Chamber of Commerce meeting, November 5, 2014
Present: Kevin Krull, Marcy Brandt, Jordan Patterson, Sally Jurgensmier, Marcia Davis, Don Phillips, Rhonda Ellis, Andy Knott, Riley Space Absent: Dawn Thompson, Amy Fuqua, Carolyn Bunger, Angie Finn Meeting was called to order at 12:10 pm by Vice President Kevin Krull. Don moved to approve the minutes. Jordan seconded. All voted in favor. Treasurer’s Report was presented. Marcia reported that all of the excess food from the auction was sold either at Bandfest or to members. The auction food stand ended up losing $624.85, but Bandfest looks to clear about $4,000. All in all the events ended up ok and were good exposure for the Chamber. The last deposit of $5,286.80 included the annual $5,000 from the City. New members include Dena Beck and Au-to Way Bowl. Riley moved to accept the report. Sally seconded. All voted in favor. Old Business:
July 4th
Celebration (2015): Kevin talked to Brian at Wayne. Contracts were to be sent at the end of Oc-tober, but ours was overlooked. We should be receiving it soon. Deposit of $10,000 needs to be made by the 15
th of November. The City will pay their $5k, but as it has to be voted on by the City
Council and that likely won’t happen before the 15th
. If we can only pay $5k they will still give us free product, since the contract wasn’t sent to us on time.
2015 Budget: Marcia shared that Angie commented that since the Century of Lights committee has already used $1,000 of their budget, the numbers under that category could be adjusted to $4,000 instead of $5,000. No other changes were recommended at this time. The final budget will be ap-proved in December.
2015 Board Nominations/Elections: Five people have been nominated: Dena Beck, Janene Hill, Jeremi-ah Holmes, Jeanne Jons & Carol Loschen. Marcia will send out an email next week, requesting votes. There are four open positions. Deadline for votes will be the 21
st.
New Business:
Chamber Bucks: There has been discussion at the Promotions meeting about how there are non-Chamber members who redeem Chamber Bucks. Some people at the meeting felt that non-Chamber members should not be allowed to redeem them – that it should be a perk of member-ship. Others felt that as long as they are still being redeemed in Minden, it still keeps the money lo-cal. Buffalo County allows their “Buffalo Bucks” to be spent in any business, but people are encour-aged to shop at Chamber members. It was decided that the board needed to decide what the poli-cy is about who can redeem them. Don moved that all local businesses be allowed to redeem Chamber bucks even if they aren’t members. Riley seconded. All voted in favor.
Other: Cash Mobs encourage people to shop at local businesses. The general feel is that the logistics may be more than what we care to take on. Marcy mentioned the possibility of doing Business Spotlights every week to highlight ALL member businesses, not just retail. It was decided that Mar-cia will start hitting businesses up to provide information and we will start running them weekly via email blast and Facebook.
Kevin also got information from Hastings about how they handle Farmer & Rancher appreciation with a barbeque and entertainment. They also give out awards and hold a raffle. Sponsorships are $200. The Ag BBQ at the fair could be renamed the Community BBQ, then plan an additional Ag Appre-ciation event. Some ideas were discussed, but it was decided that it will be pursued. Kevin will con-tinue to research then will bring it back to the board.
