny A Luminhay, for helping me know what radio broadcasting really is, through Mr. Joe del Puerto Felicilda, the source person and training facilitator. It never came to me the radio news model, the types of straight news (advance coverage, or continuing news), data gathering, kinds of news events, radio news writing, and the things that should be avoided or should not be used in broadcast news writing, among others. I should also mention the length of the script, and how each segment is critically measured. So, I greatly honor and thank you Teacher Jinny for bringing me to this very educational and worthwile seminar/workshop.”

Ms. Ladaga also remind-ed the public to take extra precautions when near the transmission lines.

She also urged them not to park vehicles near or under transmission lines.

Flying of kite near trans-mission lines, climbing transmission structures, putting up of antenna near or under transmission lines

transmission structures, do not carry long sticks or any object that might get in contact with the power lines,” she advised.

Ms. Ladaga also re-minded the public to report to the NGCP any incident of tangled tree branches, leaning posts or towers, and sagging lines. (APB/PIA-10/asf )

SAN Juan Rep. JV Ejer-cito Estrada reminded the Aquino administration that its “economic gains” may be meaningless if it will not be able to improve the lives of Filipinos and lift millions out of poverty. Ejercito Estrada said the 6.6-percent economic growth posted by the Phil-ippines last year will not mean anything to Juan de la Cruz unless it translates into more jobs, higher pay, and an over-all improvement in the quality of his life.

“If the country’s economy performed ‘beyond expecta-tions,’ why then did we have more unemployed Filipinos last year?” the young law-maker asked. The San Juan solon pointed out the results of the October 2012 Labor Force Survey which revealed that 2.76 million Filipinos are unemployed. The survey showed that some 120,000 additional Filipino work-ers joined the ranks of the unemployed last year. The country’s unemploy-

ment rate went up despite the fact that prior to the release of the survey, the Philip-pines posted a 6.5 percent increase in its gross domestic product (GDP)--the sum of goods and services produced within the country’s borders--in January to September 2012. “President Aquino and his Cabinet should also ask the 10.9 million Filipino households who considered themselves poor in an SWS survey whether the 6.6 per-cent economic growth in

2012 had an impact on their lives,” said Ejercito Estrada. In a survey by the Social Weather Stations (SWS) in January, an additional 1.4 million Filipino households rated themselves “mahirap.” The SWS poll, which was conducted on Dec. 8 to 11, indicated that 54 percent of respondents or 10.9 million Filipino households consid-ered themselves poor. This is higher than the 47 percent or 9.5 million Filipino families recorded in August 2012. The young lawmaker also

noted that while the salary of minimum wage earners have remained the same, the prices of basic goods and services such as food and utilities rise every year. “Our minimum wage earners practically have no respite from the continuous increase in the price of basic goods and services. So before the Aquino administration flaunts its economic gains, it must first examine whether these have really trickled down to the people.” (Advertorial)

BEN EMATA JR.

Unya

THINK a minute… Imagine there was a safe, legal drug that not only made you feel good, but was actually good for you. And best of all, it was free! A former drug addict named William Burroughs says: “Every feeling you get on drugs you can get without drugs.” People who get high on marijuana often say they can laugh at anything. But they’re wrong in thinking that the fun comes from the marijuana. It’s actually their own ability to laugh and have fun which they already had. So all the drug problems of harming our bodies and brains, hurting our families and relation-ships, ruining our jobs and careers, just are not worth it.

Natural high The fact is we were born with powerful chemicals already in our bodies that can give us these great feel-ings and highs. But how do we activate and enjoy these amazing great feel-ings? Simply by choosing to. Did you know that fun and happiness is actually a choice? When we choose to be happy, to laugh, to have a positive attitude, and to love others, then our whole body chemistry changes. We get new energy, confidence, and a totally new perspective on our situation and life. We just feel better in every way. Victor Frankl’s true story tells about the horrible pain and torture the Jews expe-rienced every day in a Nazi prison camp. They were treated even worse than

animals! Yet Victor Frankl and some of his fellow Jews chose to have fun and en-joy every day. They simply chose to create their own life of happiness by seeing the good in each other and the world, even with all the

evil, painful things being done to them. A successful man says that you can make any kind of job you do fun. He says: “If it’s not fun, then you’re not doing it right.” Real fun and happiness only comes when you choose to change your mind and attitude. And Jesus Christ, Who gave you the ability to be happy, can help you start changing today. Just ask Him to take full charge of your thinking and way of living every day. Jesus is the One Who can help you bring out all the fun and happiness He put inside you—no matter what problems or pain you’re facing. That’s the way you can live every day with a natural high. Just Think a Minute…

Hilong-Hilong. CAGAYAN de Oro City - The Department of Health - Center for Health Devel-opment (DOH-CHD-10) dengue surveillance report for January 1 to January 25 indicated a rise in the num-ber of admitted patients. After posting a consider-able drop of more than 200 dengue cases between the months of November (517) and December (315), the count now had started to swell to 400 recorded cases for the entire region. Dr. Dave Mendoza, chief of the Regional Epidemi-ology, Surveillance and Disaster Response Unit (RESDRU), however, noted that there is only a slight increase of 85 cases from 315 in December to 400 cases in January.

Most of these cases were from the province of Misamis Oriental ab-sorbing 52.50 percent of the total reported cases or 210 patients, followed by Bukidnon posting some 96 cases, Lanao del Norte and Misamis Occidental with 46 each, and Camiguin province with only two. The surveillance report likewise said five deaths last January due to dengue, mostly between children aged one to nine years old, four of which were reported in Misamis Oriental and one in Misamis Occidental. Bukidnon province, on the other hand, recorded the highest percentage increase, which soared from seven to 96 cases last month. (JCV-PIA 10/jdelpf)

FUn! Fun! Fun! and Americana Galore on a Thursday at a new place called TGIFriday’s at Ayala Malls’ Centrio Cagayan de Oro. It was nice to see old and new faces together for TGI-Friday’s Media Launch at the Ayala Mall’s Centrio Mall last Thursday, January 24. The old boys led by Mindanao Cur-rent’s Ed Montalvan, Business Mirror’s Butch Enerio, Mind-anews Froilan Gallardo, Gold Star Daily’s netnet Camomot were there as were the young bloggers with the likes of Tom Udasco, Venus Mabale and Jaqs Agbon, to name a few. We were welcomed by Selrhaco’s Charles Lim who introduced us to TGIFriday’s Cagayan de Oro Manager Mitz Carreon and Bistro Group’s Marketing Manager Roda Pa-tricia Adriano. T.G.I.Friday’s newest store sports the same contemporary vibe and interiors that can be found in any Friday’s branch worldwide: the wooden dining tables, spacious booth seating down to the sleek droplights that brighten the dining areas. The eclectic memorabilia concept, of course, is there too: disco balls and images of icons such as Bruce Lee, Wonder Woman, E.T. and the Ghostbusters and the “Album Wall” which highlights musical superstars from Elvis Presley to Michael Jackson. Ed and I especially like this wall with the Harley Davidson and Levi’s logos from our generation. For a Thursday evening and the 24th of January at that, the place was surpris-ingly full, with most patrons coming in as couples and families. Which really surprised me because for Cagayan de Oro, the prices were certainly not cheap although not that expensive. This time of the month when the 15th or end of the month payday is approaching and salaried employees are usually on scrimp mode after splurging most of their pay in the week following payday is traditionally called hereabouts as tingbitay sa iro (literally, never mind). We had hardly settled our-selves in two long tables when the parade of OMG dishes from the kitchen started com-ing in waves: Three-for-all, a trio of Friday’s signature Fried Mozzarella, Buffalo Wings and Loaded Potato Fries; closely followed by Chicken Fingers, Friday’s all-time fa-vorite hand-battered chicken tenders, fried and served with flavorsome fries and a choice of Barbecue sauce or Honey Mustard dip. Jack Daniel’s Salmon and Ribs; and Holy of Holies! A platter-sized burger that had everyone’s eyes wide in shock! That wasn’t the end of the evening’s fun however as the entire crew marched in to greet ABS-CBn’s Donna Ocampo a Happy Birthday followed by a stirring rendition of Psy’s
