COVID-19 OUTBREAK IN KENYA

DAILY SITUATION REPORT - 117

1.0 KEY HIGHLIGHTS

1. Three hundred and seventy-nine (379) new confirmed COVID-19 cases were reported in

the last 24 hours bringing the total number of confirmed cases in Kenya to 10,105 cases as

of 12 July 2020. Counties reporting new cases are Nairobi (209), Kiambu (49), Busia (38),

Migori (19), Mombasa (16), Kajiado (12), Uasin Gishu (8), Lamu (6), Machakos (5),

Nakuru (5), Kisumu (2), Narok (2), Wajir (2), Garissa (1), Isiolo (1), Kericho (1), Nyamira

(1), Nyeri (1) and Trans Nzoia (1).

2. The total number of deaths reported since the beginning of the outbreak is 185, case fatality

rate (CFR) is 1.8 percent.

3. In the last 24 hours, forty-nine (49) COVID-19 patients recovered and were discharged

bringing the total number of recoveries and discharges for COVID-19 to 2,881.

4. As of today, forty-two (42) out of 47 counties have reported cases namely: Nairobi (5558),

Mombasa (1737), Busia (550), Kiambu (500), Kajiado (458), Machakos (258), Migori (190),

Uasin Gishu (145), Nakuru (136), Kilifi (70), Kwale (54), Makueni (45), Taita Taveta (41),

Kisumu (37), Garissa (34), Siaya (31), Narok (30), Turkana (20), Wajir (19), Kitui (18),

Mandera (18), Meru (18), Murang'a (17), Lamu (15), Kericho (13), Isiolo (12), Nyeri (11),

Vihiga (9), Bungoma (8), Kakamega (7), Nandi (7), Homa Bay (6), Kisii (6), Laikipia (6), Trans

Nzoia (5), Marsabit (4), Nyamira (4), Embu (2), Kirinyaga (2), Nyandarua (2), Bomet (1), and

Elgeyo Marakwet (1).

5. Mombasa and Nairobi City Counties have the highest attack rates of COVID-19 at 143.8

and 126.4 per 100,000 population respectively when compared to 21.2 per 100,000 for the

whole country and need enhanced interventions. In addition, the COVID-19 outbreak has so

far spread to 89 percent of the counties in the country. Risk communication, laboratory

testing, and contact tracing have been identified as key challenges.

6. Of the affected counties, only Turkana, Kajiado, Marsabit (discharged all contacts),

Garissa, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Kisii, Nairobi, Siaya, Busia, Uasin Gishu and Garissa

submitted contact tracing reports.

7. Eight thousand nine hundred and twenty (88 percent) of the 10105 confirmed cases are

local transmissions.

8. Of the 3413 contacts under follow-up 3334 (98 percent) were followed up today

COVID-19 SITUATION UPDATE: 12 July 2020

Since 13 March 2020 when the first case was confirmed in Kenya, a total of 10,105 confirmed cases and 185 have died giving a case fatality rate

of 1.8 percent have been line listed. Of these, 8920 cases (88 percent) were local transmissions and 1185 (12 percent) are imported cases. The

Figure 1 below shows trends of cases. Mandatory quarantine was instituted on 25 March 2020 with testing of all quarantined people starting on

29 March 2020. Figure 2 shows cumulative caseload. Figure 3 shows number of samples tested by date indicating the positive and negative

results. Laboratory test rate currently stands at 4343 samples per 1,000,000 people.

1.4 Distribution of Confirmed COVID-19 Cases by Presentation and

Presentation of Symptoms among Symptomatic cases

Of the 10105 confirmed cases, 1061 (11 percent) presented with symptoms (Figure 4). Cough

(56 percent) and fever (43 percent) were predominant presenting symptoms.

1.5 Age and Sex Distribution of COVID Confirmed Cases and

Deaths

Six thousand eight hundred and forty-six (68 percent) are males and 3259 (32 percent) are

females. Most of the cases; 3258 (32 percent), are in the age group of 30-39 years. Figure 5

below shows age and sex distribution of COVID-19 cases. One hundred and eighty – five

deaths have been reported so far, 141 (76 percent) being males and 44 (24 percent) were

females (Figure 6).

1.6 Distribution of Confirmed COVID-19 Cases by County and

Transmission Classification

Of the 10105 cases, 5558 (55 percent) are from Nairobi County followed by Mombasa County

with 1737 (17 percent) as shown in Figure 7. Mombasa County has the highest attack rate of

143.8 per 100,000 population followed by Nairobi City County at 126.4 per 100,000 population

(Table 1).

1.8 Status of Contract Tracing as at Today

Of the 10105 confirmed COVID-19 cases a total of 12396 contacts have been listed, 457 contacts have tested positive for COVID-19 (Table 2).

7226 of the 10105 cases are pending contact listing, the counties with highest pending contact listing are: Nairobi (3877), Mombasa (1239)

among others (Fig 10). Of the 3413 contacts under follow up 3334 (98 percent) were followed up today

2.0 KEY ACTIONS

2.1 Coordination

➢ Ongoing coordination meetings across both national and sub – national levels.

2.2 Case Management and Infection Prevention & Control

➢ In the last 24 hours, 49 COVID-19 patients recovered and were discharged bringing the

total number of recoveries and discharges for COVID-19 to 2881.

2.3 Surveillance, Laboratory and Points of Entry

➢ All alerts were responded to and contact tracing continued in all affected counties.

➢ In the last 24 hours, 6979 samples were tested across various laboratories of which 379

samples turned positive for COVID-19. A total of 206,584 cumulative tests have so far

been conducted.

3.0 KEY CHALLENGES ➢ Emerging reports of personal protective equipment (PPE) of poor quality being distributed

to healthcare workers and facilities. The health workers are requesting for standardization

of the materials and compliance with sizes of the PPEs.

➢ Suboptimal utilization of the digitized COVID-19 case investigation form.

➢ Suboptimal contact tracing and delay from counties in submitting reports to PHEOC

➢ The long turnaround time for relying laboratory results to clients in most counties is causing

delay in public health action.

➢ Increasing complacency by community despite established community transmission.

Some people still want to see what COVID-19 patient looks like. They think it is a myth

and this is contributing to some laxity in observing some prevention and control measures

such as hand washing.

➢ Limited resources/logistical support for field teams including vehicles to conduct

community visits, contact tracing and case follow up at the sub-national level.


4.0 NEXT STEPS

➢ Address concern of poor quality of PPEs being distributed to the sub – national level.

➢ Strengthen utilization of the integrated data management system moving forward by

incentivizing its use.

➢ Ensure capacity building of the sub – county teams from the remaining 20 counties on

rapid response, contact tracing and use of the data management systems. An additional

➢ Strengthen COVID-19 diagnostic quality assurance systems.
