“the new branch will also service the expansive mining and commercial construction and civil infrastructure development projects...”

Kennards Hire has continued its expansion with the establishment and opening of a new branch at Coolalinga, an outer area of Darwin.

The branch was officially opened by the Minister for Business Peter Styles and takes the number of branches in the Top End to four and number of employees to over 40.

“In addition to serving the needs of local contractors and trades people, the new branch will also service the expansive mining and commercial construction and civil infrastructure development projects within the region,” said Tony Symons, Kennards Hire General Manager WA & NT Operations.

This has led to the Kennards Hire Coolalinga branch having larger equipment available such as five to eight tonne excavators, 13 tonne and multi-tyre rollers, five and 10 tonne tippers,

water carts for road works, tractors and slashers and portable toilets. There is also more specialist equipment available including pumps and mine speced generators to meet diverse customer needs.

Located adjacent to the Stuart Highway at 43 Fairweather Crescent, Coolalinga, the new Kennards Hire branch is easily accessible by large transport trucks, which pick up and deliver equipment to remote sites. “This means customers coming from Humpty Doo or Darwin River areas can save time as they

Additionally, Kennards Hire also provided four trailer mounted light towers. Two shone in the air for the crowd to watch the tricks of the motor cross performers and two were used to illuminate the landing ramp for the riders.

“Most hire companies just deliver the equipment and leave,” said Tanya. “Kennards Hire aren’t like that at all. The Kennards Hire team set-up the generators and lighting towers exactly where they were needed. A technician spent time with an event staff member and demonstrated the equipment and answered questions.”

“Having staff with close ties to the community through family, schools and being members of local sporting teams is very important.”

Since it was established in 1948 Kennards Hire has grown into one of Australia’s largest and most respected hire companies, with over 150 branches across Australia

Based in Brisbane, Sassaffair Events was named the 2014 Queensland Wedding and Event Planner of the Year by WEOA and specialise in dinners and banquets, gala balls, cocktail functions, conferences, launch events, music festivals and sporting

carnivals. The company has delivered events for some of Australia’s leading corporate companies including Xstrata Coal and Economic Development Queensland (EDQ),

Tanya said the customer service she received was outstanding. “The Kennards Hire team took the time to talk through the equipment and showed me the QR tag, which provides instant access to the user manual via a

smartphone,” she said.

“It’s a whole level of service you don’t get with many companies. Sassaffair will definitely be using Kennards Hire for future events,” Tanya added.

don’t have to travel into Darwin to pick up equipment,” said Tony.

Kennards Hire equipment is sent to customers as far afield as Kununurra in Western Australia, to Groote Eylandt by barge, far North Queensland and down into South Australia.

and New Zealand and remains proudly family-owned.

“The team members in the new branch are from the local area,” said Tony. “Having staff with close ties to the community through family, schools and being members of local sporting teams is very important. This means our staff know our customers and our customers know our staff personally.

“As well as having particular areas of expertise, Kennards Hire staff also have invaluable knowledge of the area and surrounding district. This gives them a greater understanding of customer needs.”

Kennards Hire Coolalinga is open Monday to Friday from 7:00am to 5:00pm and Saturday from 7:30am to 4:00pm.

For the spectacular one night event, which features fireworks, monster machines, including a 52 tonne Centurion Army Tank and freestyle motocross stunt demons Kennards Hire supplied a range of equipment to award winning event company Sassaffair Events.

“Organising and managing an event of this size involves co-ordinating numerous deliveries of various equipment into a very small and often congested area,” said Tanya Liddell, Owner, Sassaffair Events.

“The assistance we received from Kennards Hire was fantastic. They were on site precisely on time, knew what had to be done and did it without needing to be asked or supervised.“

Kennards Hire supplied two, 20kVA generators and a distribution board. The generators were used to power 1000w speakers, flame throws, angle grinders, which also required 10amp power access, a sound mixer (for 2 wireless mics), a sound deck, a DJ mixing deck and fluro lights.

The Fire and Fuel Festival is a fan highlight in the week leading up to the V8 Supercar Castrol EDGE Gold Coast 600.

For the redevelopment of a petrol station site at Wyee on the NSW Central Coast, building company BCL Contractors hired scaffolding, fencing and props as well as a tipper truck from Kennards Hire in nearby Warners Bay.“The project involved emptying 42000 litres of fuel from the three petrol tanks and carefully excavating around them before they’re lifted out by crane,” explained Lorcan Harding, Owner of BCL Contractors. “To ensure any soil surrounding the tanks that may have traces of contamination is removed, the area is excavated four metres deep.”

LIGHTING UP THE GRAIN HARVEST

“During the busy harvest season the site operates for extended periods,” said Tony Neven, Goolgowi Site Manager. “To provide lighting for the equipment and machinery operators, Kennards Hire Wagga Wagga supplied 25 diesel powered light towers and delivered them to various storage sites.”

The trailer mounted articulated, telescopic silenced flood light towers feature 4 x 1000 watt metal halide lamps that deliver significant usable light, while the hydraulic controls assist in boom extension and manual controls enable lamp tilt and direction.

CLEARING THE LINE

“At various points along the line, the outer casing of the telecommunications pits had been damaged and given way and filled with soil,” said Nathaniel Noble, Owner of civil works company, Elbon Civil, who were contracted to clear the pits.

To remove the soil without causing damage to the fibre optics, Nathaniel hired a Vermeer truck mounted, Hydro Vacuum Excavator from Kennards Hire.

The Hydro Vacuum uses a 3000psi water lance to break up soil in conjunction with a 1025cfm Blower/Vacuum. The massive Vacuum excavates

the spoil into the 8300 litre capacity tipping spoil tank, which only needs to be emptied at the end of the project. This enables projects to be completed more efficiently as it eliminates downtime.

“Once the pits were clear of debris and the old fibreglass wall fragments were removed, a new pit casing was installed to enable access to the optics and telecommunication lines,” Nathaniel said.

At the Ford Australia plant in Campbellfield in Melbourne’s north, there are a number of inspection and service pits along the internal nature strip of the Hume Highway. These pits carry high-speed fibre optic cable that enable Ford Australia to transfer data to offices throughout the world.

“The scaffolding supplied by Kennards Hire was used to gain access to the canopy to enable its removal and then used to re-stud and re-sheet the building, while the props were placed to support the roof,” he said.

BCL Contractors are involved in a range of construction projects across commercial and residential works as well as petrol station development.

“Dealing with Kennards Hire is easy, everything is sorted with a simple phone call or email.

“The staff are very helpful and they schedule deliveries around my needs. If there’s a change to an order or delivery time it’s no problem,” Lorcan said.

“The customer service is always great and you know the equipment is well serviced and is going to work how it should.”

Elbon Civil is involved in all aspects of excavations and landscaping projects specialising in under road boring, pipe and cable locating, concrete constructions and street lighting. As a Registered Electrical Contractor, Elbon Civil also provides Electrical

and communication solutions for a variety of industries. Driveways and site preparation is also undertaken by Elbon Civil.

This is the first time Nathaniel has used this type of vacuum excavator. “The Vemeer is a great machine that saves a significant amount of time and labour. Not only did the vacuum excavator penetrate the soil with ease, it’s really efficient and evacuated the residual soil and slurry, making the job site clean. And the foreman’s only comment was “it is great, I loved not really touching a shovel the whole job,” he said.

Nathaniel is also very happy with the high level of service he receives from Kennards Hire saying, “The customer service is always great and you know the equipment is well serviced and is going to work.”

The township of Goolgowi in New South Wales, 650 kilometres west of Sydney, becomes a hive of activity during the harvest season. The Emerald Grain receiving and storage site will see over 60,000 tonnes of wheat, barley and canola from farms across the region.

With a horizontal reach of 3 metres for out and over; and up and over applications such as pits and under bridges, a powerful diesel generator provides the power for illumination and auxiliary power tools if required. Additionally the lights are separately switched for power saving flexibility.

In addition to the light towers, Kennards Hire Wagga Wagga also supplied a frontend loader, which was used on the grain bunkers at one of Emerald Grain’s larger storage sites in the region, ‘The Rock’.

The Emerald Grain network extends to all key grain growing regions of Australia with 13 grain marketing offices located in regional towns and receives grains and

oil seeds from around 10,000 farming families.

The 11 upcountry storage and handling facilities in Victoria and New South Wales have an overall capacity of 1.5 million tonnes. Emerald exports roughly 3 million tonnes of grain from 17 grain terminals across Australia to 35 countries around the globe.

“When filling a grain bunker there were times when we needed to move a light tower,” explained Tony. “From one end of the line to the other could be 150 metres, being trailer mounted units meant they were light weight and easy to relocate.

“The service provided by the Kennards Hire team at Wagga Wagga was fantastic,” said Tony, “They are helpful with advice and flexible with delivery, at harvest times that’s very important.”

The landfill site upgrade includes a new recycling shed and gatehouse, weighbridge and an automated drive through wheel-wash station to prevent contaminants from being transported from the site.

The concrete barriers were placed along either side of the access roadway to the existing landfill which enabled customers to enter the site without being interrupted by construction operations or machinery.

The fencing, which interlocks into the concrete barriers, indicates the site boundary and also prevents people from entering the restricted areas. This protects people and plant equipment after hours.

The barriers and fencing were delivered to site by Kennards Hire, which enabled Thiess to place them in the exact positions required with a Franna crane.

“The rota-clean was used to remove dirt, dust, grease and oil build-up and tyre marks on the concrete in preparation for line marking,” explained Michael Cheney, Project Manager at Clifford Constructions.

The service station is located on a major highway and sees a high volume of traffic pass through it daily. “The site is approximately 6000 square metres,” said Michael, “And the areas that need cleaning equated to about 3000 square metres.”

Powered by a Honda GX390 engine outputting an impressive 4000PSI at 15L/min, the all-in-one unit combines a pressure washer, rota-cleaner, hose and gun, while rubber engine mounts reduce vibration for more comfortable operation.

This highly effective machine means users don’t have to change to a new piece of equipment for a different task. A leaver enables a simple switch between the rota-cleaner and the pressure gun, adding to efficiency in time and operation. The water pressure can also be adjusted from 4000PSI to 1000PSI for more sensitive surfaces such as pebblecrete, slate and sandstone.

HIGH PERFORMANCE UNDER PRESSURE

In order to keep the existing Blaxland Waste Management Facility operational during its upgrade, commercial construction company Thiess, hired 100 metres of concrete barriers and 1.8 metre high fencing from Kennards Hire, Girraween.

For over 25 years Clifford Constructions has been a quality building company with a solid track record in the commercial, industrial and retail construction sectors. Clifford Constructions specialise in the development and refurbishment of well-known companies such as Caltex, McDonalds, KFC as well as government building projects across NSW, Victoria and Queensland.

“Kennards Hire provide a very high level of service,” said Michael. “The staff in the branches have an extensive amount of knowledge about the products and are accommodating to our hire needs. Nothing is too much trouble,” he added.

The rota-clean is ideally suited to commercial cleaning applications including garages, industrial warehouses and factories as well as domestic driveways, paths and garden areas.

Its efficiency and popularity has led to Kennards Hire increasing the number of units available at their branches nationwide.

To thoroughly clean the concrete area at a refurbished Caltex Service Station at Singleton in the NSW Hunter Valley region, Clifford Constructions hired a high powered rota-clean from Kennards Hire.

The day has become such a popular event on the industry social calendar that it was sold out. Some tees even had more than one group of players.

At 8:00am on a bright and sunny morning, more than 100 golf enthusiasts took to the course in an Ambrose style to drive, slice, hook, chip out of bunkers and putt their way around 18 holes.

To make their journey a little easier, Kennards Hire had a number of staff members driving around in golf carts distributing drinks to players. An electronic Traffic Board was set up to direct players to the ‘Kennards Cafe’, which provided tea, coffee and refreshments.

Kennards Hire also erected a couple of their new marquees complete with a BBQ that cooked up a hearty breakfast of sausages and

eggs served on fresh bread and complemented with cold drinks and beer.

While the day is primarily a social day, it provides players from small, medium and large companies across a broad range of industries with an opportunity to network with suppliers and talk about new or upcoming projects. It also enables attendees to discuss new equipment and products available from Kennards Hire, all in a relaxed setting.

Once the scorecards were tallied, players enjoyed a well-earned sit-down dinner where trophies and prizes were handed out for first, second and third place as well as closest to the pin, longest drive and straightest drive.

The successful, well-attended event is expected to be even bigger next year.

On Friday 10 October 2014, the Australian Asphalt Pavement Association (AAPA) industry golf day was held in South Australia and once again Kennards Hire were proud to be the major sponsor.

“Kennards Hire had a number of staff members driving around in golf carts distributing drinks to players.”

Macquarie Arms Hotel in historic Windsor will be celebrating its 200th birthday in July.

Steeped in history, one story tells how the upper floor was occupied by the 73rd Regiment Red Coat Soldiers, while convicts who built the Hotel by hand were chained up in the cellar.

The convicts found a way to entertain themselves by smuggling barrels of illegal rum from the Hawkesbury River into the quarters below through the “Rum Smugglers Tunnels”. In their pursuit of the liquid gold, two convict brothers, Richard and Fitzpatrick,

The Tailgate Experience has a storage warehouse at Botany. “With the LED Video Board being trailer mounted it’s a simple matter of driving past the nearby Kennards Hire branch and picking it up in the morning and dropping it off the following day, which is very convenient and cost-effective,” said Patrick.

“The full colour LED Video Boards from Kennards Hire work so well, that for this season we intend to incorporate several at various points within our large area,” Patrick added.

The Remembrance Day National Ceremony at the Australian War Memorial on 11 November 2014 marked the 97th anniversary of the Armistice, which ended the First World War (1914–18).To provide power to an operations site shed for the War Memorial Event Co-ordinator to control proceedings, media companies covering the ceremony as well as sound equipment for dignitary speeches, Kennards Hire supplied a 60kva and 100kva skid mounted generators.

The generators, which were placed under a heritage listed tree, feature 3-phase outlets; 20A, 32 and 63A, standard isolated bus bar chamber and 240v and 415v outlets. To prevent causing any damage

REMEMBERING AUSTRALIA’S HEROESto the manicured lawns and gardens of the War Memorial, the generators were placed on protective ground mats, as were 12 portable toilets for the large number of attendees.

Kennards Hire also supplied a 19’ electric scissor lift, which was used by an ABC camera crew for the television broadcast of the ceremony. The scissor lift has a narrow width to allow access through a standard doorway plus a 915mm extending deck for extra reach.

The Remembrance Day National Ceremony included a formal wreath-laying and was attended by high-level dignitaries, diplomats and students from each state and territory of Australia. Australia’s Federation Guard and the Band of the Royal Military College was also on parade.

As part of an upgrade, which will see six kilometres of new track within the rail corridor between Epping and Thornleigh, Sydney based company Nass Excavations was engaged to demolish the top concrete section of the Epping station platform. This was removed to make way for a new, wider, pre-cast platform and eliminate the gap between the platform and commuter train carriages.

Fergal Talty, Project Manager, NASS Excavations (Aust.) Pty Ltd, explained that when working on a rail site, equipment must be non-conductive.

“Kennards Hire supplied four sections of fibreglass scaffolding, which was used as a protective handrail while working on the 50 metre long platform,” said Fergal.

“To minimise the dispersion of dust during the demolition, Kennards Hire also supplied a water cart and compressor.”

Fiberglass scaffolding from Kennards Hire is mobile and light enabling easy handling, manoeuvrability and transportation. It is ideally suited to trades working above ground on rail or electrical job sites where a stable, non-conductive platform is a specified requirement.

NASS Excavations was founded in 1990 and specialises in detailed demolition and excavation works within the commercial and civil construction industry across the Sydney metropolitan region. NASS also provides concrete coring and sawing services.

“Working with Kennards Hire adds to convenience,” said Fergal. “We have a number of projects at various locations throughout Sydney at any one time.

“Because Kennards Hire have branches across the city, we can order equipment and schedule our preferred delivery time and location with a simple phone call. And we know everything turns up where and when it’s needed.”

In November 2014, all eyes were on Brisbane as it hosted the world’s leaders for the Group of Twenty (G20) Summit. To advise locals and visitors of road closures and restricted access areas for pedestrians, Kennards Hire provided a number of trailer mounted message boards. These were placed in and around the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre (BCEC) South Bank in the CBD, where the summit was being held.

A portable, self-energised variable electronic messaging system, these boards are ideally suited to advertising, road signage, traffic management, emergency services messages and at sporting events.

BRISBANE ON THE WORLD STAGE

Kennards Hire Orange supplied contracted construction company Momentum Built with a wide range of equipment for the upgrade. This included site sheds, containers, toilets and several hundred meters of temporary fencing as well as a range of sundry tools. Large all terrain boom lifts, scissor lifts and a large generator to power mechanical plant were also supplied by Kennards Hire.

“The scope of works included the demolition of the existing Orange Airport Terminal, associated services, fencing and car park structures plus excavation of the footings to support the new structural members,” Warren Stephens, Director of Momentum Built explained.

Kennards Hire equipment lands at new Orange Airport

“Having a Kennards Hire branch located in Orange with a broad range of equipment readily available significantly added to convenience and efficiency,” he said.

The main construction phase saw the installation of new in-ground hydraulic and electrical services. Once completed, the main structure was erected, which included structural steel, metal roof and wall cladding and internal fit out of the service areas.

The Orange Airport Terminal building was increased from 600 square metres to a 2000 square metre footprint including designated areas for check-in, arrivals and departures. Additionally,

Located in the Central West region of NSW approximately 250 kilometres from Sydney, Orange is a regional hub that recently upgraded its airport to handle larger aircraft and the expected future growth of the area.

KENNARDS HIRE RAIL

At six re-railing sites along the Cootamundra provisional centre rail corridor between Wagga Wagga and Moss Vale, Kennards Hire Rail supplied 18 of their new Rosenqvist CD 200 with an e-Clip head clipping machines.

The Rosenquist CD200 is a walk-behind clipping machine with a sleeper lifting capacity of 50mm. It is a user friendly product that requires just a single operative and makes switching sides or working direction simple and is easy. Weighing approximately 215kg the unit has mounted handles and can be lifted by four men as well as a single lifting point on top for a mechanical lift. It also features dual rail seats and an interchangeable work head, enabling other tools to be fitted.

“Having the ability to hire rail equipment as needed is great for our business,” said Peter Vesperman, Project Manager South, ARTC. “It adds to convenience and cost-effectiveness if our own equipment is being utilised on another project site.

“With Kennards Hire having a national branch network, it allows us to have equipment delivered no matter the location. It also means we don’t have to purchase equipment we may only use a few times during the year,” he added.

While much of the country relaxed over the December-January holiday period, there was no slowing down for the Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) as it completed major maintenance improvement works.

KEEPING MAINTENANCE WORKS ON TRACK

Matt Martin from Kennards Hire Rail visited the various sites providing training and advice on the new clipping machine to the maintenance crews for the duration of the works.

“Having Matt on site was a great benefit. He provided excellent service and was very responsive to our needs,” said Peter.

The Australian Rail Track Corporation Ltd. (ARTC) plays a critical role in the transport supply chain. The ARTC network is used to move a range of commodities including general freight, coal, iron ore, other bulk minerals and agricultural products throughout Australia. Its network is also important in providing access for interstate and inter-city passenger services.

In addition to the new Rosenqvist CD 200 clipping machines, Kennards Hire Rail also supplied eight weld trucks and a number of rail maintenance equipment. This included mp12 rail grinders, rail borers, petrol impact wrenches, trolleys and a range of rail welding equipment and sundry hand tools.

an undercover baggage handling area and improved café and toilet facilities plus car rental service desks were also incorporated into the new modern terminal.

Momentum Built is a mid-sized construction company with a diverse portfolio of projects in various sectors of the building industry. The company specialises in commercial construction and refurbishment projects for various local government agencies across NSW. Momentum Built is also involved in commercial fitout and delivers a diverse range of projects for Sydney Trains. The remaining portion of their works portfolio comes from new construction and refurbishment across residential, retail, hospitality and health services projects.

Since completing the Orange Airport project, Momentum Built has hired additional equipment from Kennards Hire for projects throughout Sydney and NSW.

“A benefit of dealing with Kennards Hire is they have multiple locations throughout the city. If a site needs a piece of equipment for an hour or a day, there’s often a Kennards Hire branch nearby,” Warren added.

The variation in aggregate exposure offers polished concrete floors a unique appearance so that no two are the same, while the level of shine can extend from a low gloss to a reflective mirror-like finish.

The process of polishing concrete floors has some very specific steps and requires specialist equipment, which is available from Kennards Hire Concrete Care. Just as there’s a difference in the final look of a polished concrete floor, there is also a difference in polishing techniques.

Polishing is a multistep process and depending on the desired look, it can be a full – or true – polish (no topical coating) or completed with a coating. A penetrating sealer is used in this process.

The most critical stage to achieving the preferred floor finish is preparation. This involves thoroughly removing any existing floorcovering or coating. Machines used for this initial step include scrapers, shot blasters or grinders, which are all available from Kennards Hire Concrete Care.

Polishing uses specialised heavy-duty planetary machines equipped with diamond-impregnated disks that gradually grind down surfaces to the desired degree of shine and smoothness.

Polishing a floor where a topical coating, such as an epoxy, will be applied to achieve the gloss finish is a faster and less expensive option. Initially 30/40 grit is used to achieve the desired exposed aggregate appearance, then a 60/80 grit is used to remove the scratches from the

first grind followed by a 120 grit. This creates a smooth surface and ensures the topical coating will bond to the floor.

When attempting a full polish, the required walk behind grinder must be a true planetary machine. Planetary machines from Kennards Hire Concrete Care smooth the floor and attain higher gloss levels due to their grinding action. These machines usually feature variable speed and come with adjustable grinding weights.

A full grind involves polishing the floor numerous times using a finer grade of polishing pad each time. This method is more labour intensive with the final polish being completed with the use of a fine 3000 grit pad. This seals the floor completely and achieves a water and stain resistant finish without the application of any other coatings.

The aesthetic versatility of design options for polished concrete, including colouring with stains and dyes, decorative engraving and stencilled graphics has led to polished concrete’s increase in popularity.

“Polished concrete has been featured in many magazines and TV shows, which has led to a significant increase in enquiries from our customers seeking the right equipment and advice,” said Misha. “The best way to give them advice on their project was by doing a polished concrete countertop ourselves where we face and overcome the same challenges.”

Polished concrete floors have become very popular in homes, cafes, retail spaces and offices as have concrete kitchen bench tops and outdoor barbeque and dining areas. The addition of iron oxide colour pigments to the cement mix and different size aggregate offers a unique finish and earthy tones. These oxide colours can give a granite or reconstituted stone appearance with the added feature of selecting your own stone size.

Misha and the team at Kennards Hire Concrete Care created their concrete countertop by making the exact size template from timber and plywood in the rear storage area in the branch. This enabled them to freely work on the project without the restrictions of what is commonly known as ‘cast in place’. The ‘cast in place’ system is widely used in prestigious homes around the U.S, which means all work is performed in situ, from template construction through to mechanical grinding and polishing.. It is the first of more to come, which will be used at other Kennards Hire branches.

Once the concrete had cured after 4-5 days, the most crucial stage began, grinding and honing

the surface to achieve the desired high gloss finish. It is at the first grinding stage where the desired level of stone or aggregate exposure is achieved, simply ground to leave a plain finish without exposure. Misha used a variable speed, three-head planetary benchtop grinder to ensure a professional, smooth finish on the top and a hand-held grinder for the edges.

“To get the look we wanted we added some colour pigment and stones from a landscaping supplier and coloured glass to the cement mix,” Misha explained.

“The process involves a number of stages of diamond grinding. The first is referred to as metal bond grinding and uses a coarse 30/40 grit disc to expose the aggregate. This is followed by grinding with several finer discs to remove the scratches. Application of a grout at this stage helps eliminate any pinholes that are exposed from the grinding. The concrete is then treated with a densifier which helps harden the concrete allowing us to polish the concrete through several grades up to a 3000 grit pad in order to achieve the high gloss.

“Equipment specialists from Kennards Hire Concrete Care can provide expert advice on polishing techniques...”

The growing trend toward polished concrete prompted Misha Carnell, Branch Manager at Kennards Hire Concrete Care, Keswick South Australia, to replace the laminate countertop in the branch with a concrete one.

Practicality, durability and low maintenance is also what makes polished and coated concrete so popular and why people are opting for this style of flooring as an alternative to marble, granite, ceramic tiles, laminate, wood, linoleum or vinyl.

Equipment specialists from Kennards Hire Concrete Care can provide expert advice on polishing techniques, demonstrate how to use a machine as well as advise on which machine is ideally suited to your project.

All the equipment from Kennards Hire Concrete Care is well serviced and easy to operate. Each machine also has tailored safety buckets containing the required PPE for that machine.

With its range of textures and natural rustic appeal, polished concrete has become one of the most highly sought-after of all floor finishes in recent years for home interiors and outdoor dining areas, cafes, showrooms, retail spaces and offices.

WORKING UNDERCOVER: NEW CONCRETE COVER METER

This can be hazardous to personnel, break expensive equipment and lead to serious structural damage as floors can partially collapse in multi-story buildings resulting in extensive and costly repairs.

The new Elcometer Concrete Cover Meter, now available from Kennards Hire Test & Measure has simplified identifying the location, orientation and depth measurement of reinforcing bars and sub-surface metalwork. It accurately measures

Locating steel reinforcement bars and metal pipes is essential in the construction and maintenance of structures. When working on structural objects one thing customers are commonly trying to avoid is steel tension rod. If you misjudge and drill through steel tension rod you will hear an enormous bang and see the concrete structure fracture as the rod snaps.

the depth of cover over reinforcement bars and is also used to establish the condition of the metalwork and assess the corrosion potential, so maintenance can be scheduled as required.

Highly accurate at +/- 2 per cent, the Elcometer Concrete Cover Meter is ideal for Construction, Drilling Contractors, Civil Engineering, Commercial and Residential Plumbing and Electrical Contractors, Air Conditioning Installation Contractors and Remedial Works Companies.

“It’s the only gauge on today’s market that measures the thickness of concrete cover of both stainless steel rebar and metal pipes,” explained Leo De Sousa, Branch Manager of Kennards Hire Test & Measure East Brisbane.

“When the search head is approaching a reinforcing bar, the Cover Meter emits a sound that increases in pitch as it moves closer to the bar,” he said, adding, “A signal strength indicator on the display simultaneously increases in length.”

“When the search head is aligned directly over reinforcing the sound pitch is at its highest, the indicator is at maximum and the depth of cover is at its minimum.”

Reporting the depth of the concrete, the location and orientation of the rebar or metal pipe, the Cover Meter can even determine the diameter of the rebar from 5 – 50mm up to 120mm deep in concrete.

The handheld Cover Meter has been ergonomically designed with a curve to fit snugly against the hip. Featuring an easy-to-use menu-driven graphical interface, it guides the user during setup and measurement.

Most functions can be accessed and controlled via 4 simple keys, enabling single handed operation. The reading of cover is continuously updated on the backlit display in large digits, which also allows for easy viewing in dark environments. This enables the user to note the depth of cover reading and move on to the next bar.

In addition to the new Concrete Cover Meter, Kennards Hire Test & Measure has an expansive range of equipment. This includes hydrostatic test pumps, anchor testers, non-invasive smoke machines and GPS locators used for surveying to an extensive array of hand-held devices.

SEAL OF APPROVALTHE NEW VACUUM TEST KIT

Leo De Sousa, Branch Manager of Kennards Hire Test & Measure East Brisbane explained that, “The new vacuum test kit has been designed to test the integrity of manholes and their resistance to water infiltration or exfiltration.”

“The test is performed by creating a vacuum in the manhole. The operator monitors a gauge for vacuum loss to identify problems within minutes. The head assemblies are made of lightweight aluminium, which makes them the lightest units available.”

Previously, sewer pipes were tested using water through either infiltration or exfiltration.

Groundwater entering the pipe is monitored through the use of a weir, while for the exfiltration test, water is introduced into the pipeline and the level monitored over a specified period, usually 24 hours.

The infiltration method of testing can be problematic. A faulty section of pipe could pass due to no groundwater being present and it’s difficult to use metering equipment to measure water flow. For exfiltration tests,

problems can occur if ground water is present, water will not escape from the pipe, leading to inaccurate results.

These methods of testing are expensive and time consuming. And if a leak is identified, there’s no method of determining its exact location. “The vacuum test kit from Kennards Hire Test & Measure enables you to test manholes and identify a leak immediately before or after ring installation and backfilling,” said Leo. “It also eliminates the need for water tests.”

The vacuum pump draws 10” hg in approximately 2 minutes for a 15’ deep manhole at a rate of 15 CFM. It features an oil-free graphite vane pump, which has eliminated the need for a cumbersome lubrication system and has aluminium rather than glass filter jars.

The head assembly is supported by a durable, aluminium brace. An aluminium pushpin rod connection allows for easy depth adjustment. The plate style tester seals the surface of the manhole frame or cone. It has a 1” neoprene gasket to ensure a leak-free seal.

The new vacuum test kit now available from Kennards Hire Test & Measure offers the most efficient, accurate and cost-effective solution for testing new, existing and rehabilitated manholes.

The vacuum test kit is ideal for Construction, Civil Engineering, Remedial Works, Plumbing Contractors, Council, Utilities and Waste Management companies.

KENNARDS HIRE LIFT & SHIFT

To transport the soil from the planter box to a tipper truck, Kennards Hire Lift & Shift provided a number of conveyor belts. Adding to the complexity of the project, the conveyor belts had to be assembled to go over a crystal clear swimming pool.

“We hired just about every conveyor belt Kennards Hire Lift & Shift had in Queensland,” said Daniel Oaten, Senior Arborist with Treescape Australia. “In total it was about 120 metres from the planter box to the truck.

“The conveyors went over a sea wall, over the pool, under a walkway, alongside another sea wall then into the truck, so it wasn’t just a straight set-up. They’re simple to operate and light enough for two men to easily reposition as needed,” he added.

Established in New Zealand over 30 years ago and now with offices in Brisbane and Sydney, Treescape Australasia specialise in the cost-

When you’re poolside at one of the most luxurious resorts on the Gold Coast, you would expect a sunlounge, umbrella and cool drink in hand. Unfortunately for the team from Treescape Australia, it was shovels and the monumental task of removing, then replacing, 190 tonne of soil and replanting palm trees in an expansive landscaped planter box, which required re-waterproofing.

effective maintenance of trees and vegetation, tree pruning, tree removals, land clearing, power line clearing and tree transplanting. The company provides its services to councils, utilities, government agencies, construction companies, developers, corporations and private residents.

Daniel was very pleased with the service and assistance he received, saying, “Dave Fellows Branch Manager of Kennards Hire Lift & Shift’s Brisbane Business provided outstanding service on this project. Anything we needed he was able to help us out, if we had any problems someone was on site quickly to keep the project moving.”

In addition to the conveyor belts, Kennards Hire also supplied the scaffolding to hold the conveyors over the pool and keep them steady.

“We use a lot of products from Kennards Hire and Kennards Hire Lift & Shift on various projects. We know the equipment is well

serviced and reliable,” said Daniel. “This adds to project efficiency and cost-effectiveness.”

Kennards Hire Lift & Shift has a range of portable conveyors, which include 3.0 and 6.0 metre units. The units are compact and can be assembled in as little as 15 minutes without specialised equipment or tools.

To install the large glass panels at the newly constructed Predator Precinct at Melbourne Zoo, Kennards Hire Lift & Shift hired their new 1000kg 12v glass lifter to installation contractor Tech Glass Installations (Vic).

The old exhibit, which had been part of the zoo since 1967 has been demolished and replaced with a state-of-the-art enclosure.

Lion Gorge, which forms part of the new Predator Precinct, will bring visitors face-to-face with some of the world’s most ferocious and territorial creatures including Lions, African Wild Dogs and the critically endangered Philippine Crocodile. It will provide visitors with a unique experience and take them on a journey of discovery of how these majestic and awe inspiring animals behave and survive in the wild.

Shane Mullen, Site Manager and owner of Tech

Glass Installations (Vic) explained that the glass panels for the enclosure were 2.7 metres high and 3.8 metres wide and varied in thickness from 31mm to 42mm and weighed up to 750 kilograms.

“Each panel was placed on an incline and took up to one and a half hours to install into its precise location. It was held in place manually and by the crane while the supportive steel plates were mechanically fixed. Then the adjacent panel was installed.”

The panels were made from Grade-A safety glass by leading manufacturer and supplier Viridian glass.

“It’s been a comprehensive process requiring extensive planning, which involved precise measurements to ensure the panels would fit perfectly, organisation to ensure site access and safety and co-ordination with the glass supplier, zoo staff and having the right equipment readily available,” said Shane.

“This is where working in conjunction with Kennards Hire Lift & Shift was invaluable. After an initial call to discuss the needs of the project Kennards Hire Lift & Shift advised they had a machine that could lift glass over 700kgs. The staff at the Richmond branch arranged a demonstration of its capabilities and operational controls.

“It was the perfect machine for the project and was delivered and ready to go as soon as we needed it,” Shane added.

Shane established Tech Glass Installations (Vic) and has been specialising in the installation of large,

18 19

heavyweight glass products for over 15 years. Projects include commercial office buildings and retail complexes, hospitality venues, schools and architecturally designed houses with glass feature walls.

“We use a lot of cranes across a range of project sites,” he said, “We’ve used electric chain blocks from Kennards Hire Lift & Shift before but this is the first time using one of their glass lifters.

“When doing projects with heavy pieces of glass it’s a real bonus for our business knowing this machine is now available.”

Kennards Hire Lift & Shift have the largest fleet of glass lifters in the hire industry. With a lifting capacity of up to 1000kg, this newest addition to the fleet features industry leading twin vacuum and battery system, providing additional safety during the lift process.

To relocate a 15 tonne thermo-forming food packaging machine without damaging a newly coated floor, Kennards Hire Lift & Shift hired two sets of air skates to factory relocation company KMB Group.Air skates enable heavy loads to be moved on a cushion of air across a smooth surface. The regulators allow heavy objects to be lifted in a very controlled manner, which cannot be achieved with the same precision when jacking with mechanical skates.

“Normally to move a machine of this size it would need to be separated into several sections,” explained Darren Brown, Managing Director of KMB Group (Australia) Pty Ltd.

“This involves electrical disconnection, moving the machine by either forklift or mechanical

skates then reassembly. This can result in machine downtime of up to six days.

“Utilising the Air Skates from Kennards Hire Lift & Shift negated this and production was able to resume at full capacity again within 24 hours. This both surprised and pleased our customer as it significantly reduced labour costs as well as loss of production,” Darren said.

Established as a machinery importer for the manufacturing sector in 1973, KMB Group (Australia) Pty Ltd has diversified into several key specialist areas. This includes textile and plastic processing machinery and engineering services focussing on complete turnkey machinery relocation for manufacturing production lines across Australia, Asia Pacific and North America.

After the successful application of the Air Skates from Kennards Hire Lift & Shift, Darren says they have definite value for future projects, especially

when moving large machinery where there isn’t the head height for a crane.

“We had never heard of or seen Air Skates before,” Darren said, “We contacted Kennards Hire Lift & Shift in Richmond and the staff were very helpful and provided great service.

“The biggest advantage of the Air Skates is the ease of multi-directional movement. Where the floor was smooth you could move the machine single-handedly,” he said, “in areas where the surface was a bit rough it took a few men to place it precisely into position.

“Now we’re familiar with how the Air Skates operate and how well they work we can offer customers more efficient service and help get their production online in a much shorter timeframe. We’ll definitely go back to Kennards Hire Lift & Shift,” Darren added.

“...working in conjunction with Kennards Hire Lift & Shift was invaluable.”
