711 9th AVE W Virginia, MN REGISTRATION: Pre-registration is required. Deadline to register is Monday August 19th https://goo.gl/forms/6T7oZDnTCPacR0SL2 The personal benefits of volunteering Dear 4-H families and volunteers,

In 4-H, youth collaborate with caring adults to explore topics like science, health, agriculture, civic engagement and the arts. Last year, 11,000 volunteers helped to provide a positive environment where 69,000 youth could learn by doing.

Our team at the Extension Center for Youth Development was curious about the impact of being a 4-H volunteer. My colleague Sam Grant, along with other 4-H youth development professionals, set out to answer this question. Over 200 of you responded to our research survey. Here’s what you told us. Adults benefit from 4-H involvement Volunteers come to 4-H hoping to support youth and make a difference. In the process, you gain skills in teaching, leadership and communication. These skills transfer to other environments in which you work and live. According to our study, 92% of you build new relationships with youth within the scope of your volunteer role. That is so important because research shows a clear connection between a young person’s relationships with caring adults and their capacity to thrive. I love how one volunteer from Norman County described the outcome of such intergenerational connections: “Youth and adults work together toward common goals. We focus on strengths instead of weaknesses and strive to break down social barriers so that all feel welcome.” Gaining skills and confidence to lead I was glad to see that 86% of you can identify tangible skills that you’ve built within your 4-H volunteer roles. And what a pleasure to know that those skills are proving useful in other areas of your lives. A 4-H volunteer from Beltrami County commented that “volunteering in 4-H gave me the confidence to apply for a management position at work and the experience to thrive once I got it.” Another volunteer, from Goodhue County, reflected on the growth he’s seen in his ability

Page 8: MINNESOTA 4 -H CLOVER UPDATE - Extension · Dairy Cattle and Dairy Goats- white shirts with white jeans/pants and leather boots/ closed-toed shoes. If white pants cannot be found,

to speak publically and lead with poise. “It was hard to speak in front of a group,” he recalled. “I would talk fast and veer from the main point. After volunteering with 4-H, I have relaxed and become a better leader.” What wonderful benefits there are to being a 4-H volunteer. We join for the sake of young people, and as we walk alongside them, we ourselves grow and change. We wouldn’t be 4-H without you I am proud of all the ways that youth in 4-H are supported throughout their learning. This support is provided by caring adults every step of the way. It’s provided by you. I’m so pleased to know that you are personally benefiting from being in 4-H. Thank you for building new relationships, gaining skills as you go and sharing your passion with Minnesota young people. You are making a difference. I cannot imagine what we would be without you. With gratitude, Jennifer A. Skuza Minnesota 4-H state director P.S. You can view our full volunteer report on our website. If you haven’t already, consider joining our volunteer team! Register for 2019 State Arts-In! Minnesota 4-H State Arts-In is a 22-day intensive arts experience. Youth prepare a musical to perform 3-4 times daily during the Minnesota State Fair. Each year, State Arts-In youth perform at least 35 shows to more than 12,000 audience members in the 4-H building on the Minnesota State Fairgrounds. State Arts-In is about:

• Performing arts including singing, dancing, acting, instrumental accompaniment, costume design, set construction and technical work.

• Leadership, goal-setting and teamwork.

Participants continue to work on goals by putting on several daily performances, serving in leadership roles and acting as 4-H representatives to building visitors. Learn more and register. Keep youth safe – have emergency plans in place Planning in advance to be prepared for a variety of 4-H activities is an important key to keeping all participants safe. Utilize the “keeping youth safe” website for resources and information, and make sure to develop and have in place an emergency plan for all 4-H programs, activities and outings. An emergency can occur at any time. The importance of creating a plan for emergencies can help individuals recognize a problem, take action and minimize or eliminate the danger. Best practice is to develop and have in place an emergency plan for all 4-H programs, activities and outings. Use the following resources from the keeping youth safe site to help you plan ahead and be ready to respond to emergencies: • The risk management planning tool will help

to develop the plan.

• Emergency planning and procedures highlights what to include when planning for emergencies.

• The information sheets titled “responding to emergencies” provide information on a range of topics such as allergic reactions, lost or missing people, bee stings, tick bites and toxic plants, fire and severe weather.

Preparing in advance for emergencies can help everyone stay calm, understand what actions to take and keep everyone safe. Work with your 4-H program coordinator if you have questions on preparing emergency plans or if you need help accessing the resources. Plan now for a safe and fun summer of activities and events! Follow the medication policy and procedures The 4-H medication policy and the procedures are designed to help keep all youth safe by ensuring that medications are administered appropriately. The policy and procedures must be followed at all 4-H programs, including local, regional and state events and activities (including state fair) when they occur overnight or during the day when a parent/guardian is not present. This policy pertains to the use of ALL prescriptions medications. To help you and your family understand the policy and follow the procedures you will need to utilize the following resources: • The information sheet for

parents/guardians titled medication administration policy and procedures for Minnesota 4-H programs (includes events, activities and gatherings).

• The authorization for giving medication form must be completed by the parent/guardian for all prescription

Page 10: MINNESOTA 4 -H CLOVER UPDATE - Extension · Dairy Cattle and Dairy Goats- white shirts with white jeans/pants and leather boots/ closed-toed shoes. If white pants cannot be found,

medications needed during a 4-H activity/event.

Contact the program coordinator in your county if you have questions about the medication policy, procedures and authorization form. Utilize Cloverbud policies and practices when planning programs The 4-H Cloverbud program supports the positive development of children as they explore their world, discover possibilities and practice basic social skills. The 4-H Cloverbud information sheet for parents, guardians and mentors provides program options, safety considerations, policies and rules.

This resource will aid you in:

Planning age appropriate types of programming.

Understanding cooperative versus competitive programming.

Understanding the rules for Cloverbud participation across all types of programs.

Ensuring safety measures are in place to keep all Cloverbuds safe when participating in programs and activities.

Utilizing this resource will help you plan and deliver programs for Cloverbuds that are safe and age appropriate for all K-2nd grade 4-H participants.

Take advantage of this great 4-H video-making opportunity! The state 4-H video committee is planning a 4-H video workshop where you will receive training from Film North, a company which offers equipment and logistical support for filmmakers and videographers through classes and teen summer camps.

In this 4-day workshop you will:

• Learn from professionals in the field of videography and filmmaking.

• Learn the elements of making a video and what needs to be considered when planning.

• Learn about equipment needs and use (cameras, tripods, mics, etc.)

• Edit your raw footage using computer software.

Instructors and committee members will mentor you and provide you with feedback. Your completed video will be shown to the workshop group and in the 4-H photography display area at the Minnesota State Fair. This workshop will provide you with skills that you can share with 4-H members back in your county. Workshop details Who: 4-H members grade 6 and up – limited to 20 participants. When and where: Aug. 22-25 at the University of Minnesota and the Minnesota State Fair during livestock weekend to allow for combining rides with your county delegation. Registration and cost details will be announced next month -- stay tuned! Accompaniment, costume design, set

construction and technical work. Leadership, goal-setting and teamwork.

Participants continue to work on goals by putting on several daily performances, serving in leadership roles and acting as 4-H representatives to building visitors. Learn more and register.
